Chuck's Guide to the AH-64D is finally available! *** Link: https://chucksguides.com/aircraft/dcs/ah-64d/ *** I am a few months behind schedule and I apologize to all of you for that. This project was a huge undertaking, and I still have trouble wrapping my head around the fact that I started working on it back in March of this year... 9 months ago. As they say in the business, I was stuck in scope creep hell for a while. The Apache is one of the most complex modules in DCS, but I do not think it is prohibitively difficult to learn. The page count (770) might seem daunting at first, but keep in mind that the operation of the AH-64 is overall not that complicated once you understand the basics. It's a machine of war with modern capabilities that can do many, many things in all sorts of environments. As some of you may know, the Mudspike website is shutting down. With the help of a kind and generous soul, I have found a new home at https://chucksguides.com/, which is where you will find the latest versions of my guides. The next few weeks will be a kind of "test run" to work out the kinks and see what works (or not) with the website. Expect some changes/improvements down the line, but I believe what we have now is functional enough to be useful to the community. Happy reading and Merry Christmas to all of you! Chuck7 points

Hi there. The Mistral missile suffers from several issues and inaccuracies, making it severely underperform. Here is my work, using solid sources, to correct the missile. Note that DCS uses the Mistral located in "./CoreMods/aircraft/SA342/SA342_Weapons.lua" (by Polychop) which is encrypted. So I used and modified the Mistral located in "./CoreMods/aircraft/AircraftWeaponPack/AA_Missiles.lua" (by ED, and with only a few different values compared to Polychop's Mistral) to make my new Mistral version. Here are all the changes I propose, and the sources I've used: - the seeker field of view used in DCS is 14°. That is a ridiculous value. It's 7 times what is used for the stinger or the Igla (2°). Since a larger field of view means that flares stay longer in the field of view of the missile, that also gives an atrocious resistance to flares to the Mistral. That also leads to situations where the Mistral will switch to another aircraft while it's quite far from the intended target... In real life, the Mistral is described as having a very narrow field of view, combined with advanced algorithms, giving it an excellent resistance to flares (Janes Land Based Air Defenses 1992-1993; SAFRAN document on Mistral seeker). I recommend a value of 1°, given the Mistral is described as having a better seeker than the Stinger and Igla in "ANALISIS DEL MISIL MISTRAL INFRARROJO COMO SISTEMA ANTIMISIL Y ANTIAEREO", and the best kill probability of all MANPADS in "MANPADS A Terrorist Threat to Civilian Aviation?" (page 39). - the proximity fuse has a radius of 5 meters in DCS. The document "ANALISIS DEL MISIL MISTRAL INFRARROJO COMO SISTEMA ANTIMISIL Y ANTIAEREO" cites a proximity fuse radius of 2 meters, more plausible for a missile with a 3kg warhead. - the value of K = 2 used in DCS in the autopilot part, is too low. For a short range missile, many articles explain that a value of K between 3 and 5 gives better results (see the attached article "Proportionnal Navigation Guidance"). The AMRAAM in its terminal phase uses K = 4 in DCS. Based on my tests, a value of 5 gives the best results for the Mistral (https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/925038843399376917/955940311354454056/K_effect.mp4 ). And I know it's not definitive and documented proof, but one would wonder why MBDA would not give the better guidance to its missile... - the flag_dist = 150 parameter is too high. It leads to the missile brutally diverging from its target if the target is flanking (see example K = 2 in the video). A value of 50, like the one used for the Igla, combined with K = 5, gives the best hit probability (see example K = 5 in the video). - the GimbLim parameter has a value of 30°. I propose a value of 38°, based on "Janes Land Based Air Defenses 1992-1993", which cites a gimbal limit of 38° for the Mistral 1, and the SAFRAN Mistral missile seeker document citing a >30° gimbal limit. - for omega_max, which is the maximum angular tracking rate of the seeker, I propose a value of 20°/second, as stated in the SAFRAN document about the seeker. - The rocket burn time should be about 2 seconds, rather than 3, based on video evidence ((https://youtu.be/KK9_Iq0AM9k?t=15 ; https://youtu.be/RY78aBlUkMQ?t=27 ). - I add that the missile should self destruct after 14 seconds of flight time (fuse confirmed to self-destruct in the document "poste de tir Mistral", and 14 seconds max flight time cited in "ANALISIS DEL MISIL MISTRAL INFRARROJO COMO SISTEMA ANTIMISIL Y ANTIAEREO". - As a bonus, it would be great to see tha shaped trajectory added. The Mistral is designed to have a shaped trajectory (it climbs a bit just after launch, see photo attached). This is especially important to engage enemy helicopters, as it allows the missile to continue to track them even if they try to terrain mask. You'll find attached a lua file, which is the ED's Mistral file with all the parameters corrected with the values I propose. Some things I haven't included in the lua are the self-destruction at 14 seconds, and modifying the "SeekerSensivityDistance" and "sensitivity" parameters to match a 3.5 times better sensitivity than the Magic 2 missile seeker (according to Janes Land Based Air Defenses 1992-1993. That's for the Mistral 1, but the Mistral 2 we have in DCS basically has the same seeker.) I was turned on to an old mod called DCS witchcraft which opens a web socket and lets you run lua commands live against DCS. You can issue commands and print the return value. It was broken by modern node.js but I posted a version with it fixed for the new js api. Posted here, hope it helps someone else. I’ll put better read me if anyone really uses it. happy modding https://github.com/MrBuzzKillington/dcs-witchcraft3 points

