Just to avoid any confusion about FPS. I Read something about the Main-Rotor is much too high poly Please keep in mind that that effect results in baking the High-Poly mesh on the Low Poly one. It may look like killing FPSs, but that's just a game on tricking the eyes. The Normal Maps are overriding the hard edges6 points

Yes, hence why the maxim of "everything is subject to change" is bandied about with such frequency in these circles. And a few have disappeared, but those what disappear usually have dozens of red flags or never get the sign off by ED to begin with. Plus, if they never come out? You didn't part with money for it. I mean, unless you pre-ordered the P-40F from VEAO. Sympathies if that is the case. But, I fail to see how that's relevant in regards to the F-4 Phantom by Heatblur. We're talking about a developer who has multiple releases. Delays happen, they honestly do. As I said, never believe in a release window unless it's pretty specific instead of something as vague as a year. Why they haven't made a statement about it, yet? I can't say. Probably because it'd just confirm what we already know, really. At any rate, I'd rather F-4E drop in 2023 than get another F-16 release debacle.4 points

It's a millimetre wave radar which, without getting too technical, means it has much higher resolution than a typical airborne radar, but also shorter range. To identify targets such radars are using a database of return signatures of certain vehicle types, and matching target returns against that. Most such databases would use key features the radar could pick out, such a gun barrels, the outline/profile of the vehicle, tracks, etc The range of the version we are getting should be 8km.4 points

I asked my brother about this, who has around 500hrs on the Viper and this was his reply. "The real F-16 has no adverse aileron yaw worth mentioning in any symmetrical configuration. It has a computer specifically designed to keep the pointy end forward, and it does it quite well. It should roll around the velocity vector and the FLCS should do everything needed to keep the ball centered while it's doing it. While the FLCS does function differently in landing gains the ARI is still functional and should null all unwanted yaw and/or sideslip." Please bring this up to your SMEs.4 points

Exactly this. Such a major change will need thorough testing and I wouldn't be too surprised, if it takes a couple iterations in Openbeta to go through that transition. We need to manage our expectations. Fingers crossed. It is definitely a major change to a better ressource usage, but at the same time a massive change to the core of DCS. Looking forward to this, though. It is the way DCS needs to go and keep up with the hardware. Thanks for the info and heads up.3 points

I hear you. I really, really enjoy the Jeff and also wonder why more don’t give it a shot. The goal for the real Jf-17 was for a much less expensive replacement to the F-16 that roughly mimic’s the Falcon’s performance and capabilities. They succeeded. Ultimately it’s less capable than a modern F-16, but keep in mind the Falcon has been steadily developed since the 1970’s. I think the capability/performance deficiencies compared to the Falcon are on the margins, particularly for our game. I ‘argue’ the Jeff is one of the most complete, polished fully released jet modules out there, if not the most complete. I have a lot of fun with it and find it’s quirks part of its personality. It’s not for everyone, but I love it.2 points

Can this be elaborated on? Specifically, the bolded part, does this mean it's not true multithreaded physics and rendering? This statement implies all you did was to split off rendering and physics onto their own threads, with both systems remaining serialized and bound to a single core, just now independent of one another. This is progress, but much less than I hoped for, especially after such a long time. Now, I know even this is a big job starting out from thoroughly singlethreaded code, but DCS can't afford to stop there. Modern CPUs have 8 cores to work with, top end ones have 16 and even my ancient 4770 has four. That won't make DCS use 100% of my CPU, just 50% instead of 25%, possibly a bit more if the thread where everything else sits starts doing stuff. In 2023, it's not enough. Three threads (four if you count audio, which really isn't any kind of bottleneck) is only acceptable as a stepping stone toward a truly scalable, parallelized architecture. The reason is, physics dictate that without extreme cooling solutions or a technological revolution on par with invention of the microchip, single core CPU performance will not significantly improve (unless water cooling becomes standard, without OC they likely won't breach 6GHz). Any further visual improvements will degrade performance, as will the advance of display technology, unless advantage can be taken of a rising number of cores. So this is a must.2 points

Get the best VR HMD that you can afford. You want one that is capable of the highest possible native resolution your money can buy because you can always "de-tune" the graphics settings to match your hardware. If you get one with a lower native resolution, you end up having to use more and more supersampling to make it look decent, and the whole supersampling process is the biggest performance killer for any headset/GPU/CPU combination.2 points

Fun fact, the APG-73 was given a lot more processing (and room for more processor cards) than needed in order to support a future swap to an AESA that would replace the APG-65 planer slotted waveguide array that was still utilized by the APG-73. (ie the AESA upgrade would only swap out the antenna and still use the radar processing from the APG-73) Though the Navy never did upgrade the F/A-18Cs with a 'front-end' AESA. Instead, the Super Hornets got the fully kitted APG-79 AESA.2 points

