Dear ED, Before my summer holidays I have said that I have some ideas to make ED experience better for everyone but I had to evaluate them and will share them when ready. The major focus point of my critics was lack of LOD models in game assets both for some core mods and AI assets.I see that this is moving to the right direction and still expecting LOD models for the rest of the assets and also I’m looking forward to seeing the final LOD levels for Apache and Viper. Current provided LOD1 and LOD2 models reduce CPU load 75% per asset but textures are still inherited from the main model and they still occupy a large portion in video memory. I’m sure that final lod levels will cap it and bring it to the level of Tomcat, KA-50 or Hornet. Last month I was mostly focused on small additions or tweaks which will impact performance and visual fidelity with minimal impact. So any interventions which require remodeling, or recording were out of the question. Also I have waited enough so that I personally and as many of hoggit users can test one of the basic solutions that I’m going to suggest now to implement. Your team can implement any of them pretty easily without tinkering the main code requiring internal testing. Here we go. Easiest first. 1- Separate cockpit textures from object textures and provide same level of quality settings for them: Proposal: New setting in control panel: Object textures: High, Medium, Low Cockpit textures: High, Medium, Low Terrain textures: High, Low. By allowing us to keep cockpit textures separated we can keep it at higher levels together with terrain textures and reduce object textures which mostly covers external models. Those models do not require the same texel density as cockpit and terrain textures since they are rarely seen closer than 30m. This will allow fluent cpu frametimes and relax cpu memory controller tasks and allow especially VR users with 8GB gpu’s to enjoy the best visual quality in game. Cockpit textures are already separated in the game install; they are only under the mods folder. You do not need to manually tag them even. Please make this setting available for us. 2- Precaching function in graphics.lua: (actually this is easier than the other one but probably need internal discussion) Proposal: revise and ,if not necessary, remove. Precaching function given in graphics.lua (see below) apparently remains unchanged since the Lock-on game configuration files. Precaching = { around_camera = 50000; around_objects = 10000; around_types = {"world", "point"}; preload_types = {"map", "world", "mission"}; } Many people in reddit dcs related forums, followed my advice to set both parameters to 0. Which lowered their ram and even Vram usage drastically and provided more resources to be available in their system for multiplayer and VR. I personally removed the full statement from the lua file and it has the same effect as setting the parameters to 0. It has been like that in my system for at least 5 months now. Since this is a sitting sim and max speed in game is almost limited by reality and we have huge game assets but still enough bandwidth for on time delivery to render pipeline: can you reconsider this setting and remove it if it is not necessary. It happens to not break anything in game but looks like it is the problem. Thanks and, Kindest regards, The LOD’s guy PS: I'm going to post a lighter version with some more explanation in hoggit sub on reddit. You are welcome to read that too.30 points

With just what we know from available documentation, it's easily 40 percent. Flight Model issues I'm not going to count as there's no way to quantify that. Here's a document we put together a while back taking some of the missing functionality and explaining it. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1qOyE7L1CJ0R1x1kvUZQ4SlvxLsRVb-7RbW68ki1jgJc/edit?usp=drivesdk This isn't even close to all of the issues. Expect for the A/A section we didn't cover any of the bugs.3 points

VRAM limitations in VR have pretty much put my playing of DCS on indefinite hold over the last year. I just check in every month or so to see if any big improvements have happened and sadly the last big performance boon was OpenXR toolkit and open composite, both of which came from outside ED. Hopefully VRAM management is higher on the agenda than it seems to be. I love buying modules for this sim, (I keep looking at the mirage lately) but I was badly burned by the performance of the Apache and I won't be buying any more modules until I can be sure these issue have been addressed to work for the 8GB cards that most people actually use.3 points

Of course it will! I have decided to make a folded version of it seperated in the Static Objects / Structures Tab to have the ability to put the folded and unfolded Sea King on the Carrier deck or on the Airfield. null I actually plan to make the Sikorsky SH-3G, and a Westland Sea King version, maybe the HC4 as well...3 points

