EXactly..

thank you for confirm..

i like to hear the the comments from a rift user as well...

i imagine it awesome :)

I play with headphones most of the time. I have a nice stereo sony headset with built in mic perfect for DCS. It upsamples stereo to 7.1. I haven't really noticed much with DCS. I'll pay attention to this next time and let you know my experience.

Halflife is awesome with my headset. Rise of flight is awesome when you turn your head.

I'll see in DCS. I'm flying a p-51 with a massive engine in front of me. I'd imagine both ears are swampped pretty much no matter how you turn your head.

But if you have a headphones and you play DCS with a monitor and you use track IR or a mouse to look around the sound will be the same stereo i hear so you can get an idea what I'm hearing. THe rift only changes the visuals it has no effect on sound.

well have u tried it with head phones?

i ask this because deadhalls, half life, all have 3d effect sound because the fact that the rift tracks your head movement, the audio from its respective source will sound as if you have a sense of space.

i like to know if u can play DCS with the rift & headphones,,

then "let say" your in the P51 and you look at your right wing, will you ear the engine more pronounced on your left ear, and less on the right, or is the DCS audio strictly mono..

AND IF YOU HAVENT ALREADY, play deadhalls, half life with the RIFT and some headphones, u will know what im talking about then...

With headphones on, and Track IR, if I Move/Rotate my head, the Audio is correctly positioned.

ie, A-10C On ground with Canopy Open, Look Left and Look Right. even with surround sound headphones.

Has nothing to do with Oculus, it has to do with XAudio Engine, which correctly positions audio sources that are correctly positioned as the camera in cockpit or External is moved/rotated.

thanks for reply.. but what does "correctly positions" mean?

like do you get a sense of the engine sounds behind you as you turn your head left and right? or even when firing the gua-8, do u perceive audio wise that the gun is in front of you?

That would rather depend on your hardware. If you've only got stereo headphones, then you're not going to get surround sound. If you're using some virtual surround software (CMSS-3D, Razer Surround) or a virtual/real surround headset or even an amp and 5.1 speakers, then you will.

Messing about with RIFT FOV

Hi all,

I was messing about with RIFT FOV to try and get a handle on FOV and resolution and just how the image is getting into each eye. I captured some screenshots and thought I'd share results in an attached zip file. It has a PDF showing pics and explaining them a bit.

Also has png images in zip.

This should give people a good idea of how scale works in rift.

Oculus and webcam opentracking

I finally fished out my webcam. I printed opentracks pattern and stuck it on the rift and turned on aruco tracking as secondary to the rift.

This is the same setup that Outerra video had with headtracking and rift that was posted here.

It cured drift perfect and allows some minor 6dof freedom in the cockpit. It was pretty cool while facing forward. However if I rotated back over my shoulder which I do most of the time as I'm happily rolling in to strafe ground targets so as I pull up and over in a turn I like to watch the ground targets the entire time. Well I'm facing completely away from the webcam so my view back there hops while using the pattern and it's perfect without. So I'll play more but for now I'm 3DOF. I think it may work better with LED's that stick off the corners of the rift or LEDS on a hat. That way the webcam could see them at any angle. Also my webcam is 61deg fov i have a much wider one in the living room we dont use. I may snag that and see if that helps too.

But it does sort of work and it cures drift and allows 6dof leaning into instruments. Much easier to land and taxi.

obviously.

i my self own a 5.1 logitech audio system, and it works well.

but i like to hear the experience from someone who has the rift.

one person WHO HAS THE RIFT seem to have a 'mono' sound experience where as another responded with a seemingly vague response.

if audio in DCS works well, why havent i heard any raving responses like those who have played half life or dead halls WITH THE RIFT

I have the rift, the rift is simply a tablet/smartphone display strapped to your face with built in tracking, nothing more. The rift has absolutely nothing to do with sound in a game, that is dictated by the game itself, the rift does not add or take away from the sound of any game.If half-life 2 has awesome sound in the rift it's because it has awesome sound even without the rift. Also if you had 100 percent realistic sound in DCS all you would hear is very loud engine noise that sounds muffled because you are wearing ear protection,so I wouldnt worry about accurate sound for DCS.

