Hi, it's time to introduce the complete team here in this thread. Vietnam War Vessels is not really a single person effort! Here's the team in alphabetical order: Beldin: Hello, I've played computer games basically since they were invented. Aviation and military history enthusiast. Long time Recording Engineer going back to the analog tape days. I started modding games for personal use back in the early 2000s. DCS is the first game where I've attempt to share my efforts with the community. Citizen: Hi, I'm Citizen! I've been an avid flightsimmer since I was very young. My first game was Microsoft Flight Simulator 4.0 for the Macintosh, and it was A-10 Attack! by Parsoft that fully cemented my love of the genre. Like many others, I'm also a fan of the Operation Flashpoint/ARMA series, and I keenly remember being annoyed at so many servers transitioning to some weird zombie mod. For better or worse, DCS is the high water mark for military flight simulation, and I'm glad to be a very small part of pushing the genre forward. Hawkeye60: I am a 3D modeler, Astronomer, Master gardener: I won the silver plate award at the USA Topsfield Fair, Engineer, Tech addict, Amateur Musician, Flight sim addict! Been flying sims since 1986 on a Apple 2E Sublogic! Bought every sim since! Eagle Dynamics has been taking my money, and been a member of the DCS community since 2016 but flying it since 2020. Started modeling back im 2017 with Markindel, Crazyeddie and Stonehouse, the best of times. Odyseus: Hello, my name is Odyseus. I love all things military. I've started modding back in 2003. I had zero experience but I really wanted to learn. So I joined multiple projects in the ARMA 3 community. I ve been playing video game since I was a little kid and I always like a passion for simulator. Now I've the opportunity to bring some of my work to DCS by helping with the Vietnam War Vessels mod. Petr005: I'm a hobby 3d modeler and I've been involved in multiple projects: RHS for Arma 3 and up, various Squad mods and the infamous Burning Lands Vietnam. I find the Vietnam War period interesting as a modeler and look forward to contribute to the Vietnam War Vessels mod. seabat: They taught me how to march down the middle of a street when there was perfectly good sidewalks. They said "did you see the bats in the cargo hold?" I had not so I went to look. Never saw them but as I actually went to see bats the name stuck. Learning how to do liveries for DCS Modules now. Spino: Hi, Spino here! I got into flight simming about ten years ago with the Microsoft Flight Simulator series. My first combat sim was CFS3, which really got me hooked on combat aircraft simulation. About five years ago I discovered DCS, fell in love with it, and never looked back since. TeTeT: I'm TeTeT, a long term DCS and Arma 3 player. I started modding with Arma 3 and expanded late 2023 into DCS. I've been interested in the Vietnam War since a long time, played various boardgames like VG Vietnam, Downtown, Silver Bayonet, Platoon back in the day. Since 2014 I joined the Arma3 Unsung Vietnam War mod team and now run Vietnam War Vessels for DCS. We're building and rigging assets for the Vietnam War era and focus on AI assets. toan: I'm an aeronautics enthusiast and I have been using DCS since 2020. Because I'm also a pilot and amateur sailor, I'm quite addicted with DCS naval assets and naval aviation, testing large carrier groups battles, and enjoy testing multiple ships, aircraft and weapons. Whiplash: I'm Pedro a.k.a "Whiplash" from the beautiful country of Portugal. I'm a modder and one of the developers behind the S.O.G. Prairie Fire and Spearhead 1944 DLCs for Arma 3. I am deeply passionate about gaming, particularly within the Mil-Sim and Flight-Sim genres and everything Vietnam War related.11 points

