Dear all, A little update on the A-10C II. In addition to the primary task of addressing existing bugs, most of the A-10C II work is on the ARC-210 radio. We are nearing its completion that includes the radio head, HUD data, UFC functions, and COMM page. The remaining item is the STAT page change. Once that is complete, it will enter internal testing. Following its release, we will then add satellite radio functions. At initial release it will include VHF and UHF function (RT1). Once the ARC-210 is complete and delivered, it will bring the module to a feature complete state based on the listed features here: DCS: A-10C II Tank Killer (digitalcombatsimulator.com) Aside from the ARC-210, we still wish to add a 1st person pilot model, but this would come after the Hornet and Viper pilots are complete. To add DTC functionality to the A-10C II, we are also considering an update to the TADS that would entail changes to the TDL and CHG SET pages. This would allow both SADL and Link 16 data through a gateway. However, this is not a promise and something that would only come after DTC functions for the Viper, Hornet, and AH-64D. Merry Christmas and all the best for 2023, Wags38 points

Dear all, Merry Christmas and all the best for 2023! As the team prepares for some well-earned time off, here is where we are with the Hornet: Highest priority is on bug fixing. This includes, but it not limited to issues with the Harpoon, SLAM, and SLAM-ER behaviors, ASE dot behavior, etc. We are performing a ground up review of and refactoring of the Hornet flight model and flight control system. This also includes a large update to the landing gear model. New and improved pilot model. Once this is complete, we’ll do the same for the Viper. Refactoring the radar for more accurate performance. Once this is complete, we’ll do the same for the Viper. We’ve updated the ALR-67 to include new functions and symbols. Following the next Open Beta, tasks include: IAM loft cues. New bomb fuzes like DSU-33 and JPF. MUMI page and DTC. This will follow the Viper DTE page and DTC. A review of MSI functions based on available data for the version we are modeling. Please note that the above are just the highlights is certainly not 100% inclusive of all planned work. Kind regards, Wags37 points

Dear all, Merry Christmas and all the best for 2023! As the team prepares for some well-earned time off, here is where we are with the Viper: Highest priority is on bug fixing. The alternate gear handle and arresting hook tasks are complete and currently undergoing internal testing. You should see both in the next Open Beta update. We’ve done a lot of work on the ALR-56M RWR and added new functions, audio, and symbols. After the next update, the final big ALR-56M task will be the Handoff function that is currently being gated by the PRF audio tones. Adjusting AIFF and ROE Tree logic. New bomb fuzes like DSU-33 and JPF. Following the next Open Beta, tasks include: Tuning air-to-air performance including look-down and search to bug target delay. This will follow the refactoring of the Hornet radar. Air-to-Air datalink assignment functions. Digital Maneuver Cue (DMC) and Loft indications. IAM loft cue. Further work on Link 16 and adding air-to-air target assignments. A 1st person pilot model that will follow the new Hornet pilot model. Radar Velocity Search mode. Further out are items that include: ALE-50 towed decoy (first need new rope physics). Sniper ATP. Data Transfer Equipment (DTE) page and functions. We will start with the MPD, LINK16, and COMM sub-pages. Please note that the above are just the highlights is certainly not 100% inclusive of all planned work. Kind regards, Wags37 points

If you haven't checked out yet, the Caucasus Free Flight in Instant Action has been completely redone. It is now more combat mission. No dummy bombs, we have live munitions, our leader is shooting mavs, everything on the ground is blowing up, burning, smoking... Nice change. I always use this mission to test VR settings and was quite surprised!5 points

