I think you got great answers from @HE5405 and @Rudel_chw. As I mentioned in the FAQ, I've made sure that the internal IDs are different (as well as the names displayed in the menus). Also worth noticing is that the new core assets are named and sorted like EDs core assets, with the asset type first, for example: MBT T-90A [CH].8 points

Unofficial mods will always be unofficial, and I am sorry if you think there is no mod support, but frankly without our platform the DCS modders would not have the opportunity to show their great work. And many of the mods are great, we have even added some to the core of DCS. But not everyone can be chosen to be added. So please do not derail this thread thank you4 points

Not sure abut that one, when all the DCS video'fluencers are basicly flying the Lightning design-mission: Take off in severe clear wether, with too little fuel to "increase performance", kill a couple of dudes in epic high-angle-off gun-engagements and then crash while trying to land ("...haven't read that page of the book yet..."). Dear all, we have cleaned this thread. For now, this thread will remain locked as it has become more work than it needs to be. Currently, we have generally the same 10 or so people debating different things releated or unrelated to this topic. It ends up in angry people, warnings and misunderstandings. When there is something new, it will be added to the 1st post in this thread. If it's something that needs discussion, we will consider opening this thread. Any new threads opened on this topic will be removed. If you have questions about items in the 1st post here, you can send us a DM. Thanks. The ED Team.4 points

Hi, These are the same standard training missions of the Corsair, but ported to the Marianas WW2 Map. Sincerely, the Training that @Don Rudi published a week ago is more complete and detailed, so I debated with myself for a few days if it was worth it or not to share these, but today I decided that it couldn't hurt to have more missions available for the Corsair so here they are: https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/3346409/ BTW, to whoever manages this part of the Forum, I'd love to have a "Missions & Campaigns" Sub-forum, in addition to the current "Wishlist" and "Bugs & problems", please? Here is a little walkthrough of some of these missions: Best regards, Eduardo3 points

Overall, great post. ED has righted itself in the past, it just takes agonizingly long for them to realize their errors in judgement. No one is going to deny the huge leaps that DCS has made, but wow there's a lot of unaddressed issues and certain minor issues take a mysteriously long time to address. It HAS gotten pretty damn frustrating, though. It's to the point I think the MiG-29A is my last first party purchase for a while. I really want the Hellcat, but looking at the issues that have stayed unaddressed in even their darlings like the F-16? For years? Yeah, less confidence in purchasing until someone realizes the project managers have the absolutely wrong priorities.3 points

