Happened upon this MIT lecture quite by accident early this morning and ended up watching the whole hour and 50 minutes of it. Fascinating.

Very understandable. Here's hoping it's just a cable problem.

I actually had this crazy idea of using a Teensy 3.2 board. It can act as a usb keyboard controller and also has built in capacitive touch sensing (and it's only £20). So I thought maybe if I attached cables from those sensor pins to the metal Warthog joystick and throttle handle that I may be able to program it to detect when my hand touched or released either, and so send a keyboard command to DCS to turn on and off hands individually as appropriate. Would of course require ED to provide keyboard binds for those functions but might be worth a try. I probably just have way too much time on my hands.

That is definately the new revision of the G2 cable in that link. I can see the tiny power button in the top corner of the link box so you're good. I managed to get one for free as I was within the 12 month warranty but $89 seems like a good deal as I'm sure they were originally advertised at over $200. The new cable solved my AMD USB connection issue which had meant I could only use via an external USB hub. To get the cable for free I just had to call HP support and explain my problem. I used the UK number but I believe the US support number is 1-281-377-1382 I also registered my headset on the HP site before I called them and set the purchase date = my delivery date (rather than my pre-purchase date, which would have been over a year ago)

HP Reverb G2 not working in DCS
ShaunX replied to drbaker's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Shall we say it's as good as any currently available headset (with possibly the exception of the new Varjo Aero) and better than most for that. I've been very happy with mine for nearly a year now. Clarity in the cockpit is excellent, all dials easily readable. Clarity at range is finding a compromise between that and FPS. So if you run with MSAA x 4, resolution at 100%, visible range at ultra, it'll be crystal, but that's gonna hurt your frames. There are numerous excellent mods to tune that. I highly recommend reading the thread I linked to earlier in this thread. Bottom line is it takes a little study and experimentation to nail your best performance, but worth the effort. Your rig is certainly up to it. I certainly have no problem spotting ground targets. -
HP Reverb G2 not working in DCS
ShaunX replied to drbaker's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Doesn't matter. You can ONLY run the G2 via SteamVR. I bought all my modules direct from ED store, but I still have to launch SteamVR to run my G2 in DCS. -
I get the impression that Intel may have taken a leaf out of AMD's book and released gen 12 already closer to it's limit at stock, so it may not actually be worth OCing much beyond an AI OC, or perhaps just tweak a little from the AI OC ?

Just tried 60hz, motion smoothing off and HAGS enabled and I agree, at least in the Caucasus, rock steady at 60fps with absolutely zero drop out/double imaging looking sidewards even rolling over a city. Weird. However, Syria, flree flight instant action, saddle up with the lead hornet and as soon as we cross the city it's a bit of a slide show sideways. Maybe your fancy CPU will handle that ? Not sure if I could get used to the flickering though.

erm, at this rate, psychiatric counselling fees perhaps

That's pretty scary! However, no need to worry, because according to ED, 2.7 and now 2.7.7 releases didn't place any more demand on CPU or GPU LOL! Start saving those pennies again.

Very nice bump indeed. I feel a bout of CPU envy coming on

I must admit, as an AMD jockey, that the benchmarks posted in Jays 2 cents and LTT yesterday are pretty damn impressive (though both are with DDR5) I was a little surprised that Jay compared the 12900K against the 5900X rather than the 5950X, claiming it was the "closest cost competitor", when he'd obvioulsy spent a fortune on mainboard and DDR5 (and maybe cooler ?) to go with it. Regardless, it appears to stomp on the 5950X anyway! I shall wait to see what AMD's 3D cache Ryzen 5000 series variants bench later this year to decide if they're still competative (and hopefully a shoe-in on current x570 boards)

