I thought I should clarrify something. In an earlier post you heard me say Tandem Rotor aircraft are very stable but in my last reply I said they are inherinetly unstable. I know that sounds a bit contradictory so I would like to explain. 1. WIth load carrying a tandem rotor aircraft is the easiest and by far the most stable platform you will have. CG control is extremely lax compared with a conventional aircraft. This is not to say that we didn't have to consider it, just that it was eaiser. In fact, prior to any flight we had to computer a PPC (Performance Planning Card) that considered everything from weights, altitudes, torques, etc. We also were required to compute a weight and balance form. We generally had a stack of "standard load" variant cards of each that we carried that we could reference, usually just to knock out our hover power checks and verify everything was capice. But outside of that we never were all to concerned with it. It was only with the heavier, non-standard loads that we would actually really have to dig into the weeds on that stuff. For example, hauling another aircraft under us or the gun crew loads I mentioned. Otherwise, the Chinook is incredibly stable as a lift platform. 2. Flying, with AFCS is incredible. When I tried on the AH-64D simultor I was shocked at just how little stability providing systems that aircraft had. I had to think "Is this how those barbarians live!" The Chinook has pitch control, roll control, altitude hold, heading hold and that was in the old CH-47D models. You get into the CH-47F the aircraft literally can do EVERYTHING for you. So with AFCS (or more correctly DAFCS in the F model) she is an INCREDIBLY stable platform. 3. Flying, with AFCS off. That is an entirely different story. As I mentioned before, the best way to describe it is trying to balance the aircraft on a pin set in the middle. There are these things called strakes and spoilers and a blunted aft pylon which provide a bit of change of the airflow over the airframe giving some stability but you will be dancing on the on controls to keep her straight and level. Don't try to do any abrupt maneuvers as you will likely find yourself facing a direction you had not intended. Each control inputs needs to be deleberate and thought through with counter movements in all the other channels at the exact same time. And once you get to were you want to be you will find she keeps wanting to go in different directions so you will constantly be making counter movements. To be honest though, if you can fly the Huey you can fly the Chinook AFCS off. In fact, hands down the best sticks in the Army were Kiowa Warrior pilots. They have no stability systems that I am aware of and man, can they fly! The one problem people tend to have when coming over from a tail rotor aircraft to a tandem rotor aircraft is remember DO NOT USE PEDALS when taking off! We had a huey guy who came over to chinooks. His first few flight taking off was a nightmare as he instinctively would kick in pedal to counter torque. All that does in a Chinook is cause you nose to spin! I can say, as the newb in this world of DCS but having tried a number of airframes, have faith! ED will give you a good product. Everything I have seen so far has been amazing and I am positive that even if the EA is missing a few things they will get it to you and I am positive you will love flying the Chinook! Some maneuvering tips and tricks for all of you in the chinook: To turn the tail around the nose use counter pedal/stick controls. So Left pedal, right stick should cause the tail to spin right around the nose. To turn around the center hook, just use pedals. To turn around the tail, use coinciding stick and pedal movements. So left pedal, left stick should cause the nose to spin left around the tail.7 points

DAFCS is the Digital Automatic Flight Control System. Trim is what I described earlier, beep trim in the pitch and roll channels. Force Trim, hell, I only flew the F model for about 200 hours so I could forgetting offical names and I have to say ED seems to do pretty darn good research on their modules so it is very possible they are right and I haven't flown a chinook for nearly a decade. But going off my old memory, I really don't remember anything called force trim. We had beep trim for the inflight modes and hover hold and hover beep for hovering modes. Of course, what we could be seeing is me remembering slang and forgetting actual names. If that is the case, I would put money on the table to say they are refering to the Flight Director system. If that is all that is missing, yeah, it is a significant part of what made a difference from the CH-47D to CH-47F and when they do get them up and running I am sure everyone will be most impressed with the stuff. But I would say you will have more fun. My heart belongs to the CH-47D were I was a pilot and not the CH-47F were I was a system manager. Of course, to each their own on that. I know many who couldn't get rid o fthe D's fast enough. But I for one loved flying. Heck, even in the CH-47D I used to spend a large part of my time flying with the AFCS off. Actually, that reminds me of something that happened to me in flight school. Flying AFCS requires a LOT of attention to everything the aircaft is doing because you can quickly loose control if you don't. For short spurts this is not usually to much trouble for most. But the longer you go you get tired. While in flight school my instructor pilot had me do AFCS off and I was pretty good at it. I also had a pretty big ego. She told me "You really fly AFCS off very well." My dump butt said "Yeah, of couse. I am awesome!" I got to spend the next two hours flying AFCS off performing all my maneuvers for the training that day AFCS off! I learned from that point on when complimented just say "Thank you!"7 points

