Blaze
I would still like to know the details of the transaction (cash, FB stock, etc.). $400 million in cash along with about $1.6 billion in stock. i7 7700K | 32GB RAM | GTX 1080Ti | Rift CV1 | TM Warthog | Win 10 "There will always be people with a false sense of entitlement. Altflieger
Mark Zuckerberg buys Oculus Rift Noooooo! Well decidedly uncool now, lol! Zuckerberg paid $2 Billion for the company. lunaticfringe
Given the way by which Facebook changes its security and advertising settings, hidden, at will, do you *really* want to spend $400+ on a device that may both spontaneously drop ads on you in the middle of an engagement ("goin' in for guns... pull... pull... get him to the pipper... c'mon... GUNSGUNSBUY A FORD FIESTA!"), or will consider every move you make on that screen their intellectual property? No, I will not buy an OR. I don't need Zuckerberg finding new ads to put in my face, putting ads in my face to use his device, or recording my actions. FFC.
lunaticfringe
Actually- you know who I feel sorry for (and I refuse to feel sorry for this person because of his general level of self-importance)? Gabe Newell. He *GAVE* OR the technology, gratis, because of how important he felt it was. And this is how they thank him? Please. The owners of OR should never be considered for employment in the community again. The only one who walks away clean is Carmack.
hansangb
If Palmer wanted to sell it to FB, that's his prerogative. I have no issues with it. That doesn't mean I'm not sad about it. And I canceled my DK2 order just now. I have DK1, and ordered the DK2 to lend a helping hand (every order helps a small company). But clearly, that's no longer the case. Personally speaking, I don't think this is a good idea. I don't believe that devs will get the same love from a smaller/agile company like Oculus. Good , bad or otherwise, they will become absorbed into FB. In the immediate future, devs may shy away to see what happens, while another camp will be excited about gaining access to FB user base. I don't use FB, so I'm talking out of my ass when I say this. But I just don't see why a normal FB user would want the Rift. Some are saying this could be the "next big thing" but it's too immature as a technology for general use. Gamers will put up with a lot just to get the immersion factor. But I just don't see you average FB guy wanting to don the headset to interact with others. Do people really want to "around" the virtual world? Outside of games, I just don't know if your avg consumer will care. hsb HW Spec in Spoiler --- i7-10700K Direct-To-Die/OC'ed to 5.1GHz, MSI Z490 MB, 32GB DDR4 3200MHz, EVGA 2080 Ti FTW3, NVMe+SSD, Win 10 x64 Pro, MFG, Warthog, TM MFDs, Komodo Huey set, Rverbe G1
blksolo
For all we know Gabe gave his blessing on this acquisition, and since Steam will be selling VR games they will benefit as well. Also I think this will force Microsoft and Google into the mix also. I think we have a full blown VR war coming and that can only be good news for us!! Mnemonic
This is a slap in the face of anyone who has ever contributed to a crowd funding project. Why so? If their vision is not just deliver a headset, but rather deliver a Metaverse, then they gonna need plenty of money and "big brother" for support. Besides, Mark Zuckerberg says the short time plans and commitments of Oculus will not change.

This is a slap in the face of anyone who has ever contributed to a crowd funding project. I know what you mean. My first visceral reaction was "ah....crap" But in the end, the company - once it has met the backer obligation - can do what they want to do. What they think is best in the interest of the product *or* the owners. I still think it's not a good thing, but I'm willing to wait and see. I'll hold off on judgment until I see where this is headed (not that it means anything - LOL) hsb HW Spec in Spoiler --- i7-10700K Direct-To-Die/OC'ed to 5.1GHz, MSI Z490 MB, 32GB DDR4 3200MHz, EVGA 2080 Ti FTW3, NVMe+SSD, Win 10 x64 Pro, MFG, Warthog, TM MFDs, Komodo Huey set, Rverbe G1
VincentLaw
Why so? Because now any time I ever see a really cool looking thing on kickstarter, I will also think to myself: "But this might end up being owned by EA, Facebook, or Enron." Grim_Smiles
Seems like this device DOA now according to a lot of comments on FB. Comments on public shared photos from popular FB pages tend to make one question how so many people can even manage to dress themselves in the morning. You'd get a better prediction on it from a tarot card reader than FB commentators. Just saying. I'm pretty much on the fence about this. FB does have plenty of money to toss into this to increase development. However, FB also isn't the best company to be dealing with either (this coming from a guy on FB by the way). I found it hypocritical for Zucker to have written a complaint letter about the NSA when his company is just as much a part of the problem. But I also have to recognize that FB isn't the lone wolf out there either. Google, Microsoft, etc, name a company and they are doing the same things even if they claim otherwise. Somewhere our porn site interests and other such tidbits are in a company database. I'm hoping that this works out and that our concerns are for nothing. They just better not pull that ad crap like Lunatic was mentioning.
