05 January 2024 Dear Fighter Pilots, Partners and Friends, All of us at Eagle Dynamics thank you for your incredible support and commitment in 2023 and wish you and your loved ones health, happiness and prosperity in 2024. Happy New Year! 2023 was an important year for DCS. Many issues such as performance were addressed with the launch of multithreading and DLSS/FSR. Efforts will continue into 2024 with further tuning and enhancements, especially in VR. This week we look toward 2024, safe in the knowledge that there are great things to come. Please check out our 2024 and Beyond video and enjoy! This coming year will see the continued development and release of many exciting aircraft and maps from Eagle Dynamics. Highlights include the announcement of the MiG-29A Fulcrum, Afghanistan and Iraq maps, and continued work on the CH-47F, Hellcat/USS Enterprise, and the Marianas World War II map. Please see our 2024 module development roadmap below. The DCS Winter sale was drawing to a close but due to its great success and demand we have extended the sale by one whole week and will now close on the 14th of January 2023 at 15:00 GMT. Don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy up to 50% off most DCS modules! Thank you for your passion and support and best wishes for 2024. Yours sincerely, Eagle Dynamics 2024 & Beyond Video A Look Ahead Whereas the 2023 focus of Eagle Dynamics was primarily on DCS core improvements like multithreading, DLSS/FSR, Voice Chat, and bug fixes, our partners had an exciting year that included new products like the F-15E Strike Eagle, new Mirage F1 versions, the Normandy 2 and Sinai maps, and many fantastic campaigns. 2024 promises to be an eventful year with many projects in development such as the full fidelity MiG-29A Fulcrum, CH-47F Chinook, F6F Hellcat, and the Afghanistan, Iraq, and Marianas World War II maps. Our 3rd party partners are working diligently on the F-4E Phantom II, A-7E Corsair II, MiG-23 Flogger, C-130 Hercules, F4U Corsair, La-7, OH-58D Kiowa, and the Kola map. 2024 & Beyond Roadmap Our Current Plan Let’s take a brief look at the new aircraft under development in 2024, in no particular order. Detailed specifications and features will be listed for each product during each product announcement as we get closer to the release. New Eagle Dynamics Aircraft DCS: CH-47F Much of the 2023 CH-47F work focused on the creation of the external model, cockpit/cargo models as well as systems and FM. The model now accurately reflects a US Army CH-47 from the mid-2000s. Much of the work now involves the finalisation of the flight dynamics and flight control system, along with the many multi-function display pages and sub-pages. As with all DCS aircraft since the Ka-50, the CH-47 will have fully modelled electrical, hydraulic, fuel, and other systems that exist within the simulation as “live” systems to manage voltage, pressure, flow rates, temperatures and all other operational systems. To support advancements in the DCS logistical system, the CH-47F will also be equipped with cargo and sling management capabilities as well as defensive gun positions. DCS: F6F Hellcat Also started in 2023, the Hellcat has made great progress. When creating the external model, internal structural modelling was created to provide a very accurate and realistic structure in order to enhance damage modelling. The flight model development is in full swing, and it is being created to match first-hand knowledge of its handling and performance in cooperation with The Fighter Collection. The Hellcat will not exist in a vacuum though, and Pacific Theater of Operations (PTO) opponent aircraft are already in development, as well PTO specific ground and naval forces. DCS: MiG-29A Fulcrum We are excited to announce our first full fidelity 4th generation Russian fighter: the MiG-29A Fulcrum! The Fulcrum has been a massively successful, single-seat fighter that was developed to counter the F-15, F/A-18, and F-16 during the height of the Cold War. Today, it serves numerous armed forces, and will fill an important role in DCS. Based on publicly available manuals, the DCS Fulcrum will be a 1980s era MiG-29, but it will still be a potent threat to other DCS aircraft with its array of radar- and infrared-guided missiles, its 30mm cannon, and unguided air-to-ground weapons. In the right hands, the MiG-29 can be a tough opponent with its Helmet Mounted Sight paired with high-off boresight R-73 air-to-air missiles. New Eagle Dynamics Maps 2024 will also be a great year for new maps. Our Terrain Development Kit (TDK) continues to grow in capabilities each year, and these new maps will leverage these features to create the best maps yet. DCS: Afghanistan First hinted at a year ago, we are happy to confirm that an Afghanistan map is coming to DCS. A flash point spanning thousands of years, Afghanistan served as the backdrop to two of the largest conflicts in living memory. More focused on Counterinsurgency (COIN) warfare than large force-on-force battles, the Afghanistan map will bring a new mode of warfare to DCS battles and our most popular aircraft like the AH-64D, Mi-24P, A-10C, Su-25, F-16C, F/A-18C, will be great mission choices. DCS: Iraq We are also excited to announce an Iraq map coming to DCS. From Operation Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom to the War on Terror, Iraq has been one of the most significant flash points of the late-20th and early 21st centuries. The Iraq map will initially be centred on Baghdad to best provide War-on-Terror and War on Isis scenarios. Later, the map will be expanded south to provide older scenarios like Operations Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom. DCS: Marianas World War II To support the DCS: F6F Hellcat and other PTO aircraft and units coming to DCS, we have been adapting the current Marianas for the past year and into 2024. The map is based on painstakingly researched documents, photos, and accounts of the Mariana Islands in the summer of 1944, at the time of the Battle of the Marianas between the United States and Imperial Japan. This will be a free map that leverages our latest TDK for improved performance and realism. In parallel with these new product efforts, we will be focusing on continued development of existing modules such as, but not limited to, the F-16C, F/A-18C, AH-64D, and Supercarrier. Winter Sale Extended Extended! By popular demand, we have extended the DCS Winter Sale by an additional week. Don't miss out on this final opportunity to take advantage of these great deals before it’s too late. Act now and enjoy up to 50% savings before they are gone on the 14th of January 2024 15:00 GMT. As you may have seen in the changelog for the Russia asset pack I'm going through all the radar, reflection, countermeasures and weapons parameters when updating a pack. So there may be some relative inconsistencies until I'm through all the packs. But the goal is to have a more uniform and holistic approach to the weapons and systems configurations. As requested earlier in the thread, I will be adding a modern loadout B-1B in the next US pack update, with both the JASSM-ER and LRASM. It's an impressive antiship delivery platform equipped with the LRASM.4 points

