  1. Wow Admiral! - such great news with the well-deck on new San Antonio & amphibious assets. Really enjoy this aspect of combined ops with Land, Sea & Air. Hopefully ED expands embark/disembark functionality to sea vessels, like some heli & vehicle assets. As you also mention with the upcoming Ch-47 & later the C-130, expanding functionality. To create immersion, in the meanwhile, can use static objects (linked to sea assets) to try simulate this. But I need to try brush up using triggers + scripting to try simulate better dynamic actions (landing etc) - if possible? Having fun with your USN & British LCU's linking Currenthill's & Massun92 mods which work really well on the decks/surfaces. Thanks again for all your dedicated & hard work, to make so many of us really happy

  2. Our beloved aircraft was called one of three things- “Tomcat”, “Turkey”, or “F14”. I also never heard anyone call it “The Tom” until long after it was retired. “The Cat” meant catapult in the Navy. An aviator didn’t fly the Cat, he or she got launched by one. It sounds a bit confusing for a Cat on the Cat for a Cat Shot. The Airboss would confuse the hell out of the deck crew if he had to say, “Suspend CAT 2, the Cat has a malfunction!”. The crew wouldn’t know where the problem was, in the aircraft, or in the launching system. “Cat” also was used in other aviation terms. Cat I, II and III ILS approaches. Cat A,B,C,D instrument classification for approach miniums (has to do with approach speeds vs weather minimums), and Category of RAG student, based on whether a new guy from training command, or a transition from another fleet aircraft, or refresher for someone who had been qualified in the same aircraft on a previous tour. Other differences abound. Such as “Bag” meant flight suit in the Navy, it didn’t refer to external fuel tanks. I've got a briefing in a half hour, I gotta go put on my bag and grab a cup of Joe. Fuel tanks were called “drops” or wait for it, “tanks”. A flight in the USAF is a "ride", in the Navy, it's a "hop", even if it lasts 14 hours, includes six inflight refueling and crosses an ocean. “The Jet” nomenclature came from the USAF, usually used to ascribe drama to a mundane maneuver or situation. They were always talking about “I put nine G’s on THE JET”, or ”the jet SWAPPED ENDS and the left engine FLAMED OUT”. The Navy called an aircraft…believe it or not, “an aircraft”. In recent years, “the jet” seems to have been universally adopted, and even new airline pilots who arrived after transitioning from flying bug smashers now sneer about the proper way to fly “the jet”. For some reason, the term that grinds my gears is “fighter jet”. It’s a dorky sounding term coined by hairsprayed newsreaders on crummy cable television broadcasts. Media uses has made "fighter jet" main stream. So if fighter jet makes sense, then why do we not call a P51 a “fighter prop”? But wait, “cargo jet” sounds perfectly fine, but someone calling a C-130 a “cargo prop” would sound odd. Media also uses the term “Tarmac” incorrectly. “The passengers were stuck on the tarmac for twenty minutes while the crew removed the anaconda from the copilots rudder pedals…” There are three official places “The Jet” can be located on an airport- “a runway, a taxiway, or a ramp”. Some of those surfaces are constructed of “tarmac”, most are concrete. Why aren’t passengers suffering on “The Concrete” during routine cockpit reptile removal? My favorite on this grave, linguistic quandary is a passage by astronaut Michael Collins- a broadly educated, thoughtful man, describing how NASA changed the word “nominal” from meaning “a trifling, or small amount”, into a new usage describing an event as being “normal”. I think of him every time some kid from SpaceX utters it during a Falcon launch to dramatically convey that the payload fairing jettisoned without hitting anything important. Courtesy of NASA, the new meaning of “nominal” made it into the dictionary. I can’t bear to look to see if “fighter jet” has polluted Webster’s hallowed pages yet. Depressingly, it probably has. During the height of the space program, NASA terms also found their way into military aviation, where pilots began to call something that wasn't working as it should, “an anomaly". I heard an A4 pilot say that she couldn't get the canopy to open because there was an "anomaly in the handle linkage". Scrub the launch, get Gene Krantz on the horn, break out the emergency procedures manual and run the "anomaly in the handle" procedure! If a celebrity uses a term incorrectly, it will be instantly adopted. I met John Travolta long ago in the middle of nowhere in an airport FBO. He was on a break while he training for his multi-engine rating with one of my old instructors. Years later, he was on a PBS show talking about how he had a total electrical failure due to a “Transducer Rectifier” failure in his Gulfstream II. No Mr Barbarino, it’s called a “Transformer Rectifier”, and it converts AC power into DC power. That single interview resulted in years of newbie jet pilots going on about Transducers that weren’t installed in their “Jets”. If you’ve read Shakespeare, you know that language naturally evolves, so this is all in fun, but there is no doubt that in an effort to sound cool, participants in aviation, like most endeavors, often end up appearing silly. It’s part of what makes aviation so much fun.

