Have a read though this pilot report: http://www.airbum.com/pireps/PirepMustangBurch.7.html

Nice formation Yo-Yo! Hmm. Is it possible to have ai plane fly with air show smoke on? :pilotfly:

She buffed up nice!

The turn and slip indicator (t&s) is an incredibly important instrument to help maintain coordinated flight once you are in the air. It is the entirely wrong place to be looking on the takeoff or landing roll. You maintain directional control by looking outside. Btw amazes me how in rl some guys with loads of experience seem oblivious to this instrument (and the seat of the pants sensation) as the airplane careens cockeyed through the sky... Oye.

Would it be cool if we could record a track and then fly with/against our ghost aircraft? Seen this in some of the car racing sims... I'm thinking of two scenarios: 1) You fly a flight/airshow routine and then playing the track back, you hop into another aircraft and fly formation with yourself. 2) You fly an air race course, record it, and then fly against your own ghost ship. I have no idea if this is possible, but it WOULD be cool. Oh yeah. Thoughts/comments?

How the heck do you do this (Corkscrew Roll)???
lobo replied to Shaderhacker's topic in DCS: P-51D Mustang
Barrel roll. It's done while maintaining positive G all the way around. Been done in 707, Concorde, and Bob Hoover could do it while pouring himself a glass of iced tea. See the vid: I tried it and spilled iced tea all over my desk. :music_whistling: -
 Very nice! Thanks for this! Couple of suggestions from looking at pics. I think the 11 needs to be a bit bigger and the colors seem dull and faded. See attached pic. Maybe give it a coat of wax? :smartass: It is looking real good!!

Are you sure you have a brake problem or a swirling tail wheel issue? See this thread discussing some strange behavior of the tail wheel: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=88007&page=3

It would be very interesting to have a chat with a real world Mustang pilot who could compare the tail wheel unlocked operation of the actual P-51 vs DCS P-51.

That red button is to engage the control lock. It has two holes in the locking lug. When you use the bottom hole, the tailwheel is locked along with the controls. Using the top hole leaves the tailwheel full swivelling so the plane can be towed. In the sim I have never seen it engaged. or had to disengage it unless I engaged it. I did try it once on the landing roll out. It went into the top hole and then things got really exciting for the next few seconds till the dust settled. :joystick:

There was this from today: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=88733

Here from inside rear cockpit at 10:40

Here is another example of taxing with the tail wheel locked and then unlocked. At :40 you can see the tail wheel is unlocked by forward stick and down elevator. Again at 1:29 the tail wheel is unlocked. There appears to be a difference in controllabilty between the beta with tw unlocked and what we see in the videos of rl Mustang when tw is unlocked. Another where you can see very positive control of the aircraft when tw is unlocked.

Some amazing artists here. Maybe we need a thread for skin requests? I would not have a clue where to begin... Here are two I would like to see. 1. Miss America 2. Bob Hoover's Rockwell International

They were biodegradable. Made of paper. One use. Non strategic material. Lighter than metal. "The British also made their own contribution to the range problem in the form of a new drop tank that accommodated 409 liters (108 US gallons) and which was made of plastic-impregnated paper. This sounds a little crazy, particularly since the fuel would rot the tank if left in it for more than eight hours. Nonetheless, the paper drop tanks were perfectly effective, and were lighter and cheaper than metal drop tanks. Dropping them over German territory also did not provide the enemy with aluminum they could scavenge for their own war effort. Production rates of the paper drop tanks eventually reached 24,000 a month." Just read about them today! http://www.crazyhorseap.be/Mustangs/History/P-51BC/P-51BC_03.htm

As there are no fuel gauges for the external tanks, I am wondering what the procedure was when running on the drop tanks? I've read that they would burn the fuselage tank first and then switch to drop tanks which could be jettisoned if required for dogfighting. If running on the drop tanks how would the pilot know when to switch to main tanks? Time? Lack of noise? What? :book:

It is firing, just no graphics at the barrel. Six bullet holes visible when firing at an object at extreme close range. Also as a side note if you save some ammo, you can back up your Mustang by firing the guns on the ground... Quite the recoil from the six .50's Reverse thrust!

Unless your brakes need to be inverted in settings. :detective_2:

Thanks Viper.

I am thinking the tailwheel physics is still a WIP. Sitting on the ground, engine running, not moving, push the stick slightly forward to unlock TW. Do nothing else. Now watch what the TW does... it will slowly rotate 180 degrees and stop. Even if you keep the stick forward the TW will stop rotation at 180 degrees. The way the TW is designed I cant see how this can happen. In my taildragger experience the only time the TW should flip around backwards is if you have some backwards momentum. It's as if something in the tailwheel assembly physics model is off by 180 degrees. This would possibly account for the difficulty of taxiing with the TW unlocked. Hopefully it is a beta/WIP issue. See this video for an example:

Red Tails Movie - Crazy ass cobra/upswing manouvre?!?!?

I've got to completely disagree with you on this. A person is interviewed for a show and this somehow gives him the right to editorial control and oversight over the content of the program? I don't see anything wrong with what he said. -

I think there are two things. 1st there is Candaleria's description of his maneuver and 2nd there is the video recreation of the maneuver. The video recreation of the maneuver is Hollywood foolishness... His description of the maneuver sounds to me like a snap roll. Snap roll: A family of rapid autorotational or "horizontal spins," not unlike spins. Rotation is induced by a rapid pitch input followed by rapid yaw input, thus stalling one wing further than the other. This imbalance in lift causes the high speed roll. The snap roll was not a recommended maneuver in the Mustang. "The aerodynamic characteristics of the P-51D are such that snap rolls cannot be satisfactorily performed. Attempting to snap roll the aircraft aggressively may result in a power spin." Sounds to me like he did a partial or full snap roll and got away without spinning.
