A quick update: As for the winter textures, there's no way I can make the map covered with snow without developer tools. What I will try to achieve is something like late autumn/early winter with some snow patches here and there - but that's still weeks ahead.11 points

It's only been 2 months since the start of pre-order, when they said the release would be a 'few' months away. I really don't understand how people are getting so annoyed and upset....6 points

What percentage of the population is clamoring for a study-level F15E? It's a tiny niche market that the big game developers wouldn't touch with a 100-foot pole. I'm just grateful as hell that someone has actually gone through the trouble and tedium to make one, and as a software dev myself, could imagine 1,000 last-minute things that could come up and derail a scheduled launch. It's an incredibly-complex project. I'm impatient too, and want this thing yesterday, but I'm so grateful that they're even making it, that you would never be able to convince me to criticize them. RAZBAM does good work, and good work is rarely timely work in software. I take the slips as an indication that they care about releasing a quality product. I'm sure they want it released every bit as much as we do, and they are just as, if not more disappointed, when it doesn't happen when scheduled. Cut them some slack, IMHO, and be happy that it's coming relatively soon .... even if we don't know precisely when. I mean, I always wanted a Hi-Fi F15, and mulled over my two options: 1) Spend 200,00 man-hours writing the code and creating the images 2) Plunk down $60 and have someone else do it for me It was a tough decision, but after weighing all sides, I went with #2. I don't know how demanding I can reasonably be about it, though.5 points

I just finished today Beware! Beware! Since it was a great experience I'd like to give you a sum up (for anyone who hasn't finished it this will contain spoilers ) Also english is not my first language so I hope everyone will forgive me if the tale won't flow as I'd like. I've had the spitfire for quite some time but never really digged into it, some instant actions, a few missions of the epsom campaign but nothing more. Then I saw your video about the 3 spitfire campaigns played in progression, and you really got me into trying; watched your tutorials (among the best I've ever seen), flew a few cold start flights to feel somewhat confident in the machine, read the documentation and finally started. I'm a pilot myself, nothing as fancy as a fast high performance fighter, just a crwoded bus with a big autopilot button, but still I thought I knew how to handle this the right way, cautiosly, studying and not rushing it, and as with some helpful background. The first mission went like a breeze, once you understand how to handle the spit (again thanks to your tutorials), takeoffs and landings are quite easy. Now the first sortie was another thing; staying in formation while managing the engine and looking around is an extremely exhausting task, the engine is what worried me the most, having experienced engine breakdowns before in the spit, squeezing the engine was quite scary at the start for me, I think I gave full throttle for the first time after at least 6 sorties. The first fight was a disaster, I tried to cover my lead and doing so I never checked my six, result? lots of angry german bullets opened a hole in my wing and shredded my tail, a few tight turns and straight for the sea, lets live to fight another day, the damaged tail jammed the elevator preventing smooth movement, the flight back was a nightmare but eventually crossed the coast, I miracously landed at Lympne, repair, refuel and came back home. Lesson learned, watch your six, always. The first seven sorties were quite straightforward, I lerned to watch more my six than my 12, even if it means to lose your leader sometimes (of course you're not supposed to, but better to lose him than die), I started getting my first kills (aiming in a turn with that bulky nose is very hard so most of my ammo was wasted) and on sortie 3 I got my wing peppered by another spitfire. The photoshoot and the christmas mission were great, even though I can't understand I only got 80% score in the photoshoot. And now to the inteesting part: the second half has more diversity, and you are not a wingman anymore! I started feeling really confident, not being afraid of the engine, using every drop of power when needed, arriving fast, striking with short but deadly bursts and running away. By now I was bagging 1/2 kills per sortie, without exposing myself to danger and never getting hit or even attacked. The intercept mission was briliant, just one suggestion if I may: for non native speaker, or at least for me, following the dialogue of the interview with no subtitles was quite hard. Sortie 11 brought me a bit back to earth again, those huns not only killed my leader without me spotting them, but put a good deal of holes in my fuselage as well, eventually we sent them in the drink and managed to go back home. Sortie 13: here the disappointment comes. Usual sortie, climbing to 34k is not a big deal now that I can use the engine, formation flying it's a breeze, takes attention but surely not sweating anymore. Bandits again, a good chance to take home the last kills before the campaign is over, lets dive on them! Perfect a 190 is right in front, slow, I am gaining fast, this is gonna be easy, just pull some more, and some more, the vision is greying out, I could release the pressure and try another pass, but I'm greedy, I want this kill now, ... and it goes to black, I am powerless now, and feel like an idiot. The unfortunate pilot will never wake up, the plane was too fast and the ground too close. Of course this is just a game, but still it managed to upset me, I was trying my hardest too survive this campaign until arrogance got the best of me, and I think this might unfortunately have tricked quite some real aviators too, it surely did in the civilian world at least. The real journey ends here. Two famouse sayings come to mind now: Remember, in a plane you're always a student. And by now I definetely wasn't on this mood anymore Learn from the mistakes of others, brcause you're not gonna be lucky enough to do all those yourself. And luck did surely run out. I flew the mission again after a few days, survived the dogfight, got hit by flak on the way back, became a glider in the middle of the channel and got picked up by a walrus. Fate wasn't with me on this sortie I guess, it's no.13 after all. Finished the 14 sorties in the end and anjoyed every bit of it, so thank you for this amazing experience, now I need to decide If to fly V for Victory or Jagdflieger first, but I think the 109 will win.4 points