I've been holding off on pre-ordering. So I'd like to thank all of the folks bitching and moaning, about an Early Access product, for helping me make up my mind. Pre-order complete. Looking forward to July 3rd, or whenever it may end up in my hands.6 points

After due consideration, and contemplation over the last few days, I have decided to continue! @Gogi12 Thank you for your comments I will change my work flow to focus on quality, not quantity. @Seaside You have been a dedicated supporter for a long time I appreciate the compliments! @352ndDeacon My friend, I have known you since the beginning of my modding journey. You, above all , deserve MY praise for your help throughout the years. THANK YOU! @tripod3 We have known each other for much less time, But You have great talent I am happy to assist you in any way I can. Thank you for understanding. And your comments. @bbtbmb I will continue, rest assured. @Beldin My good sir, Your comments took me by surprise! I know we ended our collaboration on a less than stellar note. My fault. i was hasty, and inconsiderate. and I I apologize. Please see your PM I have a offer you can not refuse! And it does not involve horses heads in bed! @Chap2012 I thank you as well All these votes helped sway my decision. To that end. please wander over to the Warbirtd hanger I am leaving something just for you all! Merci! I am humbled!5 points

I'm sure they will. An amateur did the CH-47D on X-Plane which had some obvious errors but overall was VERY good! How much better will be a professional company like ED!5 points

Another tip. In the chinook if you find yourself in a settling with power situation the best way out is left stick. The forward most part of the rotor arc and the aft most part are both spinning towards the left. By rolling to the left you get them most lift and will recover quicker. If you roll right the only area of lift you are getting is over the tunnel.5 points

I pre-ordered this the other day. I still had some miles spare and who wouldn’t want the Hook? Should be interesting to see what we get and how it develops. There’s nothing like the sound of em. Hope we’re all pleasantly surprised. At this point I’m banking on at least getting two engines, a couple of sets of blades and some nav lights. We’ll see.5 points

My main gripe right now is the exclusion of NVGs on release, though mind you, all and other elements that are going to be kept out are just as reasonable complaint points. I just can't understand it no matter how hard I try. They even included them in the trailer! Why? Chinook is a helicopter that is extensively used for special operations by most of its operator countries, even despite not being the heavily modified MH configuration that Yanks use. Netherlands, Greece, UK just to name a few. Throughout the many years of GWOT, night flying was a key force multiplier for all NATO participants and Chinook brought such advantage forth for many. Chinook is a work horse and an excellent air assault helicopter. Thing with Air Assault is that it does not simply stop at night. It's a round the clock racket, flying back and forth to deliver supplies, evac cassualties and provide a general airlift capability for their ground counterparts. The night flying capability is an absolutely vital part of this rotary aircraft. If this was a D or C model during the days of Desert Storm, where a lot of guys were opposed to NVGs and chose to fly with MK1 eyeballs at night, sure, that would make some sense. But this is an F model. Already by the time F was introduced, not a single pilot was allowed to call himself a fullfledged one until they've had an ample amount of hours under goggles and demonstrated their adequate profficency with them. If anyone was to make a campaign for the CH47 now, they wouldn't be able to delve into the incredible world of night time operations that Chinook realistically offers. This is a major misstep in my mind. I'd get into why having functioning AI crew that can give out calls is vital to the operation of Chinook as well, but then I'd need to type out an essay4 points

Wenn ich immer nur das gekauft hätte, was ich regelmäßig fliege, hätte ich viel Geld gespart.. Egal in welchem Sim.

