  1. Ok, snowless winter is done and below you can see a sneak peek of it. I spent many hours adjusting the mod to 2.8 lighting, making sure target spotting would be possible. The REV2 will be published tomorrow, so stay tuned! I have some good feelings about it!

  2. Doh. Sorry guys, the mod won't make it today. I've encountered a bug while testing all four seasons for the last time. I'll publish it as soon as possible - tonight or tomorrow morning, depending how fast I'll fix it.

  4. Yall catch a lot of flack (very passionate player base) so I figured I would share my mind. There is nothing like this game out there. The visuals with 2.8 are a decent improvement, the BFM AI is extremely fun... I know 2.8 hurt some performance (myself a VR player), but I do know that rewriting an engine is no joke. So keep it up, I get to spend countless hours getting smoked by my old man (former adversary pilot) and many other things. 20 years ago I could never imagined I would be strapping into a F18. Keep working the core of the game and the future will be bright! Keep the glass side up

  5. oh right! Althought I assumed he also did it with a converter. There are around 150 textures for the external model, another 150 in the liveries folders and +250 cockpit textures. And thank you too for the feedback @Rudel_chw, sorry I forgot to mention you in my previous post

  6. Wags viewed the thread last night and it is now set to "Investigating". So, fingers crossed that the team is looking at this now. I agree with your sentiment. It is difficult to believe that 4.2 introduced a very different behavior than what is described in 3 & 5.

  9. There is a difference to knowing how the F-14 works, which we're all here for, and how the code-side of things works. It baffles me a bit that you have the impression that we do not love to talk about our work and how things are done, because I would still like to think that we're among the developers that are both forthcoming and communicative - at least we try to be. But we make these modules for you guys to have fun, and while I do appreciate curiousity - in the end wanting to know how everything is done on the code side, seems to distract from having fun with said toy more than it adds. Besides, some things we can't and don't want to disclose, because those are business insights not meant to be out there. That's perfectly normal, and I don't think you would expect other businesses to disclose their inner workings to you as much as we are sometimes expected to do. That has nothing to do with "big business" (we wish) or being "totally super serious" lol. There is simply a certain limit to everything. And there is also a major difference between for example asking "how does stores drag work in DCS" (which would be a question for ED, btw, not us) and asking "you should tell us how everything works under the hood." Finally, when we say "this is a too complex matter to explain to you fully", because the time needed for that simply isn't besides the above mentioned reasons, there is also a point where you need to accept that. Stores drag in DCS is a complex matter, so is an FM such as the F-14s. Moving one piece, moves all pieces, like pitch with power, etc. etc. It is a balancing act, that includes some 30.000 calculations and tens of thousands lines of code. That is not something that can simply be explained in general. If you have questions particular to the F-14s performance, then feel free to ask, and we will do our best to answer, if we can and want to. Which is a decision we need to make on a case by case basis. And if you have questions to how the F14 works or should work in particular, we will always try to answer to our best abilities. That said, this 35 page long thread, in majority, should have answered most of these questions already. Finally, there is also a difference between wanting to know how we do our job, and trying to tell us how to do our job, with a complete - and normal - lack of insight.

  10. We have to be patient and wait. I am pretty sure this is high on prio list. Still would be nice to get confirmation.

  12. Hi NineLine, your point is totally understandable, and i can only hope that the people stop discussing based on only a feeling or if something makes sense or not. That is normally not helpful for such evidence based discussions (and this does not only apply for this topic). The problem in this specific case is, based on publicily available documents (MLU Manuals), we can see how the behavior should look like. We also mentioned the specific page where you can find the description. And this is the reason why its hard to understand that the team refers to MLU manuals and claims that it should look differently. Hopefully this is also understandable from your side. Nevertheless, I also have to admit there is still a small chance that they really changed the behavior from M3 to M4.2 and then back to M5 but to be honest, this time I have a gut feeling here Maybe you have the chance to talk to the team again about this topic and have a second look into the manuals or even better, short question to a SME what will happen if you release TMS and there is nothing to lock. Will the ellipse stay slaved to the LOS? Thank you!

