Red Star Simulations https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=pfbid0LJ2fsUVhDwmwZjQ4cS4ya5TugNaKt4JJULoEBKQPVzcJ9R5KP4udiWqjqZMM3QZwl&id=100066692146603 Dear DCS community, Welcome to this final update of 2023. Now that Christmas has passed, let us reflect on this year and the current status of the MiG-17F module. • Flight dynamics are 95+% complete • Cockpit model and texturing are 95+% complete • External 3D model is complete and undergoing texturing (60% complete) • Systems modeling is in progress (15% complete) In addition to the module status, we’re taking the opportunity to introduce you to the ASP-4N gunsight and SRD-1M radio range finder (gun radar). The MiG-17F is equipped with the ASP-4N in combination with the SRD-1M. The ASP-4N is a gyro-stabilized, optical, semi-automatic gunsight, similar to but an improvement on the ASP-3N gunsight used in the MiG-15. However, unlike the ASP-3N, the ASP-4N has 3 modes: fixed, gyro and gun radar. A mechanical backup sight is available in case of failure. The SRD-1M is a radio range finder works together with the ASP-4N and can only be used against aerial targets. The radio range finder sends out short periodical electro-magnetic pulses and receives them when returning from a target, distance is calculated and sent to the gunsight. Gunsight Modes: Fixed • The reticle is fixed in position, where the wingspan and distance are manually adjustable, as in ASP-3N gunsight. Gyro mode • Reticle moves automatically approximating the flight of the NR-23 cannon rounds; gyro sight is programmed only with the ballistics of the NR-23 cannon. • It is engaged by setting the handle on the left side of gunsight to gyro mode. • Wingspan and distance are manually adjustable. • Gyro mode is only to be used in aerial combat. Gun radar mode: • Set the gunsight to gyro mode. • Turn on the SRD-1 gun radar located on the left wall, aft of the throttle. • Gun radar relay needs to warm up for approximately 90 seconds by turning ON the high AC voltage switch on the console. Turn off High AC voltage switch after 90-120 seconds. • Gun radar tracking is automatic, the radar chooses the most convenient target plane and locks it on. • Two lamps mounted on the left side of the sight head note a gun radar target tracking. Bottom green lamp illuminates when the target is locked at a distance of 300-2000 meters. Top red lamp illuminates when the target is locked at the ideal shooting distance of 400-1200 meters. • Radar determines the distance and shows the ideal shooting solution. • Ballistics of the gun radar can be switched between NR-23 or N-37 mm cannons. Enjoy the pictures and please note that everything is subject to change. All of us at Red Star would like to thank you for your support over the last year. Happy Holidays and Happy New Year

  2. I added a new entry in the about DCS crashing and units not spawning: FAQ: https://www.currenthill.com/faq I've also just added the brake parachute for the Tu-160M2. But don't fool yourselves, don't try to land this behemoth on a short runway unless you have very little fuel left.

  5. Hi, we apologise on the longer-than-expected delay. Both issues (DL & this) were well communicated and pushed through the internal system. At the mean time we look for workarounds when waiting for an API fix, as @uboats is striving to do. Thank you.

