  2. Couldn't help it, since I made the M-ATV. Just to clarify, since the risk of (understandable) confusion is obvious. The last asset I released was the Oshkosh M-ATV MRAP, the one above is the lighter vehicle that won the JLTV program - Oshkosh L-ATV.

  4. Hi Ugra Media, thanks for taking the time to look at this "rivet counting for SAM Sites" Nerd's suggestion for improvements to the Homs SA-5 site. Here is a satellite image from the real life Homs SA-5 site. Each SA-5 site has a few distinct features to it: 1.) Barracks/Administration area 2.) Missile Maintenance (Syria open stores their SA-5's in the hot desert sun!) 3.) The Launch Complexes 4.) A P-14 "Tall King" search radar 5.) A PRV-13/PRV-17 Height Finding Radar 6.) A Square Pair Track radar per launch complex When we look at the real Homs site, there are some distinct differences between the DCS Homs site and the real life one. Below is a picture of Launch Complex 1 As you can see, there are six launcher positions and a single centrally mounted bunker. This bunker houses the launch control equipment for the SA-5 and generators. I've highlighted the entrance to the bunker in red. I've also highlighted the revetments around each launcher in yellow. Finally, there are six green lines which are the cable runs to each launcher from the bunker. When we look at the radar complex, you can see the three Square Pair radar locations. These presently are not modeled on our DCS Homs site. In fact, the height maps for the hills they are on are also missing. The control equipment for each of these radars is actually parked at the bottom of each elevated position. The northern most Square Pair is missing from this image because the third launch complex isn't presently complete in the picture. The PRV-13/PRV-17 Height Finder position is clearly marked but also missing the radar. You can clearly see the control and power bunker next to it. Here we are in DCS: Let's look at where the P-14 is at: With the P-14 we can clearly see the Tall King is on an elevated point with a power and control bunker next to it similar to how the PRV-13/PRV-17 is situated. Here it is in DCS: In Summary: To over simplify the heck out of this "problem", our current Homs SA-5 site suffers from a serious case of Bunker-itis! While having too many bunkers is certainly an issue, the biggest one for me is the radar positions simply don't exist. These positions would be elevated above the surrounding terrain to give clear pictures to the sky. Presently those elevated positions and bunkers simply don't exist! We are also missing all of the revetments around most of the launch complexes. I fully realize this is rivet counting for SAM sites, but when it impacts the ability of the site to function because the track radar is in a valley compared to the rest of the site, it's a bit hard to maintain my SAM Site rivet counting disability! In fairness to this site, it is not the ONLY site to suffer from these problems. There are several SA-2 sites and EWR sites which ALSO have Bunker-itis! I'll make a separate post about them specifically! At any rate, THANK YOU for taking the time to read this.

  5. By the way, I will probably be switching over to an other file share service shortly. I'm using Sync.com at the moment because of their unlimited bandwidth policy, but that doesn't do me any good when their download/upload speeds are getting amazingly poor. And it's getting worse, I just uploaded the latest asset at 2.5 Mbit/s. Which is pretty bad considering I'm using a 1/1 Gbit/s connection.

  11. I've read a great number of books from WW2 pilots of various Air Forces perspectives across many theatres and there's some general themes, some of which you may find surprising. 1. The weather may be bad but that would not necessarily scrub a mission - if cloud base was so low or if visibility was so bad at your home airfield that it was deemed unsafe to land 99% of missions would be scrubbed and you wouldn't take-off in the first place. That said, look to RAMROD 564 (Operation Jericho) where operational expediency overruled the blizzard conditions and it was assumed that the Wings Mosquitos would divert to RAF Ford for recovery. This was briefed. 2. Divert fields seem to have been a briefed item for bomber types but not so much for fighters. Fighters being more manoeuvrable and flexible in regards to the runway & visibility minima they can accept may have been deemed able to wing-it a bit more in this regard. 3. In fighters, an individual pilot's local knowledge, navigation skill and airmanship was leveraged far more than in modern aviation. The modern Safety First doctrines were just further down the priority list back then, and were based on a the experiences learned from WW2. If you got back to where your field was only to find it socked in then you had the following options: a) Crawl around at low level trying to catch glimpses of the ground - and maybe the airfield or a known landmark - in order to orient yourself for a very sketchy tight pattern and approach to your home airfield (see 'First Light' by Geoff Wellum, 'Sigh for Merlin' by Alex Henshaw or 'Spitfire: A Test Pilot's Story' by Jeffrey Quill), b) Know where the nearest airfields are and self divert to see if conditions are any better there, c) Climb out of the muck and if available contact the Ground Control agency to see if they can give you a steer to the nearest airfield with some vaguely landable climate! This of course relies on you having sufficient fuel; if you're already at Emergency Fuel status then a) and b) are your only recourse, unless you go with option d)... d) Get to a safe bail-out altitude and leave the plane.

