the cold war is gone and done i don't like to dwell on the past. russia and the us now fight proxy wars and they don't directly engage each other. a germany maps et in the 70s and 80s is mundane as hell

Well so is WW2, but that occupies a very VERY large portion of flight sims, war games, combat sims and such. Indeed there are companies that are supported ENTIRELY by "dwelling on the past" as you might say! ... and yet nowdays there is a small but growing market for WW1 flight simulations and FPS games, which is even further in the past!

Maybe the 70's and 80's Cold War is mundane to you, but I don't agree: it wasn't that long ago, and while it didn't go "red hot", it was very real, potentially devastating for all parties, and eventually got so scary that it was easier and nicer to just make friends with your "enemies" and lay down some weapons and try to have a better life.

That said... I'm not totally convinced what area of the world would be the nicest for a DCS "Cold War map". No large bodies of water, not much mountains.

Cuba:

What about the island of Cuba?!?! Ok, not the entire island as it's 1000km long... but what about the southern tip of Florida and the north western end of Cuba, sort of covering Miami to Havanah ?  Sure, for historical it would only do to have F-8 Crusaders doing photo-recon, and maybe a couple of Mitchells for Bay of Pigs...  but it has potential and could be quite "fun gameplay".

Turkey:

Ok, so Turkey was strategic in part because of Soviet Navy access to the Mediteranean, it enabled U-2 and Blackbird missions to overfly the USSR, I believe they had SAC nuke bombers there too for quick strike on Soviets.   But for DCS it could be cool because it could mesh with the Caucasus map to the north, and the Syria map to the south, once that might become possible!  It also would mean interesting terrain that's not almost all flat, rather there's a lot of mountains and large hills in Turkey. Now... the whole nation is rather large for a DCS map of today... but in time this could become practical.

Austria Czech Hungarian and Poland map:

Not the entirety of all those countries, but a map that stretches from Munich to Budapest, from Prague to Innsbruck. Flatlands, lots of mountains and natural obstacles.

Israel Jordan Egypt map:

I've proposed this before, basically starts at the bottom of the Syria map, and goes down from Haifa to Eliat, and from Alexandria to Amman. During the cold war, this was a very hot zone of conflict in the Middle Eastern wars. But it also saw direct Cold War events, such as the Soviet deployments by air transport to Egypt, and some close calls in the Mediteranean. Sure, it's not "pure cold war Soviets vs 'Muricans" but it is of that era and the Cold War planes certainly were in those battles. It also could be used convincingly for more current scenarios, and could even see some old warbirds action representing the early days of the state of Israel when they put Bf-109's into Israel's fledgling air forces. A sort of "do all eras" map.

Of course I would also love to see Vietnam, the Korean peninsula, and the Nordic region overflowing with Eurofighters, but those have been discussed many times in other threads, and all three have significant technical issues to overcome.

For the northern map I suggest the Baltic Sea. It's pretty large even if you count without the Gulf of Bothnia, but it's mostly sea, and there's plenty of action to be had there in pretty much any historical or alternate timeline, the siege of Leningrad alone providing enough Warhammer-grade action to account for nearly the entire WW2 timeline (granted, that would necessitate two asset versions, sue me). Not much to go wrong there.

Well - I did a proposal trying to keep the landmass as small as possible in the map wishlist subforum:

My final cut after some discussion in the thread to include all parties - including Sweden with the Viggen. Almost all cold war planes in our set has been in the air over this cut - and carriers can have some manouvre space in the North Sea... And it works for late WW2 as well with bombers from the UK. And no major cities accept Hamburg and Copenhagen...

Vdy7n0a.png

Or rather this was the actually the last cut - "erasing" some inland parts of Germany, Poland (only elevation data and rolling hills there) for more Baltic coastline and the Kaliningrad corner... And coastline is much more fun than inland Germany (no offense to inland living Germans and Poles in the forum)

Very cool!

Is there a mod? I just need good satellite on the ground- I'm not interested in flowers, waste bins or umbrellas on the beach for tourists.

Born to fly but forced to work.

Considering all the new and old planes, a map centered on Germany would be great. Lot of applications, from warbirds to modern era.

The Fulda’s corridor would serve for a « Red storm rising » or a « team yankee » scenario or campaign.

Well, I know that it would be a hell of work, especially concerning the cities, but it is surely a great idea

+1, it's currently my top pick for a future map, and would suit a lot of our current aircraft (many of which have appropriate liveries).

Either central Germany (think Fulda Gap), or the North German Plain (or preferably both, but owing to the size of the map, I doubt it).

Central Europe is the most awaited map according to poll. Perfect for Cold War gone hot campaign.

Add Switzerland and Austria as well please 🙂 A DACH-Map.

Switzerland and Austria have a lot of great places to fly regarding the Alps. That would also make some interesting missions.

Flying CAP in a Hornet over what is, arguably, one of the most beautiful countries on the planet would be pretty awesome. This'd be a get for me. This or the Fulda Gap.

Reformers hate him! This one weird trick found by a bush pilot will make gunfighter obsessed old farts angry at your multi-role carrier deck line up!

I cant ever see an ED map without sea being produced due to the F18 and SC. I would imagine ED would want the broadest appeal.  (I know Afghanistan is the Elephant in the room there).  Perhpas there is already a plan to make extended maps feasible (Paris to London as trailed) but, if North, Northern Germany and the North Sea/Black Sea would be a dream.

MSI Tomahawk X570 Mobo, Ryzen 5600X undervolted on Artic Freezer E34 Cooler, RTX3080 FE, 32GB (2x16GB Dual Ranked) GSkil 3600 CL16 Trident Neo RAM, 2X 4th Gen M2 SSDs, Corsair RM850x PSU, Lancool 215 Case.

That was released before there was even talk of the Hornet let alone the SC.

Or just operate out of a normal airfield, like everybody else.

Plp like Carriers. ED likes selling Carriers to plp who like carriers. Heatblur would be pretty pleased too I suspect.

If you add Switzerland you can have Hornets from motorways and a carrier on the big lake 🤣 . Kidding, but you can have the northern sea too.

I've been in BMS and indeed this region is full of everything for operations.

Sea, mountains, valleys, islands, etc. It worths to be added.

Democracy was already invented, while Scrat was eating oak fruits.

why would this map be great? Well, first of all, many assests are already there, especialy if time-span would be early to mid 90' with culmination of Operation Infinite Resolve or even later.

Let us see what planes and helicopters were used at the time:

- Mig 21 (Yugoslav Air Force - YAF, Croatian Air Force)

- Mig-29A (YAF)

- Mirage 2000 (France)

- Harrier (UK)

- Mi-8 (YAF, CAF and Bosnian forces)

- A-10

- F-16C/D

- F-18C

- MI-24 (CAF)

- F-14 (US)

- F-117

- C-130

- C17

- Gazelle (YAF, Bosnian Serb Air Force)

- Tornado

Only new assests missing - Soko G-2, J-21 Jastreb, J-22 Orao

Balkan has it all, mountains and sea, mix of Soviet/Russian and US/European hardware
