  1. 10 May 2024 Dear Fighter Pilots, Partners and Friends, We are delighted to share that the DCS: F-4E Phantom II by Heatblur Simulations is slated for early access release on the 21st of May at 15:00 GMT, 2024. If you have not already seen it, don’t miss the F-4E release announcement video, you will be impressed! Hurry, time is running short to secure your -25% discount by pre-ordering now. The DCS: F-16C Viper and DCS: F/A-18C pilot models are progressing well and the 3D modelling of the suits, helmets, and equipment are being finalised. Additionally, we are implementing a large set of realistic and immersive body animations. Read the details below. Get ready for the DCS: F/A-18C Operation Green Line Campaign by Badger633. This is a fictional campaign that continues the "Rise of the Persian Lion II" campaign about the adventures of 'Ford' and 'Matrix' aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln. You can look forward to this campaign in the next DCS update! Thank you for your passion and support. Yours sincerely, Eagle Dynamics F-4E Phantom II Last chance to save 25% The much anticipated launch of the Phantom II is just around the corner. Renowned for its capabilities as a highly effective and versatile fighter-bomber, this iconic jet excels in both air-to-air combat and ground attack missions using a wide array of munitions. With Heatblur’s dedication to ultra-realistic simulation, you can expect meticulous attention to detail from cockpit graphics to the flight model. More details will be unveiled soon. This is your last chance to get the DCS: F-4E Phantom II with a -25% pre-purchase discount. 3D Pilot Models Development Report The upcoming pilot models for the DCS: F-16C Viper and DCS: F/A-18C are set to significantly enhance the realism and immersion of these aircraft. We are excited to bring these updates to you, and we look forward to your feedback. The primary objectives for the new pilot models are to: Enhance visual fidelity and realism in line with new graphical technologies. Improve animation fluidity for more lifelike pilot movements. Incorporate detailed flight suits and equipment specific to the aircraft, reflecting actual gear worn by F-16C and F/A-18C pilots in the mid-2000s Suit Modelling The flight suits are crafted with high-resolution textures to accurately replicate the fabric and material properties. Special attention has been paid to the reflectivity and roughness maps to ensure that the suits react realistically under various lighting conditions. Harness systems and life support equipment have been carefully modelled. For the F-16C pilot, the harness connects to the ejection seat precisely as it would in the real aircraft. The F/A-18C pilot features a survival vest equipped with pockets and gear appropriate for carrier operations. The helmets are modelled with operational visors that can move up and down, helmet mounted displays, and night vision goggles. Animations Subtle in-cockpit movements such as head-turning to check instruments, hand movements for throttle and stick operation, torso movements, and even eye movements are being refined to mimic real-life. We continue to work on making the pilot’s body respond to G-forces more realistically. We hope to include inflation of the G suit during high-G manoeuvres and subtle shifts in weight. Next Steps Once these new pilot models are integrated for the first and third person views for the DCS: F-16C Viper and the DCS: F/A-18C, we will implement a similar 3D pilot model to the DCS: A-10C II Tank Killer. Operation Green Line Campaign by Badger633 This immersive campaign features 12 unique missions that are interconnected through a continuous narrative across multiple Middle Eastern locations. Both carrier and land-based operations are included. Developed with virtual reality in mind, the campaign eliminates the need for jotting down transient coordinates, thereby maintaining immersion. Optional tanker refuelling is available, though careful fuel management can negate its necessity. The campaign includes over 1,700 voice-overs, a 'Speed Stop' feature to prevent missing content during time acceleration, and adjustable AI settings for the final four missions to suit different skill levels. Each mission comes with detailed briefings that are accessible in-game and as downloadable PDFs. Customised aircraft skins are included to enhance the personalisation of the gameplay experience. We hope you took advantage of the F-4E Phantom pre-purchase discount and that the preview of the upcoming F-16C Viper and F/A-18C pilots are to your satisfaction. Also, keep a lookout for Badger633's Operation Green Line campaign, coming in the next DCS update! Thank you again for your passion and support, Yours sincerely,

