As promised I am going to conclude this thread with my post about Авиабаза 1521, Мары-1 - Центр боевого применения | Airbase 1521, Mary-1 - Combat Operations Center which was based in Mary-1. This airbase is included in the general Afghanistan map area and would be a huge asset and incentive for the map's additional support by the community if it would be modelled. 1521st unit based at the Mary-1 was the Soviet analogue of the U.S.A. Top Gun/ Aggressors! It was a special base for training front line fighters in various ways on top of the training they were getting in their own airbases. (Training program code name "Operation Kavkaz" or "Exercise 500") This training program for dogfighting and other combat flying, was not done in one day. It lasted several weeks or even a month. This program would have been impossible without rivals that were the visiting units. Thus, the majority of units of the USSR fighters visited the Mary-1 for training. Mary-1 “aggressors” were flying the following aircraft: In the early 70s MiG-21PFM, SM, UM and in 1974 - MiG21Bis. Since the fall of 1975, the 2nd squadron on the MiG23M/UB (non-woven blue with white edging, camouflage since 1979) MiG-23MLD was flown since 1984, The MiG-29 9.12 was adopted from 1989 for the 1st squadron and from 1991 for the 2nd squadron. To make the resident instructor squadrons stand out during the exercises, some quick identification elements - “cognac stripes, shark mouths, Vikings and Hornet logos” were adopted since 1987. After 1992 and the dissolution of the Soviet Union the airbase was disbanded, some of the jets were returned to Russia and some stayed as part of the Turkmenistan Air Force. This is why Currenthill deserves so much credit. And let's face it - these 3D models aren't cheap, and all the programming and texturing work takes time. We value you as a generous contributor to the DCS community, and speaking of which, I'm going to donate to https://ko-fi.com/currenthill.5 points

Hi all, +++ updated 02.09.2024 +++ I uploaded my Kola Sandbox, a set of 55 slot based quick missions for 12 different aircraft This sandbox is intended to give the players a set of 55 quick missions on the Kola map, to offer single- or multicrew players some quick fun. In total there are 55 missions/slots available for Royal Norwegian Air Force, Swedish Air Force, Finnish Air Force, US Air Force, US Marine Corps and Russian Air Force. These include: Norway 7x F-16 3x F-5 (full fidelity AND FC4) Sweden 5x Viggen Finland 7x F/A-18 3x MiG-21 USA 5x F-15E 3x AV-8B 5x F-4E 5x A-10CII Russia 3x MiG-21 3x MiG-29 3x Su-33 3x Su-25A You will use air bases, road bases and carriers. You will intercept bombers, mingle with fighters, perform SEAD, conduct precision strikes with guided munitions, provide CAS with rockets, gunpods and dumb bombs and many more. What is this sandbox? It is intended to be an easily accessible set of quick missions for players of all skill levels. It offers a variety of F10 radio options to adapt the difficulty, like adding additional SHORAD or numbing down S-300s. Each of the slots has a unique task assigned. To provide a care free experience, the fligtplan is set, all neccessery radio frequencies are set, loadout is selected, tankers are available. But of course you can always adapt all this to your personal liking. The sandbox is also intended to be the user's personal Kola playing ground. You are a Hornet flyer and want to attack the target of Viper #4? Just grab it. You want to fly the JF-17 instead of the F-16? Just swap it. Users can also add new aircraft slots, like super carrier with Tomcats to their liking. The manual provides all neccessary frequencies and a list of target coordinates for maximum variety. Some highlights: + two versions of the mission - one with all aircraft (except for the Kuznetzov slots) set to cold start and one with all aircraft set to hot start. + Mission overview PDF with all relevant data + 18 page PDF manual + Enemy air assets that are slaved to a specific slot can be unlocked for any (added) aircraft via F10 options + various F10 options to set Red SAM behaviour While this set is intended for the single player, it should work well when used as multiplayer as well. Enjoy! https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/3339556/4 points