Never ever allow RDP 3389/tcp directly from www-->srv . That was bound to fail. Check if your Router supports a VPN and use that for your pal. With VPN, RDP is no security issue. Just don't open 3389/tcp on the router for any given Windows machine inside your network !!!!!! I use a professional Teamviewer subscription mainly but also use VPN-RDP for some clients sometimes. You can try Teamviewer for private use for free and see if it works consistently or starts to say " suspect professional use..." and cut off. If you do too many different PC's it will act up and moan but its ok for occasional usage to a rather short list of PC's. Windows in not per se insecure, it is as safe as you make it or as unsafe as you let it be. If you only open the DCS ports in your firewall to the specific DCS-SRV it is ok, just do net set that machine into a DMZ, that would be a disaster of the highest order. Use a Windows SRV over a Windows Client, disable services, keep it sleek. Maybe invest in another router if yours does not offer VPN. * Any Backup on any internal or USB drive would be encrypted too !! My tip: Use a backup software that can use SFTP ( Acronis ) and connect to a NAS that only runs SSH service, no Windows File Sharing service activated. That is how I secure my clients on premise Backups. Seen a lot of encrypted servers, it's not funny at all, it is disgusting and utmost criminal.3 points

Happy Holidays Everyone, Progress on the new App is progressing. The core is finished and most of the UI Art is done as well, pending my bad habit of wanting to re-do things to get the best look possible. There is still a good amount of sub-function code to be written and debugged, especially thread syncing between primary and sub functions as well as between primary functions. The App itself is about 85% functional, as stated, with some sub-function code to be written, synced and tested. The only setback so far has been to outside parameters. A few weeks ago, I fractured my left hand, and possibly tore ligaments (MRI Pending). My left hand and lower arm are in a cast, and I am unable to type with it at the present time. That being said, the code work is being done one handed, Just a little slower. Once the App features are finalized and the app is in internal testing, I will be releasing detailed information, and media. The Goal is still Q1 2023, and there's no reason that goal can't be met. Alas, I do not leave you with nothing, being the holidays and all, I leave you with the image below of the new UI Home screen (still WIP, and relevent info redacted of course).3 points