  4. Thanks, Beldin for your assistance. I mentioned to Beldin there's another Knox Class 3d model in the works. Much cleaner model. Hey RWC, if you're asking will I be creating those mods? The answer is yes but as you know it will take time. The San Antonio is a very detailed mod with a welldeck. The problem with that is it's a pretty good size 3d model file and it's a little difficult to work with in 3DS Max at the moment. I'm trying to shrink it so it's manageable. Once it get to a manageable size it won't take long to get it back in DCS. After I finish the next batch of 3d model ships I will start working on the Amphibs again. I'm also reworking the LCU. The LCM-8 is pretty much ready to sail. Lots of work to do but i don't mind doing it when I'm able.

  5. Dear all, Due to unfortunately being unable to offer a pre-order on Steam this time around, we'll be offering DCS: F-4E at pre-order pricing ($59.99) on Steam for the first week of sales. We hope in this way we can make up for our promise to partake in the pre-order on Steam and give you a chance to grab the F-4 for the same discount. We sincerely hope to see you flying the Phantom with us regardless of your chosen platform. Come next Monday, May 13th, we will also discontinue the merchandise and special edition packs on the Heatblur Store. If you still wanted to grab a t-shirt or vinyl for yourself, or one of the special edition packages, we kindly suggest you do it before then. The pre-order discount will of course continue for both the Lone Wolf and Crew Pack Standard Editions until release day, May 21st. The same goes for the ED E-shop of course. Regarding keys bought on our store: do not worry, we will send out instructions on how to redeem them on the DCS website shortly prior release. Your keys are always safe with us, should you have lost them, and we will be more than happy to assist you through the process. Thank you for all of the wonderful support and we hope to see you all soon in the Phantom Skies! Sincerely, Heatblur Simulations & Eagle Dynamics

  6. Wow, Ggrewe. Nice to see the amphibious vehicles. It always gives me more motivation to keep going no matter how I feel. When I first created the LCU I think I was able to simulate tanks and soldiers going ashore using the scripts. Almost sure the script is still floating around out there. I do wonder at what point ED will release the new soldiers for DCS. Maybe they will release them with the CH-47. It seems the Amphibious ships and small assets are the most requested vessels for DCS. I assume it's because of the missions that can be created with them. Whenever you all create an Amphibious assault mission in DCS. Please share it. I would love to see it. Also Ggrewe, I appreciate the coffee. Thanks for contributing to my 3d AI Ship modeling efforts. I appreciate it. Thanks. --Short Sea story. While stationed onboard my first ship. The USS Spiegel Grove LSD-32 or building 32 because we were always in port broke down. They used to wake us at dark 30 to conduct Welldeck Operations. We would launch the LCUs, LCMs and LARCs with marines. They would be gone for a good while so we used to sleep on the Wing Walls in those big Kpok Lifejackets for hours. The Wingwalls are where we handle lines for the small vessels. As sailors, we slept wherever we could lay our heads. On our first deployment to the Mediterranean Sea, an LCU hit the left side of the ship entering the welldeck so hard that it sent us to the shipyard in Athens, Greece for a week or more for repairs. That was the best liberty I ever had. The good ole days. That was in 1987 BTW. Thank you Buur. If you can find some Russian amphibious assets I can bring them to life in DCS. I see there are a lot of Russian ports on the Kola Map. That's a pretty long channel to transit for the ships though.