I've played DCS since P47 was introduced. Came from Il2 and WT and instantly enjoyed the flight model. Now I own all WW2 modules. i used to play for long stretches of time without getting burned out but now im done, and not as in burned out, just done with DCS. It's the same old stuff, same people on the same server fighting at grass level on the same spot on the map even though it got bigger. it's so stale that i've flown with 4 squadrons already, the first 3 used to fly il2 when i joined and where in transition to DCS, everytime we lost people because it was too expensive for some, some didn't have a good enough system to run it. Then it just gotten stale and boring and people slowly stopped showing up. My current squadron is switching back to il2 to get some people back and it's a squadron with 25 years of history and had 200 plus players at one point. When we started playing DCS we used to have 20 plus pilots at the time and server admin's squadron would always fly their 109s to england to bust our balls, the good old days of Storm of War. What frustrates me the most is ED's inactivity. I know there are like 10 or less guys working on ww2 but still, you either do something well or you don't do it at all. How about instead of PTO they finished developing WTO, added a couple period accurate birds. I16 has been in for a while and now LA7 is coming but they havent started working on ETO (not that i want them to focus on that), no, they gotta do PTO because "Nick loves the hellcat". How about they fixed AA ai so it's not copy pasted from modern SAMs and wouldn't see you through clouds anymore. I know that they can't do much and they need 3rd party to make stuff but at this point is it worth it? Just move those 2 dudes working on ww2 to modern and forget ww2 existed. How quickly will people get bored of F4U only fighting against AI zero? You will be able to do the same thing on a badget and fight against 109 in a LA7 on Caucasus map. Give it 3 more years and a half baked hellcat will come and people will gobble it up. ED will waste time making a couple of campaigns for these new shiny toys which people will play for a week and forget about. Then players will go back to Normandy and it's gonna be the same old stuff. And after all that what are we going to have? One very encomplete theatre which people played so much they can't stand it anymore + One very barebones theatre with 2 birds on one side. Yes it has gotten better throughout the years but nothing major. The only ww2 specific thing they added was fuses on bombs. They fixed a couple of issues on anton, changed some gun sounds and started adding suspension. In 4 years they managed to make the Mossie, thats it. You can argue spotting was also ww2 centered since it's much more important in ww2 then modern and after all this time it's still borked, still too easy to spot, still white dots on clouds. Just thinking about ww2 DCS makes me wanna vomit and the fact that ED doesn't care about it make me wanna cry because i same as most of us have invested a gigantic ammount of money (compared to an avergage gamer boi) into something that ED barelly payes attention to. New update comes out: Sees biblical ammounts of fixes and new features for every modern jet, scrolls down, ::insert Ken Jeong looking at a tiny pice of paper meme:: ww2 - "adjusted gunsight brightness on the spit" or "adjusted weather in campaign" Ima check on DCS ww2 in 5 years, maybe4 points