Now with F-14B Tomcat and Supercarrier support! What is this, an interactive CASE 1 trainer? Yes! I made this mission with the intent to make it easier and more fun to practice your skills around the boat. CASE 1 recoveries are one of those things that most sim pilots (that are into somewhat realistic naval flying) want to get proficient in, but it can sometimes be tedious to practice it. The scoring system has been developed with guidance from Lex (former F/A-18 pilot and US Navy flight instructor). How does it work? The mission spawns you 10nm behind the boat (there are also slots for cold start and cat if you’d prefer). As you fly over the trailing ship, the “pass” starts. Approach the carrier from behind and do all the pattern stuff (break, downwind, final turn and a trap/bolter). The mission will track your flying at certain points and give you a score on each point, as well as some real-time feedback. For instance, it tracks if you’re on the right altitude, if you’re on-speed, and how far from the boat you are when abeam. After a trap (or bolter, or even a wave-off), you’ll get a summary on how well you performed in each section of the pattern, as well as a final score, where 75/75 is maximum. It will also tell you what wire you got. Practice and track the progress To restart the pattern, you simply fly back south to the trailing ship. The mission will tell you that you’re welcome back for another pass. In other words, don’t fly straight into the pattern. Instead always perform full CASE 1 recovery breaks and patterns (that’s the whole point of this practice mission). The mission will also keep a little list containing the score of all your passes of the sortie, so you can see if you’re making progress. Multiplayer! Finally, there’s multiplayer support. You can launch the mission with your friends or squadron mates, and the mission will track everyone’s progress separately. Maybe you can even use it to host a CASE 1 recovery competition in your squadron? Things to check out! * Discord: https://discord.gg/bYB4jXQWQW * Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/banklerdcs Final words I’m eager to hear your feedback so I can make adjustments and provide updates based on it. There might of course be smaller bugs and such, just let me know! If this tool helped anyone out, or at least you had a good time with it, I’d LOVE to hear from you! If you’re not already aware how to perform the CASE 1 recovery, I recommend watching this: Jabbers’ excellent video covering the basics: Many thanks to FlightControl (for Moose), Grimes (for Mist) and Lex and Gregory Brett (for patiently answering all my geek questions), as well as the Master Arms community and everyone who helped out with play testing! Also big thanks to Matt Geders and Funkyfranky! DOWNLOAD 7.4.0 Pick the version with your favorite boat: Legacy carrier or Supercarrier. There is also a version that supports the T-45C mod. BLUF, I would like to see SAM’s better modeled within DCS. I’ll be speaking primarily about the SA-2 but the points I bring up apply to other SAM’s in the game. There are a few things on the in-game SA-2 that are modeled but not function such as the trough antennas on the Fan Song Target Engagement Radar (TER) that allow it to do its own limited search function. These antennas can scan a fixed area at a time or be combined with the rotation of the whole unit to provide 360 degrees of search. Another thing missing on the Fan Song is its optical tracker. This allowed crews to track targets without the use of the 2 parabolic dish antennas mounted on top. Since the missile guidance was accomplished using Command Guidance instead of Beam Riding the target aircraft wouldn’t get a missile launch warning until the beam from the missile uplink antenna also encompassed the aircraft. This is also true for when crews tracked targets using the Radars, the aircraft would be alerted via its RWR (Radar Warning Receiver) that it was being locked onto, but the missile launch alert would not be given until the aircraft was in the same beam as the missile. For a brief explanation of why this happens continue reading this paragraph, if you already have a grasp of it feel free to skip to the next one. On radar's like the Fan Song that use command guidance, there will usually be antennas dedicated to tracking a target and antennas dedicated to missile guidance or, "talking to the missile." Because the radar's goal is to get the missile out in front of the aircraft to pull lead and not waste its limited energy, it will be fired with lead and the narrow beam of energy pointed at it to give it commands during flight will likely not encompass the aircraft until the missile and aircraft are very close (this scenario assumes a side aspect shot). The aircraft will be kept in the beam of a tracking antenna that works with a computer or the operator to tell the uplink how to guide the missile. The optical tracker is seen on most "E" models of the Fan Song radar which is the variant modeled in game, this is evident by the placement of the 3 parabolic dishes as well as the trough antenna's. From what I have read the SA-3's Low Blow radar includes similar trough antennas however it does not utilize them in the same search function, instead they act as receivers. These Trough antennas are fixed in place so they are limited in azimuth and elevation in terms of search capability, however the inclusion of these antennas mean systems like the SA-2 are not completely useless if the search radar is offline. Something to note is the choice of search radar for the SA-2 and SA-3 being the P-15 Flat Face in game. In real life as far as I've read the P-18 Spoon Rest was the intended Search Radar for at least later model SA-2’s such as the “D” model we have in game. It was also used with the SA-3, however the SA-3 also used a later version of the P-15 called the P-15M Squat Eye. Both the Spoon Rest and the Squat Eye include better performance over the Flat Face. Something that I cannot confirm (as I do not know how the guidance is modeled) but suspect to be inaccurate is the flight path taken by missiles using command guidance. Rather than being fired and leading the target they seem to lag behind it or travel directly to it as if they were beam riding. My final point on the SA-2 specifically is the maximum range of the system. The Target Tracking radar is the SNR-75M4 Fan Song E (it could also be the SNR-75M3 Fan Son E I have not been able to distinguish between the two systems based on our in-game model). The variant of SA-2 to use Fan Song E’s was the SA-2D which used the 5Ya23 missile. This missile has a maximum range of 76,000 m or 41.04 NM. The missile in game has a maximum range of 28 miles, which while being a more realistic firing range as it's much closer to the "no escape" range of the missile, is still short of the maximum range. It's important to note that the statistics for the type of missile used in game seem to be relatively accurate, I believe it is just the wrong missile being used for the variant of SA-2 we have. To conclude, I would like to see track radars have expanded functionality to match their real world counterparts, the variant of SAM specified (like SA-2B, SA-2C, SA-2D etc...) and the components and missiles of SAMs used in game synchronized and their specifications brought in line with the appropriate variant. Thank you and Happy Holidays Sources: http://www.ausairpower.net/APA-Engagement-Fire-Control.html http://www.ausairpower.net/APA-S-75-Volkhov.html Both sources include other links to information2 points