  3. Late ‘70’s, wandering home from school along a relatively quiet back road that goes near to my then home. Lazy summer afternoon - thoughts drift to hopefully an ice cream when I get there, wonder what cartoons I could watch . . . . RROAARRRR!!! After extricating myself from a convenient roadside bush, I looked to the source of the now only loud noise that had assailed me. The shapely behind of a 2 ship of RN FG-1’s, and the faint tang of jet exhaust hung in the air. I was in awe - I was already “plane mad”, I was a fully paid up member of the EE ‘frightening’ fan club - I had seen Phantoms in pictures in the window of the local recruiting office, but now I had just been assaulted by a pair, and I was in love . I pulled the last remnants of twigs and thorns from my hair and school uniform, and ran home to draw pictures of them. Not two steps in from my front door my mothers face dropped . . . “What in gods name happened to you??, who beat you up??”. I had failed to notice that my trousers were ripped in such a way that basically the last 2 miles home were completed with my ar5e on show, and a fair amount of blood to highlight the spectacle. She refused to believe that an aircraft sneak attack was the cause, and I was grounded for a few days.

  5. When you take a closer look at the high detail AFB's in the Russian area they looks like they were put together by an armature let alone a well know company like ORBX, for a $55 EA map I at least expected much more from this and once again I cant believe even ED let this out in this state, I would really like to know ED's thoughts on the state of this map around all the major airbases and why they look so badly put together, Sinia and even SA the airbases were in a much better state when first released, at least there was some cohesion on how a airbase should look, even in EA we should expect better then this. Take a look at the pics of a major Russian base in the high detail area. Buildings with gates that have no roads through them Big buildings plonked on gras with no access to them via paths or roads. Gas bowsers and fuel cells placed in stupid places with no access and with grass growing though them Garage parking (could be fire service) with incomplete concrete areas Mixed up concrete textures on taxi ways The list goes on, also the fact that most of the good stuff up by Murmansk cant even be destroyed, tyry dropping bombs on the dry water docks....its like what's the point, it supposed to be a combat simulator. If I could get a refund I sure would.

  6. Very nice, will we be able to force NOT to use JHMCS? because right now we can dismount it in the ME but the players can re-equip it with F8 menu, and then we can only change it for NVGs, we can't return to the "nothing" configuration. As a mission maker I would love to see some way to force players not to mount it.

  8. Miltech 5 Bo-105 develop update. Dear DCS Simmers, Today we successfully completed the downwash effect for the Medusa rotor system. All 10 sectors of each rotor blade are included and the distance to the ground is accurately calculated. The first tests were very(!) successful. Next, the ground effect is connected to the MEDUSA rotor system. Air density, temperature, rotor speed, parts on the helicopter and other physical influences are taken into account here. GYROS: Gyro alignment is currently limited from 2 minutes to 10 seconds. However, we will implement a feature in the configuration menu that can be selected between REAL ALIGNMENT and FAST ALIGNMENT. TEST PHASE: We have programmed an extra app for the RL PILOTS that runs during the flight and allows them to influence the intensity of all control inputs during the flight. This app has sliders that are taken over in real time by DCS and are executed directly. Final Tasks for FM: - LUBRICATION - HYDRAULIC - ENGINE (This task will be finalized as soon as we have the inputs from the FM test from the RL pilots) Our Pilot already entered the Cockpit... ROIE, our Co-Pilot is ready ... https://forum.dcs.world/uploads/monthly_2024_05/CharacterCreator_1vtafcldr9.mp4.fbb21c975292433b17d9d4a7a7bbb5bf.mp4