I don't understand how the G91R happens to be a novelty, since it was announced in 2021.3 points

I swear I'm the only one who doesn't like 1st person bodies. Are they great for immersion? yes. They also block the view of switches I'm trying to hit.3 points

Dear All, Apologies for the late notice on this; with our intense pace currently, we’re quieter than usual and time has flown since the AIM-54 update. Today’s patch does not include any changes for the Viggen or F-14. Recently, lead times changed significantly for DCS patches, and while we managed to ship our large Phoenix overhaul last update, there was only a very very small gap to contribute to this patch and so we focused on shipping a larger update for the F-14 and Viggen in the October patch. Major features which will release will be, amongst others, the new cockpit pilot bodies, Viggen art updates, a new free campaign for the F-14A, and the new full implementation of jamming and associated EW effects in the AWG-9 radar. We'll also be updating the Forrestals with various improvements and adjustments. We’ll do an in-depth dive on the last part soon to give you all an idea of what to expect, as with the AIM-54 as it’s a rather large update to the F-14’s radar and another massive step towards full completion. Thank you for all the support and stay tuned for the breakdown on the EW/Jamming effects! Sincerely, HB null2 points

One of the things I have always really wanted to come to DCS is the Vietnam air & air ground war. It is a period that is rarely simulated, and one that has always interested me. I've noticed we have a number of upcoming Vietnam Era aircraft, and we have more than a few that are already made (MiG's and the UH2). Now all we need is a period map of Vietnam, and maybe an asset's pack. So fingers crossed, maybe in the next couple of years it will happen!2 points

The manual sweep switch on the grip can only honor or exceed the sweep program; it can't unsweep below the schedule. That requires the utilizing the emergency sweep handle. There is validity in using the sweep handle because the program was changed from max lift coefficient to max specific excess power in early blocks, as the airframe and wings were designed to withstand it; the original program has roughly 0.1-0.2 Mach variance versus the later. The issue is that the onset rate is higher in the former, and maintaining a higher net available G and drag in those respective areas versus having the wings program aft. It also has effectiveness at altitude, as relative Mach goes up versus calibrated speeds but the energy on the wing isn't comparable to down low. Up high you can use the handle forward and maintain a good bit more maneuvering capability than you normally would with the schedule. If you think the A is underpowered or can pull its wings off easily now, manually control the emergency sweep handle- because you're either you're going to see even more drag, more G, or perhaps youll find a balance with regards to how it was originally set up and be successful with it, as the original crews were.2 points

Weird. I don't have those pedals, but I've never seen anyone else complain about that. Pretty sure that's not normal, but sorry I can't be more help, hopefully someone with those pedals can confirm they work for them, and then you just have to track down the problem...2 points

Feedback has been submitted by the SME team regarding the tail rotor VRS and has been reported. Not going into the details, but in reality the weathervane effects of the AH-64 vertical tail should force the nose into the direction of the relative wind (whether it be high-speed sideways flight or a strong crosswind) long before any VRS effects can manifest in the tail rotor. But as of now, I don't have any other news I can share on this matter.2 points

Yeah the whole situation is a bit weird IMO. Best guess on the corsair is that they are waiting to finish the asset pack for it, waiting on ww2 Marianas to release it, or waiting on an unannounced zero to fight against it, or some combo of all 3.2 points

