Is ED letting down their VR customers?? Yes I'm venting!
Lurker replied to RackMonkey's topic in Virtual Reality
Well I managed to get my system sorted. Creating a 21H1 bootable USB did the trick. Now to see if a fresh install of DCS World, in addition to WMR, WMR for Steam and SteamVR will provide me with acceptable performance with the G2 in VR. -

Yep, downloading and creating a bootable USB right now -
Yeah, the famous LODs. I would agree with you here except how close is the highest detail LOD in DCS? How far do you have to be, and for how long before you notice every single rivet on that command hatch, or the flat screws on that swashplate on that helo that you're lining up in your sights? 50 meters? 10 meters? How far do the highest detail LODs spawn in and how optimized are they? These are mostly rhetorical questions, as I think we are all well aware of the answers.

These exceptions are quickly becoming the norm. The HIND is the most taxing module so far. What do you want to bet that the Apache is going to be even more demanding? I prefer flying the modules instead of looking at them, and while I appreciate the detail what I appreciate by far more is immersion, and while a pretty model and a pretty cockpit with millions of polygons is great on the tarmac, once I'm the air if I can't push the 45 min required FPS for my headset then I couldn't care less how pretty it all looks as the stutter has completely ruined my immersion and now I don't want to fly anymore.

Like I said, the SSD showed no such problems before I decided to do a clean reinstall. Likewise, the "fresh" install worked perfectly, for all of about 2 minutes (before it started to download the 20H2 version). I've read a few very similar accounts online where Windows update caused serious and very similar issues. The reason I went for the clean reinstall is because i recently got a new VR headset and had issues with SteamVR crashing and previously I muddled too much with some of my registry settings and in general the OS install was getting kinda bloated. I just wanted a fresh go to eliminate all possible issues. @BitMaster yeah, I think that's what I'll end up doing. Use the Windows Media Creation Tool to create the latest bootable USB like Lucshep suggested, do a complete partition deletion reformat and then take it from there with the chipset drivers etc.

If only more time was spent on better textures in maps than on every single rivet on the latest and newest module. How many of us actually look at exterior models? I wouldn't mind all that detail if there was some way I could turn it down and gain performance, but since this is impossible I humbly request Eagle Dynamics (and all the other third parties) to tone down the polygons and triangles for their next release so that the game doesn't run like dog s$%$ and maybe focus more on the scenery instead.

EFB for VR users - Improve the VR user experience
Lurker replied to Jonny's topic in DCS Core Wish List
Sounds like it could be extremely expensive to produce, and very demanding on our PCs. Maybe some day... -
Oh crap. I hope it's not a corrupt SSD. It's a fairly robust NVMe M2 drive that's less than two years old. In any case it behaved fine for the short interim duration until it downloaded the 20h2 version. It's either the 20h2 version, or maybe some kind of partition failure (they looked kind of weird on setup, and on second thought I didn't delete all of them as I should have done.) I will try and run the Media Creation Tool and go from there. Do I need to install chipset drivers, or will the latest version of Windows take care of that for me if I go down that route? One other question, is there a diagnostic tool I can use to check the SSD for errors, just in case?

In my fumbling way to get the G2 working properly with my RIG. I did the following things: Reseated my CPU, applied new thermal paste. Deleted options.lua, removed all traces of Oculus Software Installed WMR for Windows, WMR for Steam, SteamVR Followed Speed of Heat's guide Experienced major crashes, strange glitching and performance bugs. (Probably due to previous user error when attempting to streamline my OS) Installed a new CPU Watercooling solution. Rechecked that everything was properly ship-shape from a hardware point of view. Lastly I tried to reinstall Windows, which I did, however Windows update decided to automatically download 20H2 and this completely destroyed my performance on my PC to the point where it now boots up for 45 seconds and even file explorer lags. This where I am now. "Clean" (lol) Windows install, which feels like it's broken. No DCS World installed. I have a 3000+ Euro PC which is basically a huge dust collector at this point. Do I blame Eagle Dynamics for this? No, i do not. Absolutely not. If there is blame to be assigned it's probably equally shared between Microsoft and myself. Do I wish I had never heard of Eagle Dynamics and DCS World at this point? Yes. Yes I do. -
I consider myself fairly computer literate. I've always built my PCs from scratch. As far back as I can remember. I've done countless OS installations over the years. I even work in IT. I never thought I was going to say these words.... But I need help with my Windows OS install. I recently decided to format my C:\ drive and reinstall Windows, I've had trouble setting up my Reverb G2 and I messed around with the Windows registry too much so I wanted a fresh clean start. I have an original Windows Home 64 bit installation USB and a legit key. (Not bought through resellers) After the installation which went fine, i decided to check for updates and download all of them, or all the non-optional ones in any case. For some reason my OS decided that it was a good idea to download the Windows 20h2 build. Didn't even ask me for confirmation. First of all this took nearly 5 hours. Okay, I let it do its thing. It was almost impossible to use my PC during this time so I left it alone. After the update finished (this morning) I checked and it had to download a few more patches. However my PC feels sluggish and slow, everything takes a second or more to open. By Boot up time is around 35-45 seconds. (I timed it a few times) This is on an SSD NVME m2 Drive.....Even without Fast Book enabled my PC had no trouble getting up in about 10 seconds flat previously. So far the only drivers (other than the ones Windows automatically installed) I downloaded and installed so far are my graphics drivers. I have installed NO other software other than Google Chrome, which is again, slow as F$%&. So my question to everyone is: Is this normal? Are Windows 20h2 supposed to be that slow? I'm loath to download 150GB of DCS World only to discover that I have to re-install my entire OS from scratch. Again. So please, I need help, what do I do, and how do I get back my performance (if indeed it is lost at all) Thanks in advance. My system: i5-9600k (currently not overclocked) (freshly reseated, new thermal pase, new watercooler Be Quiet Silent Loop 2) MSI Gigabyte Gaming X 390Z motherboard 2x16 GB DDR4 RAM, 3200 SMP profile 1 TB Nvme\M2 SSD (Formated, fresh Windows install) 2 TB WD Harddisk