10 May 2024 Dear Fighter Pilots, Partners and Friends, We are delighted to share that the DCS: F-4E Phantom II by Heatblur Simulations is slated for early access release on the 21st of May at 15:00 GMT, 2024. If you have not already seen it, don’t miss the F-4E release announcement video, you will be impressed! Hurry, time is running short to secure your -25% discount by pre-ordering now. The DCS: F-16C Viper and DCS: F/A-18C pilot models are progressing well and the 3D modelling of the suits, helmets, and equipment are being finalised. Additionally, we are implementing a large set of realistic and immersive body animations. Read the details below. Get ready for the DCS: F/A-18C Operation Green Line Campaign by Badger633. This is a fictional campaign that continues the "Rise of the Persian Lion II" campaign about the adventures of 'Ford' and 'Matrix' aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln. You can look forward to this campaign in the next DCS update! Thank you for your passion and support. Yours sincerely, Eagle Dynamics F-4E Phantom II Last chance to save 25% The much anticipated launch of the Phantom II is just around the corner. Renowned for its capabilities as a highly effective and versatile fighter-bomber, this iconic jet excels in both air-to-air combat and ground attack missions using a wide array of munitions. With Heatblur’s dedication to ultra-realistic simulation, you can expect meticulous attention to detail from cockpit graphics to the flight model. More details will be unveiled soon. This is your last chance to get the DCS: F-4E Phantom II with a -25% pre-purchase discount. 3D Pilot Models Development Report The upcoming pilot models for the DCS: F-16C Viper and DCS: F/A-18C are set to significantly enhance the realism and immersion of these aircraft. We are excited to bring these updates to you, and we look forward to your feedback. The primary objectives for the new pilot models are to: Enhance visual fidelity and realism in line with new graphical technologies. Improve animation fluidity for more lifelike pilot movements. Incorporate detailed flight suits and equipment specific to the aircraft, reflecting actual gear worn by F-16C and F/A-18C pilots in the mid-2000s Suit Modelling The flight suits are crafted with high-resolution textures to accurately replicate the fabric and material properties. Special attention has been paid to the reflectivity and roughness maps to ensure that the suits react realistically under various lighting conditions. Harness systems and life support equipment have been carefully modelled. For the F-16C pilot, the harness connects to the ejection seat precisely as it would in the real aircraft. The F/A-18C pilot features a survival vest equipped with pockets and gear appropriate for carrier operations. The helmets are modelled with operational visors that can move up and down, helmet mounted displays, and night vision goggles. Animations Subtle in-cockpit movements such as head-turning to check instruments, hand movements for throttle and stick operation, torso movements, and even eye movements are being refined to mimic real-life. We continue to work on making the pilot’s body respond to G-forces more realistically. We hope to include inflation of the G suit during high-G manoeuvres and subtle shifts in weight. Next Steps Once these new pilot models are integrated for the first and third person views for the DCS: F-16C Viper and the DCS: F/A-18C, we will implement a similar 3D pilot model to the DCS: A-10C II Tank Killer. Operation Green Line Campaign by Badger633 This immersive campaign features 12 unique missions that are interconnected through a continuous narrative across multiple Middle Eastern locations. Both carrier and land-based operations are included. Developed with virtual reality in mind, the campaign eliminates the need for jotting down transient coordinates, thereby maintaining immersion. Optional tanker refuelling is available, though careful fuel management can negate its necessity. The campaign includes over 1,700 voice-overs, a 'Speed Stop' feature to prevent missing content during time acceleration, and adjustable AI settings for the final four missions to suit different skill levels. Each mission comes with detailed briefings that are accessible in-game and as downloadable PDFs. Customised aircraft skins are included to enhance the personalisation of the gameplay experience. We hope you took advantage of the F-4E Phantom pre-purchase discount and that the preview of the upcoming F-16C Viper and F/A-18C pilots are to your satisfaction. Also, keep a lookout for Badger633's Operation Green Line campaign, coming in the next DCS update! Thank you again for your passion and support, Yours sincerely,3 points

Steam actively discourages pre-orders (pre-purchase) now. Very few games will have this option. So pre-orders are a thing of the past on Steam. What Steam wants is that the game is discounted on release for the first week(s). Which is what HB is doing. https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/store/prepurchase3 points

Forget the kid, obviously the maturity progress is still ongoing. In any case; here is a map of Kola, showing just the extent of the barren plains known as tundra. Below, are photos showing what it looks like. While Orbx will need to work on the color of the ground textures (especially in fall/spring), as well as introducing rocks and the likes, it will still remain for a much part barren: (Those cliffs are along the northern coast - Musta Tunturi region.)3 points

What's going on in this subject at all? The problem is not solved, you can still see a large square that breaks the immersion, then when the LOD of the model is loaded, the object becomes smaller. Unfortunately it looks very bad still. Any news about improvements?2 points

I modified the DongFeng missile pack's g-forces to make each missile's ballistic arch reach a maximum altitude of between 200KFt. to 300KFt. depending on the specific ballistic missile. For the velocity of the RVs, I just used the abstracted values provided for each class of ballistic missile by the game "Command: Modern Operations" DB3K viewer. ≈4500 Kts for longer-ranged SRBMs, ≈6500 Kts for MRBMs, ≈10000 Kts for IRBMs, and =12000 Kts for ICBMs.2 points

Hi Holger, I wish that you would make available a “hires” version for those of us who don’t mind the space it would take. The map has great potential but currently let down ( as are all the DCS maps) by this lack of detail. I would also be happy to pay more for this. There are a significant number of users who have the storage space and computing power to run a more demanding version…….Or maybe consider splitting off the western area with the lakes and fjord cliffs as a sepately available hi res package? The other area that would benefit greatly from improvement is the transitions between texture variations…….. it really kills the effect when there is this terrible obvious demarcation line. Is it not possible to do a blend texture to avoid this?2 points

