  4. 08 November 2024 Dear Fighter Pilots, Partners and Friends, Two new exciting tools for DCS Core are currently in development: The Multi-Select for the Mission Editor and a more streamlined DCS Updater that is integrated into the launcher! Both are coming soon. Please read the details below. Coming to DCS, the F/A-18C Arctic Thunder campaign by Baltic Dragon will contain 10 missions that place you in the cockpit of a Finnish F/A-18C over the Kola map. In addition to providing an immersive experience that is to be expected from Baltic Dragon, it will also allow you to interact in the campaign using your stick and throttle rather than the F10 menu. Stay tuned! Time is running out to take advantage of the Pimax Crystal Light VR headset promotion. Enter DCS2024 at checkout on Pimax.com to earn 15,000 ED Miles ($15 in the DCS e-shop) with your purchase of a Crystal Light. This offer is valid until November 29th. Also make sure you sign up for the Pimax Dogfight 1v1 2024 event, running November 16-24th for some intense aerial combat and great prizes. Learn more below. Thank you for your passion and support. Yours sincerely, Eagle Dynamics DCS Core Development Progress Mission Editor Select Tool Coming soon to the Mission Editor is the ability to group together units, objects, trigger zones, and drawings into a larger group that can be moved as a whole using ‘click and drag’. You can also copy, paste, delete, and rotate them. This makes the process of creating missions in DCS much easier and faster, particularly when using hot keys. Planned Improvements to DCS Updater The amount of disk space required for an update will be reduced to the size of new files with no additional space for intermediate processing. This will assist those of you with little remaining disk space. Parallel unpacking and checking of large files. This aims to drastically reduce the unpacking time and the time for verification of files. Please note that the updater downloads and unpacks all new files before deleting the replaced ones to keep DCS in an operable state as long as possible and to reduce the update installation time. This allows updates to be paused or cancelled without breaking the game. For restricted disk space scenarios, it is possible to create an update mode where old files are deleted before downloading new ones. However, you will not be able to run DCS until the update is completed. With the upcoming integration of the DCS Updater into the launcher, downloading of updates in the background while running the game will be possible. F/A-18C Arctic Thunder Campaign by Baltic Dragon Coming Q4 2024 February, 2024. Finland is on the verge of joining NATO when the unthinkable happens: Russian armed forces push through the border while cruise missiles rain down on the country. Several western allies immediately join the conflict to fight alongside their Finnish brothers in arms. Baltic Dragon has created a fictional Kola map scenario based on real life events and tactics. Strap into a Finnish DCS: F/A-18C, take off from a hidden road base. Take part in study level, highly realistic missions such as CAP, CAS, SEAD and precision strikes. Follow real life procedures in unprecedented detail. Launching simultaneously, a companion F-16C Viper campaign by Reflected Simulations will be available that is woven into the same storyline. Now is an excellent time to purchase the Kola map! Experience what it would be like to fly as a fighter pilot in a large-scale air war today. Key Features: 10 immersive missions with a variety of different tasks: CAS, X-CAS, CAP, escort, pre-planned strikes, and more. An interactive intro mission that guides the player through the most important aspects of the campaign. Operations from road bases in Finland. Over 2,200 lines of dialogue with voice-overs. Custom ATC interaction for all the missions. Optional use of air-to-air refuelling or the choice to skip it. Detailed documentation, flight plans, maps, and target information available in both PDF format and from within each mission as part of the kneeboard. Pimax Crystal Light Promotional Advert Why Choose The Pimax Crystal Light? 5. Hello everyone, I hope everyone is doing well. I just wanted to give you all an update on where I stand. I will be having back surgery the first week of Dec. Something I have been trying to avoid for the past 9 1/2 years. However, all my other options to get back pain relief have been exhausted. So this is it for me. I'm just praying for relief. So to not think about surgery so much I have been working on AI Ship mods. They include Kidd, Spruance Class destroyers, the USS Bowen, and the Thaon di Revel class frigate. I'm hoping to release the Thaon di Revel class frigate with the Italian pack before my surgery. I will be releasing them as a Beta version although I'm not happy with the textures of the FREMM class. I plan to completely redo the FREEM Class as I have been software to help with creating UVs. Anyway, that's the plan. I don't have any specific time frame to release them. I will just release them so stay tuned and thanks for your patience. Photos are below of the AI Mods I'm working on. All are still a WIP.