Thank you so much for such a detailed and elaborate feedback. I loved reading every word because they matched exactly the experience and thoughts of real life WW2 pilots that I've read in memoires - this means that my mission is complete, I achieved what I wanted. It's amazing how many things can kill you, isn't it? And once you get the hang of it and start getting kills, it's even more difficult to consciously pay attention to everything - instead of getting a little 'John Wayne' - and that's when it happens, when you least expect it. All real life pilots have a story where they should have died but they didn't because of an incredible stroke of luck, and then they learned, and lived to tell the tale.4 points

Bump for this 10.2 GB DCS Optimized Textures Mod! DCS Open Beta Folder is 17GB lighter with Optimized textures installed. @BIGNEWY, it would be a shame if the developers were not at least studying the changes provided in this mod and considering implementing some or all in a future "major" update. (For example - when Vulcan API is ready for Open Beta ) On an interesting side note: Installing this 10.2 GB Textures Mod on my 2TB Samsung NVME 970 EVO helped me to realize that I was missing the installation of Samsung NVME Express Driver 3.3. My computer was crashing and rebooting when pushing the NVME hard during heavy usage. During troubleshooting the drive would also crash running the Drive Magician Diagnostics tests. Thanks, @Taz10043 points

I really think this is the closest we can get to an authentic ww2 experience. I would like to add two advices for those who are gonna play this campaign that I feel enhanced my experience by a lot. let this be the only campaign you fly for now, don’t jump from plane to plane, era to era, enjoy the spit for the duration of the campaign, let yourself be absorbed by it, learn everything there is to know. This is your plane now. And don’t use tacview, the action was confused and you didn’t understand what happened? Great, they probably were confused and didn’t understand what happened as well.3 points

Not sure you know what 'few' means. It's usually more than 2 They're clearly working on it, the longer they spend on it the better it will be, and I don't think any of us are short of other things to do while we wait.3 points

It was mentioned few times later too that the date of release of EA will be given before the end of pre order. So no one will be surprised. The other thing is that ED, as far as I know, is not testing it yet (which may take a month or more), so... I wouldn't expect it soon. However, Im realistically betting on the holiday period, although I thought it would be May earlier.3 points
-
That is ridiculous. If that were the case, they would NEVER announce a date. Otherwise, something unforeseen could always happen and delay it. This clearly is not the case, as they always give notice of the date so people can buy at the pre-order discount. Because in December 2022, they said the release was "imminent". Then, when EA was announced, they said a "few months" away and likely sooner. I'm surprised you're surprised.3 points

They apparently have a date. Why they wouldn't reveal it in this Friday's newsletter is beyond me. I agree...its getting old.3 points

