  2. I just wanted to say thanks to ED for…. everything they do. I’m part of the “silent majority” of DCS players. I almost never post here, I only pay passing attention to all the detailed ins and outs of what’s happening with development, and just play an hour or two here or there each week as I get those rare blocks of time not taken up with work or family. I spend a lot on various modules, but I don’t have much of an “online presence”, so to speak. That’s why I wanted to share this thought. As I was playing the multithreading beta in VR this weekend, I looked out from my F-14 in an extremely heavy mission over to the sun rising over the mountains as I was getting 100+ fps with settings maxed out. And it occurred to me: DCS has spoiled me so much that I can hardly play any other games. I was thinking of firing up one of my old favorites, EECH Comanche vs. Hokum, and I though, “no, it doesn’t have anywhere near the realism of a DCS helicopter. I might as well play an arcade game”. I look at games like IL-2 without the moddability and think “I could be playing all the amazing user-generated content in DCS instead.” I look at MSFS and think “the terrain is nice but the system simulation is so poor relative to DCS, why am I not playing DCS instead?” DCS is the game we all dreamed we were playing as we squinted at our 320x200 version of Tornado screaming along at 2 fps on DOS in 1993 and declared it the future. DCS is the game we thought we were getting every time a new landmark sim came along – Longbow, Tornado, IL-2, etc. You take: 1) The best, most photo-realistic graphics of any sim out there 2) An enormous library of switch-for-switch accurate jet aircraft, helicopters, piston aircraft, multirole fighters, civilian cargo helicopters, and more 3) An astoundingly rich database of user-generated missions and other content, including a dynamic campaign generators and all sorts of weird and wonderful aircraft 4) The best VR compatibility of any game on the market 5) Constant free core updates plus loads of new aircraft, missions, and campaigns coming all the time; 6) And oh, by the way, the framerate just doubled this past weekend with multithreading. For free. Only in DCS can you use the real flight manuals as a truly useful guide in-game, or vice versa. Every switch, every obscure radar mode, every rivet is lovingly modeled. And its trump card over the likes of BMS is that it just doesn’t do this for one aircraft- it does it for nearly every major American and Russian postwar fighter, with more being added all the time (plus helicopters, plus civilian aircraft), and even more available via mods. Are there bugs on page 57 of the MFD when you’re in an inverted flat spin in a rainstorm at that one spot in the map if you press the fire button and open the airbrake at the same time? Aboslutely? Does the AI eagerly find a taxiway full of aircraft to land on at regular intervals? No doubt. Does it make an RTX 4090 look like a PS1 struggling to put frames on the screen sometimes? Sure. But find me another game where I can race over the treetops at Mach 2 in my F-14 in the rain, at night, in virtual reality, trying desperately to avoid that SA-6 as I attempt to reach my target airfield and obliterate it with GBU-12s, sputtering back to the carrier on my last 300 lb of fuel as my HUD winks out due to my engine fire. It is my contention that anyone who does not consider DCS to be the definitive postwar combat aviation sim either hasn’t played it, or is wrong. I’m going to for the most part recede back into the background here, but keep developing this amazing sim to the standards you’ve held up so successfully over the years, and I’ll keep supporting it and buying pretty much every module that you release. So thanks, ED. You’ve spoiled me. I don’t want to play anything else anymore, because I know I could be playing DCS instead.

  3. It really shouldn't, because it was a reality of the Tomcat. We will do it in the end as a service to you guys and out of good will. What if someone doesn't like where the RWR is placed, or how it looks, or whatever example you want to think of. Could make that a special option, too, and "no one loses anything in that way"... This is not something arbitrary, but part of the jet's history, whether you like it or not. Please be patient until we finalized forge, and then you will be able to put together your very own jet, to your very own preferences, unlike a real Tomcat pilot, who could not do that. For four years we got asked "Forge when?" - now that it is finally here with its first elements, some already want it turned off... What was and what wasn't in the jet, generally is not part of a personal wishlist, or something we make up out of thin air. Grumman did not design the jet, the placement of buttons and the workarounds needed for parts of the jet, with the personal preferences of simmers 50 years later in mind... It's not something any of us have a choice in. It is how the jet was, and that is what we are depicting as accurately as we can, whether one likes it or not.