  8. I don't get where you get these statistics from. Either way, I play mostly online. A decent ATC would be enjoyable for everybody, not just those who play one way over another. Even in "that" flight sim with a functioning ATC I sometimes just screw around for some "airquake" if I feel like that on that day (though that is rare). Taxiway takeoff, landing without clearance, cutting people off in the pattern, the works. And what does "their" ATC do? they have to deal with it, and they actually kind of do. If you cut them off in the pattern, they will adjust speed or abort if it can't be saved; if you incur on the runway, tower will tell them to go around, and they will. My point is that a better ATC doesn't mean you can't just not use it, ignore it, and play airquake if that is what you want. The state of DCS ATC - and comms procedures in general - is atrociously clunky, unrealistic and unhelpful - both to humans and AI, both online and offline. Having a real person doing ATC is great, but you don't always have that luxury, and more often than not they don't know what they are doing, or they are doing something else (GCI instead of ATC). And even with a dedicated controller, they can quickly become overwhelmed, managing multiple airports, and all aspects of every one of them, with AI not listening to a word of theirs. Meanwhile ED works on swapable pilot patches; something that people won't ever see except with free camera on the stand. They literally see it once, think "oh cool", and then it's inconsequential for them for the rest of their lives. And even if it were the coolest thing since wing flexing, it has no gameplay value. They promised improvements for over a decade and we got nothing at all. It's still the same as when I first started back when every module had it's own executable and if you switched you had to restart. I wanted an update on the progress. Want to know why nothing is delivered when it can be rolled out incrementally. Ground, tower, departure, approach, area, awacs are all distinct and can be implemented and released separately. we got exactly 0 of these items. Are you telling me it's so infinitely complex and complicated to do even one of those things in 10 years, when it has been proven that a bunch of volunteers with day jobs can do a very decent approximation of ATC in their free time - as a mod without the original source code? Said mod also has a solution for that problem. You get to pick what you want. Fully vectored approach, overhead break landing, or the do-whatever-you-want approach, where they just shut up and let you land - while still making sure that nobody is coming onto the runway while you are on final. Also oh god - they made you fly an approach the proper way without shortcuts. the horror. Of course ED may not do it that way, but it still can be done. This is a combat flight simulator. We won't get departure windows, we get departure times, and if we are delayed we get pushed in behind the flight the went in front of us. Of course this particular issue will have to be worked around somehow if you are in a setting where respawning is a thing (like online). As for offline missions and campaigns, this is fairly straight forward. You get slotted in some time before your departure, have some time to prepare the aircraft, and then it's go time. Or again, you can just ignore everything and just go, same as before. ATC should never say that, as someone stepping on the "unable" part would result in the pilot understanding "clear for take-off". instead they'd say "hold position" or "hold short". I disagree. Competition pushes innovation. ED might disagree and say there is no competition - which I find ludicrous. Even a book is competition for DCS, competition on how people spend their money and free time. Another modern aircraft combat flight sim much more so. Either way, at the very least it shows what is possible and can provide inspiration on how to improve or find solutions to problems by looking at how other people solved those same problems - like people not wanting to fly "pointless full procedures" all the time. DCS prides itself on it's realism, but what we have right now is neither realistic, nor helpful. In fact it is annoying and dangerous. Getting cleared to land on a runway with traffic on it, or getting yelled at "hold position" because some guy is taxing around on the other side of the airport, or struggling to ask permission to land for the 7th time on final before being responded to is bad UX and bad realism. The way it is right now is basically no ATC. if you prefer that, don't tune your radio to that frequency and just land however you please, and you get exactly the same experience - exactly the same way you experience pilot patches if you don't get in real close with the free camera. ATC should handle all aircract, player and AI, in a reasonable, realistic manner. Give us the english ICAO standard first, use that everywhere at first - yes even in a 1940s scenario in syria, because that is clearly better than the buggy mess we have now. Then add your weirdo ATCs and procedures in different languages if you care enough at that point.

