  1. No helicopter is a “flying tank”, weight is critical so armour is strictly limited otherwise they wouldn’t get off the ground. When armour and helicopters are mentioned it tends to mean the sort of materials an infantry soldier would wear, kevlar, ceramics, relatively thin metal. Consequently even combat specific helicopters are very vulnerable to ground fire of almost any type.
  2. Agree about an EF2000 style Scotland, Scandinavia, Iceland map. As others have said it would be a huge map, but yeah... so cool... You could use it for WW2 scenarios also.
  3. As others have reported copying the folder over and updating the shortcuts seems to work fine. That’s all I did a year or so ago, no messing with the registry.
  4. The rudder is very sensitive, apparently in real life it requires very little pressure on the pedals. Also with the stability augmentation system active it’s very like auto rudder, in normal flight you need very little rudder once you are wheels up.
  5. This would be very handy
  6. Yes, I only used the single player campaign and can’t deny there were huge problems with it, particularly AI behavior. I remember it was ridiculously easy to lock and destroy fixed wing aircraft with the AH64s radar and auto tracking cannon. You could use a building as cover then lock them up as they came into your field of view then then shoot down whole flights with no reaction. You quickly got to know which types of mission the AI would have a decent stab at and which would be carnage unless you led them personally. The concept was ambitious and great fun though.
  7. I’ve always thought the Enemy Engaged series campaign would be a good model for DCS. Yes the EE campaign was gamey, yes as a pilot you actions affected events way more than they would in reality, but the EE campaign did keep me immersed and wanting to fly more missions. I’m a general gamer as well as a sim gam gamer and I’d rank some of my EECH campaign experiences as my most memorable in gaming.
  8. Thanks, I hadn’t realised you could do that as with the real thing. Neat.
  9. The L39 does have to be flown properly. It’s slippery and has little power so it punishes clumsy flying. I do agree that once you can fly it decently there’s not much you can do with it though.
  10. For takeoff Neutral pitch trim Full right ruder trim Prop rpm full Advance the throttle smoothly but smartly to 75%. Apply rudder to counteract the right yaw then left wing drop. It needs a good stamp on the left rudder particularly and the tail will swing a bit. From videos the real thing needs a lot of rudder before the tail comes up. The way it is in DCS looks exactly right.
  11. Yes, looking forward to this one. Beautiful aircraft.
  12. We should be able to drag/drop and show/hide the icons as we wish. Scrolling will only become more onerous as the number of modules increases.
  13. Received mine a couple of days ago and fitted it today. Took around 30 minutes, I expected the old mini stick to be hard to remove but a bit of pushing at the two lugs indicated in the instructions and it almost fell out. Easy re-assembly and the calibration utility worked fine. In game it works much better than the OEM mini stick, much more precise with very slow to fast movement depending on stick deflection. It isn’t perfect, really I’d prefer less stick throw, but it is a definite upgrade and worth £43.
  14. People always seem to want to fly the best performing aircraft rather than the types that were most common and/or saw the most action. The F4F was used in the Battle of the Atlantic and heavily in the most significant early war Pacific battles of WW2. It was used until the end of WW2 in the Atlantic and in the Pacific on smaller escort carriers. At the 1944 Battle of Samar it was F4Fs from escort carriers that strafed the bridge of the Yamato. Eric Brown spoke of the F4F in glowing terms. Saburo Sakai said he would regularly run out of ammo and the F4F in his sights would keep on flying. Bring it on :)
  15. Short term (?), Tempest or Spit XIV with the Normandy map and other aircraft we already have, or on the way. Further down the road and with the channel map incoming I’d like a DCS BOB set, Spit I, Hurri, BF109E, BF110, JU87.
  16. I love the Lancaster and would buy a flyable version instantly. I don’t feel 4 engined heavies are the best fit for DCS though, they need a crew management sim/game tagged on to get over the fact that flying them mostly provides little action. The Mosquito, Beaufighter, Wellington, JU88, JU87, ME110, A20, B25 would make better choices gameplay wise. I do think 4 engined planes would sell though, everyone thinks they want to fly them. It’s just would they sell well enough to balance out the huge amount of work to produce them.
  17. Jeez, imagine how slow it’d be with the rocket pods mounted :D
  18. Just bought this and I’m enjoying it, although I do like GA stuff in other sims. The external model and cockpit are great, I like the FM and sounds. I can understand why people are frustrated that it hasn’t been worked on in a while and feel not finishing it is a bit of an own goal for ED but it’s far from unusable as is.
  19. I hope this change works out. I’ve come back to DCSW after a few years, of driving sims and bought a TM Warthog intending to get back into the A10C initially. With TIR I’m finding the A10C hud almost unusable, I don’t remember having any problem a few years ago with both the A10A and A10C. As others have said somehow the font seems too small to read but the overall page feels too large for the projection glass. Maybe this is one area where “easy read” and “realistic” options are in order? Anyway I At least ED are working on this it seems. Watching this space...
  20. Having something to focus on other than the news could be seen as a positive thing in the current crisis. Encouraging people to spend a few hours distracted by DCS could be good for their mental health, as well as helping ED in a difficult time.
  21. I still hope the Hawk will be resurrected, the T45 would be good with its carrier capability.
  22. The information may be freely available but I don’t think ED will approach anything without written confirmation from the relevant authorities. (The F16 incident...) Getting that written authorisation from Russia will be difficult, officially almost everything is regarded as classified now and bureaucracy is supposed to be incredible. However, ED are working their way through the 90s F planes, maybe that will prompt them to start looking East. There is the big announcement later in the year...
  23. I wouldn’t fancy being stood anywhere near that huge low slung intake either...
  24. My other hobby is astronomy so I hang around outside at night quite a bit... Your eyes adapt quite markedly to darkness but it takes time. If you’re outside on a dark night, even without moonlight, after 10 minutes you can see pretty well. City lighting makes it easy to see, even if you’re not in an area of direct illumination. A full moon casts sharp shadows and can feel uncomfortably bright after a few minutes. Red lighting preserves dark adaptation, astronomers use red flashlights for illumination. A few seconds of white light sets back your dark adaptation so you have to start it again. Once you are dark adapted even what are usually normally illuminated lights and leds will appear blindingly bright. I assume that’s why the DCS A10C has variable illumination levels for the console lighting, the pilot can continuously adjust it to a comfortable level. All of this must make night lighting very difficult to simulate in a realistic manner...