Hello everyone, Alphajet Model Update The exterior 3D model is 98% complete, with only a few details and corrections needed to achieve the highest level of realism. The animations will be finished once these remaining parts are added. The interior 3D model is also well advanced. We need to add one object (knife) in the front seat and improve the seat texture for greater realism. For the rear seat, some animations are still needed, but the bulk of the work is done. The pilot and helmet are in progress. Regarding the EFM, the current results are very promising, thanks to feedback from former pilots. We are moving in the right direction, we are runing study on the stall part for the best flight expérience possible. In terms of code, several instruments are already interactive: altimeter setting, lights, formation and position lights, anticollision lights, and some other details for you to discover. Currently, the tanks, cannon, and smoke pod are implemented. There is also the possibility to change color in mid-flight. As for the textures, the base is nearly complete, with a few bolts and plates still to add. For the liveries, we are preparing a variety of paint schemes that will be available upon the mod's release, including Patrouille de France, 3/8 Côte d'Or, ASD, Flying Bulls, Qatar, and more. If you would like to help with the liveries, please send us the desired paint schemes in the Alphaskin channel, including the cutouts of insignias and registrations, as well as high-quality side, top, and bottom photos of the aircraft. We will keep you updated. Happy flying! The SplitAir Team screen by ©biwi5 points

They were allowed a 100 ms response delay as a result of any filtering. I don't know if that is what the delay ended up being exactly IRL or what is measures to in DCS, but those displays ran at 60 hz while receiving data at 20 hz. This required using a 3 point interpolator as a visual aid based on MIL-STD requirements at the time to produce a dynamic display defined as visually continuous (no less than 55 hz). Interpolating a 20 hz signal requires at least 50 ms plus some computation and routing time, thus the delay should be between 50 ms and the 100 ms limit. MIL-STD-1472D from 1989 describes all these requirements, including that gross numeric presentations must not exceed an update rate of 5 times per second. In the DCS F-16C HUD, everything updates at 20 hz. This is wrong and we can likely guess where that number came from. The bearing tape, elevation bars, reticles and target boxes were updated at a smoothed 60 hz from their 20 hz data input. The numbers displayed in boxes ( Velocity, altitude, and bearing ), all updated at 5 hz. This is also true for the HMCS. All components displayed in motion were required to be appear continuous. A 30 fps HUD tape that shows a new elevation bar location on every frame may not prove that a display component should be at 60 hz, but it is solid proof that 20 hz is incorrect. A 20 hz display recorded at 30 hz will always show elevation and bearing tapes that sometimes do not change from frame to frame.4 points

Khaellito I hope you like my screenshots , only used the DCS in-game filters (they are amazing). 1. Recreation of the Top Gun Maverick scene (best movie ever). I used the Top Gun and the Raven One campaign skins. Blue trainig missiles, over Nevada. 2. Aerial refueling with the squad. Pilot looks at the sunset in a quiet moment and thinks about how cool he is. 3. Hornets chase a SU-33. Suddenly the pilot drops flares and performs a cobra maneuver. Tensions are high on this afternoon. 4. Full moon, VAMPIRE skin, red lights that look like blood. Scary! 5. Neon lights and afterburner rings. What more do you need? 6. I like this picture because it shows the size of the Hornet. Do you love or hate asymmetrical (Double Ugly) loadouts? 7. Canadian fighter jet intercepts a Russian bomber flying in international airspace. 8. MQ-9 Reaper drone fires an Air-to-Ground Hellfire over Afghanistan. 9. Which era do you like the most? DCS has them all!3 points