  12. There are a few forks of HDSM which include some tweaks. For instance, here is one Recoil and I worked on to add the Tin Shield to the S-300PS, replaced the S-300PS 5V55R missile with the in game 5V55R missile (higher performance, better PK), and fixed the Grill Pan's non-working HARM and RWR code (now shows up as an SA-12 with 112 HARM code): https://github.com/Recoil016/HighDigitSAMs/releases/tag/v1.0.0 These issues have sat on the main fork for some time without any movement, so we forked it to make the changes.

  13. ED User Files Link: https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/3332398/ All missions take place in various regions of the Caucasus map. A series of quick missions (Most take 3-10 minutes, though 'Advanced' and 'Expert' missions may take longer), designed to help Strike Eagle pilots practice their systems workflow, refine their key binds and HOTAS controls, axis curves, and employment proficiency with a variety of both air-to-air and air-to-ground weapon systems, Air-to-Air refueling, as well as some more advanced scenario based training, that will test your flying abilities while expanding your skills. These are designed to be quick and hassle-free ways to practice selecting the weapon systems, picking your modes, options, ripple patterns, etc. in order to ingrain good muscle memory and habits so it becomes second nature when flying real missions. These are all copied and/or adapted for the F15E from my Viper practice & proficiency mission pack: https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/3328191/ If a mission has a live threat present, it will always be noted in the mission briefing. ******Important note: These are not tutorials. There are no step by step directions telling you how to sel ect and employ the systems required, or perform the assigned task. These are practice missions. A basic understanding of the jet is required. (Though they could be useful if you're following along with Tutorial videos or checklists.) Missions are broken down into 4 categories for easy navigation: - '.Basic': Essential skills for new pilots. Landing, formation flying, spotting, etc. - 'Weapons' - Threat free environments to practice weapons employment. The bedrock that this mission pack is built on. - 'Advanced' - Scenario-based training. Live threats present. Read all mission briefs in full. - 'Expert': - High level scenario-based missions. May contain multiple types of live threats and/or difficult flying conditions. Limited use of F10 and labels. Read mission briefs thoroughly. There is a briefing accompanying each mission letting you know your airspeed, altitude, situation and overall objective. The F10 map, Labels and Active Pause are available in all missions '***' will denote items from most recent update. Includes the following: Weapon systems: - AIM-9M Sidewinder - AIM-120C Amraam - CBU-87 - CBU-97 - GBU 10 & 12 (Single mission for both.) - GBU 24 - Mk 82 & Mk 84 Low drag bombs (single mission for both) - Mk 82 & Mk 84 High drag bombs (single mission for both) - Air to Air Guns Basic Skills: - Cold Start & Takeoff - Cold Start & Takeoff (Night) - Visual landing: clear day - Visual landing: Rain & Wind - Visual landing: Fog & low light - Visual landing: Night - Beginner Formation Flying - Air to Air Refueling (Easy comms, no external tanks) Advanced Skills: - Air to Air refueling (No F10, No labels, TACAN required, No easy comms) - Neutral BFM - Fox 2s - Neutral BFM - Guns only - Beyond Visual Range - AIM-120C - AWACS supported - Beyond Visual Range - AIM-120C - No AWACS Expert: - Fox 2 Unknown Adversary*** - Fox 3 & 1 Unknown Adversary*** ----------Next update planned: TBD----------- To install: Unzip folder and extract the Folder titled 'F15E Proficiency v1.X. Copy and paste to: Users -> *Your username folder* -> Saved Games -> DCS.openbeta (Or DCS if you're running stable version)-> Missions Then go to the 'Missions' tab on the main menu of DCS and at the top should be the folder containing all missions. 14. Hey folks! The SE is out, the F-4 looms just beyond the horizon. The long watch is almost over… Possibly. For this reason, I wanted to get a bit more familiar with the Phantom II, and I started with taking a look at the cockpits. The DCS F-4E is not out yet, the old screenshots from Belsimtek are not great, so I have found an alternative, and put together a quick video. Moving the first steps with a new aeroplane is never easy, especially if the game does not match either. I have used MilViz's F-4 for FSX, and this seems to be a DVST Phantom, whereas I am looking forward to the later upgrades, to fit in the best period DCS can imo replicate (late 70s, early 80s). Nevertheless, the difference should not be huge, and this is a good means of familiarising with the cockpit. I am sure there are errors in the video, as I am brand new to the Phantom and I have spent only a dozen hours studying the documentation. So, if you have observations, please do share them, and I will put the corrections in the comments. Thanks! UPDATE 10/07/2023: GUNS & SLATS The F-4E featured two peculiar upgrades that separate it from the predecessors and its Navy brothers: the presence of an internal gun, and the nre wing supporting leading-edge slats. UPDATE 14/07/2023: AIR-TO-AIR WEAPONS EMPLOYMENT An overview of the basic avionics and instrumentation required to employ AIM-7 Sparrow, AIM-9 Sidewinder and the M61A1 20mm Vulcan. UPDATE 23/07/2023: RADAR BASICS & CONTROLS The details of the Radar Set Control Panel, and the purpose of the instruments here installed. UPDATE 03/08/2023: RADAR QUIRKS & FEATURES A discussion about some cool features of the radar and avionics, such as the nutating antenna pattern, or the Computer Automatic Acquisition mode. UPDATE 17/08/2023: AIR-TO-AIR INTERCEPTS - THEORY A two-parts refresher on the basic concepts useful to intercept and engage a target with the F-4E Phantom II. This first video covers the theory. UPDATE 29/08/2023: AIR-TO-AIR INTERCEPTS - PRACTICE The second part of the Air-to-Air Intercepts sees some practical examples using the F-14's DDD B-Scope in Pulse mode.