Mustang didn't need any period assets in 2012 to sell well, Sabre didn't need any either in 2015'ish to sell well. We don't really know how "ready" that carrier and Japanese tanks are (after all, Corsair external model was already "ready" once before they decided to start redoing it again). If the plane doesn't come with something extra at the same date, I'm buying it anyway 'cause it's just going to be the best simulated Corsair to date. DCS stopped being flight sim for combat-enthusiasts-only years ago. If it does, good, the more the better.2 points

I re installed IL2 today, have the same feeling as you about DCS WWII, simply as the wrong map for the airplane setup. A Germany map will solve the problem, also agree with you about PTO, makes no sense at all , instead of a Hellcat and Corsair , P38 or and an earlier 109 would have made a lot more sense to move in the right direction. Unfortunately I hate the Il2 arcade damage model, where you get killed with the very first bullet even when flying bombers. Some things I appreciate in IL2, VR cockpit limits, going thru clouds, is more realistic (rain and darkness)oil on windshield, turbulence, and wind up higher, not every flight is smooth as glass, pilot modelling is much better. DCS makes fantastic airplanes, its a shame about the rest, and definitely not attracting people, seems like they don't care at all.2 points

So as has been discussed ad nauseam here, there is a mode of the JDAM that is absent from the current modelling in DCS Viper called 'Absolute'. The purpose of this mode has not previously been apparent for hornet or viper as there has been no real benefit to it. However as you will have seen, recently the vipers INS/GPS simulation was upgraded dramatically. This now means that there is variation and tolerance within the INS system. You may observe this by slaving a TGP to the waypoint and watching how it wanders around. It is this very variation that is causing this increased inaccuracy that you are seeing. The JDAM is flying to where the jet thinks the coordinates of the target are, so the weapon will have as much tolerance in its aiming as the jet does. This is where Absolute mode would come into play, it would rely on the weapons own GPS to correct the targets location, correcting for the variation inherited from the jet. As we don't currently have Absolute mode, we are forced to resort to using an onboard sensor to refine the location of the target beyond what is possible with the INS/GPS. To summarise: FA-18: No absolute vs relative + no INS variation = good against coords or sensor designation F-15E: Good absolute vs relative + good INS variation= good against coords or sensor designation F-16: No absolute vs relative + good INS variation = good against sensor designation but poor against coordinates2 points

I would like to dispell a common misconception here. The FCR does not actually identify anything it detects. Rather it classifies it within 6 general categories, and has no ability to determine whether it is friendly, hostile, or civilian. This is an important distinction and it is just as important to understand what the FCR does not do as it is to understand what it does do. The FCR chapter in the DCS AH-64D Early Access Guide is your best resource to understand how this classification works in the game. But also keep in mind that the FCR's classification is not perfect; the symbol may not actually reflect what the target is. Fortunately, the LINK mode will help with this soon. But in general, the FCR can be very useful in determining which areas of the battlefield you need to observe with the TADS first. If I see an air defense vehicle symbol, it doesn't necessarily mean it is an air defense unit, but that will certainly be the first target I slave my TADS toward to identify. Just don't let the FCR lull you into a false sense of certainty of what is or isn't out there.2 points