  10. FCR Basics: FCR Introduction FCR Pages and Controls NOTE. As always, these videos provide a preview of an upcoming feature to assist you in understanding a new feature. Later, it is quite possible that the feature will change, and the feature functionality has changed. As much as I’d like to, I lack the time re-record these videos. In this DCS: AH-64D video, we’ll discuss use of the Fire Control Radar, or FCR, Zoom and C-Scope functions. The Zoom function will allow you to expand a small area of the FCR display to distinguish targets in proximity and more easily to engage them. The C-Scope function allows you to display FCR symbols over the HMD and the TADS. These functions are crew station independent, meaning, use in one station will not affect the FCR display of the other station. To use Zoom, the station that wishes to use it must have the FCR selected as the Sight. For a more detailed accounting of the FCR, I’ve listed links to previous videos on the topic. First, let’s scan ahead and detect some targets on the FCR. We can use Zoom in one of two ways: First, by pressing the Zoom button on the TEDAC right handgrip, the FCR will switch to a 6:1 format around the Next to Shoot, or NTS, target. Pressing the button again will return the FCR to the normal format. This is a fast way to zoom in on your NTS. Second, with an NTS, selecting ZOOM from R1 displays a 6:1 white box with an X through it on the FCR is displayed that indicates the footprint of the Zoomed area. Using the display cursor, we can slew the Zoom box anywhere on the FCR display to determine where we wish to zoom into. With the press and release of the cursor enter switch, the FCR will display just the area covered by the Zoom box. You can then use the NTS cycle function and the cursor designation to set an NTS from the zoomed-in display. In both circumstances, if you command a scan burst, the ZOOM format will automatically exit and then return to the Zoom format once the scan burst is completed. Now let’s look at C-Scope. C-Scope is very simple to use, in that it is just turned on or off. However, the capability that C-Scope brings to the crew’s collective situational awareness cannot be over-stated. To enable C-Scope, we’ll bring up the FCR page, and we’ll press button T1 to box the C SCP option, which indicates it is enabled. As we look around with the HMD, we can now see all the symbols that are displayed on the FCR page. These symbols include FCR target symbols, the FCR Next-To-Shoot diamond, the FCR Alternate-Next-To-Shoot triangle, and any recorded missile engagements as X-shaped symbols. C-Scope symbols are displayed in the same manner as the Navigation Fly-To Cue and are displayed virtually over their real-world locations as seen through the HMD. This allows either crewmember to maintain situational awareness of the battlefield as they look outside the cockpit. C-Scope can be enabled in either crew station independently of the other, allowing the Pilot and CPG to determine whether they want C-Scope symbols to be displayed within their respective symbologies. Now let’s hop into the CPG seat and see what it looks like when using the TADS. Ok, now that we’re in the front seat, let’s turn on C-Scope up here. Like before, we bring up the FCR page and press C SCP to enable it. Now, not only will the C-Scope symbols be displayed within my HMD, but if I sight-select TADS by pressing the Sight Select switch to the right, on the right TEDAC grip, the symbols will also be overlaid within my TADS sensor video. This will allow the CPG to rapidly acquire targets on the battlefield which have already been detected by the FCR, which can now be visually identified using TADS optical sensors. C-Scope isn’t just a valuable tool for an FCR-equipped AH-64; it can also be used in AH-64’s that are not equipped with an FCR but have received FCR target data through the datalink. Even if the FCR is not installed, you can still enable C-Scope on the FCR page by pressing C SCP at button T1. As you can see, C-Scope is simple to use, but it is a very powerful feature that can drastically improve the situational awareness of the entire flight, provided at least one AH-64 is equipped with an FCR.