Flat shadows are created by making a flattened version of each object and drawing it as shadow. This is an older method of creating shadows, not very efficient when there is a lot of high-poly objects around (like on a ramp) but it does not put as much load on the GPU as the GPU-based "default" shadows. For example when flying over a city where there are many simple buildings and trees, it will perform better. But why in 2.8 there's so much more geometry generated with flat/off shadows, and why even "default" option reports a lot of extra geometry for no apparent reason, I've no idea. That's the question to ED devs. Another example is the same mission tested in VR. Standing in the parking spot and looking to the right. You can see that "Default" shadows in 2.7 put a bit more pressure on the GPU, but less load on the CPU, so it's always a tradeoff. Either way, RTX4090 + 5800X3D is able to make 90 fps on "High" preset in this particular scene (just barely). That's simply not possible in 2.8. Even with "default" shadows, there's noticeably higher load on both CPU and GPU comapred to 2.7. "Flat" shadows in 2.8 are abysmal, with 30% increase in CPU frametimes compared to the same setting in 2.7. Only turning the terrain objects shadows OFF brings the performance back, but the CPU load is still suspiciously high, higher in fact than 2.7 with default shadows on. No wonder with all that extra geometry created for no reason, as explained in the first post. 2.7 preset HIGH, terrain objects shadows default: 2.7 preset HIGH, terrain objects shadows Flat: 2.8 preset HIGH, terrain objects shadows default: 2.8 preset HIGH, terrain objects shadows Flat: 2.8 preset HIGH, terrain objects shadows OFF: hornetReadyRampVR.trk5 points

Hi. This is actually the same mod as Black Shark 2 Custom Cockpit mod. I adapted it for Black Shark 3. This mod includes a few modified parts of Ka-50's current EN cockpit. Colored temp and pressure gauges. Autopilot buttons. Reduced brightness. Yellow zebra texture on Master Arm switch. Rockets parameters table (from Ricardo's cockpit work). L-140 Laser "OFF" and "OPER" texture bug - fixed. Made proper backgrounds for a few "OFF" label. Darkened the Rocket Correction Tables on the right door. UV-26 buttons (from Ricardo's cockpit work). IAS table on the left door (from Ricardo's cockpit work). Warning marks on the from dash gauges and APU gauge. Feet scale for altimeter gauge. Knots scale for airspeed gauge. New ID number plate background (from Ricardo's cockpit work). B, H, K letters on the power indicator is now T(ake-off), M(ax), C(ruise). EN red flags on ADI and HSI. This mod also includes my "Dirty Windows" mod. Thanks, Dev. DOWNLOAD: DCS: Black Shark 3 - Custom Cockpit Mod v1.0 (Upload: 12/2022)4 points

I used the Hornet ready on the ramp instant action mission comparing both the latest DCS 2.7 and 2.8.1 which was uploaded to "stable" branch yesterday. Using clean DCS "saved games" folder, "high" graphics preset, just changing the Terrain Objects Shadows option. So it's the same track, the same preset and the same conditions in both cases. The tests are on a PC with Ryzen 5800X3D, RTX4090 and 64GB ram, in this scenario the game is CPU limited all the time. The results, according to the built-in stats are: Version Objects Shadows FPS Objects Triangles 2.7.18 Default 139 1511 1,5 milion 2.7.18 Flat 130 2689 2.8 milion 2.7.18 Off (doesn't work) - - - 2.8.1 Default 131 1700 2,5 milion 2.8.1 Flat 111 3880 6,4 milion 2.8.1 Off 133 3880 6,4 milion Several issues are clearly visible: 1. Even with terrain shadows set to off, the game is preparing all the shadow related geometry like it would with Flat shadows. Which is A LOT, especially for something that is never displayed on the screen. It may be related to the fact, that this option still creates shadows in 2.7 even when OFF, and it might not have been correctly disabled in 2.8. 2. Flat shadows generate a lot more geometry in 2.8. In 2.7 the increase between "default" and "flat" is 86%. In 2.8, the increase from "default" to "flat" is 155%. I'm not surprised that Flat shadows create extra geometry, as I understand they work by creating a "pancake" version of every model and add it to the scene as shadow. I'm not even surprised that this option in both 2.7 and 2.8 generates less FPS in this particular scene, as it doesn't work well when there's a lot of high poly models around. It still works better when there's a lot of shadows from a simple geometry, like flying over a city. But what's surprising, is the huge jump in generated geometry between 2.7 and 2.8, which is reflected in FPS hit: 7% in 2.7, but 15% in 2.8. 3. Flat shadows look nothing like they did in 2.7. In the previous version they were sharp and aliased. In 2.8 they are smooth and blended. Don't think it comes for free. 4. Even in a "best case" scenario with "default" shadows, DCS 2.8 is creating 66% more triangles for no apparent reason at the same game settings, according to the metric in game. It looks like the poor performance in VR is just a reflection of worse 2.8 performance overall. It's just that people playing the game in VR are more susceptible to 10-20% drops in performance, while on a monitor it may not be noticeable if the game now makes 110 FPS instead of 130. Also with a weaker GPU the results will look different, as it will mask the problems with CPU being overloaded with extra geometry in 2.8. 2.7 flat: 2.7 default: 2.8 default: 2.8 flat: 2.8 off: hornetReadyRamp.trk DxDiag.txt4 points