  9. Welcome to Vietnam War Vessels 0.7.0! In this update, we have introduced the O-1 Bird Dog (AI) light observation aircraft, along with two Indochine-style huts. The O-1 is a low-speed plane designed to support CAS missions; while jets handle the skies, the Bird Dog stays close to the ground, marking targets with its smoke rockets. It comes with four liveries: two Air Force, one Marine, and one Norwegian. We have also refined some existing assets. The A-1 Skyraider now features the unique "toilet bomb" loadout, and the CVA-31 Bon Homme Richard has received several visual improvements, including rearranged textures for the main mast, gangways, rescue boats, davits, and the LSO platform. Additionally, catapult operations on the Bon Homme Richard have been revamped, making it easier to connect with the catapults for takeoff. Our thanks go to Odyseus, Pirat3n, Hawkeye60, Citizen, James J. Jackson and mrflyboy - developers and testers of the mod. https://github.com/tspindler-cms/tetet-vwv/releases 2024-11-07 A-1 Skyraider - Fix toilet bomb pylon position - Reduce toilet bomb count to 1 from 50 MiG-17F "Fresco-C" - Fix distance lods CVA-31 Bon Homme Richard - Close bottom of LSO station DD-731 Maddox - Enable firing sounds for three main turrets 2024-11-05 buildings - Initial release of two Indochinese huts from Pirat3n A-1 Skyraider - Add infamous toilet bomb as loadout MiG-17F "Fresco-C" - Use correct distance lod edms O-1 Bird Dog - Initial release of this light observation aircraft CVA-31 Bon Homme Richard - Texture updates for island, LSO and rescue boat - Improved hook-up behaviour on both cats - Use a different wake class (Arleigh Burke) - Add CVS16 routes

  10. What I find so disappointing is that we have the infrastructure in place, the technology in place. Static objects can have, and support, "Paint Schemes". So methinks that adding "sand", "ice", and "stone" paint schemes to FAPS would be a matter of adding a texture map and a settings (text) file. Let us hope that ED find it in their hearts to invest into this request. Maybe the 5th year after acknowledging this will be the charm?

  12. The current kneeboard counter is unrealistic (and looks a bit War Thunder) So here's an idea to improve the realism and aesthetics! This addition to the AI GUI more closely follows the layout of Petrovich's countermeasures control unit, and indicates remaining stores by active/expended cassettes instead of individual flare/chaff cartridges - much more realistic.

  14. Some of them look great already. My suggestions to make it more realistic: - more smoke/dust that stays longer during and after the falldown phase, to both hide the models overlapping and make it more life like - more debris (rocks, bricks, concrete) and irregularity on bigger area to avoid the solid lava pile look

Working on beefin Anderson Airfield up on the Marianas and have several places to deploy her to including FARPS. Great work Nomad!!!!!!!! Out of curiosity, how much have you enjoyed making this and has it inspired any future projects once the Cobra comes out. There are so many options for Vietnam, I would love to see someone with your talent create. I might even be able to lend a hand in the photogrammetry department if you decide to do something else. We a lot of Air Museums here in TX and I minored in photography. Would love to take a stab at making some photo realistic shots for you if you decide to make something else.

  19. I am kind of inbetween all this. I find a lot of the critique very understandable. At the same time I dont like the hostile tone in many of them. I read bad things and agree with them, those with understanding of this software and take a calm subjective analyse of it I totaly respect. The hostile ED need to get punished posts and siding to any part in juridical issues I find rather childish and barely read. When some from ED side answer, I find their answers very balanced and honest

  20. What means "godlike resolution" to you? With my RTX4080, OpenXR, DLAA and x1.3-x1.4 Q3 native resolution it is horrible. its so bad since the last six weeks. I even don´t Play DCS anymore just because of this mess and I went back to the other sim, where spotting is MUCH more realistic and doesn´t have any freaking dot(label) system. and yes @Tippis it is a forced on label system. To me it feels an behaves just like that. Whether its (wannabe) dynamic rendered and not meant to be an UI feature, or not. It is still an overlay in front of an otherwise "normally" rendered object. Call it what ever you want, but it is what it is.