I added some more weathering "eye candy" and corrected some copy / paste mistakes in the original weathering. This will be updated into the silver versions. 6. Maintenance issues and temporary fixes are arguably the meat and potatoes of realism. if we were going further, realistically you'd be rolling a dice every time you started the jet as to whether or not you'd have a 100% capable aircraft, even then you could brick the radar on launch, or have a system go INOP in flight. as to your points: 1) its random what fix will be mounted if anything, I'm sure that if its that disheartening for you, a well worded letter to HB might result in a refund if you surrender the product although, you are receiving the product you purchased. 2) liveries are the bulk of the file size, as people have already previously said it'd be somewhat prohibitive to include every livery ever. that said if you have the storage the files page on the website will have a multitude of liveries for you to download.

  7. The dynamic cockpit offered by Forge is a promised feature for the product you purchased years ago. Many have been waiting for this, and most are amused and having a good time with it. The option to turn it off will be made available. Because for starters, not every livery has the depth of available documentation for more line aircraft with the associated names for canopy rails, maintainers underneath, and various minor adjustments across the airframe- which would set the rivet counter set off given their lack of realism. These factors exist in a three way fight with the font, kerning, and angle adjustments across the fleet that do not easily permit the institution of dynamic modex. And then there's this sort: It's interesting, the number of factors being held in a constant state of tension, all among people who claim to want "realism", but not necessarily deal with the costs of such. Some days you fly the jet that needs a panel replaced but the COD can't bring one out. Most days you fly the jet that doesn't have your name on it. Sometimes realism needs to be countered with the lack of specific visual information, and others it needs to wait for an outsider to make a skin and purchase a new hard drive to carry the load.

  8. There is a new update. I added a download link for the dll only. It's the only component required to update between DCS updates. To solve this, ED would have to send me their new dlls prior to releasing an update and add A-29B to the DCS update scheme, or add me as a 3rd party dev and distribute A-29B freely with DCS.

  13. I think this whole thing probably needs some time to sink in for many people. I think most grew up with the notion of US military aircraft being these high-techy, pristine, clean affairs with lots of shiny, blinking lights and cool displays (thanks in part to US military glossy PR material enforcing this belief). When in reality, the harsh conditions on a Carrier on deployment, with spare parts being a rare commodity, those Tomcats resembled more Han and Chewy patching up the Millennium Falcon. Give it time, people will get used to it once the realism of it all sinks in. In my opinion.

  14. Hi all, just a quick post highlighting some missing ordinance that the Sabre historically was equipped with as per manuals for the F-86-E series and F-86-F35 (the Sabre we have in game). As per the manual for the F-86-F-35 and F-86-E-1 shown above, the Sabre should have access to the M65A1 bomb with the T142 fin assembly on pylons 4 and 7, currently in-game the Sabre has access to the M-64A1 general purpose bomb and M177 "Demolition" bomb on these pylons. F-86-F-35 documentation F-86-E-1 documentation Currently in game the only M65A1 that is in game I believe is part of the WW2 assets or is a droppable ordinance from the AI B-52/B-17 You can see what I'm assuming to be the 1000lb bomb above, used in this video by the Grim Reapers showcasing the AI B-17 below https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PKKNpg2olFM The M-65A1 W/T142 fin can be seen here in this manual of ordinance (OP-1280 Aircraft bombs) Thanks in advance for adding this ordinance option as I was surprised to learn it wasn't already in the sim. 16. 1. I don't like these silly wires at all. I think it ruins the look of the product I purchased years ago. 2. If realism is so important, why don't we get more liveries with more numbers? (more than 4 per squadron) I see a bit of a double standard here. The problem with the numbers remains unadressed since release. Takes a couple seconds to duplicate, increment number, save. That's just lazy.

