  2. Thanks, DJ. I appreciate that. I'm just trying to show the capabilities of the AI Ship mods in DCS. Right now I create mods based on motivation so I was pretty motivated to create the USS Virginia. I finished her in two days but that's because she's a simple model. Not a lot of moving parts like most of the modern ships. After I release the Sovremenny I will create another older mod to escort the Forrestal. I will release some small patrol boats with the Sovremenny as well. The Ukrainian Gyuza Artillery boat and the Grachonok-class anti-saboteur boat will not be sitting beside each in DCS like below. They will be at war against each other. Hey VR I knew what you meant. Thanks. Sorry to hear about your Dad Citizen. I know the feeling. I remember the LY Spear while stationed in Virginia. You're exactly right. DCS brings people together from all over the world. I can see it clearly through Googles analytics. Regarding the ship mods. I see more people from the US, UK, and Russia using the AI ship mods. That's why I will be creating AI Ship mods for all countries.

  5. I think I mentioned previously that my father served in the USN. He was on the Ashtabula, the L.Y. Spear, the Detroit, and the Platte. Dad and I got into flight sims when I was quite young - 12 or so. Before we had the internet, we would take turns flying A-10 Attack! on the Macintosh. Later, we flew together in Dawn of Aces, Warbirds, and I think a short stint in Aces High. He went down the dark road of NASCAR racing simulation, but got a real kick out of screenshots I sent him of your assets in DCS and always had a story to share about whatever particular ship I had screenshotted from above. I think he was really happy to see the AS/AO/AOE classifications represented in a sim. I think he toyed with the idea of getting back into flying with HBs F-14. A few months back, Enigma likened DCS to a digital museum, a place where history can be preserved and explored in a non-destructive manner. I don't disagree, but there's something more to it for a lot of folks: DCS can serve as a connection to memories in a way that a brick and mortar museum cannot. Dad passed away late last year(on Thanksgiving day of all days), and I still feel a small connection to him when I fly over the L.Y. Spear or Detroit. My point is that while your work is important to a lot of people because of the capability and class/type representation you bring to DCS, for others the assets you create serve as a connection to memories and relationships past. Thank you.

  8. Dear Currenthill, your work is wonderful. May I put in a request for some Cold War assets. I understand this depends on model availability but the game sorely needs more. Especially so for 80s Naval based operations. European Navy’s are almost non existent at the moment. Think Red Dawn Rising era. All the best.

  9. I want to thank every single one of you for the help and tips. I managed to do 3 successful attempts, two of them were without disconnections. The tanker was S-3B with Wake Turbulence enabled. Here are key points or things that made huge difference in my experience. Understand how trim works. I just need to hold the jet level for it to auto trim itself and there is no need to touch the trim button. Approach the tanker with about two knots faster until connection, then I start working the throttle. I found that I was afraid of fighting the stick to remain stable on basket approach xD. For the first time I felt like I have control on the jet and I'm forcing it to remain stable until connection. Just very small stick movements to fix the pitch overshooting that happens whenever I panic. I will take a few hours break and do it again.

  12. Ok, something's been annoying me for a while. Doesn't come up every day, but every now and then I see a post that goes something like: "I hope they spread out the release dates, and have a module sale early, because I can't afford to buy module A and module Y at the same time." Now... I get that for a great many people, the price of a product might be too high for someone at times in their lives. But the part I don't get is, a gaming rig is not cheap. nor are good solid GPU's. And even basic flight stick is anywhere from the price of a full module at release, to a huge investment for a quality HOTAS with great pedals, outstripping even a top end new gaming rig. And then you feel the need to upgrade your GPU, maybe add some more RAM. It's an expensive hobby, no doubt. But then I hear people complaining about this or that module being "too expensive", or "why only 20% off the sale?" What.the.HECK.?!? I get that times are tough, and things are sometimes not affordable. But... of all the items we buy for experiencing DCS, aren't the modules themselves, EVEN AT FULL PRICE, the most inexpensive piece of the DCS budget ?? Ok, ok, yes, if you buy EVERY single module, then yea, the total module cost for every aircraft, every warbird, every rotorbird, every "Teen fighter", add them all up, that's a LOT of serious coin. But then, those who are on a real tight budget, are you actually buying EVERY module? is a 20% off sale still unaffordable to you? Or am I misreading the situation: gaming rig is 7 years old, GPU 4 years old, don't have a full HOTAS but making do with a 7 year old T.16000m and saving up for a pair of used rudders? All modules that you DO have, and not that many in total, were bought on %50 sales? Look, I'm not trying to criticise, few of us can have unlimited funds for a hobby. I'm just trying to better understand the situation of the truly budget-minded DCS pilots, perhaps in the hopes of greater understanding for the industry, and the community as well. So if you are in this kind of situation, and you wish to share, then please share as much, or as little, as you are comfortable! Things to share might include: your current specs, when you last upgraded hardware, a rough idea of modules and maps you bought, a rough idea of your money situation, how you manage to enjoy the DCS hobby despite limitations, how has your hobby strategy changed over time? In general it's good to share, especially if it helps gain understanding among others! Edit: for myself, I got GPU's used from friends, and I also buy HOTAS used for cash.