I think maybe what you are looking for is binaural audio which is awesome!! Try this demo with some good headphones, the closed ear type if possible.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUDTlvagjJA

Make sure you turn the volume up loud and keep your eyes closed during the demo or it will break the immersion.

sound and the Rift Peanut butter and Chocolate??

i give up. you win.

I don't think anyone here is trying to be a pain. What exactly are you looking for?

I've said the same things in my posts that the rift has nothing to do with sound and that the sound you hear moving your mouse with good headphones is the same I'd hear with the rift.

I've tried those games and that doesn't change what we're saying.

What do you disagree with that you keep thinking sound will be special with the rift?

Are you just asking if great stereo/surround sound is better when together with the rift for immersion? If so definately YES. If you take awesome surround sound pump it into awesome headphones that do surround and add a rift for visuals the same sound that was on your monitor is MORE immersive when coupled to the rift. They are like peanut butter and choclate they mix great together. Does that answer your basic question. Now is DCS sound peanut butter to the RIFTs choclate? I don't think so.

It's not a great sound environment yet.

I'll do more experimentation with other aircraft and opening the cockpit. I do remember helo starts being a very good sound enivornment in the RIFT. I'll try the huey start and listent to other traffic while looking around.

In ROF when you use 6DOF and turn your head the wind noise varies. If you move your head outside the windscreen wind noise picks up. And if you turn your head outside of windscreen the it's like sticking your head out a car window it works awesome. I dont' think DCS can do that yet.

I see no settings under sound for Headphones or surround options. I think tey are strickly stereo. Can anyone confirm this? Without knowlege of the positioning of the sound source in 3D stereo upmix to 5.1 or 7.1 is not so great in some games. I'll keep trying.

thanks for the links.

i know rift has nothing to do with audio.

for the most part i can move my mouse left and right on a non-rift setup, and experience the difference in sound awareness.

all i wanted to know are people who do have the rift, what they think about the experience.

i just like to know what do you think of the sound in conjuction with using the rift.

i see that you say that it is awesome visually..

but how about the audio along with it?

as explained by multiple users, audio has nothing to do with the rift.

we already know that the default sounds of dcs are medicore.

im just wondering if u can sense the the engines behind or in front of you as your turn your head left and right. or even the ambient sounds. (looking for a confirmation from a rift user)

so far, it seems like audio experience with the rift is ok, according to others.

not disagreeing with anything, i just like to know what people think about sound when actually using the rift. simple question.

So I've played many games with the rift and all of them using my Logitech G930 headset. The sound can be super awesome like you've stated. I don't feel that way about the sound in DCS so far but I've totally been concentrated on the P-51. I did have some nice sound experiences with the startups and other traffic with my cockpit open.

I don't really feel like I get much feedback from turning my head and the stereo telling me much useful about where sounds are coming from in DCS. Like I said I'll look for that I haven't been concerned with it in DCS.

I do know that as I strafe and drop bombs on targets and pull away I don't get the sense that the sounds are accurately reflecting the position they are coming from. When bombs blow up I don't feel like they come from the distance and angle they are from me. Also as I pass over things shooting at me I hear their cannons firing and I dont' feel much like it's correctly possitioned or taking into account complex things like the speed of sound, and doppler effects. I think it's meant to be pretty simple stereo at the moment. Be nice if someone with DCS audio engine knowlege would comment and tell us what it's capable of.

It's not as compelling as a first person games sounds are for sure.

But there's hope. iRacing's sounds do give me lot's of feedback and position situaltional awareness as does ROF's sound engine. So I think we'll see improvements over time.

thank you for the review.

hey. so wags and the ed team are playing around with the rift.

i can only hope that they will make the future rendition of DCS more immersive via the rift.

so far, the medicore audio, the choppy frames.. so far, im a lil skeptical about how dcs functions with crystal cove..

only if there was a video with crystal cove and EDGE! ;)

There is a very interesting tool, especially for people who don't have the rift, to understand how resolution/low persistence improves VR experience. Follow the link below:

use mouse + arrows to navigate

have fun :)

According to that tool 3840x2160 low persistence is the minimum i would be happy with.

YES 4K looks sweet, but I think Even CV1 is digestible. Movement makes lines to disappear.