4. удалите mt.lua mt.lua

  19. I have added two new liveries to the disk space version at the bottom. This only increases the disk space by 5MB, to 442MB total for 8 liveries. They are of a generic RAF scheme, but with the red bort numbers of the night fighting squadrons. While we don't have the appropriate Mosquito for such, I hope it at least opens the possibility to get as close to them as possible. Here is the LINK, again. Cheers!

  22. The decision of what we model, or not, is not up to whether you like it or not. We could just as easily decide not to make it selectable. It's a bonus courtesy that we do so, in light of a bigger picture at the end of FORGE, and we will not waste time on stop-gap measures in the meantime, just because you disapprove of something, which simply was as is depicted. Same goes for the weathered cockpit, etc. This is how it was, and, sorry if you disapprove, but you will have to live with it. I heard you the first time, you do not like it, and some others don't either. But again, the Tomcat's history and its accurate depiction is not part of a personal wishlist of any of us and does not care about our personal preferences. You may dislike it, you may tell us so repeatedly, but that does not change that it in fact was like that in the jet and that we decided to depict it as such. Thank you for your kind understanding.

  23. Hello fighters! We're excited to introduce what you've been asking about: Airfield Lighting Systems. Lights . . . . . . . . . . . . . ON Unexpectedly, many airfields were equipped with permanent lighting systems. The Allies and the Wehrmacht ensured round-the-clock operation of airfields and already in those years, lights hidden in the ground were created - the ancestors of airfield lights that we can see now in airports. Depending on the situation, you can choose the mode when the lights are on or off. P.S.: We congratulate the ED team on the introduction of multithreading in DCS World. The entire DCS community benefits from this: for users, this is an increase performance, for developers, this is pushing the boundaries of development possibilities. 24. It would prolly be a good idea to make new presets w/ MT anyway, But the Binaries will only be separate for so long, The new version of the App may be ready by the end of March, but it really depends on circumstances beyond my control (and EDs for that matter). Myself and the other testers have been abusing the new functions, some are still WIP, others are being cleaned and condensed.

  27. Hi all. I'm experiencing something puzzling that most other people I know aren't. Multithreaded exe looks a lot worse for me with same graphics settings. No antialiasing seem to be applied with lots of jaggies, and textures look a lot more low res, especially in the distance. Effects such as raindrop on canopy look pixelated. Changing settings/restarting didn't seem to help. Things look as good as they always did if I go back to non-MT exe.

  28. I noticed that using the litening targeting pod in moving target mode in track mode, it's possible now since the last update to control the maverick seaker with the tdc. That means now it's possible to assign several target without losing the track, which is great improvment After moving the cross over the target, which appears if TGP is SOI pressing TDC down, you have to make the Maverick SOI, then it will acquire the target lock... I haven't seen this feature somewhere else, so I made a short video...