  13. In the middle of the news about warehouses, these new API functions quietly tiptoed in the back door with 2.8.8.43489. This probably deserves more publicity, its not every day year we get new API functions. https://wiki.hoggitworld.com/view/DCS_func_autoCapture https://wiki.hoggitworld.com/view/DCS_func_autoCaptureIsOn https://wiki.hoggitworld.com/view/DCS_func_setCoalition Sample code: local Airbases = world.getAirbases() for i=1, #(Airbases) do Airbases[i]:autoCapture(false) end for i=1, #(Airbases) do Airbases[i]:setCoalition(1) end for i=1, #(Airbases) do local coa = Airbases[i]:getCoalition() if coa == 0 then env.info(Airbases[i]:getName() .. " is neutral.") elseif coa==1 then env.info(Airbases[i]:getName() .. " is red.") elseif coa==2 then env.info(Airbases[i]:getName() .. " is blue.") elseif coa==3 then env.info(Airbases[i]:getName() .. " is contested." ) end end This turns off autocapture, set all airfields red and prints out the result in the dcs.log. So the point of these new functions are that mission developers are no longer dependant on the existing DCS inbuilt function which determines the coalition owner of an airbase by a set of rules. What are the current system rules? By default, an airbase will revert to its Mission editor defined coalition if there are no units of a different coalition within the 2 kilometre radius (1.08NM) of an airbase center. The API funciton getCoalition() will return the result "3" if there are both coalitions in the 2km radius and on the F10 map, the coalition will show a blank. Statics can also challenge the airbase coalition, oddly, but planes and ships have no effect. i.e a blue static in a red airbase, unchallenged makes the airbase Blue. Until it is destroyed then it releases the airbase back to red. If a coalition remains unopposed in the 2km radius, including statics, but not including planes/ships, then the airbase changes the owning coalition to the presently inhabiting coalition. Players and AI can spawn at the wrong coalition airbase without issue, if the designer has set that to happen, either via scripting, or slots or Late Activation. ATC and rearming stops when the coalition is not the same as the players aircraft. AI planes without an airbase that RTB's will not pick an airbase of a different coalition. These rules have formed the basis of how we've played with DCS base capture since the game began and has been used as the basis of games by pioneers like BlueFlag. What is the new variation using the API? autoCapture() switches off the above system and the map does nothing. setCoalition() allows the Mission designer to force the airbase to adopt a new owner coalition. autoCaptureIsOn() returns the setting per airbase, if autocapture is on, allowing different rules per airbase. What benefit is available to the Mission Designer? Without the forced rules, Designers can use any system logic whatsoever to change the owning coalition to one that suits their design. Some examples (food for thought) include (and are not limited to): Not flipping the airbase owner until a specific threshold of units, time or type are met (maybe type, to prevent your single infantryman changing the map, or quantity, or the passage of time or the presence of specific units like ammo trucks, fuel, ammo etc.) Not flipping the airbase owner until something has been destroyed elsewhere, or certain zones or towns around are occupied. Increasing or decreasing or moving the airbase capture zone, or linking them to a MOOSE class. Using balancing mechanics like CTF rules. Specifically discounting infantry and statics, but including ships, or just adding planes, for example, to allow players to land and self-capture. Locking base capture down to specific player transport vehicles to emphaise those logistics guys Buying it via a menu item. Linking an empty warehouse to setCoalition() in order to force the coalition to Neutral and prevent services if the airbase is empty/neutral. Link capturing to warehousing so that warehouse contents are destroyed on capture Because access to airbase facilities and slots is often (not always) a driving factor in current DCS multiplayer meta play, having control over how a base flips coalition can now require more gameplay hoops to jump through, opening up more diverse gameplay possibilities. It certainly opens up campaign play to become a little deeper, rather than a single infantryman that is difficult to find. My own hope is that with C-130 and CH-47D on the SA page, a new meta can emmerge where logistics becomes pivotal to enabling the virtual fighter pilot gameplay and thus the two can need each other for escorting missiles to forward airbases that now need supplies.

