I apologize if this has been asked before. I always use DCS in VR however to trouble shoot settings and things like that, it would be easier for me to look the monitor.

How do I run DCS on the monitor instead of the headset.

Thanks, I know it's probably a stupid question.

@jameslockridge you can deselect enable vr headset (or summit like that) in the vr settings. But then it will just be monitor and nothing will show up in the headset till you enable it again. Not sure if that’s what you’re after? :)

I use SkateZilla's excellent DCS Updater GUI utility, has option to start DCS with VR on or off.

I just pulled the trigger on a Reverb. My Rift S started acting up and after going through a excruciatingly long trouble shooting with Oculus, it is back in their hands and I am waiting for them to get around to sending me a replacement. I am not real thrilled with their service right now.

So....what do I need to set up to be ready for the Reverb. I have never used a WMR headset before.

Is the Reverb, the " best " VR at the moment ?

With having in mind you need picture clarity first and foremost for it being the best in DCS - yes it is.

"best" is a tricky one, as the answer always is it depends!

In terms of pure image clarity the Reverb is king but it doesn't have as good optics as an Index so there is much more degradation as you look towards the edges. The Index is remarkably consistent in this respect but when looking at gauges or picking out objects nothing beats the Reverb IMHO.

The Reverb doesn't have a physical IPD adjustment and seems to have a broken software adjustment, so if your IPD isn't around 63.5 then it might not be so good. Mine is 65 and it is great.

The Reverb has a smaller FOV than the Index and much smaller than the Pimax. FOV adds some presence and of course means to don't have to turn your head around quite so much trying to see behind you.

The Reverb's audio is ok but not fantastic, the Index is great, the Pimax has no headphones.

The Reverb's quality control was dreadful in the initial release. Believed to be fixed now but still a bit suspect, though HP seem very good at replacing units now they have stock.

In spite of the above for me it is the best VR headset for seated games (the WMR controllers are weak and the cable design poor for standing and moving around) simply because that image quality is the closest we have thus far to monitors. Though having had both Reverb & Index I would be happy with either for DCS. The Index didn't play so nicely with my sim racing kit (EMI issues causing grey outs) and iRacing runs much nicer with the Reverb. Plus I use speakers so the audio doesn't matter.

I’ve had mine for four days now and with help from ....Thud guide......Bignewy..Smoker...and tweaking settings.....I can tell you it’s an incredible experience. I was able to run 90 megahertz In Steam VR and steady ... getting 60-80 FPS on Nevada instant action and on a buddies server..

It Stays 50 to 70 on TNN. It took a lot of reading for me and a few key messages and FaceTime help.... but I just about have it dialed in.

Hopefully soon when stock arrives in New Zealand I'll be upgrading from the CV1 to the Reverb. I absolutely love the CV1 and if that's as good as it got I would be more than happy, but with a new system I can now push something better and after a lot of reading and research I think the Reverb will be the best option for me. I would like to ask those who have it about the vents, the biggest hassle I have with the CV1 is fogging, do the vents help with this? We are about to hit summer down under and I can see the CV1 will be a bit of a pain with sweat so I am hoping the Reverb will be an upgrade in this respect. The setup is freaking me out a bit but I'm sure I will be able to figure it out in the end. I'm also a little worried about all the reported problems as well but I guess I can fall back on the Rift is it fails on me. Looking forward to it!

That's great to know guys, I'm really excited for the upgrade, still interested to know your thoughts on the vents though, is it effective in keeping fogging/sweating down?
My Odyssey would fog up until I got the prescription lense snap on lenses. It just took long to warm up.

The reverb also fogs up pretty quickly. But it also warms up much faster. If you want you can just activate windows mixed reality portal and let it sit there a few minutes to warm the lenses up.

I plan on getting the snap on lenses for the reverb too. Because I have to keep my contacts in otherwise and after a long day of programming at work it's tough to keep contacts in your eyes without drying up.

It does fog up really easily, like SZE said. The way I dealt with it on mine was to remove the nose seal, it comes out really easily. I actually removed the nose seal to make it so I could peak at the keyboard like I did with my CV1. It had the added benefit of getting more ventilation to the lenses, so they don't fog up during the warm-up period.

I used to play DCS on a 24" Full HD (1920x1080) Monitor with Track IR for years. Then I replaced my old monitor with a 35" curved Ultrawide (3440 x 1440) monitor.

That change alone was amazing, until I tried DCS in VR with the Occulus Rift.

The level of immersion of the Rift made me seriously reconsider using a monitor for simulators but the resolution and global image clarity was just very bad, so I waited.

Later, I tested the Occulus Rift S with DCS and Elite Dangerous and that experience convinced me it was time for me to switch over VR for good.

That being said, knowing the HP Reverb had a much better screen resolution I tried to buy it first.

Sadly, the launch was a failure so I bought the Rift S instead. It was available and the price was a good deal at the time.

The image clarity was much better compared to the old Occulus Rift and I enjoyed it a lot for both simulators and other type of VR games.

But I was still disappointed by the screen resolution and the level of image clarity of the Rift S when playing DCS.

So when I got the word that the HP Reverb was "fixed" and available in France, I knew what I had to do.

Now, I am using the HP Reverb and I can tell you the image clarity is much, much, much better compared to the Rift S.

Really, the higher resolution is what makes it so much better for DCS.

With a resolution of 2160x2160 per eye, I do not feel the need to artificially increase the pixel density or to use any other image filtering.

And because of that DCS runs much better !

I invited a friend who has always played DCS on his monitor.

He was trying to make up his mind about switching to VR or not.

I made him try the Rift S

After that he was convinced that VR was the way forward for simulators and was already preparing to bring the news to his wife (lol).

Then, two days later, I told him to come back and to try the HP Reverb.

He was blown away.

The higher resolution did the trick. He could spot and identify contacts from a much greater distance and read the flight instruments more easily compared to the Rift S.

My wife tried both VR headset with different VR games and she never had any issue with either of them.

She was impressed by the better image clarity of the HP Reverb but we both prefer the Occulus Controlers, tracking is better and they are more comfortable to handle.

We both wear glasses although we didn't have any issue to keep them on when using a VR headset, the Rift S has more room to accommodate them.

I have an IPD of 65/66 and I never had any issue with any of them.

The Sweet spot of the HP Reverb seems smaller but the overall image clarity outside of the area is not that bad compared to the Rift s anyway.

The Rift S is much more intuitive and easy to install and setup.

Installing the HP Reverb made me uninstalled the USB 3.1 drivers provided by the company that integrated them into the MB to replace them by the standard Windows drivers for example.

Otherwise it was not working at all.

Plus you need to use the beta version of the Windows Really for Steam VR to make it work with Steam VR.

You have to install Windows 1903 update to make sure Windows Really portal is updated as well.

This is not a big deal for me since I work in IT for the last 15+ years but a regular user could have been a little bit annoyed by all that.

Would I go back to the Rift S for DCS World ?

Hell no !

I hope Eagle Dynamic will allow DCS to support the HP Reverb natively and improve the performance in VR as well.

I've read that you shouldn't use any soap or additives/chemicals on these lenses as it can damage them. Just soft microfiber cloth and maybe water to dampen the cloth and clean the lenses.