On the offchance anybody is interested, my flight was today. Lot of fun, very noisy. Radio wasn't plugged in, so we couldn't communicate (unfortunately costing me an opportunity to take the controls) but was a great day. It was way louder than I expected, very glad for the headphones. Erik Johnston was there so it is likely the takeoff and landing was recorded. -edit Cockpit upload It's a bit cramped in there so I had trouble taking photos properly -edit update for history This plane was built in Grand Prairie, TX in 1943, was based at Avenger Field and utilised by WASP among others, at least some of whom went on to fly/ride in the plane again in modern times 60-70 years later. So it's a proper ''active duty WWII plane'' although it was not deployed overseas, being a trainer.2 points

Currently a lot of servers have/are adding logistics play but short of using the cargo rope system, you can't see any cargo in back. It would be much more immersive to at least have some static pallet, bladder, and vehicle objects that can be loaded and having some way of organizing them such that the pilot has some way of choosing how much weight to carry and knowledge of what that cargo weight is and its distribution.2 points

Its probably about psychology. Landing an aircraft on a carrier is a highly stressful job, so some rules you really wanna beat those rules into pilots heads. If a pilot remembers "You dont have to flare" means he has to make a mental decision, when its "you never flare", then he doesnt even have to think about it and just does it. Seems to be a general logic behind military drills? Teach people certain actions to do under stress without thinking. Because under stress your ability to make decisions degrades, slows you down, and add to the stress. Also goes into the "train how you fight" thing. If you trained to flare on a runway, and dont on a carrier, its hard to make the switch. But no, there is no technical reason, and keeping airframes in good shape is indeed an important part of the job of a pilots job. The US navy is actually very concerned about airframe-lifetime, which is likely why the F-14 got its G-limit reduced to 6.5 (though they were allowed to over-g in combat), despite being an incredibly tough aircraft by most accounts, moreso than F-15s. And why the F-18 has a more aggressive and universal G-limiter than many other planes. Probably part of why the F-35 B+C is lower G than the A, besides weight reasons. Compared, Yet when it comes to carrier landings, the Navy didnt compromise and has its pilots never flare. Its just too risky to do otherwise, I suppose. Just imagine landing an aircraft while the carrier is engaged in combat scenarios, maybe even with minor battle damage, that must be insanely stressfull!2 points

Nice work - look forward to it but...are you going to darken the forest background for a darker texture? The most noticeable thing that was 'wrong' about this map is that the underlying texture is too light and not realistic. Woods/forests are generally dark beneath the canopy especially in summer. I immediately edited the texture myself and am much happier with the look, being a native of this region. The texture is used a lot on this map so that one change made the map look a lot different, more lush with roads and river valleys better contrasted. I actually quite like it - it's definitely more like home!2 points

steam is not behide but rather a human error they forget update the steam app launcher info. bin-mt is already there. steam fetch the option then stored in appinfo.vdf appinfo.vdf governors the executable path and args. and it updates every single time when steam launches. Steam cant excute different binary w/o fallingback to default one. And ED drm prevent any executable swap, so swap bin-mt and bin folder wont work so at aleast current ob is same as stable. switch to ob if you want use bin-mt version ED please fix this?2 points

Please don't do that. That's often considered rude and a breach of etiquette, since when people respond to your post, and you change your original post after a response, it breaks context. You didn't just correct some spelling, you fundamentally changed the direction of your post. I no longer feel inclined to discuss this topic with you.2 points

I'm waiting for a few parts that I sent out to make for the pedals that are too big to make at home, so I turned my attention to the UHF radio panel to keep me moving forward You will see in a separate thread that I had a bit of a song and dance getting the larger of the to OLED panels to display correctly, but with Vinc and Outbaxx's help I managed to get it up and running fine. In the end I opted to split the displays over two Nano boards as I needed the extra pins anyway for all the rotary encoders and switches. I have a 3D printed load cover assembly to add to it, though I don't think that I will be making it a switched part, at least not in this iteration. It's a level of complexity that I think is unnecessary for my use. The OLED displays look a bit blurry in this picture, not sure why, but in real life they are very sharp and clear. I will probably play with the frequency font size to reduce it by a pixel or two in height so that it has a bit more border around it. Unfortunately u8g2 doesn't have the ability to scale fonts which would have made this more easy, but it's not a huge task to make a new font once you have been shown how Also, looking at those 3D printed knobs, they are unpainted but I think I need to paint them a darker shade of grey; they look a bit toy like Cheers Les2 points

it looks correct to me. we had the open beta update to DCS 2.8.4.39731 on the 4th and then stable was patched on the 5th to match open beta DCS 2.8.4.397312 points