Video 12/09/2024 = Talking a little about the project. Hello community, I present to you the first test of the UH-1H Huey cockpit. In this particular case, it is for you to observe and help me correct proportions and general shapes. Much of the work is based on photographs, and while I try to be as precise as possible, perhaps someone with real experience with the aircraft might notice things that need correction. Don't expect anything usable, just a white structure of the larger components of the cockpit. In the file, you will find a .jpg image with the steps to follow for installation (it may break the integrity check, meaning multiplayer mode might not work). Please remember to back up your files, and I am not responsible if you need to clean up the installation after use. You can leave comments here on the forum (but please quote me so that I get notifications). Thank you very much for your time. Best regards! ###################################################################################################### Hello community! Today, I want to introduce you to a project I started a few days ago. I'd love to hear your opinions and perspectives on it. About the Project: The main idea of the project is to update our beloved but somewhat outdated UH-1H Huey. As a 3D artist, my primary focus will be on updating the module's graphical aspects with new 3D models and textures (we’ll discuss the scope of these changes and their implications later). However, I don't rule out the possibility that, with the community's help, the changes could be more comprehensive. Considering that the Huey's flight model is excellent, and its systems are quite complete, any improvements beyond aesthetics would likely involve adding new weapons or features. Images (WIP): Progress So Far: Currently, I have partially modeled the Huey's cockpit. There’s still a lot of work to be done, but so far, I think it's looking pretty good. I've attached images of the work in progress. I managed to run some tests in the simulator with the new cockpit added to the old model, and it looks quite promising. I still need to figure out how to make the file changes through the "saved games" folder to avoid breaking the Integrity Check (IC), which I currently have no idea how to do. If anyone is willing to help in this area, your contribution would be more than welcome. -- We need to replace the file located at: "C:\Program Files\Eagle Dynamics\DCS World OpenBeta\Mods\aircraft\Uh-1H\Cockpit\Shape" named "Cockpit_UH-1H.edm" with a new file of the same name placed in the "saved games" folder. Project Scope: Regarding the project's scope, I envision several possible options. Over the past few days, I've conducted a series of surveys to gauge the community's reaction to the project. For now, the goal is the following: A completely free mod for the community that updates the cockpit with new 3D models, textures, and animations. There would be no new functionalities. We would need to find a way to include it as a mod that doesn’t break the Integrity Check. If that’s not possible, based on the survey responses, there would be little community interest in the mod (and therefore, not much reason to continue its development). For those who have installed the mod, the helicopter will function as usual, but with a significantly enhanced level of detail in the cockpit. For the moment, both the exterior model and the interior cargo area of the helicopter would remain as they are currently. Improves on those parts would cost lots of time for a free proyect. The Reason for the Project: Essentially, I usually do things out of pure enjoyment or whim. The Huey is one of my favorite modules; it’s easy to use, fun to fly, not too complex, yet you can spend quite a bit of time mastering it. Despite this, its graphics, especially the interior, are quite outdated. Therefore, a few months ago, I started thinking about updating its textures to the PBR format. This led to multiple challenges due to the way its UVs were created, preventing the proper use of an AO pass. So, I decided to start modeling the interior in 3D from scratch. Estimated Timeframe: There’s no ETA; this is a project I’ll be working on in my spare time. Other Possible Versions: For now, I would focus on the version we currently have. I’d love to be able to choose whether to add or remove the radar altimeter and the flare dispenser at will, to make it closer to versions used in earlier periods of the Huey’s history. I’d also love to add the option for side-mounted M60s without the external hardpoints, as used by Hueys in Vietnam. If I were to develop other versions, I would be interested in a "C" version with various weapon systems used during Vietnam. I’m not a big fan of glass cockpits, so I’m not interested in modeling more modern versions of the Huey. However, these ideas are more like "dreams" rather than concrete goals, and they would largely depend on community support (since beyond 3D art, aspects that require programming are not my strong suit). Conclusion: For now, this is all. I hope the project interests you, and that together we can build this improvement. I look forward to your feedback! Best regards!2 points

So the current situation is as follows, the fix Skate found is working however, it will no longer pull from the F-22 SFM lua, it is calling the F-15 avionics dll as well as the FM dll that means the SFM table is not being used. You also might notice that the plane doesn't pinwheel on the ground anymore due to the use of the F-15 FM dll. Our intention was to not use the F-15 FM and just deal with the SFM table as it let us get different results. You will also notice the plane will stall a lot smoother and doesn't chunk at all anymore again due to SFM no longer being in use. I am working on a fix to the mod to get it back up and running as best we can for now. We will have to evaluate the situation and make a decision on what we can/are going to do moving forward.2 points

funny, my favorite thing to do is SAM hunting with bombs. Okay okay, that only works against the SA-10 and a few other older systems. SA-11s eat my lunch when I try. Also, why is everyone misspelling "Phun to Phly"? I jest. Show me another module where you can carry 22 bombs and 8 AAMs. This module is extremely "Phun"2 points