  20. At 67 years of age I can't help to look at time in a more Short kind of way. 3 years is the Average life span of Most CPU's for Gaming Computers. I just updated mine. Most Motherboards and RAM will serve you on a Average of 10 years. Most GPU's will Average at 5 years. I just updated my GPU as well. In the "todays market" Value of your Money to purchase parts is getting to a point that you need a BIG investment to build or buy a computer for gaming today. How long with it last? Here in DCS I find myself asking myself how long will it take to see Vietnam and WWII Pacific DCS game Play and For Me (at 67) it ain't looking good. This brings me back around to your over 3 years since you made this thread. My Grandaughter turns 3 this month. Think about it when I built my first DCS Computer to play this Simulator It cam in at $1,200 if you want a top of the line rig to your GPU will run $1,200 to $1600 How long can this last? Will we still be playing in 10 years? Lol you may not know me or ever will but I was here in this time with you all and I had fun. So with luck you will last the test of time in DCS. Where will DCS World be in 30 Years?

  25. Thanks for pointing this out. As I mention, these are all copied/adapted from my F16 missions, and this is a Viper-specific feature, so disregard. I went through all the briefings to take this stuff out, but I guess I missed this one! Will be fixed ASAP. Just wait for the advanced and expert level AAR missions. Remember, the AAR mission is under the .Basic category, so it's as easy as AAR can get. The follow-on missions will be much more difficult.

  28. This is the first problem with anyone expecting to see DCS toss everything out and write new code. It would be prohibitively expensive to do this. The second issue is that it is wrong to assume new code will be more stable than old code. All that you can be sure is going to happen with new code is that you'll have a bunch of new stuff to debug.

  33. ....and on the graphics front, not that we'd want a direct comparison (entirely different genres) but the success of Battlebit shows you don't need absolute graphical fidelity to have a fun game. But that's not the purpose of what we're aiming for of course. A first person view is the just the building block of a LOT of other things. And it doesn't need to be a game mode by itself. It should just be to support what DCS is. That 'granularity' or 'small blade of grass' view is needed for the detail of helicopter/AFV operations. It wouldn't take much to provide basic 'human' movement to what is already in the game. Having your pilot walk is already there. He just needs to run/crouch/go prone, and move in a less ridiculous manner in general for Step 1.

  41. Hey everyone, quick update here for you. I was hoping to release Version 1.7 by the end of July, but obviously that didn't happen. I have some issues with missiles exploding on launch cropping up, and I'd really like to have better textures for the EPAWSS model. Unfortunately I'm not a very good texture artist, so if anyone is interested in helping with the textures, let me know. I can release the mod with a minor texture fix within the next couple of days, or I can try to get better textures and fix the missile launch issues, but obviously that will take more time. Let me know what you guys would like, release now or later.

  46. I understand what you are trying to say, however DCS is complex, and the complexity grows as time goes on, updates are made, new features are added, this cycle will continue. Starting from scratch would be just stupid at this point. To get to this level of simulation takes years of work. The code is complex, and as Kate once said spaghetti like, but code gets rewritten as needed. I know your "duck tape" comment is in jest, but DCS has never been more stable than it is now, the testing being done by volunteer closed testers and our QA has much improved over the years. So I would say as I always do, you need to be patient and try to understand the complexity the teams are working with, that complexity will always be there, it is the nature of producing simulations at this level and does take time. thanks

If you are thinking about getting a bucket seat or a "gaming chair", be prepared to spunk a load of money on something that has the ergonomics and comfort of a plank. Buckets seats are designed for cornering and crashing, "gaming chairs" are designed for fleecing rubes.