Thinking of it, one feature or improvement i'd love to see with DCS and Combined Arms is to have actual ground battles happening, proper ground battles with actual moving vehicles trying to achieve something (An objective of some sort) and not just drive to a set waypoint while engaging what ever ennemy unit they see. Might be something happening in all the scripted campaigns and missions (Which i unfortunately never play since i spend all my time in MP), but from my experience playing online, you simply never see ground units actually driving around trying to reach an objective and conquer it or what not, it's always the same thing, static stuff waiting to be destroyed like a shooting range almost Something that clearly seems to add to the fun and immersion is having the feeling that you are actually participating to a battle taking place, whether if you are flying or driving a vehicle, looking at some videos of another game represented by a snail (I don't actually enjoy that game though because of how arcadish it is and other reasons, whatever anyway), seeing the possibility to drive all sorts of vehicles while guys are flying attack helis or planes is one feature that's awesome, making the world around you feel alive, not just you and a few other guys flying and picking on static targets. Being a tanker and seeing helicopters or planes fly around while you're having your battle on the ground is simply awesome, and the other way around too, that to me is what DCS lacks a lot at the moment.2 points

Don't forget you can try the Ka-50 for free for a 14-day period ("Licensing" > "Trial License" item in your DCS website profile).2 points

The Ka-50 does not seem to be in service anymore. It was mainly used during the second Chechen war, as depicted here. The Ka-52 took over since then. The Ka-50 is not that simple: one has to understand the trimmer system. Once this is done, she's a treat to fly. To my knowledge, campaigns still work, but given their age, and since the sim changed a lot through all these years, some players encounter issues. I'm willing to help fixing these issues. If you decide to buy the Ka-50 and find issues, please tag me, so I can send you fixes, then I'll report issues to ED devs.2 points

I downloaded the installer for the dedicated server. When I first ran it, it said it wanted 50GB or so of hard drive space. So I made that space by deleting some stuff. Then it would install. Then afterwards, it popped up with "start download now", which of course is what I wanted. Then It told me I suddenly need 160GB of storage space. Could you please make up your mind BEFORE you make me uninstall and remove stuff please? Also would be great if I could install only what I needed. If I am never going to host missions on certain maps then there is no point in downloading the terrain data for those maps. Hard drive space isn't free you know. Would be great to have an option to not install everything.2 points

No, it doesn't make even a little bit of sense. There's no 'no escape zone' concept for a maddog - it is a visual mode, as in you're shoothing at something that you see in your HUD. The missile is active off the rail and its flight controls are immediately influenced by your aircraft attitude and lift vector, including g's you're pulling. This means tracking your target to some degree, not 20nm shots at 'unsuspecting targets' or shooting out of barrel rolls etc. While I don't think this is modeled in DCS, there's no condition here in which the missile would just turn around.2 points

Ah yes, I know what you mean. Well I just tried it out again, and either it must have improved or I was doing something wrong before (my money’s on the latter) but it’s bloody great now! The only complaint I have so far is the radar page in the hornet, especially contacts, are quite wobbly but I think I can live with that.2 points

I don't think anyone really knows, there isn't much on the 530 guidance on the missile side that I have found. Though given its a 60's missile that may be the case. What we do know from the manuals is that once you are locked by the Cyrano radar there is no further change in frequency/PRF/anything from a locked up state to a missile just got fired state. So from that perspective there shouldn't be any difference in "state" an RWR could see there to indicate a missile has been fired. Other radars do other things like switching to CW illum for example for some US radars which can be detected. But this doesn't seem to be the case for the Cyrano.2 points

I haven't flown the 18 yet, but I'd take a guess that my instant death to ejection ratio in the 16 is probably floating around 100/1. In any FC3 aircraft, feels more like 1/4. I can usually eject after being struck, but not in the 16. I think a better approach would be to grab some server logs and do some comparisons. "The F-16 has a large glass canopy and the pilot is less protected than other aircraft." That's not a reasonable assumption to make. It's not even made of glass. Glass would be the worst choice of material possible in terms of weight, UV transmission, smallest xBand tangent losses, cost, and protective strength. I don't know of any example where glass was ever used as a canopy material for any fighter jet aircraft made after the discovery of polycarbonate. Based on lack of losses, there's not enough statistical evidence to provide nor reasonable structural assumption that the pilot is less protected compared to much anything other than craft with a hog style reinforced tub. In fact, there is an interesting article here about one of very few losses where the pilot was able to eject, and with an interesting bonus, the canopy was eventually recovered still in one piece. I believe Hawkeye62 and a few others have been trying to get airdrop torpedo's to work for quite some time, without success. I dont know how far along they are with that problem but you could ask him, he's a very helpful guy who is more than happy to share knowledge. I played around with it for a while with the Merlin Mod I did with Admiral, using the Mk46, but it jut drops them like a bomb and I decided to wait and see if anyone else could crack the problem. Really pleased to see the folded version, we did our Merlin the same way, as a static.2 points