Folks we do understand those of you who have concerns. We have shared our plans for early access and beyond, and have let you know the change in the patch date to accommodate us with a little more time. If early access is not something you like or enjoy PLEASE WAIT, the last thing we want is people using early access and expecting a finished product. Early access takes time but the team is working very hard currently. With your feedback and bug reports during early access it helps create a better module and we couldn't do it without your assistance. Again please remember if you have pre-ordered you have a nice discount and get to participate in the early access development of the CH-47F, it is going to be a lot of fun for those of you who understand this process. thank you and have a great weekend. ---------------- please stay on topic in this thread, off topic posts will be removed4 points

As some of you mentioned the lack of Royal Navy vessels with DCS world, and I posted a picture of a Type 42 batch 3 destroyer within the Admirals thread. I wasn't planning on releasing, but decided to throw caution to the wind and give it a go. The Type 42 Btch 3 ( extended hull) will come with : Sea- Dart surface to air missile sysytem 2 x Phalanx CIWS 2 x 20mm Oerlikon 1 x Mk8 4.5 " Deck gun 4 vessels of the batch 3's will be available HMS Edinburgh HMS Manchester HMS York HMS Gloucester There's She can support Helo's up to the size of Merlins. There's a basic damage model, so she can take damage and can sink. Beldin has been working on the lua, as there was an issue with the missiles not launching, and the scale of the seperate sea dart on the launcher wrong. Textures are not the best, they were fine for me for what I was using her for ( eye candy) The attached screens may have different Ships numbers so disregard. I will look to release once ED fix the coding for the missiles3 points

This is currently happening to most other aircraft in DCS as well. The files have already been send by ED, us and other thirdparty devs to Windows and friends for whitelisting. Gotta wait for them to update their DBs.3 points

I am glad you brought this site up. Check out www.chinook-helicopter.com! This is a great site that has TONS of information about the Chinook. System manuals, operator manuals, history, pictures, disposition of various tail numbers, etc. I believe they only have up to the CH-47D in regards to operator manuals but many of the systems are similiar. The biggest differences between the D and F is all the extras that came with the DAFCS system (namely Flight Director, Hover Hold mode, and hover beep) over the AFCS system. Additionally, having a glass cockpit versus steam guages so accessing various systems had different avenues of approach of course. But overall, same aircraft! So the website will have lots of great info for anyone interested!3 points

Just installed Sim Haptic and man, what should I say… It works!!! After having tried Andres SimShaker for aviators incl. the Sound Module, as well as the “Buttkicker” Hapticonnect Flight Pack software, I was very disappointed by the performance of those software packages and my Buttkicker Gamer Plus. I mean, both software packages work to a certain degree but either they are to complicated to install and run (SimShaker) or not all features work (Buttkicker’s Hapticonnect)! Sim Haptic on the other side is easy to install, after setting it up ist starts automatically with DCS and all features work. You can even choose between different effects for each point. I’m a Newbee to DCS and it can be very overwhelming at some point, but this is the kind of software I really like. Georg3 points

I'm just looking forward to flying a great big chopper. The Mi-8 is fantastic but it needs a paintjob, and it's old school, which is fine, but I want some new tech and those fancy MFDs as well. For comparison, the Apache has taken a while to have everything implemented, but it's a pretty damn nice chopper. Not that I understand half the system though. Since the Chinook is all about the flying, I can see myself getting deeper into flight management, and that's okay with me. Lots of my DCS time is just flying around for fun.3 points