  7. EDIT: This is very rudimentary and lacks a <profanity>ton of nuance on purpose, but if there are any clear inaccuracies, please let me know. Basically it just means that the radar wavelength is in the scale of millimeters to a centimeter, around 25-40 GHz, while for example the Hornet APG-65 and 73 radars operate in the 8-12 GHz region, the wavelengths being more in the few centimeters range. Theoretically the higher the frequency/shorter the wavelength, the more resolution and bandwidth the radar scan can provide (with LOTS OF CAVEATS), but tends to have lower range and penetration capabilities. (EDIT2: Once you start getting into the hundreds of terahertz range and hundreds of nanometers of wavelength, you get visible light, which as we know has pretty damn high resolution capabilities, but penetrates poorly, hehe.) This is why millimeter-wave 5G phone signals can be blocked by a piece of paper, but potentially have really fast transfer rates, while ground penetrating radars often operate in the megahertz ranges, rather than the gigahertz ranges. Similarly early warning radars often use longer wavelengths that don't really get attenuated by the atmosphere, but their resolution isn't enough to actually guide missiles to the target, which is why tracking and guidance radars operate at higher frequencies. As a crude example the SA-10/S300 system's Big Bird early warning radar operates in the 3 GHz range, the Clam Shell target identification and tracking radar operates in the 8-10 GHz range, and the Flap Lid guidance radar operates in the 10-20 GHz range, each tending to go down in range but increasing in resolution and fidelity. So in the Apache case the millimeter-wave radar offers enough resolution for the radar returns to contain enough data to have a decent chance of guessing WHAT the thing being targeted is. It might not know if it's an Abrams or a T-90, but it can be pretty sure it's some form of tracked, armored vehicle. Massive ranges aren't as desirable as this kind of capability to find and prioritize targets automatically. In consumer applications millimeter radars are useful for example in scanning and mapping purposes, and can be used for example in cars to detect nearby vehicles, structures, people, etc., where they can fairly easily see through things like fog and spray that would make cameras and lasers almost useless.

  8. Neue Miltech-5 Seite. https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61559360667659 Dear DCS Simmers, Today we successfully completed the downwash effect for the Medusa rotor system. All 10 sectors of each rotor blade are included and the distance to the ground is accurately calculated. The first tests were very(!) successful. Next, the ground effect is connected to the MEDUSA rotor system. Air density, temperature, rotor speed, parts on the helicopter and other physical influences are taken into account here. GYROS: Gyro alignment is currently limited from 2 minutes to 10 seconds. However, we will implement a feature in the configuration menu that can be selected between REAL ALIGNMENT and FAST ALIGNMENT. TEST PHASE: We have programmed an extra app for the RL PILOTS that runs during the flight and allows them to influence the intensity of all control inputs during the flight. This app has sliders that are taken over in real time by DCS and are executed directly. Final Tasks for FM: - LUBRICATION - HYDRAULIC - ENGINE (This task will be finalized as soon as we have the inputs from the FM test from the RL pilots) Our Pilot already entered the Cockpit... ROIE, our Co-Pilot is ready ... CharacterCreator_1vtafcldr9.mp4