  11. Our beloved aircraft was called one of three things- “Tomcat”, “Turkey”, or “F14”. I also never heard anyone call it “The Tom” until long after it was retired. “The Cat” meant catapult in the Navy. An aviator didn’t fly the Cat, he or she got launched by one. It sounds a bit confusing for a Cat on the Cat for a Cat Shot. The Airboss would confuse the hell out of the deck crew if he had to say, “Suspend CAT 2, the Cat has a malfunction!”. The crew wouldn’t know where the problem was, in the aircraft, or in the launching system. “Cat” also was used in other aviation terms. Cat I, II and III ILS approaches. Cat A,B,C,D instrument classification for approach miniums (has to do with approach speeds vs weather minimums), and Category of RAG student, based on whether a new guy from training command, or a transition from another fleet aircraft, or refresher for someone who had been qualified in the same aircraft on a previous tour. Other differences abound. Such as “Bag” meant flight suit in the Navy, it didn’t refer to external fuel tanks. I've got a briefing in a half hour, I gotta go put on my bag and grab a cup of Joe. Fuel tanks were called “drops” or wait for it, “tanks”. A flight in the USAF is a "ride", in the Navy, it's a "hop", even if it lasts 14 hours, includes six inflight refueling and crosses an ocean. “The Jet” nomenclature came from the USAF, usually used to ascribe drama to a mundane maneuver or situation. They were always talking about “I put nine G’s on THE JET”, or ”the jet SWAPPED ENDS and the left engine FLAMED OUT”. The Navy called an aircraft…believe it or not, “an aircraft”. In recent years, “the jet” seems to have been universally adopted, and even new airline pilots who arrived after transitioning from flying bug smashers now sneer about the proper way to fly “the jet”. For some reason, the term that grinds my gears is “fighter jet”. It’s a dorky sounding term coined by hairsprayed newsreaders on crummy cable television broadcasts. Media uses has made "fighter jet" main stream. So if fighter jet makes sense, then why do we not call a P51 a “fighter prop”? But wait, “cargo jet” sounds perfectly fine, but someone calling a C-130 a “cargo prop” would sound odd. Media also uses the term “Tarmac” incorrectly. “The passengers were stuck on the tarmac for twenty minutes while the crew removed the anaconda from the copilots rudder pedals…” There are three official places “The Jet” can be located on an airport- “a runway, a taxiway, or a ramp”. Some of those surfaces are constructed of “tarmac”, most are concrete. Why aren’t passengers suffering on “The Concrete” during routine cockpit reptile removal? My favorite on this grave, linguistic quandary is a passage by astronaut Michael Collins- a broadly educated, thoughtful man, describing how NASA changed the word “nominal” from meaning “a trifling, or small amount”, into a new usage describing an event as being “normal”. I think of him every time some kid from SpaceX utters it during a Falcon launch to dramatically convey that the payload fairing jettisoned without hitting anything important. Courtesy of NASA, the new meaning of “nominal” made it into the dictionary. I can’t bear to look to see if “fighter jet” has polluted Webster’s hallowed pages yet. Depressingly, it probably has. During the height of the space program, NASA terms also found their way into military aviation, where pilots began to call something that wasn't working as it should, “an anomaly". I heard an A4 pilot say that she couldn't get the canopy to open because there was an "anomaly in the handle linkage". Scrub the launch, get Gene Krantz on the horn, break out the emergency procedures manual and run the "anomaly in the handle" procedure! If a celebrity uses a term incorrectly, it will be instantly adopted. I met John Travolta long ago in the middle of nowhere in an airport FBO. He was on a break while he training for his multi-engine rating with one of my old instructors. Years later, he was on a PBS show talking about how he had a total electrical failure due to a “Transducer Rectifier” failure in his Gulfstream II. No Mr Barbarino, it’s called a “Transformer Rectifier”, and it converts AC power into DC power. That single interview resulted in years of newbie jet pilots going on about Transducers that weren’t installed in their “Jets”. If you’ve read Shakespeare, you know that language naturally evolves, so this is all in fun, but there is no doubt that in an effort to sound cool, participants in aviation, like most endeavors, often end up appearing silly. It’s part of what makes aviation so much fun.

  15. For many years I have been using this little tool to find optimum speed and altitude for AI mission planing. A big problem in DCS is that AI is very inefficient at fuel management and frequently runs out of fuel unreasonably during missions. I think sometimes a contributing factor is excessive fuel burn in the AI flight model at usual flight profiles. I know that ED has told us for years that it wants to improve AI fuel management but we have not seen anything to this effect so far. So I thought I would support the issue with some data. Following are measured best cruise altitude and speed (lowest fuel burn per km) for various AI aircraft. Please note this is only for AI controlled aircraft, even for types which are playable. Take the data with a grain of salt as this is also greatly weight dependent which changes constantly during a flight. The granularity of the measurements is 3000-12000 m altitude at 1000 m intervals and 500 to 1000 kph speed at 50 kph intervals. Lowest fuel consumption per km: Type Altitude (m) Mach Comment MiG-21 12000* 0.84 Higher may be even better MiG-23 7000 0.57 MiG-25 9000 0.86 MiG-29 12000* 0.89 Higher may be even better MiG-31 8000 0.85 Su-17 8000 0.58 Su-24 4000 0.59 Su-27 12000* 0.79 Higher may be even better Tu-22M 4000 0.59 F-4 9000 0.77 F-5E 11000 0.79 F-5E-3 10000 0.78 F-14A 9000 0.68 F-14A-135-GR 9000 0.77 F-15C 12000* 0.79 Higher may be even better F-15E 7000 0.71 F-15E S4+ 9000 0.77 F-16C 9000 0.68 F-16CM 8000 0.67 F/A-18C 8000 0.76 F/A-18C Lot 20 12000* 0.79 Higher may be even better Tornado IDS 5000 0.56 B-1B 7000 0.66 B-52 9000 0.59 E-3 9000 0.59 KC-135 5000 0.6 Some observations: -Cruise speeds for swing wing aircraft are too low. MiG-23, Su-17, Su-24, Tu-22M and Tornado all cruise below Mach 0.6. As AI fuel burn rises rapidly above optimum speed, this this leads to excessive fuel consumption at tactical speeds. A pleasing example is Heatblur's F-14A at Mach 0.77, which shows that it can be done better even for AI flight models. -Some outliers cruise best at very low altitudes. Su-24 and Tu-22M at just 4000 m, Tornado and KC-135 at 5000 m. -Various heavies (B-52, E-3, KC-135) cruise best at very low Mach 0.6. -Other aircraft look quite reasonable, especially the AI flight models of playable aircraft. An interesting outlier is the F-16CM at very slow Mach 0.67. Attached is the full set of test scenarios. But you can easily take any mission, change the aircraft type and adjust the speed and altitude range you want to test in the triggers. Run the mission, wait 40 seconds for the measurements and the results will be presented. FindBestCruiseEndurance_Missions.zip