I flew it last night for a bit just to see if it worked. The Harrier and the Eagle both failed authentication and I had to exclude them from my AV. The radar’s gone altogether for me. I flew it around but ended up going in like a dart. It crashed DCS to desktop but I did hit it hard . it’s gutting, they did a great job of it up to a point.3 points

Welcome to DCS . Technically, you can install and uninstall any maps or modules that you own as and when you want to. You could have one map and fly one aircraft on it then swap them both out for something else but you’d more than likely want your maps and modules on their own drive for convenience? Instant access to all your options is probably how you’d want things without a wait? I do, so I have everything DCS on a dedicated drive. There are different ways to arrange things. What I will tell you is that when I started getting into DCS, clueless as to how it all functioned and with a certificate in incompetent computing I started asking around for advice here. Pretty much the same people that have chipped in on this thread offered advice and couldn’t have been more helpful. They’ll see you alright and will likely still help out if and when things go wrong so you should be ok. It’s highly addictive. You’ll lose hours like they’re minutes and you’ll see red target spots when you close your eyes to go to sleep. That’s if you can get to sleep without dreaming of switches and levers you could buy for your setup indoors. You’ll become a proficient peripheral purchaser too before you know it and will endure hours and hours of monotonous reviews of shiny new throttles and sticks on YouTube. In time, you will yearn for these, for these are the switchy and bright lighty things of our dreams. You will worship at the alter of the prop and jet engine in places like the church of Heatblur or the temple of latter day Polychops. You could be teased by your peers, sacrilegious types may even describe DCS as a game (the banished ones) but you will push on with your ‘training’ as dedication is key and is what will make you a better ‘pilot’ . Enjoy .3 points

A few things here: First, ED called it "force trim" themselves, so if anyone is creating confusion, it might be ED? Exact verbiage from the newsletter was: "After Early Access Launch Features DAFCS trim system and force trim." Second, a few people have requested clarity on what trim function exactly will be included in Early Access, but no moderator or official source has responded yet. Doesn't exactly instill confidence.3 points

Hi, Trust me. 1.2 is far more realistic than 1.1. The 500, despite being without any stabilisation, is super stable in the hover. And in calm wind, properly trimmed out, it hovers almost hand free. Btw, Nick Lappos wrote somewhere that LTE is Bell excuse for poor tail rotor design. I never had any troubles with 500 tail rotor authority. even during rather dynamic maneuvering.3 points

As a former Hooker I have to ask, what is force trim? I only flew chinooks for about 13 years with about 2000 hours but I really do not remember a force trim anything. The Ch-47F had a trim switch which used Mag Brakes in the flight control closet to hold the flight controls in a specific position you set with mag brakes. The trim switch just "inched" the stick forward and back or left and right using drive motors inside these Mag Brakes. A series of Extensible Link Actuators (ELAs), springs, Control Position Transducers (CPTs) and a DASH Actuator helped maintian a general attitude and airspeed without needing to much attention. Additionally, the system was tied into the AFCS to allow for heading hold. You turned the heading bug, the aircraft turned to that heading. The thrust had something similiar but it was called a CCDA (Cockpit Control Driver Actuator). It did pretty much the exact same thing as the Mag Brakes except it was also tied into the Altitude Hold feature and would move the thrust channel of the flight controls to maintain either baro or radar altitude depending on which was selected. Anyways, very simple stuff that the CH-47D before it had and provided for a VERY stable platform without the need of to much pilot attention. What you are probably hearing that may not be available with the EA release is the Flight Director (FD). In the CH-47F, you can literally take a PIMCA card out to the aircraft, load a route you programed on a laptop, pick the aircraft up to a 10 foot hover, engage flight director and the aircraft will fly the entire route controlling heading, airspeed, altitude, without the pilot ever touching the controls and then come to a 10 ft hover within 3 meters of your plotted land point. All you have to do is land. This feature also provides features like hover hold, hover beep (alows you to beep your hover positon fwd, back, left, right by a foot at at time with trim switch), hover altitude beep (allows you to beep the altitude up or down about a foot at at time at a hover). It is very awesome and we older pilots hated it. First, because we saw all the young pilots loose their control touches and stop being able to do things like pick up a load without it and second because it made for some pretty debatable tactical practices that I won't get into. Don't get me wrong, it was nice to be able to fly a cross country flight eating my lunch while the aircraft did all the work and they are certainly impressive toys to have but it is not real flying. We even called it system management, not piloting. If that is what is missing from the EA release, trust me, you will survive. You will still get a chance to feel the impressive nature of a Chinook without it. Now, I will say this, the one bummer thing about the FD not being up, if that is the case, is you will miss the very sexy voice of the Chinook. I had a stick buddy through the CH-47D to CH-47F transition course who used to like to turn it on and off just so he could hear her voice!3 points