Oh, you... you know, your near-constant negativity about the F-4E Phantom is one of the things that inspired me to make this post, right? Putting aside the fact that you peddle your own versions of the historical narratives and doctrine of the USAF regarding the F-4, and the fact that you entirely disregard years' worth of USAF tactical development and improvement over the course of Vietnam and beyond, as well as entirely misunderstanding the F-4E's role and configuration to the point of disregarding the piles of evidence that other members have given... If I'm being honest, nobody on this forum could care less about your constant negativity about the F-4E and your worship of the F-4J and F-4S, to the point of your previous complete apathy towards the rich histories of any other force that used the F-4 other than the US Navy, which frankly, I find disrespectful to an extreme. If you want actual diversity of scenarios and operational functions, fly the F-4E. At least it can fly more mission profiles than just intercepts and TARCAP. Otherwise, I'm not really sure why you even bother. This is an F-4E forum. This is about the F-4E. The USN isn't the only user of the Phantom and honestly, if you really want to push the angle of the USN F-4J "mattering" more? The F-4E was used by more nations than the F-4J and its derivatives ever were. Please stop being such a negative nancy. We're getting an F-4E, I'm sure an F-4J comes later, but your opinion does not matter to most of us and trying to force us to swallow it only sours you and your reputation. The F-4J NEVER, EVER outperformed the AIr Force's F-4Es on the ground up north or even in any of the conflicts afterwards. The truth is that the F-4E, as a multirole fighter-bomber, is both better in concept and execution than the Navy's half-baked attempts at including some sort of bombing ability in the F-4J. I'm sure I would very much enjoy using a manually adjustable mil sight or using LABS when I can just use a TV-guided munition, laser-guided bomb, a Bullpup or a Maverick instead- or in later variants, quite literally just aim, wait, and then drop with the CCIP function introduced by the DMAS bombing computer. Your points that I have read, time and time again about the US Marine Corps and US Navy somehow being whiz kids who can hit a mortar size target while the USAF can't apparently hit the broad side of a barn just land wrong to the point of sheer lunacy. I've read the diaries and talked with pilots who headed north with the Air Force and the Navy. You're really just being delusional about the skill differential- if it existed at all. The USAF and USN were both extremely dedicated forces and extremely good at their job, and your comments about the US Air Force's pilots frankly disrespect the veterans who flew, fought, and died in some foreign field of Not-America and turned into shooting stars shooting past Thud Ridge Up North. If you really want to push the air to air angle- sure, the F-4E had less kills than the F-4J, but that implies you completely blind yourself to the fact that 41+45+23 makes 109, which is the kills that F-4Cs, F-4Ds and F-4Es made. The F-4J made thirty kills, the F-4B eleven. The USAF overall leads the USN in terms of air to air kills with the F-4 over Vietnam, because you apparently forget the fact that the USAF has three major F-4 variants that went into Vietnam. You push a false narrative about USAF training as if it never existed, which it does not. The USAF very much embarked on a similar training program to retrain its pilots, which lead to the present doctrines at Fighter School at Nellis, and saw fruit in Late Vietnam (though not yet results) in '72 as part of Rivet Haste, and later would bear true fruit with the Israelis as US-trained pilots tussled with their highly motivated, well-trained Soviet counterparts over Egypt in '70 and won, as well as when they took twenty-eight planes on with two F-4Es, and won. Let us also not forget the contributions of the Wolfpack, of which famous names such as Robin Olds are often held in high regard- the man who helped brainstorm and ultimately executed the operation that shot down seven MiG-21s in a single day, knocking half of the early MiG-21 fleet in '67- training be damned! But please, stop trying to w**k off the F-4J. We get that you like a different Phantom variant. I am pretty sure however that not many of us care for your attempts to force your tastes, your desires and your often completely spurious opinions onto us. Hear hear.4 points