  9. FCR Basics: FCR Introduction FCR Pages and Controls NOTE. As always, these videos provide a preview of an upcoming feature to assist you in understanding a new feature. Later, it is quite possible that the feature will change, and the feature functionality has changed. As much as I’d like to, I lack the time re-record these videos. In this DCS: AH-64D video, we’ll discuss use of the Fire Control Radar, or FCR, Zoom and C-Scope functions. The Zoom function will allow you to expand a small area of the FCR display to distinguish targets in proximity and more easily to engage them. The C-Scope function allows you to display FCR symbols over the HMD and the TADS. These functions are crew station independent, meaning, use in one station will not affect the FCR display of the other station. To use Zoom, the station that wishes to use it must have the FCR selected as the Sight. For a more detailed accounting of the FCR, I’ve listed links to previous videos on the topic. First, let’s scan ahead and detect some targets on the FCR. We can use Zoom in one of two ways: First, by pressing the Zoom button on the TEDAC right handgrip, the FCR will switch to a 6:1 format around the Next to Shoot, or NTS, target. Pressing the button again will return the FCR to the normal format. This is a fast way to zoom in on your NTS. Second, with an NTS, selecting ZOOM from R1 displays a 6:1 white box with an X through it on the FCR is displayed that indicates the footprint of the Zoomed area. Using the display cursor, we can slew the Zoom box anywhere on the FCR display to determine where we wish to zoom into. With the press and release of the cursor enter switch, the FCR will display just the area covered by the Zoom box. You can then use the NTS cycle function and the cursor designation to set an NTS from the zoomed-in display. In both circumstances, if you command a scan burst, the ZOOM format will automatically exit and then return to the Zoom format once the scan burst is completed. Now let’s look at C-Scope. C-Scope is very simple to use, in that it is just turned on or off. However, the capability that C-Scope brings to the crew’s collective situational awareness cannot be over-stated. To enable C-Scope, we’ll bring up the FCR page, and we’ll press button T1 to box the C SCP option, which indicates it is enabled. As we look around with the HMD, we can now see all the symbols that are displayed on the FCR page. These symbols include FCR target symbols, the FCR Next-To-Shoot diamond, the FCR Alternate-Next-To-Shoot triangle, and any recorded missile engagements as X-shaped symbols. C-Scope symbols are displayed in the same manner as the Navigation Fly-To Cue and are displayed virtually over their real-world locations as seen through the HMD. This allows either crewmember to maintain situational awareness of the battlefield as they look outside the cockpit. C-Scope can be enabled in either crew station independently of the other, allowing the Pilot and CPG to determine whether they want C-Scope symbols to be displayed within their respective symbologies. Now let’s hop into the CPG seat and see what it looks like when using the TADS. Ok, now that we’re in the front seat, let’s turn on C-Scope up here. Like before, we bring up the FCR page and press C SCP to enable it. Now, not only will the C-Scope symbols be displayed within my HMD, but if I sight-select TADS by pressing the Sight Select switch to the right, on the right TEDAC grip, the symbols will also be overlaid within my TADS sensor video. This will allow the CPG to rapidly acquire targets on the battlefield which have already been detected by the FCR, which can now be visually identified using TADS optical sensors. C-Scope isn’t just a valuable tool for an FCR-equipped AH-64; it can also be used in AH-64’s that are not equipped with an FCR but have received FCR target data through the datalink. Even if the FCR is not installed, you can still enable C-Scope on the FCR page by pressing C SCP at button T1. As you can see, C-Scope is simple to use, but it is a very powerful feature that can drastically improve the situational awareness of the entire flight, provided at least one AH-64 is equipped with an FCR.

  12. Just thinking out loud - would be great if these modules could be 'opened up' to the community after a set number of years, to fix any remaining bugs the developers won't fix and possibly enhance the module further. Like what a talented few, motivated not by money, did with that other sim.

  13. Like others have helpfully mentioned in other posts, lowering Forest Detail Factor helps keep the FPS respectable. I don't even notice a big difference even as low as 0.55. Looks like South Atlantic and Kola share some similar "DNA" so Lowering Forest Detail Factor also helps with the SA Map. I have to give credit to EA for providing that slider a few months ago.

  14. OP they don't post here because they can't ban for valid complaints or criticism like they can on FB and Discord. Been over a year since they stopped truly supporting the Harrier. The training missions have been broken for going on 3 years. Years old bugs they have acknowledge yet refuse to address. Sad that ED allows the behavior by third parties.

