Hotdognz Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 With the new fog, what's the best date/time or weather settings to see it at it's best, I have sent some cool screen shots, but would like to set up a mission to experience it for my self. Thanks Sent from my CPH2333 using Tapatalk 1
Hiob Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 Apart from setting up the fog itself, a great part of DCS looking fabulous is always the time of the day. Make sure that the sun stands deep (early morning or late afternoon)….. nice colours, long shadows……. 1 "Muß ich denn jedes Mal, wenn ich sauge oder saugblase den Schlauchstecker in die Schlauchnut schieben?"

ED Team BIGNEWY Posted December 5, 2024 ED Team Posted December 5, 2024 Auto fog mode will work for dusk and dawn in most cases. Forum rules - DCS Crashing? How does auto exactly work? Do any other weather parameters influence it? Are there any plans to further improve the fog? Like localised settings, for example in trigger zones? Same goes for the duststorm. Rather useless on high elevation maps as the effect spawns at the bottom... 1
Hotdognz Posted December 5, 2024 Author Posted December 5, 2024 Thanks ill watch the video tomorrow. But some more info would be good or a at least a manual, I mean you guys made it so you know what works, I tried dawn on Caucus, auto mode and fog was not that obvious 1
Esac_mirmidon Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 (edited) Try manual mode, dusk or dawn, Broken 2 preset at 6 thousand. Fog visibility 5000-10.000. Nealius Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 The video states that dew point affects the auto fog, however we have no method of setting the mission's dew point. 2
gnomechild Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 Also really curious if there's any way to set the area for fog with the weather system in some way? Right now every fog effect is applied to the entire map, and the only way I've found to get fog in the mountains ends up with several thousand feet of fog at sea level. Hoping there's something more I'm missing because it's pretty hard to use anywhere without making the map look very odd 1
Archangel44 Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 The new Fog is really awesome. I set it with a mission date in April, broken clouds up top, 15 minutes before sunrise and had the fog disappear 30 minutes after sunrise. Set it to 1500 ft thickness with a visibility of 5000 feet. Ramat David Airbase has not looked any better. Thanks ED, About the rest of the Afganny map. I assume it's developed with future dynamic weather in mind?! 1 My improved* wishlist after a decade with DCS *now with 17% more wishes compared to the original
DmitriKozlowsky Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 I don't really see any difference. Except a perf FPS hit of 18-20 FPS when ON. With Volume Light ON or OFF. Otherwise its same uniform fog. Not the turbulent shader in the screen caps. SoI am not sure what I need to have turned ON/OFF.
Gunfreak Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 Here's fog set to lift in the morning. I've set it from quite heavy to medium with 3 minute change. To simulate as the sun finally starts burn away the fog. 5 1 i7 13700k @5.2ghz, GTX 3090, 64Gig ram 4800mhz DDR5, M2 drive.
Dangerzone Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 I'm really wrapped with the visuals I'm getting from the new fog physics. From taking off and landing on the carrier in thick conditions to a more medium fog on the countryside at dawn with the sun low on the horizon. Flying through Dubai at night with the fog layer as well, and buildings sticking out the top is real cool too. In VR - this is so much more immersive. Nice work ED! For now, I'm using manual mode until I can get more clarification/information on how the auto will work better and what parameters to put into it. The two things I'd love to see added are: An option to have the fog patchy, (so it's not a blanket through the whole map at the same AMSL altitude), and greater option with the base and height. Less restriction on the fog height / more options with base and height - so it can be done for inland/mountain areas. I'd love to lower the fog to less than 300ft too. (I've seen thick fog fog numerous times where I'm driving my car and the fog is literally at the height of my headlights at night. You can't see the road more than 100m ahead, but you can see clear in the distance above the layer. Spooky and ultra cool to wittness. I've also seen fog where the base is off the ground by a few meters - so there's a clear patch. I know technically this could be called 'cloud' - so it would be nice to be able to put in fog/cloud layers with no restriction on the base altitude). I'd be keen to know if these are already available in the 'automatic' mode as opposed to manual. 3
Nealius Posted December 6, 2024 Posted December 6, 2024 (edited) Adding another timelapse demo. The fog will automatically transition without requiring the user to micromanage fog keys to recreate the effect of fog lifting. My parameters in this video: Mission start: visibility 6000, height thickness 1000. After 10 minutes: visibility max, height thickness 0 After 20 minutes: visibility 6000, height thickness 1000. The fog will automatically transition to reach programmed visibility and height at the specified time. Edited December 6, 2024 by Nealius 1 1
Hotdognz Posted December 6, 2024 Author Posted December 6, 2024 (edited) Thanks guys for all your help, starting to understand how it works now, how do you make the fog height higher ??. Visibility I understand Thickness would be how thick it is But height of the fog ??, mine seems to pop out to clear at about 10M high Also the fog seems localised to my start AF and doesn't seem to stretch down or up the coast when I use F2 view and zoom out. Edited December 6, 2024 by Hotdognz
Nealius Posted December 6, 2024 Posted December 6, 2024 I was using "height" interchangeably with "thickness" though I see now how that could lead to confusion. As far as I know there's no way to set actual height.
Dangerzone Posted December 6, 2024 Posted December 6, 2024 I thought height was the thickness of the fog (how thick it is from sea level to the top). 1

GrEaSeLiTeNiN Posted December 7, 2024 Posted December 7, 2024 I thought this video was helpful in explaining that the fog thickness was measured from MSL (not GL) and applied throughout the map. Hotdognz Posted December 8, 2024 Author Posted December 8, 2024 So I have it working thanks to everyones help here, using manual mode as Auto doesn't seem to do anything at all.One thing I noticed is wind does not seem to affect it at all.Sent from my CPH2333 using Tapatalk 1
GWdope Posted December 8, 2024 Posted December 8, 2024 Can ED please start updating the manual with these new features? Looked and new fog isn't in there. For a study level sim ED seems to neglect the manual to a baffling degree. 4