It strikes me that, perhaps, HB did finish the Phantom "in time," but they've been working with ED on its final stages. They may have sent it off to ED for final approval and what not, but it just wasn't enough to hit it in time.4 points

fair enough, and I agree I dont think it's likely to be a windows or patch problem for the same reason I have seen some fairly radical performance variations from using older drivers ... the only other explanation I have is ... people are not measuring correctly... so for example of those who arent having a problem how many of them are using ASW/MR/MS etc... and are still "over the frametime limit" and so are taking the hit, they just never notice it (and then not measuring without it, but, I know BN doesn't run MR on his G2) ... it could be a driver, but again that would be just masking the effect with driver performance improvements.3 points

The year 2022 is coming to an end. The tragic events in my region do not allow me to rejoice and have fun. There were many problems and ahead of them, too, will be many! But I continue my activities and here is some action plan for my few subscribers! Campaign MAD AH-64D awaits its release - And the battle rages on! This time you are a hereditary Bedouin, an officer of the UAE Air Force, a pilot of the Special Operations Squadron - Captain Khalid Al-Mansouri. The USA has strengthened it’s military forces in the region, Iran is embroiled in a civil war but it continues to protect its interests in the Persian Gulf. Maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz is at a standstill and every day hostile sides enforce security protecting their oil tankers from enemy sabotage. Information that Iran still has nuclear weapons added fuel to the fire. In the collaborative operation with NATO "Preventive Blow" in the heart of the Musandam Peninsula, you will be met by wind and sandstorm. You will take part in the NATO Helicopter-Ship Qualification in the Arabian Gulf, as the locals call it. You will take part in the landing on the coast near the city of Bender-Lengeh, as well in the assault on a large city as part of a major operation "Sweltering Heat" The Special Operations Squadron is one team! And during all 12 missions you will be able to feel like a part of this team. Each mission for you is a flight as part of a group as a wingman or as a leader! A realistic and interesting story will reveal interesting facts about the weapons and capabilities of the Blue Coalition for you. Detailed and high-quality work from Stone Sky will once again surprise you. In this campaign you will: - secret operations of the US Army and NATO on enemy territory; - an operation to free a CIA officer on enemy territory; - take part in CAS operations; - take part in CSAR operations; - take part in assault operations; 12 narrative missions with English, Russian, and Chinese localization; Over 1300 voiced story radio dialogues; Over 1400 triggers. ___________________________________________________________________ In January, I start creating the continuation of the story - CREW. This work will take about 2-3 months, I hope. This story will be available to you on all DCS helicopters ___________________________________________________________________ I also plan to continue the series of MAD campaigns, where you can enjoy a virtual war between the strongest representatives of the Blue and Red coalition. I will have to give up the real names of the countries due to the tightening of the dictatorship in my country. ___________________________________________________________________ Many thanks to a small group of people - English-language editors of the text, consultants, voiceover actors. I sincerely thank you for your help! ___________________________________________________________________ I hope 2023 will stop the war! Happy New Year, everyone! And Merry Christmas (in Russia, Christmas is January 7th) PS The most important event in my life awaits me - in February I should become a father. HAPPY NEW YEAR! ROCK N ROLL CONTINUES!3 points