  21. I recently started playing around with VPForce TelemFFB software from Walis. This software (which btw is also very nicely built, recommend anyone who want to have a look at it, or the VPForce manual) also feeds on DCS telemetry, and as per my test it systematically switches to pause ffb upon ejection, and hence stop all joystick rumble post ejection, allowing players to enjoy the scene and check what is going around without any annoying chaotic vibrations. I don t know exactly how it works under the hood, but i understand it is hence possible to get from telemetry that there has been an ejection and stop through software ffb response. I don t know if I will be able to get more information from debugging log, but it would be fantastic if it could be replicated for Simshaker. Many thanks in advance for looking at it, if you can.

24. Yes, it would be much better if it behaved like the pilot models in other aircraft. It's never been explained why this is intended behaviour. Why is it different to the way it's done in other modules? It's very immersion breaking if you lean forward or lean you head outside an open cockpit door and leave your head behind! The whole point of a pilot model in VR is to increase immersion, is it not? On the plus side. If you bail and decide to go for a walk about (I haven't tried it in the Apache), I'm guessing that unlike other pilot models your shadow will have a head!

  25. TBH, if you see something like this [Quote] We do not have time to read through a 30 post thread of two people arguing why something is bad, in fact most times we will just read the first post for the idea and move on from there [End Quote] in the byline for a wish/suggestions forum you know that there's something deeply wrong with how that company views their customers. At least they are honest (or callous) enough to admit that they mainly are annoyed if customer presume to propose, or discuss, ideas. It seems that they cannot be bothered to look at what their customers take time to write. From that I derive that at this juncture ED seemingly have little intention (or need) to mine ideas nor gauge feedback. Methinks experience shows that it's also one of the hallmarks of a company with dysfunctional communication skills. The good news is that ED have a lot of headroom here should they want to improve.

  31. I totally get the arguement (observation) regarding monetizing the time and effort required to improve the ATC and I had mentioned that I suspect this is a very likely cause for the lack of progress. As I said, if ATC was a paid module I've no doubt whatsoever we would already have it available. What gets my goat is being told its WIP (for over 10 years now) when clearly its not. Yeah maybe one of the team has done a little research, spent a couple of hours giving it some thought, maybe sketched out all the issues and whats needed on the back of a fag packet but to suggest this represents WIP is disingenuous at best. It would have been far better for me personally if ED had just rolled out Kate, Nick or Wags years ago to say - "look, ATC is not a priority for us and therefore not part of our development roadmap presently" And just to cover the comparison debate. Absolutely comparisons will be drawn. Its silly to think any software which essentially do the same thing (such as flight simulation) won't draw comparisons - about the only significent factor is age (it wouldnt be fair to compare the DCS Apache to Microsoft Gunship for example given the passing of time and tech progress) Yet despite all I now know, I still find myself looking forward to every Friday update in the hope of some ATC news!! - I literally must be mad. Regards, Gary

  32. Speaking of helicopters, I feel like DCS is sorely lacking in helicopters, particularly when it comes to European types like the NH90, Eurocopter Tiger, Westland Lynx, Eurocopter EC-145, AS365 Dauphin, AgustaWestland AW101, and many, many, more. However, since we're talking about American helicopters, it's worth noting that the MH-60R is still around and available for download on the UH-60L Discord server, but the types I'd like to bring up are the UH-1Y Venom/Super Huey, AH-1Z Viper/Zulu Cobra, and even something like the MQ-8B/C Fire Scout and UH-72 Lakota, which is a license-built derivative of the Eurocopter EC-145. 3D models are expensive, so I'll be finding time (and) funds to donate to Currenthill in the coming weeks and months. 33. In the '02-QWERTY_KB and Load Coordinates.lua' file, find the line with the 'local TICKS' variable right at the top of the file. Change the setting to '2' (without single-quotes) and try it. If it's still too fast, try '3'. I've never had to use anything higher than '2'.