  15. Maybe 2-3 days a year someone of the RB team shows up here, but the majority of the time we are all on our own here. Isn't this forum meant to be the place where we can seek help or support from the devs? Maybe even getting a small update on one or another topic? Iirc every couple of years the disappointment here boils up to apoint where yet another Grand Forum Drama ensues with ED firefighting, promises of changes for the better, new community liason people pushed into this mess ... and a couple of years have already passed. Again. So, what will happen with this forum? Will RB continue to not support their product(s) here? Will something change - and if, what will the timeline be? PS: please do NOT suggest using the RB Discord. Discord is a bunch of ... chat rooms. Not even remotely suitable as you only get a small snapshot of all the communication. We have threads here with open issues that are _several_ years old. How would you handle that in Discord? If I am mean, I would be inclined to think that this is even seen as a feature by some. Once a topic is older than a couple of hours or days, nobody will remember it, let alone ever find it again ...

  17. The fact is the DCS mossie struts appears to be fully extended the whole time which is contrary to all the images and video shown of even post war lighter mossies in these vids. They also show there isn't a violent nose up attitude at touchdown as per the dcs flight model and also show the tail to carry lift and not slam in to the runway causing damage. Another vid I found showing the strut length and tailup attitude down the runway.

  21. Hello, i have created a campaign for the Fw-190 Dora in German and English. I hope my english is good enough. https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/3337355/ https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/3337354/ The campaign is set on the Normandy 2.0 map and the WWII Assets Pack is required. In the campaign, the Allies attempt to land ground troops in the coastal areas of Dieppe, Le-Treport and Cayeux and are partially successful on the first day of the invasion. The player with the code name "Bussard 1" with his Fw-190 D-9 Dora is one of the pilots tasked with stopping the Allied attack. Features: - The campaign contains 10 missions. - "Voice overs" - Short, concrete briefings - In each mission, the player can call up the pilot's notes with a mini-card via the communication menu by pressing F10 to look up the most important data for the mission. - Flight times to the conflict area are relatively short. - The level of difficulty in the missions increases slowly. - Battles take place in the air and on the ground. - In the missions, the player must survive dogfights, bomb ships and militar vehicles and fly patrols. I hope you enjoy the campaign.

Happy to wait for the professional artists at Orbx to do their real texture magic in June. The file I changed was Eagle Dynamics\DCS World OpenBeta\Mods\terrains\Kola\shadingOptions.lua (See reference below for my values. You can change them to anything) I also used a Color Grading of Blue Tint in the DCS OPTIONS >> SYSTEM Menu to give a colder look. surface = { ['gamma'] = 6; -- 1.0080000162125 }; objects = { ['gamma'] = 4; -- 1 }; trees = { ['gamma'] = 8; -- 0.95200002193451 };

  28. Unfortunately, this affects other maps and causes some defects related to tree building (however on Kola its hardly visible). At the moment, unfortunately, due to poorly made vegetation, it is near impossible to fly low over Kola without this (this applies especially to VR but also to people with weaker PC in 2D or very high resolution over 4K) and it requires optimization work. This is a temporary solution and I hope they will improve it, not like with SA maps...