  26. FYI, we do have access to very high-resolution (1-m to 2-m) LiDAR based elevation data for almost all areas of DCS: Kola. However, overall vertex density (= the number of triangles generated from the raster source data) directly impacts the size of the main surface mesh file, which, with Kola, is already the biggest in all of DCS land, I believe. That's because all of the thousands of lakes, and detailed shorelines, get embedded into that mesh file as well, something other maps don't have a lot of to worry about. We've already integrated some very clever tweaks in the processing stages but hope to do even better in the future.

  36. Sadly it seems that you can't make a helicopter fly 10 feet above the water/ground . But I was a bit surprised how close I got to making it actually work. There is a LHD Essex mod out there with the well deck open. And I was able to "land" dock a LCAC in the well deck. Unfortunately it did this by lowering itself through the deck of the ship.. A real genius with the helicopter code might be able to pull it off. But it might be faster to just wait for ED to add it as a feature.

  38. Additionally, it would also be nice if we could select to open maintenance panels of uncontolled aircraft. Place some static deck crew around and you have a convincing reason for a lone wolf mission.

  39. I grew up in California in the 1960’s and half a dozen times when hiking or backpacking in the northern and southern high Sierra my buddies and I would be almost knocked off our feet by a pair of F4’s at treetop level flying over us, sweeping down one of the river canyons. Loud beyond loud, but when you heard them they were gone. They weren’t supposed to be in the “pristine airspace” but we loved it and I have loved the F4 ever since. Can’t wait…

  44. The Quest 3 has great lenses and doesn't break the bank. You don't *have* to have a ninja GPU but obviously the lower the spec the more compromises you have to make. I hate DLSS (too fuzzy) and ASW/SSS looks terrible with rotor blades for example. So I run MSAA 2x and target 72FPS to run the Q3 at that. This is with a 14700KF, 4080 Super, and 64GB DDR4. I think it looks pretty decent in-game and is very smooth. You just have to decide how much of a tradeoff in visual quality you are prepared to take based on your budget for the immersion that VR brings.

  45. The more I fly it the more I ask my self did ORBX really make this (I have plenty of other ORBX software) the high detail airports are bland compared to anything in Syria and Sinai, the airport building model texture are unaspiring and have no worn look about them in such a harsh environment, also it looks like loads of taxiways and roads have not been completed with airport buildings out on grass with no foot path or road too them or parking, objects at airports seem to be randomly placed, tarmac and taxiway textures have no life to them, airports just don't look real compared to what we have in Caucuses, a lot of airports don't even have a road that goes to them at all. I really cant believe ORBX did this based on other work they have done, too me it feels like they gave it to an intern as a first project, we have all seen what can be done with Syria and Sinia airports', the map needs to lift its game a lot even in the high detail areas. Flying around it, Im fine with that part except for the really odd color pallet used in places its really a very bright pucking green in places, up high over Norway it looks pretty good, I still stand by my point this is too much $$$ even for EA and I really cant believe ED let this out in this state.