Since the release of 2.8 two months ago we are reporting problems with shadows and, above all, the flat ones and the only thing we get from ED is "we are looking at it" I dont doubt that ED is working on it but an explanations would be great if are taking more than two months to fix it, we don't know what they changed and why about something working fine, we dont know if, for ED, this is a real bug or if its working as intended, just "we are looking at it" while the ones of us that spends thousands on a VR rig want to throw it through the window...3 points

Hypothesizing on possible reasons: ED was saying that 2.8 would bring "Performance improvements to VR". My best guess (and it's only that - a guess) is that the implemented changes are probably a necessary step towards the development of MT and/or Vulkan - and they have done so with the expectation at the same time we should see improvements in VR but instead we're seeing the opposite. Another possibility - given that other additional features have been implemented (such as rainbows) when we still don't have performance improvements - it's also possible that ED are focused on improving the visual aspect even though it continues to be more taxing on existing systems prior to actual improvements being released, because let's face it - those youtube video's make DCS look good - even if VR users are hurting more with this update. Both of these are just guesses though. I seriously hope my first guess is closer to the mark. I'm disappointed to see Stable Release get elevated to 2.8.1 with this being an unaddressed ongoing issue. I hope both a fix, and a quick Stable promotion to said fix comes soon.3 points

To be fair, it can be normal for the missile to go directly to MPRF active, it depends on the aspect/closure of the target. That said, as far as I know, HPRF is not implemented in DCS, and even if it is, the symbology is missing in at least the F-18. (Should be a solid "A" for HPRF active on the ATTK page, and flashing "A" for MPRF active) -- It would be great if HPRF active was implemented into DCS, it's important to BVR!3 points

HSI course setting does not take into account the magnetic declination. Which causes CDI to show incorrect deviation from course. For example here I'm parked on the runway heading 028 and tuned to LSV tacan at the opposite end. Bearing pointer shows correct direction to the beacon (25 degrees), yet CDI is centered when I set the course 37 degrees on the HSI, not 25. This difference happens to be the magnetic declination on this map (12 degrees). Same problem exists with VOR. CDI should be centered when course setting is the same as bearing to station. The two pointers should align. VOR and TACAN use magnetic bearings.2 points

Nicko's, The correct behavior is for the image to stay there until you deselect freeze. I talked to an F-16 driver about this recently. ED has modeled this incorrectly in both the F-16 and F-18. Of course, there are no public documents that say this -- but there are also no documents that say the screen should go black (which it currently does in DCS) Hope this gets some attention at some point. Helos typically fly at speeds inside the main beam clutter notch filter (<~100 knots) Helo detection is thus primary achieved via the rotor blades, due to their doppler shift. The best reflector on a helo is its tail rotor. its RCS is higher than the main blades when a vertical polarization is used (ie Fighter Radars). The main blades have a higher RCS when a horizontal polarization is used (ie some ground based Radars) (Reference) It also spins faster than the main blades and thus its doppler shift is more likely to sit in the clutter free doppler spectrum (or closer to it where the sidelobe clutter is weak) Thus, the best detection aspect is from behind the helo (clear LOS on tail blade; tail blade has high relative velocity from this aspect, thus good doppler) (simulation of Helo RCS, though the authors unfortunately did not mention the polarization used. Ignore the RCS reduction techniques modeled and look at their default RCS. Keep in mind that this paper is on RCS in general (ie including ground radars) not RCS against a fighter (primary detecting doppler). From the front aspect, you have no LOS on the tail rotor. From the side aspect, you have LOS on the tail (thus high vertical pol. RCS), but the doppler shift is not significant bc the relative velocity from this angle is minimal. While it may seem as though the blades have a very small RCS (they do), they also scatter their doppler shifted RF across the helo's fuselage which in turn scatters some of this RF back to the radar. (ie multipath effects between the rotors and fuselage significantly increase the RCS of the helo).2 points

The whole jamming environment needs an overhaul in DCS. Burnthrough range is always the same for all aircraft and radars, no matter target RCS, radar power, jammer and radar technology... the AMRAAM never lofts even if the target in within burnthrough range, the AMRAAM seems to remain in hoj mode without trying to get a radar lock (or has no burnthrough range modelled)...2 points