I'm lov'in this module. I put my VR glasses on, turn on my Buttkicker chair vibrator, and fly treetop level across the countryside. What a great feeling. And the basics in this aircraft are... basic and easy to learn. Muchas gracias. I own a lot of modules and this is my new fav. I know it's early access but I highly recommend the Mosquito.2 points

I do see the point your making in the posts above and it’s certainly not completely impossible that a Heatblur Tornado might happen at some point. I just think it is unlikely for Heatblur to develop another Tornado version, after AviaStorm successfully released their 1989 Tornado. Even if it would be a later or ADV or ECR etc. version. Kinda like Razbam developing an F-14D. Would be weird somehow (to me at least).2 points

This is still a problem as of the latest patch. The issue was claimed to be fixed in the patch notes, but it was not fixed! PLEASE download the supplied .miz and track files, it makes both issues EXTREMELY obvious: 1. Ground units DO NOT have heat on Late Activation both by script and by ME Trigger. 2. Static vehicles (NOT spawned by mission author) have ridiculously high / MAX heat. FLIR is still completely unusable on units that do not move!2 points

IronMike and Timo: Per IronMike, it was true regarding trying DCS. I share the sentiment regarding learning process, and also the resulting enjoyment knowing how to employ (or at least make sense of) the knowledge and data so research and presented. It was March of 2019. I was walking out of Target. I googled F-14 from Youtube just for fun then found the "ANYTIME, BABY!!" release trailer/video. I was blown away not only that I haven't seen an F-14 sim anywhere since the days of Microprose's F-14 Fleet Defender, but the graphics, the music, and then the cinematics all were too captivating for me to ignore. I began looking around to learn more. If my memory serves me right, I eventually came across the post "Scan, Lock, Fire" from Heatblur. Turned out they also modelled the radar and weapon system. Oh My GAWD!! That green colored CRT "fishbowl" looking TID, the AWG-9, and the mighty AIM-54s. I knew I had to get back into flight simming just for the TOMCAT. I liked the Falcon, the Hornet, but the Tomcat... Next thing I know, I googled the required specs to experience it. Then I realized it is part of the DCS module collection; within two months, I built a DCS gaming rig (I haven't had a gaming anything since 2003. Lots to learn but worth all of it) for what but oh yes that ol 'Grumman Cat. Now, here we are. I am able to enjoy the Grumman F-14 Tomcat faithfully recreated by Heatblur, learn its AWG-9 kirks and strengths, and even dab into intercept geometry (thanks to extensive writeup and analysis from Xarov of Fly-and-Wire, meanwhile also thanks to Chuck's Guide). I love it. Last but not least, the group of enthusiasts that contribute to this F-14 experience is immense, at times, quite intense (). To end, a modest system with medium in-game settings, a simple flight stick, a copy of Heatblur's F-14, afterward, your desire and time available are the only limits, friend. Flying and admiring is fun, and the awe that comes from learning how to employ them are even better! Thanks, IronMike and Heatblur. You guys have brought me an immense opportunity to rekindle with my youth... and with that, pure joy. Oh hell, it is more then joy now--it's a freaking journey!! p.s: If Timo Niemelä is reading this, have a peek at FlyandWire.com, grab and skim the Chuck's Guide for the F-14 Tomcat. I don't mind getting blame for getting you closer the Grumman Tomcat. Lastly, I left you a picture here. It as made by someone at Hoggit subreddit, Ellyrion, more then three years ago. Cheers!1 point