Maybe a important find vor VR Users (G2) who want to try the mod. I did some more testing in VR because a friend reported not seeing ridiculously big dots that i do in VR with the G2 despite using nearly identical settings (100%, PD 1.0) except 2D Resolution. The dot size in VR seems to depend on the setting "Resolution" for the 2D Resolution and the state of the VR Mirror Window. 1) System Options - Resolution. Set to e.g. 1280x1024. Maybe smaller than 1920 x 1080 works. AND 2) VR - VR Mirror Options - USE DCS System Resolution set to ON 3) Restart DCS - Mirror should start in a bordered Window on the Desktop With 3440x1440 i get big dots. With 1280x800 i get smaller dots in VR. And mod is usable. Maybe the 2D Resolution - of the VR Mirror? - is relevant here. Couldn't test more, but for me it only works when DCS starts in a small bordered window after setting 2) which is why i recommend the manual restart of DCS. Only after manual restart DCS started reliably in a window on my system. Maybe because i still had set "Fullscreen" in System Options...2 points

Very nice when tested using Warbirds and dog fights. Giving this thread a bump for the weekend. More users should try the Improved Dots Mod and vote. The poll Results from at least 1000 could help ED prioritize.2 points

My mounts arrived this morning. Shipping was very fast, overnight. I haven't had a chance to try them out yet but I couldn't resist assembling them during my lunchtime to see how they looked, It took me about 30mins. They were packaged very well inside purpose cut foam and seem of a very good quality. All the screws you need are provided, including some spares and an allen key. The only thing you might need is a Phillips head screwdriver if you use the provided screws for mounting your joystick. All the other screws use the provided allen key. I bought it for a WinWing Orion 2 HOTAS. I went from some custom made mounts on an IKEA POANG chair to these. I've also just switched from using a T16000 Thrustmaster throttle and a VKB Gladiator stick to the WinWing HOTAS, so it's going to take some getting used to, but so far I like having the throttle and stick at a more natural, comfortable height and the stick centre mounted. I found the WinWing gear was higher, compared to my T16000 and VKB on the chair mount (the T16000M throttle in particular was much lower) and therefore less comfortable, that's why I decided to switch to desk mounts. I did used to enjoy the laid-back seating and side stick mount of my POANG chair so it will take some adjusting to the upright desk seating. As I say, I haven't tried it in anger yet, so I'll see how that goes, but it does feel very solid on the desk. The only movement I could see when I waggled the stick was in the desk itself. The mounts are sturdier than the desk. The advantage of my custom side chair mount was it was solid and didn't move at all. I think I'll remove the arms from the chair too to give easier access to the throttle. I haven't fine tuned the positions yet, I've just 'thrown' them on to see how it looks. It might be better if the chair has a swivel lock too, so I don't accidently spin round and knock them off! Overall I'd say initial impressions are of good quality, solid desk mounts. The jury's still out on whether I prefer this type of seating position but that's another story.. Here are a couple of before and after pics: null2 points

You can flare, it reduces the stress on the landing gear. Its just that it will also increase the runway length you need until you come to a full stop and the chance of doing mistakes in such a critical situation is of course much higher (pull up too early or to heavy and you crash). And the brakes are not really that strong, so there is a risk that you run out of runway and land in the grass. For a carrier landing, it means that you would likely miss the wires. It is much harder to aim your touchdown point if you perform a flare at the end. The landing gear is strong enough to land without a flare, so theres no need for it.2 points
-
There is no reason to flare, as you land on speed, that is by AOA, while in other aircraft you might not even think about your AOA (too much) - it ofc matters - which means you land already at the perfect combination of pitch angle and speed. You can see that how gently she touches down when you are on speed and below -500 FPM. Nothing prevents you from flaring btw, but it is more likely that you will screw up your on speed, and also she has a large rear. On a boat the on speed AOA additionaly provides the most favorable angle for the hook to grab the wire. Because landing on the boat is your primarily expected and perishable skill, doing it on land how you do it on the boat (including flying a Case I even if landing on land), is a good way to prevent said skill from perishing, too. Also: welcome to the forums! I hope you enjoy yourself here.2 points