  34. The HOBOS are broken in the current DCS version. The issue was fixed internally already, available with the next update. Cheers

  35. I believe that in an interview with ED (which I can't seem to find, so a suspect source) a spokesperson mentioned that MP makes up a sliver of some 10%-12% of the installed base. Let's turn this around: if DCS was primarily an MP game, it would look very, very different today, with MP-supporting features taking precedence over SP eye candy. If MP really was important, I think that there'd be much better support for MP, because business requires it (if you run a server or try scripting a server, you know what I mean). Currently it seems obvious to me that - due to ED's one-off sales model - selling (new) modules to SP is ED's business imperative; we get half-finished new stuff regularly, and infrastructure upgrades only when absolutely necessary. There is no way to directly monetize ATC (at least when contrasted to publishing a new module or map), so it won't receive much funding - if at all. Talking about it is cheap, so we'll likely receive the occasional "status update". But the one-off sales model seems to serve ED well, and until that changes there's little impetus to upgrade the infrastructure. I sincerely doubt that we'll see passable ATC unless ED's business model changes. ED may talk about it, sure. Just like they talk about a "Dynamic Campaign" or a damage model for the Yak (published as EA in 2018, still EA today, still a bad joke). Yeah, pull the other one. What really adds insult to injury is that all of these come as well-defined, well documented FSM, and the only challenge in putting them into a game are some possible edge-case state transitions that can easily be overcome by state resets. It's not a difficult proposal at all, merely something that requires work. Work, however, that can't well be monetized. Nobody plays DCS for the great ATC experience (and I wager the same holds true for the other FS). Everyone plays DCS for their modules (be it Hornet, Tomcat, Hog or any of the other great stuff). So ATC gets the shaft. Sad, but something I'm trying to live with. Currently, I'd even advocate that ED remove "ATC" altogether, it's in such an abysmal state that it would be better not to put a lantern on it. So, realistically, the sad truth is that we won't see ATC in DCS anytime soon. I play DCS for the fun it gives me now, not for the hopes I have what it may bring me in the future. And since this is a wish list item, yeah, ATC is very high on it for me. And my goddaughter is wishing for pony this xmas...

  39. @Gil80 Please try "Terrain Textures" at LOW and "Terrain Shadows" at OFF. That will imediately aleviate things a bit. DCS has three major problems (among others, I presume) for a long time now, still to be addressed: 1) The clouds system, how they're rendered - comparing Clouds setting "LOW" and "ULTRA", imediately one notices a considerable performance difference. Maybe also try Clouds at "LOW" see if it helps? Anything above "Standard" is a no-no for VR. (and I don't care if those contradicting have a NASA system, it shouldn't be like that) One of the main reasons for so many disgruntled VR users when version 2.7 came out (when the new clouds were introduced), still to be addressed. 2) The shadows for terrain objects are also a problem because, while it "beautifies" the image at distance, it does put a heavy toll on the hardware - even if set at "Flat". Shadows are still intensive tasks in any game, and in DCS with them at such long distances, for a gazillion of trees, bushes and etc, it can be a problem. If you're one of those that "can not live without Terrain Shadows!" then all I can suggest is the Shadows mod in my signature (it may or not help, do not hope for a miracle). 3) The exaggerated usage of high res formats in textures. @The_Nephilim is right in that, reducing textures settings does help in VR, even if you have 16GB VRAM. It is so, because too many are too big, and how often DCS swaps. Most of the textures are stored in compressed .ZIP format. The bigger the texture size, the longer DCS will take to extract from the .ZIP file and then swap, for Core, Modules and Maps. In VR the issue gets even more exarcebated because every little tiny wee I/O interference is imediately noticed, more so than in 2D. So, for the Maps, and because these have their own separate "LOW" textures (Core and Modules do not, they use single set), it instantly helps. After over four years with this issue exposed in these forums inumerous times, I start losing hope that a fix for this will come. Taz presented a solution but isn't maintaining it anymore, unfortunately. His mod is/was an absolute must (yes, it did/does break IC for those focusing in MultiPlayer):

