DCS World 2.0 and New Maps Discussion Thread

I'm almost up and ready for new and shiny DCS. TM Warthog is on the way and TrackIR also. Being software developer I understand all issues that those guys have to overcome. In this superficial world I can imagine that is really hard to keep flight sim market alive. They will always have my support. Just keep it up! ...and for update of the core feature such is graphics engine few months delay is really understandable.

Very nice work!

Just one little note: imho, trees's palettes colors feel too "tropical" (same thing for DCS WWII terrain).

Will the current DCS map work on the Edge engine with all of the other performance and graphical improvements?

No

Is multicore support being implemented? While SLI/Crossfire is nice, flight sims are more based on the CPU so I feel multicore support is more important. Additionally, everyone has at least a dual core and probably a quad core now. Not nearly as many have multi GPUs, and do not want to deal with the extra price/noise/heat/driver issues associated with them.

Pre wags; "Can support up to four GPU (either SLI or CF)."

Will the Nevada map and other future maps cost us? I am fine with buying aircraft, but I think buying maps, AI units, ect. will break up the community and make it hard to get enough people to populate a server.

It's been said that those that purchased DCS A-10C during the beta period will receive the map for free, but remember everything is subject to change. As to future maps my guess would be you will have to purchase. They can't develop them for free so why wouldn't you have to pay?

I don't think it will be hard to populate a server, I think you're greatly underestimating the communities desire to fly places other than Georgia.

Please remember this is also in the Land Viewer, not in DCS yet. So like Modelviewer, results may look different in-game.

So when the Edge update is released will be still be able to play the non-Edge map? Or will we have to buy the new Nevada terrian to continue getting updates?

I also asked about CPU (Central Processing Unit; Intel/AMD) multicore support, not GPU (Graphics Processing Unit; Nvidia/AMD). I would hope Edge does eventually as there is plenty of untapped hardware power that DCS does not take advantage of. Multi GPUs are nice, but not many have more than one card and I doubt it will help much with AI/flight physics.

I too want a map to play outside of the current area, but I will not like buying a bunch of terrains, or buying certain AI units, or buying new clouds ect. I am perfectly fine with purchasable flyable aircraft, but having to buy base content (maps/terrian) invalidates a large reason behind the DCS World model (unified, compatible base).

If it means we will get more terrains and support ED and thirds parties to make more content I'm happy to pay for it.

I mean that trees's green look too glossy for Nevada location (also for Normady).

Imho.

If they are 4 months away from beta testing the NEVADA map I guess there must be quite a few things not done. How can you criticize something that is not released?

Has ED made any promises/estimates/guesstimates if the new GE will in average actually increase FPS, keep them about the same or decrease somewhat (for the new eye candy)? New sim engines tend to increase eye candy but usually have zero or negative effect on FPS...

I understand his reasoning: with flyable aircraft, it does not break compatibility because those who do not own the aircraft can still play with those who do (this is true with ED aircraft, and 3rd parties so far - it is yet to see how this will work with other 3rd party aircraft). But for maps, it will break compatibility. It kinda spoils the point of DCS World, although personally I don't think it will be a problem. Also, I don't expect all the hard work they did to come free of charge.

I'm hoping for EDGE to bring a few new terrains besides Nevada. Probably not too many, as it is not easy to make one, but a handful, and I for one will gladly pay to finally fly in some new areas.

I suspect they will have estimates only when the engine is integrated into DCS

It is understandable, making new engine is power hungry process. But I may point even if some people are angry, they shouldn't be. It is up to ED's own sake to delivery it as soon as possible. As any business company it wants money too. The slower pace of progress, the worse prognosis for the future, costs grow as well.

no, not really... its more up to, and beneficial, for the developers to get it right before delivery. There's been too much "hurry up and get it out the door (fix it in post')" from other developers of other genres.

Until we start seeing in game videos I would hold off on any negative comments pertaining to color and lighting. It's almost like the important fact that this video was generated inside the editor is being dismissed.

Seeing the latest vid...

I appreciate the news on time scale. After a disastrous few weeks with my PC I was awaiting news on whether to reinstall DCS as is or wait for EDGE..i was gonna wait, but not now.

Regarding the vid... I was a bit underwhelmed by it, visually it does not look like much of an improvement over what we have, hopefully this is just because it is not fully rendered in the game engine.

My expectations have been considerably lowered.

If you would expected crytek looks like yes, you'll be disappointed. Therefore the most important think of EDGE is the DX11 which makes it have by far more details at the same frame rate as we are having now.

Wags, just take dev team to a beer and explain them again the Santa Claus fairytale. We, players, do believe (still) in Santa and looking for some goods under the tree.