  16. @USSR_Rik I am NOT having any issues with SAVING the adjusted view - this is still working fine, as it always has been. I modified my FOVs a long time ago and I checked that SnapViews.lua still contains my custom FOV values - they are there. Before reporting this, I even deleted the file and then set the FOVs up again, and then checked the file again, because I assumed that the file format may have changed. The issue we have is that the stored FOV for the default view is NOT LOADED anymore automatically from SnapViews.lua since Update 2.8.8.43489. What I found out however is that pressing { Right Ctrl + Num 0 } triggers the loading and after that everything is working as expected - but this is only a workaround and not how it was working before Update 2.8.8.43489.

They are the following: Pilot: Tail Flood Lights up/down - map to the Landing Light instead. NAVFLIR Gain/Level knob - Inoperative. HUD NAVFLIR Contrast also minimizes HUD Brightness. WSO: No Refuel Disconnect stick mapping. PODS Switch mapping - inoperative. TPOD Gain/Level knob - Inoperative. Finally, I would really like to see Anti-Collision light on/off discrete state commands. Thanks!

  26. Good afternoon gentlemen, today I present to you my finished cinematic composition and share my insights after 18 months of work. A little background: I am an aspiring screenwriter with 15+ yrs experience, and the last 8 yrs I have been focusing my efforts specifically on new approaches to music in cinema. I have become a fighter jet hobbyist/dcs fan over the past 5 years. DCS is extremely convenient for producing cinema, here's a few tricks I learned: The ability to pause and slow time is the single best feature in this simulator for filmmaking -Pausing time allows for more complex camera choreography. Example: a scene where the camera choreography has 8 actions would be near impossible to perform correctly if not for the ability to pause in between each camera movement. Of course once you have that footage you can easily remove the paused portions in the video editor, making it all smooth and seamless. I record all footage in Slow Motion -Slowing down time also makes complex camera work easier to pull off, but also recording all your footage in slower speeds means higher fps once you speed it back up, and any lag or stutters get minimised too. -Another benefit to slow motion recording is the ability to shoot scenes with ridiculous amounts of units and missiles/bullets flying around. If your computer cant run it smoothly, then simply slow it down enough so you can run it and record it smoothly. See the final naval battle in my movie as an example. Mission editor and Replay mode are world class here -The fact that dcs is a simulator and focuses on realism and customisability rather than storyline/characters is probably why its so good for cinematic purposes. The one thing missing from the replay mode was the ability to pan lateral (move camera left and right), but in the past few months they added that, so there's really nothing missing that I can think of. What about actors? -For the most part I used AI units to perform most things and gave them simple instructions. When needed, I piloted a jet to do a specific action that AI cant be programmed to do. Dont forget to use offscreen ai units for help. There's many scenes in my film where a jet shoots down an enemy and then flies very close to it to admire the kill. I always had an offscreen ai unit shoot that enemy jet down, so I could just pilot my jet and make sure I get close to it when it explodes. Transitions matter for movies with wide spaces -When your shooting a scene that takes place in wide spaces and high altitudes, transitions can help. The whip transition looks very sleek (when you whip out of a shot and into the next one in one motion), but for aerial filmmaking it serves a real practical purpose in that it can help create spatial awareness in the viewer. The direction you whip the camera can help the viewer keep track of where everything is located in this giant stage. Camera shake -Someone mentioned once that camera shake interferes with recording because things explode near camera. I don't believe you can turn off the explosion shakes, but you can easily minimise them in the video editor using the stabilizer feature. See exploding guns at 02:38 in the above version as an example. This feature will zoom in your footage a bit, but does the job. Convenience of using a simulator makes a huge difference -Making a movie using DCS really feels exciting like I am on the cutting edge because of the convenience of production. You have unlimited shooting time, no safety issues, no issues with weather and daylight. If top gun was filmed on a simulator rather than in real life, a lot more of the movie would take place in the air, where the fun is. Utilise reverse footage In one shot, a f18 joins his strike partner in the air and approaches from below doing a cool rotation before parking right next to it. In reality this shot is probably impossible, if you rotate your plane you will lose altitude and even if you came from above you would still find it difficult to stop on a dime right next to the other. The solution was to start next to the other jet and rotate away. When you reverse that footage you get a really splendid shot @ 01:29 in the video above.