  13. Dear ED, I love your sim and it's an important piece of software to me. I don't understand why development is being prioritized of features that further increase CPU frametime and CPU load given that it degrades performance not only in VR, but also for 2D monitor users and exacerbates general desync and warping of multiplayer servers. I can only imagine there's a large number of users who like DCS for the experience of simulated flying with no interest in multiplayer or competitive play. But I think that DCS in its full glory, at its fully realized potential, involves dozens of humans interacting in a complex battlefield with interplay between different modalities (air to air, air to ground, ground forces), allowing for intelligent work to be done at the levels of strategy, tactics, and ultimately individual skill, resulting in a combination of some futuristic chess-like strategy with the fine motor coordination and spectacle of formula 1. I have nothing against the simmers (is that what you call the aforementioned group?) I respect them very much. But I think the promised land for DCS lies in this direction, and it requires good performance. I won't harp on why VR is so important and the inevitable future of flight sim (unless you provoke me) but I believe that too is the case. I know you're working on multithreading. It's just very discouraging to see updates that further hurt performance to add things as relatively trivial, if you will forgive me, as rainbows and weather. As it is, for many of us the DCS experience will be limited to simple training in private servers with small numbers of friends. Please give us hope that you're moving in the right direction. With respect, LK aka Stampede

  14. You don't understand. If it's a different airframe or engine it's a new FM, period. It's also new 3D model and new cockpit. Years of work, nothing close to a few changes. A new module.

  17. It seems, from my point of view, the manual got missinterpreted by ED. They concentrated on the first part of the behaviour which is clearly "correct as is" (without the reported bug) but do not pay attention to the second part (Page 77 MLU M3 Manual). And the second part describes implicitly what should happen after TMS is released -> the FCR will try to lock within the ellipse (clear part) and if there is nothing to lock, will stay slaved to the LOS as long as no event of page 77 will happen. This part would make no sense, if you always have to do TMS FWD to slave the ellipse/FCR. And I can't imagine that this behavior has changed from M3 to M4.2 and then back to M5, as mentioned the post before.

  18. We had 4 aircraft out for the show, 3 as static displays and 1 that flew. The TA-4, F-4, and F-100 were static displays, and our Me-262 flew both days in the show. Wings Over Houston is hosted annually on the airfield where we keep the aircraft, and are more than happy to participate every year. Our goal is to get the Phantom back in the air, and once that happens she likely will go back on the airshow circuit. I don't know for sure as that is down the road, and we have to get her flight worthy again first.

  24. @Eight Ball With the dds files by Eight Ball the loading time and the performance are much better (no stuttering and fps drops anymore when I look around in the cockpit). Unfortunately the readability of the cockpit instruments is much worser than with the original png files. It seems as if they wouldn't be "anti-aliased": With original PNG files: With Eight Balls DDS files:

  25. from the manual: nullOn the heating panel there are two switches for the "windshield". "demist" and "rain removal". The manual suggests that only the latter is relevant for icing conditions. But I figured both probably work with hot air and it doesn't hurt to use them. The only switch you should only operate when really needed is the engine de-icing, because it limits your thrust.

  26. For the reason unknown to me, recently we've had a few internet "discos" where I live. No internet, a couple of times a week, for a few hours. As a result I switched to run DCS offline routinely. Whenever there's a DCS update, I go online, install, and go offline immediately afterwards. Thanks to that the "window of opportunity" for the internet provider to scr*w my DCS is smaller

  33. I don't think you guys understand the correlation between higher Object/Poly Counts in a Scene and it's effect it has on DX11, nor the scripting or core of the sim being single threaded. Moving away from DX11 and ST will change everything in terms of Scene Size Limits, as well as AI and Physics Limits, The FPS you get back, will likely be more than anything you lost in the updates, as you will have 2 major bottlenecks removed from the sim. The Team working on MT and the Team working on Vulkan are separate from the teams working on modules, terrains, environment engines, weather engines, Dynamic Campaign Engines etc. It doesnt make business sense to tell them all to sit around and wait for MT and Vulkan before they start integrating anything. The weather and clouds in 2.8 might seem like just graphics, but it's not, what you see is just a fraction of what the weather engine does.