  40. Heatblur Cold War server. Today. Map Syria We fly with GCI - our own. -12-o clock 10 nm Viggen -no joy -6 nm directly in front of you I zoom in zoom out -3 nm! Then I see him. 9 O'clock shadow in 300 yards range. It's pure desperation. Tomorrow I shut down all extra terrain features. maybe it will help? It's not that dot is too small or too big. Problem is that the dot is not there at all. Can we please have DCS 2.5 again? I tried literally all possible settings. Result is always the same. Empty server 1 vs 1 , 2 vs 2 - contacts are perfectly fine. About 16nm Range. Big server , many objects - nothing is visible.

  42. This. What I'm seeing now is that the world (generally speaking) is shifting direction. In many places, it's the first time in over 100 years where the latest generation has it harder than previous generations with income and living expenses, and the next generation after will probably have it harder again due to incredible debt many nations are in. This doesn't just traverse to sales - this also traverses to enthusiasm. Less disposable income also normally equates to having to work harder, and having less disposable time. Where people in the past have had ample of both, 'putting up' with bugs, and extra time to work around them, I think that the walls are going to slowly, but surely close in on this. People are going to just want to sit down and relax with something that distracts them from their problems and hard times, to something that 'just works'. To escape from the grind, problems that life brings. As such, I suspect people will start avoiding more things that introduce new problems and hurdles to overcome. This won't be everyone, but I do believe there is going to be a trend in this direction. I know even in my own life, even though I'm fortunate enough to maintain a comfortable amount of disposable income at the moment compared to many around me - I'm working harder, are more tired than normal, and have less patience to put up with bugs. I'm seeing many friends drop off from DCS completely due to lack of enthusiasm (largely caused by bugs), plus dealing with many bugs myself - has found myself playing DCS maybe a quarter (if lucky) compared to what I used to. With stable release now gone (let's face it... what we have even though it was supposed to be the destruction of Open Beta leaving Stable behind), is really Open Beta, with Stable release gone - so gone with it seems any chance of having something more stable. But we also need to be realistic. Bugs will come. This needs to be accepted. However - I perceive ED's attitudes to the bugs it's introduce is going to get DCS into far more trouble than they expect. What we're seeing with video's and youtube comments at the moment is a significant warning. I'm already at a stage where I have no desire for ED's maps anymore - focusing only on 3rd party - because I feel as though if 3rd party introduce bugs, they will attend to it much faster than what ED does, and as much as I love DCS and want it to thrive, rumors that I dismissed earlier I'm beginning to question if there's substance. I've been told that with marriage, often the problem isn't when a couple fight - it's when they stop fighting. Councellors tell me that there's a good chance to save a marriage with fighting couples. But once couples get to a stage where they've stopped fighting and no longer have the effort/energy/care - it can be near impossible to save the marriage. If so, the good news (at present) - is it seems even though many people are very upset - they are still passionate - passionate enough about DCS to care enough to make video's, write blasting comments on trailer video's, or writing stuff here. However - I do fear that the next step (if unresolved) will be people not caring anymore... and that's when the comments, video's, etc will just stop. It's then that this issue will become irreversible, and I don't know how close that is, but feel it's close. So while bug free expectations isn't realistic, stamping on those bugs as soon as they've been made is critical. This whole waiting 2+ years for bugs to be fixed needs to stop. Failure to address this I think will have significant and irreversible effects on the long term success of DCS. It really feels like now is a pivotal 'making or breaking' of DCS's future. I'm hoping with all the enthusiasm I can muster that the last 2 major updates (that were filled with 'fixed' is a sign that ED is changing direction, and not just a momentary gesture to try and appease customers.
