Is it possible to run DCS at highest settings with the DK1, or do the settings have to be decreased for the best experience. If so I'm surprised as the Oculus team has talked about the Rift requiring high hertz and high frames for the best experience. High frames with combat flight sims are sometimes difficult to attain.

Until the CV1 is at least in reviewers hands, there isn't anything to research. I would also expect much extra hype trying to convince people that an upgrade is mandatory if they want to use a VR setup. Of that, most of it will be BS.

Why wait, these arcticles are already popping up, even if they're just teasing future tech a bit: http://www.roadtovr.com/two-reasons-buy-new-gaming-rig-oculus-rift-cv-1-release-date-consumer-version/

For the Oculus to be used effectively you need at least 60FPS or else you start getting motion sickness. I could only get 60FPS on the DK1 in DCS by playing everything with the lowest settings.

Hoping EDGE solves this issue.

Is Rift worth getting at the moment? Or should I just stick to TrackIR with a large HD screen? I saw some videos on Oculus rift in DCS and it looks very interesting, but I'd like to hear what someone who owns one has to say.

Why 60 fps?

The rift dev kit version 1 is no longer in production. They can only be purchased used. I sold mine on eBay last week. Any of the videos you've seen are likely DK1.

The dev kit version 2 has been available to pre order for a few months. They are sold first come first served. The first kits are expected to ship in July. If you were to buy now I think it will ship in August.

None of us have used dev kit 2 so can't say if it's worth purchasing. You could buy a dev kit 1 but it will be used and could cost more than a new dev kit 2 (mine sold for a lot more than I paid for it). Finally there's the consumer rift which is hoped to appear before the end of the year. No specs have been finalized. Unless you're really desperate I think you should wait and see how things pan out with dk2.

Why 60 fps?

There are a lot of factors that contribute to vr sickness and low frame rate is one of them. The low persistence technique in dk2 will require even higher frame rates to work correctly. I think the refresh rate is 70Hz. It's hard to say yet how lower than 70fps will look on the new kit (the consumer version is rumored to be 90Hz).

We should have a better idea of the system specs etc required to run DCS on the Oculus Rift DK2 during E3 next week. If the Oculus works well it should be a far more immersive experience than flying with Track IR and a HD monitor.

Now of course we are all thinking those gloves would come in great for clicking switches and such in our DCS cockpit, but it would also be awesome to use as ground crew to park aircraft or line them up for the cat on a carrier.

We need a virtual pilot presence (avatar) before I'd go for controlVR. Otherwise we have the same disconnect that we have now.

The Black Shark and P-51D both have this if you press Right Shift + P

it's weird that there is such an apparent disconnect simply because of a missing avatar, in real life my body just lurks in the shadows of my peripheral vision and I barely pay any attention to it.

Be interesting to research the proportion of people who feel the disconnect, I do get the impression most can cope without an avatar.

It would be interesting to see if someone could potentially reposition the camera of the A-10C's cockpit view and make an internal pilot model for it. I read somewhere that the MiG-21Bis module is going to have a visible avatar, like in the Ka-50, but don't quote me on that.

personally I don't notice at all when there is no avatar and barely notice the difference when I turn it on. so for me it's a nice to have but not at all important.

it's probably worse having an avatar that doesn't animate in real time with your own movements than not having one at all.

This is what I meant when I referred to control VR. I think you'd need to see the avatar arms move with your own like in the controlVR video for it to be worthwhile. That poses other potential problems though. You'd need your physical controls to be positioned correctly to match the virtual cockpit, one to one movement of your controls versus the virtual controls etc..... Don't get me wrong it would be great to have this but without the animated avatar I don't see it being any more useful than the trackball on my collective that I'm using now. At least not at $600 for two arms.

If they succeed in adding haptic feedback next year as planned then I'd consider it but I'm convinced it'd need an animated avatar.