This is an old interview, from way back before the merger with Heatblur so I would take anything said there as very "everything is subject to change". Don't expect anything other than what is officially announced and you won't ever be disappointed.

If the Hind EA release is anything to go by, then at least a couple of training missions should be available at release. Probably just the basic stuff, like start-up, taxi, take-off and landing. *disclaimer* this is just an educated guess.

Official transport aviation module in DCS World!
Lurker replied to ThorBrasil's topic in DCS Core Wish List
Why not the mighty Antonov-32? Twin engine, so no problems there: -
Okay thanks, it could very well be something like that as I did turn it off (and it somehow started up again a few weeks ago) so that could be part of it. Sorry to clutter up your thread like, I will stop posting here if you like.
-
You think Windows update could be to blame? Interesting, sounds a bit far fetched but I'll take anything at this point I did defer it a couple of times and previously I tried to turn it off entirely. As an aside is there any way to force WMR to update, or is done through the cliff house? If I can't get it sorted I will probably do a complete clean reinstall of Windows, Steam and DCS World.
-
It's not happening. I think PilotMi8 already commented on this and stated that it would take the same amount of resources as building a brand new chopper like the Blackhawk, for example. It's simply not a wise business decision.
-
Aha I see what you mean. I didn't even notice that remaining 70%. What do you mean by autoupdate? Where do I force this on?
-
Yeah the screenshot is after the SteamVR crash, the 35% is actually DCS World which curiously doesn't crash after SteamVR crashes but keeps running even though the headset stops working. I will try disabling those services if they come up, I will have to google them a little bit first though. They only show up after said crash, which is why I think they might be the cause behind the horrible performance/crash. *edit* I did find this post, which recommends disabling motion smoothing in SteamVR. I might try to force reprojection through WMR and disable motion smoothing through SteamVR.
-
Ok I'm suddenly getting horrible performance again. I think it's windows mixed reality as halfway during a mission it starts to stutter and then it simply crashes SteamVR. Curiosly enough DCS keeps running in the background. The worst part is I changed nothing in my settings. I can't believe that this is really, this hard. I've spent the last three hours troubleshooting it and NOT playing DCS as a result. I think (HOPE, PLEASE GOD BE IT!) it's the WMR and something strange going on in the background with WMR, before it crashes SteamVR it sort of alt+tabs into WMR, and I captured this screenshot. Any ideas? (Are the things in the blue circled normal?)

Hate to wake up a dead subject but F14" "
Lurker replied to Gentoo87's topic in Heatblur Simulations
I feel like we are going in circles. Even if every little detail of this plane (or any other aircraft for that matter) was unclassified, does that mean that anyone in the world can simply build a commercial game product, especially a fairly accurate simulation, using that material? You need would need permissions form the manufacturer and most probably (in the case of military aircraft) the government. -
The upcoming AH64D is probably going to be even more resource hungry than the Hind. In my opinion the exterior models get too much attention. From 100 meters away you can't see any of that detail! Why is it that important in the first place? To me the cockpit needs to be fairly detailed, but I would much rather have a more detailed world so that I can actually enjoy flying and employing my machine of death. To do that effectively I need more frames per second and if the artists spend hundreds of manhours and thousands of polygons to model just oh I don't know the swashplate for example, which I'm not going to be looking at for more than 2 seconds, if ever, then what exactly is the point of DCS World?