Hello, Is there a possibility of Dart Aerial Gunnery Target being added to DCS like in real life? Even if it doesn't have a function, it would be suitable for visual training flights. A more compact version of this should be TAXAN. If I remember correctly. Additional Information: Aerial Tow Target - COC Aerospace Inc. (coc-aerospace.com) Thanks!2 points

I wonder….. If the new AIM-174 is based on the SM-6 (which has anti ship capabilities) if the U.S. reduced its propellant volume by half, and then increased its warhead size by the same ammount 1) would it weigh about the same? And 2 would the less propellant just reduce its range, or would it reduce its speed? You see what I am getting at here? Now I don’t know how much propellant weighs compared to warhead material. What if we had an air launched ASM-174 version with a 100 mile range that maintained Mach 3.5 but had say a 300lb warhead or even better a 400lb warhead. The increased speed alone would have to make the missile more of a successful penetrator than the Harpoon or the NSM. Its kinetic energy could make up for a smaller warhead, and being air launched could make up for a cut in range. @currenthill Is it within your capability to play with the variables of the missile to test my theory? (within the confines of the game of course) random thoughts on my lunch break -Woog Note: the P-8’s wing hard points are rated at 3000lbs a piece. Imagine a P-8 packing these instead of Harpoons.2 points

I can agree that VRS seems a bit overdone in DCS, but I wouldn't say that you won't get into it unless it's on purpose. Task saturation is a driving factor here, and if you start to lose your scan on an approach I could absolutely see how you could wind up settling with power. Especially with internal cargo, because you forget it's there. In the 47 at least... High, hot, and heavy are definitely large contributors though.2 points

I am really looking forward to this one, the F-104 has been one of my favourite jets since I was a young kid with a poster of it on my bedroom wall2 points

Been building a list of the DMAS jets for when that time comes, that jet or another from 3TFW that were in Desert Storm are high on the list, and of course a number of the SJ jets, and the Spangdahelm jets. There were somewhere around 180 of the late jets upgraded with DMAS/ARN-101 but fewer wings and squadrons had those jets.2 points

I guess my Pico 4 will go on the shelf. I was running VDXR, also tried the new Pico Connect version lately which runs also really well now with SteamVR. But having OLED back on my eyes since 5 or 6 years now is changing the game quite a bit. It looks so good at this resolution. The last OLED HMD i had was the Samsung Odyssey+ and the PSVR2 is so much better than that.2 points

Teaching Jester to work with you manipulating his cockpit simultaneously is extremely difficult and not really something we want to pursue. In general, you are not supoosed to "play WSO from the frontseat". Instead, we want to rather give you commands mimicking what a human pilot would tell the WSO, such as "can you scan a bit higher? I think the bad guy is above us", which btw is already available in some form with the Jester Wheel Scan Elevation commands. I suspect the "need" for more manual control will get less and less the more Jester learns and becomes smarter. Or once we add planned features like pointing the radar at your eyesight/mousecursor, as in "look here". And when Jester also learns to hear AWACS calls.2 points