  6. I believe the distinction that many are getting hung up on is the difference between "SEAD" as a dedicated mission within the overarching strategic objectives, versus "SEAD" that is integrated as a supporting task of another objective altogether. Degrading air defenses could be as fancy as bombarding it with electrons from EA-6B Prowler or EA-18 Growler aircraft, or it could be as simple as a commando cutting the power grid to the regional air defense command center or a bomb physically blowing up a radar emplacement. But there is a significant difference between attacking air defense systems to simply remove them from the battlespace compared to attacking them as a means to survive long enough to achieve your mission. AH-64's are not assigned SEAD as a mission unto itself, in that they don't go out hunting for air defenses to sanitize the battlespace. That is delegated to platforms that are actually trained and equipped to perform that mission set, such as F-16's. However, deliberately targeting air defense units at the outset of any engagement is simply a good strategy to ensure that your helicopters survive long enough to achieve the actual objective. This is no different than targeting command and control vehicles before attacking other vehicles around them, or a sniper targeting an officer before engaging the soldiers under their command; it is simply performing proper prioritization of targets as a means to achieve a mission objective. Having said that, there may be specific aircrews designated within the flight that are tasked with attacking air defense units when such units are encountered; but again, that does not mean they are specifically performing a SEAD mission, it just means they are allocated the task to engage air defense units before hand, so no one is asking "Who's gonna attack this SA-8 that is locked on to us?" in the middle of their RWR going haywire. That is just delegation of duties amongst flight members such as who is performing primary navigation, who in the flight is designated to talk to the ground forces in the area, etc. The Task Force Normandy example is an outlier and was a surgical strike conducted by a joint helicopter force against strategic targets following months of planning, training, and rehearsals. It just so happened that this strategic target was a pair of radar sites that would blind the Iraqi reaction time long enough to allow coalition aircraft to penetrate far enough into enemy airspace before a sufficient counterattack could be launched. It was a strike against the enemy's command and control capabilities and early warning infrastructure. At the end of the day, all of this is splitting hairs in an attempt to debate the meaning of "SEAD" as a doctrinal mission set, compared to an implied task that is performed in a tactical situation. But if one is debating whether the AH-64D is an ideal platform for deliberately attacking air defenses, then the answer is no. The AH-64D was designed to destroy armored vehicles from standoff range beyond the weapons employed by tanks, IFV's, and APC's. Mobile air defense units such as the ZSU-23-4, SA-8, SA-15, or 2S6 Tunguska were specifically designed to destroy helicopters and low-flying attack aircraft. Going toe-to-toe with a weapon system that is purpose-built to kill you is silly, much like sending an A-10 or AH-1 with Sidewinder missiles to hunt down MiG-29's. Defending oneself is one thing, to include deliberately planning to defend oneself before even climbing into the cockpit; but that is a far cry from being equipped, trained, and deliberately tasked to go after such units.

  7. Hello everyone, this is Chris, and thank you all for your kind words of encouragement, suggestions, and other feedback. As we are leaving 2023, the second year of DML also draws to a close. It has come a long way, and with no small thanks to you, I was lucky to bring DML from an interesting idea to something that now many people use to make missions more fun for for everyone. As I'm preparing Version 2.0 of DML, I'm shifting its focus to better quality of life: better integration with Mission Editor. As a result, I'm de-emphasizing support for scripting. I've removed more arcane features like call-backs and API, and removed and have rewritten some two hundred pages of documentation -- in the hopes of making the easy things more clear, and done away with the geek stuff. I'm looking forward to the new release in a few days/weeks, and of course your feedback. DML 2.0 is backward-compatible to the current version, so no worries, it will continue to work with your missions. So, as 2023 ticks over into the new year, please allow me to raise my glass (filled to the brim with joy and good wine) to you all, and wish you a happy, healthy and above all harmonious 2024! It has been a pleasure - to many happy returns! -ch

  11. Without even an FF module, let's talk about the 'little things' that you could do, which would also translate to the Su-27 and MiG-29 to some degree, let's start with those: Sensors with more realistic search patterns and time required to execute those patterns (IRST vertical, looking at you) Sensors correctly placing the targets visually in the sensor display as the aircraft turns. Radar channel settings (which could lead to better ECM implementation) - channel settings can be chosen in the ME. Eagle specific: Hot/Cold symbols, cursor and target BRA/BULLS information, correct placement of NCTR data, waypoints on VSD, correct tws submodes using az-bump, and of course correct AACQ modes, including supersearch and GACQ. All of this without a full up FF module. Yes, there wouldn't be settings for anything but that's ok - I suppose no SIT page either, though it would be nice to get that.