Let me chime in with both. After a decade of playing (and scripting) ArmA followed by a 5 year milsim hiatus, I've jumped on the DCS train 2 years ago. Generally, I've had a pleasant experience playing the game (after upgrading to 64G of RAM to keep DCS from crashing). I didn't even know DCS is what I've always wanted, until I started playing it after getting sucked in by the Grim Reapers Youtube channel. Right now, nothing else compares to DCS, so until a superior alternative pops up – if ever, DCS will always be the benchmark for a good military aviation milsim experience. While I don't have DCS street cred, I'm a software engineer by trade and I do have 20+ years of coding experience (concurrent, multi-threaded C/C++ systems programming). Eventually, I couldn't resist DCS Lua scripting. At that point, however, my DCS experience changed drastically, as my perspective shifted from mere entertainment seeking to software engineering: The documentation – or better the lack thereof – is frankly embarrassing. Compared to ArmA – which I also cursed at times – and its comprehensive, official scripting docs, DCS is basically undocumented. That's an absolute no go for a product that depends largely on community content creation. The DCS scripting API with its plethora of different, undocumented Lua states and another separate a_do_script() environment is terribly convoluted and thus unnecessarily complicated to work with, obviously exacerbated by the lack of documentation. I implemented a browser-based Lua console as a learning project just to figure out how everything works. What makes matters worse, is the need to maintain this improper API to avoid breaking API compatibility and a lot of community content along with it, as the recent net.dostring_in() change illustrated. Such incisive, breaking API changes should not be released without prior discussion with community developers and advance warning. The scripting API is unnecessarily buggy, up to SEGFAULTS, due to an apparent lack of even basic testing [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]. Modern coding practices, even rudimentary unit tests, and the use of appropriate tools like AddressSanitizer (possibly combined with a bit of fuzzing) should prevent introducing and releasing with such bugs. Although adhering to such practices may sound like overhead, it'll pay for itself multiple times over by obviating a lot of time otherwise wasted by inefficiently debugging code weeks/months after having modified it. The scripting API lacks very basic functions, e.g. Unit.setLife(), with ED hesitant to add it [1, 2, 3]. With the presumably dire state of the scripting system, I do however understand the reluctance to change anything. There seems to be a lack of understanding for the needs of community developers. According to %DCS_INSTALL_DIR%/API/Sim_ControlAPI.html the net.dostring_in() function is entirely obsolete: This is grossly wrong. Many missions, mods, admin scripts, Olympus, etc. would seize to work without that very function. The mission scripting engine is still vulnerable to arbitrary code execution via malicious mission files, despite a (temporary) mitigation being available. This matter deserves urgent attention. All Lua scripting appears to run in the main loop without runtime constraints, allowing a single script with an infinite loop to freeze a client/server. That's an obvious performance issue. The first ArmA already had scheduled script execution. The DCS core presumably relies on a global, locking, all-comprising, single-threaded event loop. Adding a (few) thousand units on the far side of the map (or planet), i.e., far outside of the visibility range, will slow the renderer to a crawl. Rendering is apparently not decoupled from the simulation (i.e., AI, pathfinding, logic, flight models, etc.), although it could and should be for obvious performance reasons. This is most likely owed to DCS' single-threaded legacy. I presume a lot of engineering effort will be required to fix this. The elusive brown crater texture bug and the on-again, off-again multiplayer scoreboard issue, and more importantly the time it took to fix either of them, point towards the DCS core being non-trivial to maintain. All of these issues indicate that there's a lot of technical debt within the DCS core. Eventually, dealing with the bugs and issues caused by such technical debt will crush feature development. I agree with the previous posters that argue for better prioritization of core development time. More time should be allotted to improving the DCS core, including the scripting system and its documentation. Obviously, a full feature moratorium on the DCS core would be too much, as that would interfere with its business model. If strictly required for module releases, features need to be added. However, IMHO, too much development time may have been spent on not strictly necessary features in the past, e.g., the aircraft radio integration of the voice chat system (everyone still uses SRS), the currently incomplete mission state save feature, the botched C-ares integration, and the recent net.dostring_in() mishap to name what's at the top of my head. I love DCS and I'm confident ED can turn the ship around. Take the necessary time to stabilize the DCS core (incl. documentation, pwees!) and postpone not strictly necessary feature work for the time being. I'm hopeful the community will understand. Ask the community for feedback early on before deciding on breaking changes (I feel like the scripting system will eventually need a complete, breaking overhaul). A publicly accessible bug tracker may be another improvement. Using the forum to file bug reports may be susceptible to oversight of straightforward bug reports [1].3 points

The group included planes and crews of the guards units of the Long-Range Aviation: a squadron of Tu-16 of 251st guards TBAP from Belaya Tserkva and two squadrons Tu-22M3 from Poltava 185th Guards TBAP. They were stationed at two nearby airfields, Mary-1 and Mary-2, the only ones available at that time, even if they were further from the target than the border bases (for the "long-range" the difference of 200-300 km was not significant). Mary-1 was home to the 1521st Fighter Air Base MiG-23 and MiG-29, which "played along" as the enemy during the training and periodic inspections of fighter pilots. Here 11 Tu-16s were deployed - three detachments and two control group vehicles. There was a local airport on the other side of the runway, which was another reason for the division of the Long-Range Aviation group. Mary-1 airfield was also used to receive "transporters" with the withdrawing troops, UN representatives were invited there, and the menacing -looking "Backfires" did not fit well into the ideas of Western diplomats about the implementation of the Geneva Agreements. I vote for the Cobra also.. And not a modern one. We all know that the most common criticism heard regarding DCS World is the sometimes iffy correlation between maps, historical theaters, and period-appropriate flyable aircraft. There are a lot of maps now, and a lot of airplanes, so its better than it used to be, but still some real gaps. For example, strictly speaking of helicopters, I simply don't feel very Cold War-ish, flying around West Germany in a Longbow Apache, late Kiowa, or a glass cockpit Chinook. The Soviets have the Hind-F and the Hip, appropriate for the map, so the --only-- next Helicopter I want to see is an 80s version of the Cobra, with the TOW missiles. Start fleshing out the period maps with the period aircraft!!3 points