There has been quite a few messages since my last reply, and it feels like some people in this thread think I mention all the systems I did in my post merely because I want to sit and LARP useless features, and I can tell you that this is definitely not the case. All the items I've mentioned have a direct impact on the combat effectiveness of the DCS F-16C, as well as the user experience. That is why I mentioned the things I did. As it stands currently, the DCS F-16C is unable to employ most real world tactics due to there being so many missing or inoperative systems, and its performance in combat is therefore very lackluster. It doesn't matter if you're doing BVR, WVR, SEAD, AI, or just hurling some bombs on a target. There's always several aspects of this aircraft that's missing or not working correctly, limiting your combat effectiveness in each of these roles. In my post I also put special emphasis on the SEAD role as, after all, this is the primary role of the F-16CM-50, and the DCS F-16C's performance in this role is woefully inadequate. You also have to remember that the combat environment we have in DCS is quite dated and sterile. In the 2007-era which the DCS F-16C is based on, you'd have much more capable weapon systems to face off against, which for the SEAD role would include things like both datalinked and home-on-jam SAM missiles, integrated air defense networks with intelligent and coordinated SAM operators, GPS and communications jamming, ground based radar decoys, etc. That is why I really appreciate when ED models things in depth, like the INS and its fix functions as well as GPS reception, which now enables the future addition of things like GPS jamming, which is a staple of modern warfare that even civilian aircraft and airliners have to contend with on a daily basis. And if we get GPS jamming, this also highlights one aspect of why the Digital Terrain System is important, as it, amongst many other things, increases the INS accuracy over topographically varied terrain. And all of a sudden, this has ripple effects into mission planning, where you might choose to ingress towards a target over more rugged terrain if you expect to encounter GPS jamming in order to maintain higher INS accuracy, rather than ingressing over the flat desert or ocean and having to do manual INS fixes, or it might affect which weapons you choose to employ, opting for LGB's instead of JDAMs, or it encourages you to actually make use of Offset Aimpoints or VRP/VIPs when engaging targets, et cetera. Just with the addition of a few systems, it makes the experience so much deeper, and it also gives you very good reasons to learn your aircraft more in-depth and to actually make use all the functions that have already been implemented into this product to their full potential. And for those who mainly want to hop in their jet, fly out to the range in a sterile environment, and drop some bombs on targets to blow off some steam after a hard days work, they can still do that. But it also allows people to get so much more out of the product, to get more invested into DCS as a platform, to increase customer retention, and in the end increasing future revenue for ED. These dedicated people who go in-depth are also usually the ones who creates a lot of content which benefits the entire community, stuff like tutorials, complex missions and campaigns, video content, etc., which entices new customers to join the fray and turns their toe dipping in DCS into a full submersion. And certain items I mentioned, like having a damage model, doesn't increase combat effectiveness, but it is of course an important aspect of combat. As it is right now in the DCS F-16C, the "damage model" is basically a big boolean. Either you audibly hear things hitting your aircraft, but not a single system is affected, or you die. Compared to other ED airframes, like the DCS A-10C or DCS F/A-18C, those modules actually model individual systems getting damaged, and you might actually end up utilizing emergency and backup systems to limp your jet back to base, and you might actually need to use your knowledge about how the fuel, hydraulic and electrical systems work in order to survive such an ordeal, isolate busted fuel lines, circumvent broken systems and components, etc. So when people claim the DCS F-16C has a damage model, that is simply not true because none of these things exist in what we currently have.2 points
-
You should use point track mode only for moving targets. for waypoints the best would be INS mode.1 point

Hi @f4tca7 Aware of this one, it used to work until recent DCS update. Have fixed it already and submitted to ED. Will be in next update. Hopefully soon. Thanks.1 point

It is a major blast and incredibly fun to have the opportunity to fly with these two guys on a semi-regular schedule. Their talents in creating technical content and testing technical content are wonderfully entertaining. Me? I'm the middle guy that you you have to drag through the missions waiting for them to catch up and generally creating all those "DUH" moments that are hard to program for. Therein lies my contribution...but it's great fun learning all those new things I otherwise would miss. Come join me...download and fly with Mistermann, Devil505, and myself...Wulf103.1 point

Make sure wind speed is higher than 6kts and aligned down that runway. DCS in general has issues with ILS not being turned on unless the winds are specific directions and speeds, but it's particularly bad on Caucasus map for some reason.1 point