  13. @FalcoGer, you are cherry-picking individual statements out of context of the entire post; not to mention treating the "electronic attack" slang term of "bombarding it with electrons" as a literal statement. You can claim whatever you want, but you missed the overarching point I was explaining; which is from the perspective of spending decades doing the job in real-life, not reading about it on the internet. Frankly, I no longer have any inclination to provide such insights on the forums anymore. I've said what I feel was helpful to clarify the debate. Anyone is free to believe me or not believe me; that is their prerogative. Good day.

  14. Haha, I was all over that when I saw the pictures. But unfortunately I can't think of a way to add flares to cruise missiles in DCS. The closest we have in DCS the decoy schemes which will allow for chaff to be released.

  15. Hello CH! time to put in a suggestion. I was thinking maybe some more Russian artillery? I think one you could do would be the Russian Tornado-S, similar to HIMARS. One of the variants is based of the Smerch MLRS already in game, so possible reusable asset there. Other variants too, such as this truck mounted version pictured here. As always just a suggestion, love ur work.

  17. When you are trying to navigate via NDB, the first step is to tune and IDENTIFY the station. You identify the station by listening for the morse code identifier. For the Kobuleti 490 kHz station, the ID is the letter T as shown on this snip If you don't hear the letter T in Morse, you haven't got the station you want tuned properly.

  20. @FalcoGer, the posts immediately preceding mine were referencing publicly-available documents describing real-world applications of SEAD with regard to Army Aviation operations. This is what I was referring to as a means of separating the concepts of SEAD as a doctrinal mission set versus SEAD as a supporting task during a mission. It was not in regards to DCS gameplay. There is no "doctrine" in DCS, just scenarios that are designed and programmed by mission makers. Mission makers can do whatever they want, and players can play however they want, regardless of what real-life doctrine publications state. But that was not what the immediate discussion leading up to my comment was about. The discussion was about what constitutes a realistic employment of the AH-64D as outlined in publicly-available documents.

  24. Currently, if you're hopping into a cold jet, non-smart weapons (excluding A/A weapons and pods) don't show up on the kneeboard by default. Instead, the weapons loaded on the PACS page will be loaded onto the kneeboard. I would like for the kneeboard to show the correct current weapons loadout without having to load them from the A/G Load PACS page.

  37. I agree with your point, but on this specifically I think there already is a feature in DCS that allows you to do that. If the module has keybinds for the ON position as well as for the OFF position, then you can bind the off positionto a button only found in the buttons list called "XXX_OFF". That input registers the stopping of your switch. I've been using it on nearly all airframes, and allows you to set up a physical switch as a 2-way bind. For example, you'd set the ON position to the "JOYSTICK_BUTTON_15" input (by hitting that button in the DCS bind menu) then the OFF position to the "JOYSTICK_BUTTON_15_OFF" bind, which you can find in the list right under "JOYSTICK_BUTTON_15". This allows you to use your HOTAS switches as intended, on all modules that have ON and OFF inputs. If I recall correctly, in my experience only FC3 aircraft have come short in that category, and I've been able to make everything I wanted work on the F1. A friend taught me this a few months ago and I couldn't believe it, it's a great feature and so few people know about it!