  31. Hi everyone, it's great to see here that other Linux users are interested in DCS World on Linux, too! A few more statistics I found last weekend and found quite interesting: https://www.statista.com/statistics/218089/global-market-share-of-windows-7/ * Windows desktop users declined from 90.96% to 74.14% in the last 10 years * At the same time MacOS grew from 7.95% to 15.33%. And peaked in April 2020 at 18.99%. * From April 2020 (so when MacOS lost some shares again) to today Linux desktop users grew from 1.61% to 2.91%. And this statistic for how many people use which OS for software development: https://www.statista.com/statistics/869211/worldwide-software-development-operating-system/ * Windows: 61%, MacOS: 46%, Linux: 45% Which might be an explanation for why the amount of Linux users potentially interested in DCS World might be higher than the 1.27% Linux users on Steam. At least Linux users and especially developers are used to reading manual pages and maybe like the challenge to dive into technicalities of a system. (hi @okopanja, I'm a software developer working on/from Linux, too :D). And from a marketing perspective, software developers could be an interesting target as they get payed very well and can and might still be open to pay the extra price for DCS World compared to other games. --- Anyway, back to topic: I would love to see an OpenGL / Vulkan port of DCS World, too, with native Linux support. However it seems that this actually not needed anymore to play DCS on Linux, there seems to have been great progress with Wine and Proton: * https://github.com/TheZoq2/dcs_on_linux * https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/1722 15 years ago I had played LockOn and this year I checked back and I was very pleasantly surprised on how easy it was to install and use DCS World via Lutris. Looks like I came back right on time. And I get very decent frame rates with medium settings on this new laptop with its integrated GPU (a Thinkpad T14s with an AMD/ATI 680M). In fact, we can already play with Vulkan thanks to the crazy DXVK project (which gives me about ~10% more frames, from 21-25% -> 24-27% on the Caucasus map and with the new multithreading in Open Beta I even get about 26%-32%). Only remaining issues seem to be radar texture issue with the F-16 (for which there is a workaround), texture issues with the Marianas map and maybe VR support.

  33. It's difficult because missile failure rates were highly variable, they typically worked better in Nevada than they did in Vietnam, and I suspect during exercises in Europe they also didn't fail nearly as much. Missile failures would be nice but that would have to be done right. Honestly, given the complexity and limited information, I expect they'll miss plenty of time. Most of the early missiles' bad reputation stems from out of parameters launches, which was easy, since those parameters were fairly strict.

Like many users on here no FPS improvement as GPU bound but still getting 45fps on the ground and 55 in the air. Worst 40fps on the ground in the Apache Mariannas Dawn Invasion quick start which seems a good stress test. Still very happy with the performance despite no gain with MT.

  37. I think the main thing as loyal customers is to be honest and at least balance out the occasionally deserved bitching and whining we do when things aren't perfect, with appreciation and acknowledgement of things very well done, and even surpassing expectations. Like this latest update. This remains the best flightsim ever.

  38. Hear, hear! What ED has done is absolutely stunning! I know this is a gross oversimplification, but it almost feels as if they've recreated a whole industry: Would we have the peripheral hardware options of Virpil, VKB, WinWing, etc., without DCS? They single-handedly saved the military flight sim genre...and then made it spectacular. I've always said and thought that ED bit off WAY more than they can chew with DCS World... so glad they took that bite!

  41. Very quickly into its service, indeed, and the weathered cockpit as is would have looked like that a couple weeks in, on the boat. This has been confirmed numerous times by maintainers, by Dave "BIO" Baranek, pilot SMEs and others who worked on and in the jet. You can hear it from the man himself in this video on the timestamp (20:30). BIO btw was a real Top Gun instructor, and was also part of the Top Gun movie.

  42. Even more so, you will be abel to tie it to a livery even for as long as you wish. However in service these things would change in the same jet, too. Wire might have gotten lose over a mission, replaced with the metal plate, or tape, etc... It was not really like "this jet will only get wire for the duration of red flag" or similar.
    2 points
  43. How it is implemented right now, it doesn't work well with "Speed and Angels", and I imagine other missions that, for example, use multiple maps. Due to the structure of this campaign, every set is being loaded individually, which coupled with the randomness of FORGE, the player finds himself in a different cockpit despite being in the same jet (for example, "203"), every time a new set loads. Which is weird and does not really help with immersion. I hope in the future there will be the possibility to "assign" certain FORGE elements to a specific airframe for the duration of, say, a campaign. Otherwise, it's a great idea to have the ability to reflect the reality of such patch jobs and the fact that no two Tomcats were ever quite the same.
    2 points
  44. No, not until we are done with forge. And it is not "weird stuff", it is a part of the Tomcat's operational reality. Once we are done, you will be able to put together "your jet", according to your own preferences.