  30. Version 2.2.3 - 20240509 The past weeks went by in a blur. As I alluded to, I'm putting DML to good use to develop something along the lines of the fabled 'Foothold' series. This time, I do have something to report, and feedback from the community so far has been encouraging (thank you!): Expansion. To put Expansion into reality, many modules in DML were tweaked slightly, and a couple of new modules have seen the light of day that allow some nifty tricks. I've so far not had the time to document them, and they aren't yet up to my standards, but I'm already sure that you'll enjoy the newest addition to the DML family once they re done: 'camp' allows you to pull together owned zones, cloners and farps to create a system that can be reinforced and repaired just like in 'Expansion'. 'milHelo' and 'milWings' allow you to create randomized cas, cap or sead flights to targets, and the 'beanCounter' module has received not one, but two siblings of similar repute: 'bank' and 'income'. I'm still fully commited to bringing Expansion to a worthy 'Foothold' successor, so my work on DML is limited to beefing up, adding and testing modules, but there's too little time (yet) to create demos or document the new additions. So this release contains a lot of undocumented coolness, and some of your requests (mostly documented). Changes in detail: Documentation Main - many small changes and corrections Quickref - some corrections and additions Demos No changes Modules - asw 1.0.2 - optional 'useSmoke' attribute - autoCSAR - supports persistence - bank 1.0.0 - still undocumented - bombRange 1.1.2 - fixes typo when no bomb range is detected - camp 1.0.2 - still undocumented, oozes power - cfxZones 4.3.2 - new getListFromZoneProperty() QoL for code heads - cloneZone 2.2.1 - QoL: if cloned template is late activation, this is turned off - csarManager 3.4.0 - supports persistence (!) - global timeLimit option to have csar missions time out - dcsCommon 3.0.6 - more QoL for code heads - FARPZones 2.1.0 - automatic integration with camp - milGround - stub for later - milHelo 1.0.0 - undocumented, very powerful - milWings 1.0.0 - undocumented, sierra hotel module - ownedZones 2.3.1 - restored some ability that was erroneously removed - PlayerScore 3.2.0 - more integration with bank - radioMenus 2.3.0 - new ability to support wildcard "*" for group selection - SSBClient 4.0 - OOP upgrade - now uses cfxMX instead of groups - sweeper 1.0.0 - undocumented - tacan 1.2.2 - new 'desc' attribute - actionSound attribute - sound with output - wingTaskHelper - ugly. undocumented. They are quite easy to find along the road going east from the range control tower vctpil linked to.

  36. Directors as optional would be best. Users can enable for SP, disable for MP.

  37. If you still want to use sound mods like Echo19 after this, I have failed. All they can do is change out audio samples and modify sdef files, we can do much more in the code. They also seem to focus on F3 view at the expense of all other external view modes, which leaves a lot to be desired IMO.

  38. I believe that the F-4U is already ready, but it should not be launched until the Second World War Marianas map is finalized with the units that will come. Everything must be released at practically the same time. Of course this is what I believe.

  39. Hello Goshawk fans, here is an update of my scripts file. I'm including here the smoke mod, the suspension mod (updated) (I don't recommend this yet.. it adds unrealistic weapons to the T-45C) and the themes mod. I've fixed, but not fully tested, Rudel's training missions, and I'll post a Link to them as soon as DCS approves my User File. Drag and drop the Missions folder into the ..Saved Games\DCS.openbeta\Mods\Aircraft\VNAO_T45 folder, overwriting the original. With the added themes icons and mission files, you'll now have single and training missions in the DCS main menu. UPDATE July 22., 2025: I've removed the training mission .zip from the user files section to avoid confusion with the upcoming update to the Goshawk the missions zip file has been approved. This linked file gives you a file structure within the Mod giving you training and single player missions. Check out the link here: https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/3337350/ Training missions and single player missions by @Rudel_chw and @Fresh... Enjoy! I've added a zip file with the kneeboard images I use. Please let me know if this is too much information or overwhelming. BRGDS, Fresh p.s. Time permitting, I will delve into the smoke and suspension mod and see if I can make a version without the unrealistic weapons.. watch this space... 2024-05-08 Scripts Update.zip VNAO_T45_smoke_ON_V1.0.1.zip Theme.zip T-45 Kneeboard Images.zip VNAO_T45_suspension_fix.rar

  40. I agree. When the F-15E first came out I asked a bunch of questions in the F-15E forum here but got no RB/ED response and was advised later to use their discord. Why should I? This is the official forum and RB is obliged to respond to and support their customers here like everyone else. Are they not? Discord is fine for those who want to use it and does have some merit. But as you said it's just a running chatroom of mixed topics and not a suitable repository of info for learning. RB can discord all they want but they have a duty here as well. ED should manage them better in this regard.

  44. That doesn't really matter, because it takes about 5 of them to kill the average AI helicopter anyway...

  45. Yeah, I’ll volunteer for testing VR too. I don’t own a headset, computer wouldn’t cope and I suffer with dizzy spells but bugger all that. I’ve a keen imagination and promise to sit with my nose planted to the screen. Oh, and I can barely fly helis yet. Where do I sign?