  34. yeah this is what i mean, it's about the intentions and the priorities that the actions taken so far reveal. the upgrades @Silver_Dragon enumerates sound great but shouldnt performance degrading changes be done after those updates, not before? Do you see what I mean? For some of us , these are game breaking changes. I wasn't even going to post, i was considering just not flying anymore good lord this is a comment and a half isn't it? i don't measure myself by competition. i like to compete because it's fun and it pushes you to be better. also, if we have these incredible combat machines, it makes sense to use them for combat. i said in my OP that i respect simmers who are there just for beauty and vibes. but to what extent to the detriment of those of us who actually want to fight in these fighting machines? i'm not saying rainbows and clouds are useless. i'm saying it they are revealed to be too high a priority right now, in my opinion, compared to fixing the already very suboptimal performance of the sim. if it turns out that i'm alone in this or that i'm just a tiny minority, at least i'll have voiced my opinion before i leave. i don't want to leave but i'm also not going to keep suffering 25 fps in VR on a multiplayer server with an nvidia rtx 4090, it's just not fun. i sincerely wish you a good vibey sim flight.

  35. No, it does not prevent users from joint MP servers with trial modules. It's to prevent trolls from making multiple fake accounts and ruin the game for others on MP servers. Pretty sure you're alone with this request. Remember it only prevents users without a single paid module. If you have one paid module this doesn't apply. Sent from my MAR-LX1A using Tapatalk

  36. Vulkan and Multithreading aren't a holy grail. What we'll likely gain in FPS, as a result of these, are the FPS we lost over months of updates. Optimizing DCS requires far more than these two, it requires a change in mindset to prioritize optimization first. Changelog history shows a repeatedly poor pattern of optimizing last, especially when it comes to LODs which have taken years to implement such a minute and simple concept. Not to mention the current problems, such as the ballistic issue, that continue to hinder the experience in DCS. If there was a genuine care for performance and optimization, those issues and bug reports wouldn't be sitting around for months or years. Phrase it as diplomatically as you want, but this is the reality.

  37. I can only confirm that. I have a super fast M.2 SSD Before the 2.8 update, it only took a second or two after being seated in the helicopter for all textures of the cockpit and world to be loaded. Now I can watch how each individual element gets its texture.

  38. In addition to SP mode as mentioned above, you can also just quickly set a Markpoint with the HUD/HMCS and the TGP will slew there automatically just like with steerpoints. On the ICP just hit #7 and then that'll give you the circular Markpoint symbol in your hud. Slew it and press TMS UP short twice. The lat/long will populate on the DED. Press #0-M-SEL to automatically select it and the TGP will slew right to it. If you want to use the HMCS, after hitting #7, use Dobber right to cycle through the TGP/FCR/OFLY options and then press TMS UP LONG and the circular markpoint indicator will be in the HMCS. TMS UP SHORT once to ground stabilize, slew it where you want, then TMS UP SHORT again to set the markpoint, M-SEL to select it. Sounds complicated but with a little practice it goes really quickly.

  41. Greetings. ED you spent all this time with the weather and the 2.8 update, however Rain is still clipping and passing through covered aircraft shelters, and into Hangars. Looks great on the canopy, however should not have raining on the canopy effect when we are starting in the hangar. Not track needed. Aircraft on any map starting in any covered position with rain on. Thanks Shrike

  43. I just want to say that this isnt a very scintific way to messure RCS. You could make the nose area smaller or bigger as you want and I dont see why you why you marked the whole canopy area of the JF-17 but not of the F-16 or why you marked the top of the JF-17 tail bigger than the one of the F-16. Beside that there are much more factors like material which influence the RCS. I would say you see what you just want to see