Hi folks, This took way longer than I wanted it to, but I was able to finally sit down and finish my rockets guide. It is not a comprehensive document nor is it intended to cover all aspects of rocket employment in the AH-64, but instead should offer some use techniques outside of the usual scope. I had hoped to make it a forum post, but the graphics and layout work better as a downloadable document for those interested. Disclaimer: I am not a professional pilot nor armed service member, former or otherwise. This guide only applies to the DCS AH-64 as of December 2022. dcs_ahrockets.pdf2 points

It would be cool to have George controllable by VoiceAttack (a program which can i.a. send custom virtual keyboard presses depending on what you say with your voice). It is possible though, but awkard and unreliable. Hence there is no way to know externally in which cockpit George is sitting, and which flying mode is selected if George is the pilot. In this case, would be practical to either have: all key-commands available (downfall is the clutter in the keyboard bindings) or somehow have access to which current mode George is in and what data is set, such as current altitude, heading and speed, weapons free/hold and so on (i.e. read data from DCS-BIOS).2 points

Actually, I am a bit upset about the public relations aspect of the project. I know the war over Ukraine affected them a lot and nobody will blame them for the delay. But the community is really looking forward to new updates. All they had to do was just release a simple screenshot and share the status of the project with us.2 points

Nothing weird about paper mate - hackers can't get to that! And straight RDP... I'd bet 10:1 that's where the attack came from. The good news / silver lining is that you've been able to now identify the likely method used, and it's an easy fix to deal with it when you do your reinstall.2 points

You don't really have to be, just fly higher. It also helps to target a certain speed. Use Max AB for acceleration and then use a lower AB setting for supersonic cruise when you reach your desired speed.2 points

That is incorrect. And you'd know and understand that if you took the time to understand how these work, where the information comes from, etc. It is hard to relate because you're just being a complete gamer about it, and your self-awareness here is zero. Look at the things you've written, basically: 1) You were so good in the F-14 when it had completely unreal capabilities (27DPS sustained turns with the flaps down? Hello Raptor!) 2) Same for the F-18 You rely entirely on one single aspect of the airframe capability to win, which is sustained turn rate. The issue lies with your skillset, and it is painfully obvious to everyone but you. You literally refuse to draw a logical conclusion here, preferring instead to blame it all on airframe changes. I have bad news for you, while some airframes are superior to others in some aspects, the teen fighters effectively exchange superiority in various regimes and generally are fairly close to each other. If the only thing you're thinking of is best sustained, you're not doing BFM, you're just flying best sustained. You asked for advice. You haven't asked anything specific at all, you haven't attempted to research BFM deeper, you haven't described any detailed combat or provided a tacview or anything at all. All you've done is whine and literally the only thing you've mentioned which is grabbing an F-14 on some public server will have a specific fuel load, well, guess what ... there's a fuel dump switch but in any case those engines will drink the fuel so fast you won't know what happened. So if you're heavy for a while, why not merge with an advantage? Don't know how? You can learn. There's nothing here for you with the attitude you've taken. Yes, you're wrong, and everyone else is right. Tacview is perfectly fine for the vast majority of BFM and BVR analyses.2 points