Open up the comms menu, open Ground Crew ... , select Rearm & Refuel. I'm not CH, but the old Mod Packs are still fully compatible with the newly added CH assets added to the DCS core. The latter are stored on this path: Within the Mission Editor there is no assets conflict, as the older Mod assets have names staring with a [CH] prefix ... while the assets built into DCS have [CH] as a suffix.2 points
-
Currenthill has already covered what to do in his FAQ. The answer is nothing. The new assets are added with a different naming convention. The “core” ones have the [CH] suffix instead of a prefix. So if you have all the assets installed you will essentially have 2 version now, the core versions and the mod version. He has said over time he will start to remove the units that become core from the packs so in future there is no duplications.2 points

The AI “breaks the laws of physics” only to the extent that the input data it is given contradict the laws of physics and basic common sense. For example, take the AI’s data set for the F4U-1: A zero-lift drag coefficient CD0 of 0.0155? Even the P-51 Mustang did not achieve such a figure. CD0 of 0.018 at Mach 0.8 is pure fantasy for a straight-wing aircraft — as is a maximum CL of 1.0 at M=0.8. Such numbers are physically unrealistic because straight wings experience strong compressibility effects as they approach transonic speeds: drag rises sharply, and the maximum achievable lift coefficient drops well below subsonic values. Assigning these “perfect” transonic coefficients effectively gives the AI a wing that defies real aerodynamic limitations. The value of the induced drag quadratic coefficient in this data set is more in line with that of a low–aspect-ratio wing, such as on a MiG-21. A value of 0.09 is far from what an aircraft with a straight wing of the Corsair’s aspect ratio should have. What’s fed in is exactly what it flies with. This is data from a well-known U.S. NACA report, showing the variation of maximum lift coefficient (CLmaxC_{L_{max}}CLmax) with Mach number for several aircraft types and wing configurations, based on both flight tests and high-speed wind tunnel measurements.2 points

What the others said is correct. Unfortunately, the in-game experience with what the tanker tells you is misleading. After an accidental disconnect the tanker is not allowed to connect to you before you cycled your door (restarts the AAR system). This is mandatory to do in The F-4 (IRL as well, ofc) before it can receive fuel again. The tanker in DCS doesnt yet understand this special situation and will gladly put the boom in again - just to immediately receive a message from our code that he must not do this. The tankers reaction to that code-wise currently seems to be to disconnect and conclude you are fully refueled and happy. ED is aware and looking for a solution to improve the user experience.2 points

Ok, after the patch and updating the openXR Motion Compensation to the latest version it works! BUT, MY HONEST and questionable OPINION is that: in the headset even with ULTRA preset and no upscaling looks and runs smooth and fine...BUT with this update, even trying to play around with the settings I'm not able to have a good enough quality in the screen recording as I had with the older PimaxPlay version and Tally Mouse QuadViews Companion.. the %'s do not match and the screen recording looks way worse..so I rolled back to 1.40.1.. I know that screen recording it's something that a lot of players don't care about but I do!2 points

FWIW, I'm running the Super at 0.85 on the render slider with 9800X3D and 5090 (in IL2 however), as full 1.0 was at it's very edge of consistent smoothness. At 0.85 it's 100% good. In DCS, the 9800X3D and 5090 at 0.85, 2 vs 1 QM, gave equally good performance but I doubt it would have been as good with a fully loaded mission. Also, over both Mariannas maps, very little stutter on the deck looking left/right. Despite the common complaints about 'generational improvement', it's clear to me that for flight sims at least the 5090 is a significant improvement.2 points

I believe what they wanted to say is that for a non-expert its generally better UX to have the aircraft shown as primary text and the radar name as secondary info than the other way around. Looking at it less from a challenge/practice perspective and more from a usability POV :)2 points

Yes, it is modelled. The electric system is simulated down to volts, watts and individual wires. This is also why Jester specifically waits and asks if you are done with moving the generator switches around before he starts the INS alignment. A more indepth look (but still an approximation) will be available with the next Phantom build that features the EFB (more specifically its Electrics page) - details in the manual. Cheers2 points