  27. Hi I wont droll long. Im into simming since 90s, went through all of them. Literally. Last few years Im back into DCS (was there when MP was crap in many ways). I tried almost all modules and bought alot. F14 trial I left for the end. Because....suggar for the end. I dont know where to start. Cockpit is the best out there, most detailed and spot on. Sounds also. Buffeting is spot on and I think not existand in any other module (at least to that level). FM feels believable though I never flew real F14. Its gorgeous plane. And a legend, ofcourse. Carriers are something special in this sim. Immersion. F14 will be insta buy next sale. Now I cant wait for F4. BTW most of my flying time I was playing WW2 planes (in all sims). But I think early/late cold war jet era is kinda sweet spot in DCS for many reasons. Cheers Tvrdi Disclaimer: Im very aware of the bugs, some missing stuff, some limitations etc. But thats a game, right? Nothing can be perfect. Its best what we have.

  29. I think Nipil just hit the nail on the head. My own impression (and also what I have heard from ED) is that documentation isn't the problem as far as the 9.12 is concerned, but getting the legal rights to do it is. So I must admit I never understood the talk about it being a possibiity for a (supposedly foreign) third party to develop it for DCS - I mean it would still be distributed via ED's software, so it not like they could just claim to have no involvement in it.

  32. Long tracking aerial shots using free cam mode? I understand how difficult that can be. I didn't do any of those. I know free cam following a jet in flight is tricky, they move so fast up there, and getting all the jets in one frame isn't easy because of the distances between them. Reminds me of that tragedy on the filming of a twilight zone movie where some actors died because the bonehead director wanted the helicopter close enough to the actors on ground. Aerial shots are tricky cuz of wide distances. I had the different problem because im doing high tempo action: most of my shots look stunning but there's no time to appreciate them. For example look at 01:37 when a f18 gets shot at and does a full loop. That 10 second loop is so beautiful, especially with the camera rotating around it and seeing the background behind it, but I had only 1.5 seconds to show the maneuver. My entire film is full of stunning shots but no time to appreciate them all. I choose to work with music, resulting in a higher tempo. Frequently as an artist you got to sacrifice one thing to have another.

  35. I have exactly the same problem as bwRavencl! Did a test just now with the OB update that just got released (2.8.8.43704) and the issue is still there! I even backed up my SnapViews.lua (that has worked for over two years now) and deleted it to make DCS create a fresh one. DCS saves the FOV value of the DefaultView but DCS does NOT load that value even when quitting the mission and DCS. This even happens when switching slots of the same module in a single- or multiplayer mission. (e.g. in the same "game session") What I did in the past to set my default view: - Pause TrackIR - Zoom Normal (NumEnter) - Set up preferred Zoom/FOV and "Cockpit Camera Move" Positions - Save Cockpit Angles (RAlt + Num0) And that's all I needed to do for the past two years This method stopped working correctly with Open Beta 2.8.8.43489 How it looked for the past two years: What I get now when joining a mission: And the workaround is pressing the mentioned "Cockpit Panel View" (RCtrl + Num0) twice followed by "Zoom Normal" to make DCS load the default view in the SnapView file.

  37. This has always been one of my biggest complaints regarding wing rip in the f5. I'm okay with there being some kind of failure mode, but the lack of feedback as you approach the point of wing rip is very frustrating. This feedback is something I feel Heatblur's Tomcat does well in contrast with a lot of other DCS modules. If the f5 wing rip is here to stay, I'd like to see both wing rip and approaching wing rip feedback applied consistently across all DCS modules.

  43. Refueling facilities and services operate by volume, not weight. And since the external tanks don't have a fuel sensing probe to calculate the fuel quantity, the refueling personnel can only tell the aircrew how many gallons of fuel they've pumped into each external fuel tank. Different fuel types have different densities, therefore slightly different weight per volume. If the fuel type is set to JP-8 on the FUEL page, the aircraft performs the conversion for the crew, but the crew still needs to input how much fuel (in gallons) has been pumped into the external fuel tanks. However, since the external fuel tanks in DCS AH-64D are always loaded and then filled with 230 gallons of fuel, just multiply 230 by how many tanks you have installed, and input that into the FUEL page. Easy. Now, if you want to figure out if you can physically take on the weight of the additional fuel, given the environmental factors, just multiply the total number of gallons you plan to take by 6.7 (the weight in pounds of each gallon of JP-8). Professional aviators aren't stupid, nor are they like the fighter pilots in the movies with the cool sunglasses and the scarf waving in the wind, hopping into their cockpit and simply taking off into the sky. If an aviator spends years learning complex aerodynamics, procedures, weapon systems, munition ballistics, tactics, etc, simple arithmetic is not going to be a hard thing for them to do, nor is something so rudimentary as performing fuel calculations prior to takeoff going to be what causes them to crash.