  38. MASSUN92´s Animated ground crew and lights MOD -- DOWNLOAD IT FROM: HERE! What a journey, right? As mentioned in today's newsletter (May 17, 2024), the asset pack will become part of the DCS core, allowing everyone to use the assets in their missions without needing to download anything. This does NOT include the animated ground crew and lights, which will still be available for download from the link above. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Before addressing some questions, I would like to thank all of you, the community, for your support and positive vibes. This achievement is also partly yours. On one hand, your support for the asset pack pushed me to make it better and bigger. On the other hand, I'm sure ED wouldn't have noticed the asset pack if so many people weren't using it and creating wonderful bases with it. So feel proud, we've achieved something fantastic! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ - What's going to happen with the mod? I will continue developing content because I enjoy doing it. I love seeing what I create come to "life" within the simulator. According to my discussions with the people at ED, there's a possibility of adding more objects in the future, so feel free to leave suggestions below. - What will happen to the missions created with the latest version of the mod? As far as I understand, and I could be wrong, they should work fine WITHOUT the mod installed. - Will there be improvements? We have an agreement where I will make some minor future corrections to the models. Beyond that, I don't know what the future holds. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ - Who I am? Hi to all! My name is Patricio Massun, I'm a 3D artist and architect from Argentina. My job is mostly related to arch visualization and asset creation for renders. I use this mod to practice some lowpoly, game-ready, real time rendering technics. I use Blender for all my work. All the models of the mod are created entirely by myself and the textures are from ambientcg (old cc0textures.com). All the export process is based on the EDM exported made by Tobi and use the tutorials from Grajo (Without them the mod would not have been possible). - About the mod:

  39. Thanks. The problem also exists in SP. A few fixes were made in 2023 but some aircraft keep declaring they are "dead" although they are not. The remaining affected modules are AJS37, F-16C, Su-27 and Ka-50 modules. I'll test again then bump the internal report. If you notice this issue with any other module, please tell me.

  43. Thats a really good question, and it just made me rethink my method. In the game, with that one plane, I zoomed in until I had about a 110 deg horizontal angle. The resultant VFOV in Snapview.lua was about 62 degrees. What is 110/62? That is a ~16:9 ratio. So if you are doing it the way I did it, letting the game calculate it, that seems to work out as expected. In my case though, I have a 21:9 monitor, but it calculated 62 deg, (not ~47), so now that you mention it, my VFOV numbers must be wrong. Its simple math, but, if I'm making a dumb error, I hope somebody corrects me. I never actually flew today, and it makes me wonder if when I do, objects will appear squashed on my screen. The cockpits looked just fine. Is the new VFOV even being used? This needs to be addressed, like soon.......Customers shouldn't have to be d*cking around with this kind of nonsense, just to get their sim back to where it was a few weeks ago. Why in the world the view system couldn't have just remained the way it worked for the last decade, who knows..... I think for New Year's Eve, I'll just play something else...

  44. Please, don't let an entitled vocal minority spoil your mood. I think that it is the nature of a public forum like this, that praise is rare and complaints are cheap and plenty. A lot about the look and feel of a module and its FM is a matter of taste, and hoping to please everybody is a futile endeavor. However, while it is legitimate to point out flaws and problems in a constructive and friendly manner, it is equally legitimate as a developer to set priorities and ignore disrepectful and unfriendly people. Creation is hard. Criticising is easy. The overhaul and general housekeeping around the Gazelle is very welcomed and much appreciated by many (the silent majority probably) and also - probably an ever ongoing process.... Personally I'm very excited about and looking forward to the Kiowa and will 100% buy it, and so are many others I assume.

  48. I'm with you. Even with airframes that I'm comfortable with, I like an intro phase to get to know the story, local environs, etc. These aren't necessarily the same thing. I agree that a campaign that eases you into the story and theater is welcome. For example, I love campaigns that offer a starting mission where you're the new pilot in the operational theater, so you're doing a check flight first to understand the front line, local nav points, etc. That's great, but it's different from a campaign that is easing you into the aircraft itself, starting with easy milk runs and then adding difficulty later on the assumption you're learning the plane along the way. Hormuz Freedom feels much more like a real pilot in a real war, where you need to be proficient in the aircraft right from the beginning, then deal with the changing situation and missions as the war proceeds.

  49. Hi all, I hope this isn't a daft question but if I've downloaded aircraft in the free trial period and then decide to purchase, do I need to uninstall them and then purchase and re-download,or do I just purchase and ED will give an unlock key or similar to validate the download permanently. Cheers all.