EXACTLY !!! The entire premise of this thread is that users are experiencing performance loss AS COMPARED WITH THE PREVIOUS VERSION. Therefore, The ONLY way to measure that is to run identical tests, i.e. track files, in both versions and compare results. Anything else is completely pointless and proves nothing. (Don't hold your breath though ) ..I for two

fixed POLL - Did you see a fps drop with the latest 2.7.7 version?
ShaunX replied to ACME_WIdgets's topic in Game Performance Bugs
Good idea but you haven't created this thread as a poll. Suggest you delete and recreate this thread, this time, when you create the thread, click on the "poll" tab just below "Create new topic". That allows you to ask a question and accumulate responses automatically in one place. -
VR Shaders mod for better VR experience
ShaunX replied to Kegetys's topic in Utility/Program Mods for DCS World
The 2.7.6 hotfix won't work if you're now on 2.7.7 You need the 2.7.7 version. Make sure you remove the 2.7.6 hotfix first -
I find the fact that the article is almost a year old and appears to highlight a significant defect, and yet nothing seems to have been followed up on it since then, a little suspect. If there were a workaround that yielded better performance I'd expect it to have been be plastered all over reddit and Youtube as usual. Or maybe nobody reddit ?

When that happens I do a reset environment in WMR settings and it's resolved

That's not quite my understanding. An FSR renderscale of .8 means that it will reduce the SteamVR CRM setting by a factor of .8, and then use its own algorythms to upscale back to that SteamVR resolution. (Though only over a central area of the display as defined in its radius parameter). The effect of this is to lower your GPU and CPU framerates while still achieving the same CRM as set in SteamVR (albeit with perhaps some increased shimmering). You specifically don't need to raise SteamVR CRM in conjunction to achieve this. What people have found however, is that the significantly lower GPU and CPU framerates now give them the bandwidth to be able to run at a raised 100% SteamVR and thus achieve even further clarity. Personally, I leave SteamVR CRM at 80% as I would rather use those lower framerates to allow me to run Reshade sharpening (and with FSR "sharpness": 0.0) as I find that gives me better clarity (certainly in terrain detail) than 100% CRM and it also allows me to maintain 45FPS low over Guam !

Sunset Cruise with RAF Tornados (Persian Gulf)
ShaunX replied to Looking Glass's topic in User Created Missions General
Just flown this (yet again!) in VR in my G2 as I wanted to see how good it would be with the new improved water and lighting with the latest OB patch and as expected it's pretty stunning. However, shortly after saddling left on the Tornado flight lead and beginning the slow decent, the squadron's number 2 decides to do that little AI trick of flicking over from lead's right to his left at near light speed. Actually seen him do that on previous ocasions but unfortunately this time he came straight through my cockpit and scared the bejesus out of me as I exploded in flames Quite a shock in VR if you're really not expecting it. So not quite so relaxing on this ocasion LOL. Absolutely nothing you can do about the behaviour until ED sort out their AI of course, but worth watching out for and saddling a little further behind and below lead until 2 makes his inevitable move. Great mission though.- 1 reply

I don't think anyone was suggesting Win 11 it had anything to do with the issue reported for the latest DCS patch. It was just reported on this thread as a seperate issue and any further discussion on it should probably be moved to a new thread to avoid any confusion.

hmmm, from the AMD site.. As of October 21, 2021: Windows 11 update KB5006746 fully resolves the performance impact of Issue 1 described in this article. AMD Chipset Driver 3.10.08.506 fully resolves the performance impact of Issue 2 described in this article. AMD has verified that the performance and behavior of compatible AMD processors are working as intended on Windows 11 subsequent to the installation of these updates. AMD and Microsoft recommend that users promptly install this update on affected systems.

Good Call ! Nice frames Bet you're having a considerably smoother ride now
-
..but have they applied both the Windows 11 update fix and the AMD Chipset Driver fix just released targeted at the known issue with Ryzen CPUS and Windows 11 ? If so then definately very bad news. I'm in no hurry to adopt that's for sure. EDIT: Just read his YT posts and he states that he has installed both the above...so definately bad news !

and that's the trilogy really. I'm struggling to think of any other great war series. Mash I suppose, but showing my age now. The movie Jarhead has very similar Gulf War setting and dark humour to gen Kill