That’s gonna be a very intersting part of my PTO campaigns. They just used a plotting board and followed their course closely. If you made it back close enough to the carrier you could pick up the YE-ZB signal2 points

There is no need for you to apologize. I know there was a link to a Twitter post. The point I was trying to make is that a picture of the manual's cover, with a link to the original post or not, is still just another commercial for the product. I was all excited when I saw your post. I thought we would be able to download an "early access" of the manual and began reading. In fairness, I am an old-fart who still reads rather than watches TV. I spent ten-years studying Dash-1's in the USAF. I am comfortable with a manual and can go at my old-fart's pace. Again, my comments are directed at Razbam and their endless carrot on a stick, not you. I appreciate your updates.2 points

@iQyThradz3137i This is what I did: In Livery description.lua you need to remove lines that start with "F18C_BORT_NUMBER_ and replace them with the new format: {"f18c1_number_nose_right", 0 ,"F18C_1_DIFF_323L",false}; {"f18c1_number_nose_right", ROUGHNESS_METALLIC ,"F18C_1_DIF_RoughMet",true}; {"f18c1_number_nose_right", DECAL ,"empty",false}; {"f18c1_number_nose_left", 0 ,"F18C_1_DIFF_323L",false}; {"f18c1_number_nose_left", ROUGHNESS_METALLIC ,"F18C_1_DIF_RoughMet",true}; {"f18c1_number_nose_left", DECAL ,"empty",false}; {"f18c2_kil_right", 0 ,"F18C_2_DIFF_323L",false}; {"f18c2_kil_right", ROUGHNESS_METALLIC ,"F18C_2_DIF_RoughMet",true}; {"f18c2_kil_right", DECAL ,"empty",true}; {"f18c2_kil_left", 0 ,"F18C_2_DIFF_323L",false}; {"f18c2_kil_left", ROUGHNESS_METALLIC ,"F18C_2_DIF_RoughMet",true}; {"f18c2_kil_left", DECAL ,"empty",true}; {"f18c1_number_F", 0 ,"F18C_1_DIFF_323L",false}; {"f18c1_number_F", ROUGHNESS_METALLIC ,"F18C_1_DIF_RoughMet",true}; {"f18c1_number_F", DECAL ,"empty",true}; {"f18c2_number_X", 0 ,"F18C_2_DIFF_323L",false}; {"f18c2_number_X", ROUGHNESS_METALLIC ,"F18C_2_DIF_RoughMet",true}; {"f18c2_number_X", DECAL ,"empty",true}; Then, at the end of file you need to include the custom arguments: custom_args = { [27] = 1, -- Tail change of type of board number (0.0 -default USA, 0.1- ) [1000] = 1, -- Flaps [1001] = 1, -- Nose [1002] = 1, -- Kuwait Squadron [1003] = 1, -- Australian Squadron [1004] = 1, -- Finland Squadron [1005] = 1, -- Switzerland Squadron [1006] = 1, -- Blue Angels Jet Team } If you want to show bort numbers, the line would be similar to this: {"f18c1_number_nose_right", DECAL ,"F18C_bort_number_PL",false}; and then custom args must be changed from 1 to 0.0 for example: [1000] = 0.0, -- Flaps [1001] = 0.0, -- Nose2 points

When there is a very important layer of cloud with only a few openings that let the light through... The rendering is quite strange seen from below. Ex: Screenshot below On those screenshot, if we look quickly, we have the illusion of having a clear blue sky with a few white clouds (this illusion is considerably reinforced if the quality of the shadows on the ground is reduced)... Then we actually realize that what we took for a blue sky is actually the underside of 'a thick layer of clouds, and what we thought was a white cloud is actually the opening to the sky. I think this illusion of inversion between the sky and the clouds is due to the fact that there is almost no texture on the underside of the clouds when they are in the dark, giving us the impression that there it's a blue sky. I don't think it would take much to break this illusion (A different management of shaders or occlusion, better textures, a less dense "blue fog", more contrast, that the underside of the clouds appears to us more "white" to look less like a blue sky... The solutions are not lacking! Currently, thick clouds are very beautiful and detailed from above, but not great with not much detail from below. Example : Contrast and small details remove any ambiguity2 points