Nb. that DCS also doesn't model the change in Isp based on atmospheric pressure at all. While a typical missile has a nozzle that's optimized for low altitudes (and thus with a relatively low spread between the sea level ISP and the vacuum ISP), there's still probably a 7% or so difference between a sea level shot and a 35k foot shot that Heatblur can't do anything about, with the difference being a bit more for a higher shot, if we use other SL-optimized solid rocket motors with similar propellant chemistry and known characteristics as a model. I'm guessing the Isp used in the in-game model is correct for intermediate altitudes, causing the thrust to be slightly higher than it should be for the portion of the motor burn that occurse down low and slightly lower than it should be way up high, bounding the worst-case error, but I'm obviously not privy to that. Another oddity: do the Mk47 Mod 0 and Mk47 Mod 1 really have the same Isp and total impulse despite having different propellant chemistry? The whitepaper (I know, I know, it's "no longer operative" and whatnot) claimed the Mod 1 had a higher Isp and thrust, the previous in-game model had the Mod 1 with *lower* Isp and thrust, the current in-game model has the Mod 1 and Mod 0 with the same Isp and thrust (unless I'm missing something in the files, in which case please correct me). It's probably a marginal difference, but it seems really odd that a change to a propellant with a different energy density wouldn't change the total impulse.2 points

All, I redid the sketch from scratch today, starting with a blank sketch and copying across code from working sketches and then splicing in the relevant DSC Bios lines. It works, so all I can surmise is that there is something corrupted in the original sketch. I had a similar issue with an altimeter sketch a few days ago, where it just stopped working. Luckily the code was copied in notepad++ so I used that as a backup. However no matter how hard I looked I couldn't see what the difference between the two sketches were. It also reminded me of when RS485 stopped working, and it turned out it was a glitch with the Arduino IDE So, a couple of lessons learnt, 1) back up any working sketches, and 2) just because you can't see anything wrong with the sketch doesn't mean that you shouldn't suspect it! Hope this helps someone Les2 points

Since it hasn't been fixed yet, I wonder if there is a way to get rid of those clouds. Not all of them behave like this. I'm flying an excellent and stunningly beautiful campaign. Those shimmering clouds are impossible to ignore. -Ruining a huge part of the experience, and reducing the value of my investments significantly. (Fanbois will fan)2 points

Dear ED when will see implementation of wet runway surfaces to correlate with rain. The renditions of rain on runway surfaces in MSFS is very impressive. The Supercarriers decks looks excellent in rain so when can we expect the same implementation to general runway/paved surfaces? BTW fantastic V2.8 many thanks1 point

Yes. That's good. But my point is that 'mission1.miz' as the file name shouldn't be in the 'File name:' dialog box, because the mission editor gave you a new mission file name when you created the new mission. It's THAT NEW NAME that should be inside that box, not the name of the mission file you had PREVIOUSLY loaded before you created a new mission. I agree the location of the save dialog should be the same, but not putting in the wrong name in the File name: box.1 point

Yes, there is a solution for this. My controller was working with independent axis on the triggers since the day I bought it. Then one day, it all of a sudden went to a single "split axis" setup after a Windows Update or something. After doing much research, I found the answer... https://www.reddit.com/r/xbox/comments/qer8pv/xbox_controller_right_and_left_trigger_merged/ The old HID driver for the controller was 2-axis, then Microsoft pushed an updated XINPUT driver that changed the behavior of the triggers to be a single split-axis. You need to reinstall the driver for the controller from Device Manager, and when picking from the list, select the old "HID-compliant Game Controller" driver. Then you can map them as different functions with Joystick Gremlin, etc.1 point

Its not being "Pessimism for the sake of pessimism". There is a track record of this happening on DCS over the years...How many aircraft have been in development with promises of a soon release that just vanish and are never seen or heard from again? And just because HB seems to be more together than some developers dose not make them immune from such things...I truly hope that it is released soon and maybe it will be .However, I see zero evidence that is the case and even at the start of when they made the announcement nearly a year ago there was nothing to show where things stood or at what stage things were at. I understand world events did throw a huge wrench in their plans if indeed their 2022 release date was truly a real thing but making expectations and then leaving people in the dark is not the way I would do things....Thats just the way I see it any time now in the next few weeks we will hopefully know one way or the other. If they hold to their word about at least making a official statement.1 point

Hi @BIGNEWY It's difficult to find direct proper evidence, but I actually got some info that might be useful. In the TAC-000 Harrier manual, which share many commonalities with the Hornet avionics, it explains in detail what happen when STEP is pressed. The Maverick circuitry is reset and the camera is boresighted, cancelling any lock that the missile may have at that point. This is the current behavior of our hornet, so I would lend to think that current implementation is right and the F-16 may have some additional circuitry in the store management system to keep two missiles locked at the same time. In fact, the manual also adds that the QTY value has no effect, and the missile can only be launched single Best regards1 point

Might be off topic, but I didnt think the Phantom ever had a Launchbar. I thought it had a Bridal system for its entire life. I could be wrong for the S/N as my knowledge of them is limited. The E is missing those Bridal connection points. But for the sake of the game and implementation I dont see a problem with a stand in "Carrier Launch System" that just makes it compatible with existing carriers, but I dont think that would be a critical path to release.1 point