FCR Basics: FCR Introduction FCR Pages and Controls NOTE. As always, these videos provide a preview of an upcoming feature to assist you in understanding a new feature. Later, it is quite possible that the feature will change, and the feature functionality has changed. As much as I’d like to, I lack the time re-record these videos. In this DCS: AH-64D video, we’ll discuss use of the Fire Control Radar, or FCR, Zoom and C-Scope functions. The Zoom function will allow you to expand a small area of the FCR display to distinguish targets in proximity and more easily to engage them. The C-Scope function allows you to display FCR symbols over the HMD and the TADS. These functions are crew station independent, meaning, use in one station will not affect the FCR display of the other station. To use Zoom, the station that wishes to use it must have the FCR selected as the Sight. For a more detailed accounting of the FCR, I’ve listed links to previous videos on the topic. First, let’s scan ahead and detect some targets on the FCR. We can use Zoom in one of two ways: First, by pressing the Zoom button on the TEDAC right handgrip, the FCR will switch to a 6:1 format around the Next to Shoot, or NTS, target. Pressing the button again will return the FCR to the normal format. This is a fast way to zoom in on your NTS. Second, with an NTS, selecting ZOOM from R1 displays a 6:1 white box with an X through it on the FCR is displayed that indicates the footprint of the Zoomed area. Using the display cursor, we can slew the Zoom box anywhere on the FCR display to determine where we wish to zoom into. With the press and release of the cursor enter switch, the FCR will display just the area covered by the Zoom box. You can then use the NTS cycle function and the cursor designation to set an NTS from the zoomed-in display. In both circumstances, if you command a scan burst, the ZOOM format will automatically exit and then return to the Zoom format once the scan burst is completed. Now let’s look at C-Scope. C-Scope is very simple to use, in that it is just turned on or off. However, the capability that C-Scope brings to the crew’s collective situational awareness cannot be over-stated. To enable C-Scope, we’ll bring up the FCR page, and we’ll press button T1 to box the C SCP option, which indicates it is enabled. As we look around with the HMD, we can now see all the symbols that are displayed on the FCR page. These symbols include FCR target symbols, the FCR Next-To-Shoot diamond, the FCR Alternate-Next-To-Shoot triangle, and any recorded missile engagements as X-shaped symbols. C-Scope symbols are displayed in the same manner as the Navigation Fly-To Cue and are displayed virtually over their real-world locations as seen through the HMD. This allows either crewmember to maintain situational awareness of the battlefield as they look outside the cockpit. C-Scope can be enabled in either crew station independently of the other, allowing the Pilot and CPG to determine whether they want C-Scope symbols to be displayed within their respective symbologies. Now let’s hop into the CPG seat and see what it looks like when using the TADS. Ok, now that we’re in the front seat, let’s turn on C-Scope up here. Like before, we bring up the FCR page and press C SCP to enable it. Now, not only will the C-Scope symbols be displayed within my HMD, but if I sight-select TADS by pressing the Sight Select switch to the right, on the right TEDAC grip, the symbols will also be overlaid within my TADS sensor video. This will allow the CPG to rapidly acquire targets on the battlefield which have already been detected by the FCR, which can now be visually identified using TADS optical sensors. C-Scope isn’t just a valuable tool for an FCR-equipped AH-64; it can also be used in AH-64’s that are not equipped with an FCR but have received FCR target data through the datalink. Even if the FCR is not installed, you can still enable C-Scope on the FCR page by pressing C SCP at button T1. As you can see, C-Scope is simple to use, but it is a very powerful feature that can drastically improve the situational awareness of the entire flight, provided at least one AH-64 is equipped with an FCR.2 points

Unfortunately, this affects other maps and causes some defects related to tree building (however on Kola its hardly visible). At the moment, unfortunately, due to poorly made vegetation, it is near impossible to fly low over Kola without this (this applies especially to VR but also to people with weaker PC in 2D or very high resolution over 4K) and it requires optimization work. This is a temporary solution and I hope they will improve it, not like with SA maps...2 points

To clear this up a bit, having been living in Northern-Norway most of my life, Im glad to say that the shape of the mountains in the Kola map is spot on regarding their shape, so good in fact that it is possible to recognise places from the shape of the mountains alone. Textures can of course improve, but will wait and see how things develop.2 points

Two squadrons of Su-17M2 Fitter-D bombers were placed near the Iranian borders. 806th Fighter Bomber Air Regiment at Kzyl-Arvat airport from 14th Air Army and 168th Guard Fighter Bomber Air Regiment at Mary-2 airport from 34th Tactical Air Army. Both squadrons had 1st Class pilots. These squadrons were suitable for nuclear offensive missions. These two squadrons were stationed there in order to keep the Iranian forces at bay. The Mary-2 airfield played a significant role in supporting the Soviet troops in Afghanistan and the Afghan army. The main volume of military cargo went there through the Tashkent-Vostochny airport (Tuzel) to the airfields of Mary, Kokaity, Karshi and Ferghana. When necessary, routine maintenance could also be carried out. Mi-8, Mi-24 helicopters, UTI-MiG-15, and Il-28 bombers were mainly sent from factories or other bases.2 points