Version 1.35 - 20240620 -- HOT AND COLD Most of you server owners and many of you single-players know the 'dread drill': when the designer of a mission that you like prefers the other player start-up option. Be it HOT or COLD, there always is roughly half of you who prefer the other. Expansion is one of those HOT missions, and yes, I hear you kind souls who prefer a cool mission be COLD. As we all know, DCS's Mission Editor makes the process of changing player aircraft start-up painful indeed. Expansion has some 170 aircraft, and changing them all to the other option will see even the most diligent of us in tears after the third update. So I talked to the fine people over at the DCS Web Editor project, and fantasized about an option to switch all HOT player aircraft to COLD. A short while later I was blown away: the Web Editor now has a feature that can change all client (player) aircraft to HOT or COLD - with a single click, within a split-second. So thanks to the DCS Web Editor, Expansion now comes in two flavors: Expansion (as before) and Expansion COLD - all player aircraft are cold & dark. Brrrrrr. But I know that people will love it. And anyone else who needs to update or adapt some of the big classic missions that come at one temperature: head over to the DCS Web Editor, and check out this incredibly helpful tool. Other changes in 1.35 include: Version 1.35 • AWACS respawn now pre-wipes existing aircraft • stopGap stand-ins now are all neutral and no longer attract attacks • HOT (default) and COLD startup (COLD provided by DCS Web Editor https://www.patreon.com/DcsWebEditor )3 points

Delay it after so many have paid for it? When so many have complained so much about how long products take to get released - as recently as the F-4E - after they have paid for it? I bought it, even though I don't like glass cockpits. Most of the "unannounced" functions people mention here as a reason for not buying it are not a reason to not buy the helicopter. Maybe they will come, maybe they won't. If you don't like it, don't buy it - or don't buy it until it's developed to your satisfaction. Why all the endless whinging over an unreleased product is beyond me. Sign of the times, I suppose - especially here on ED forums, the apparent whinge central of the flight sim world. The excuse "because we're passionate about flight simming" is pathetic. If you want to fly it on release, buy it - if you don't, then go away and fly something else or buy it later. Endless complaining not required.3 points

For some visitors, It's also the only way to get a taste of the flying experience when their health does not allow it. We were visited by other distinguished guests. Part of the crew of a government Airbus A-319, They made an extra low pass . And pilot of JAS-39 Pavel Pavlik - commander of the 21st Tactical Air Wing in Čáslav, who had a virtual dogfight with his own son flying in nearby PC in F-16. This one smells to me like a bellows intake freeze. Especially bc u were flying so high before. Bellows pull hard aft bc they measure abnormal pressure, the sudden high G cause the bobweights to counter and it all repeats. In this case, pull the ARI CB (left subpanel), the TRIM and STAB CB (right wall) and disengage the AFCS and STAB systems (left console) to fly manually as much as possible. Trim neutral so that once you resolve the issue your plane isnt going to go bonkers immediately. Push the stick forward to counter and stabilize level flight and keep it there. Descend to hotter air and hope for the best. Fun fact, a colleague got smacked by his FFB stick when he had a frozen bellows intake :D2 points