Very cool DCS an beyond! MIG-29 was ovbious it has been teased for so long in previous DCS videos, sharing screen time with other full fidelity modules in most of the recent ed videos. I've watched Nick recent interviews and I know that DCS Dynamic Campaign is still far from release. But what about ground crew and ATC? Is DCS and beyond a hint to that? If I remember correctly the video has some yellow shirts passing command to another one. A more realistic ATC (like X-Plane, even old ones), JTACS, air commands and ground/sea crew is something that it's not as shinny as a new aircraft but IMO it's much more immersive than anything else. I mean we have all kind of navigation systems, but for what? We are currently the Kings and Queens of the game, all NPCs just vow to us when we want to do any manouver or whatever. Since the Dynamic Campaign wants to achieve a lot of things I'm not sure if ed wants to release all in one version release or progresively. Getting ATC and the other things before Dynamic Campaign it's also a way of keeping us entertained while the big project comes out, heheh. Well anyways, great job ed!! Until next DCS an beyond!4 points

Best. Day. Ever. I am so excited for Fulcrum. I remember seeing one as a little boy and it has been my favorite plane ever since. Your video brought that little boy out in me You have made my day, there was no better aircraft to develop. (Not even the 'my humps... my humps, my humps, my humps' 9.13) Don't listen to the partypoopers. They will look at a Spitfire and say with a straight face it's crap because it doesn't have AMRAMs On the down low, historically I just wish the design bureau gave us Air to Air Refueling Capabilities before the K variant Now there were 9-12 with retrofitted wing drop tanks that flew over Iraq... could reduce that 'Range Anxiety'4 points

Rockets currently have an unrealistically large fireball effect when impacting, same for tows/rpgs/s8/ and so on. If you were to take the effects from something like the apache 30mm, and upscale it like 300%, increase the smoke and you would have a much closer representation of what it looks like in real life. Little quick flash...lotta smoke, sometimes no flash. The current rocket effects would definitely be realistic as-is for a thermobaric warhead IMHO. I know this is probably much easier said then done to do3 points

yes agree, that's why writhe the damage model upgrade. Because the AC's have all system realiszicly modelled, but almost never use it for emergency case. I never experienced that I have only minor failure, fuel leaking or hydraulic problem to manage the emergency landing procedures. Nor I had to use the fire extinguisher system for engine fire ,airstart because of engine stall or stops or that I need to make the belly landing due to the landing gear failure. When I got shot, every time got instant explosion or such failure that I had to eject . I never used the trim to compensate the instabilities of the damage to reach the nearest airfield3 points

That still doesn't make your opinion relevant. If throughout 2023 they figured that standard US config was the only one they could and were legally allowed to eventually create with acceptable systems fidelity, then that's the only config we can get, at least for now. 3D models change and planned features change during development. Sometimes things are added, sometimes removed. "Everything is subject to change". I've seen it in warbird modules, so it's nothing unusual in DCS.3 points

Meantime we're busy getting the F-8 Crusader into the pack. It will be a low-fi version with a SFM and not really carrier operations suitable, but for the AI. If you know how to get the carrier ops going for a SFM plane, please reach out! Hawkeye60 and seabat have delivered model and liveries in abundance for the F-8. Citizen has reworked the AA effects of the Maddox armament. Sidekick has provided screenshots for the loading et al screens. seabat has delivered new parking positions and fixed the AI landing of CVA-31! Toan sent new wake effects for both Bonnie Dick and Maddox. Stay tuned for an update, hopefully next week! Cheers, TeTeT3 points

This may actually be doable. Have you guys heard the news? The FC-31 won't be the same as the J-35 which is adopted by the Chinese Navy. The FC-31 will remain as an "export only" jet while the Chinese Navy uses J-35. The recently released photo showed that the J-35 is significantly larger than FC-31. It is roughly the size of an F-22. So it is basically a heavy fighter now. Picture: J-35 Picture: FC-31 Picture: Size Comparison The smaller FC-31 will be the export only. It uses either the RD-93 or WS-13 engine, while the J-35 uses larger WS-19 engines. Moreover, recently, the Pakistan Air Force has officially announced the plan to purchase FC-31. (please see the video) Afterwards, the Indian government expressed their concern as their own 5th gen fighter jet would not be available before China delivered the FC-31 to Pakistan. So, hopefully, we can get it in the near future for DCS. Flying a 5th gen fighter in DCS, wouldn't that be beautiful? After China delivers FC-31 to Pakistan, can you please ask Shengyang and see if they will grant us permission to make FC-31 just like you did with FC-1? You know what they say, "There is no harm in asking".2 points

Probably the best DCS newsletter I’ve ever seen. A full Mig-29 module, an F6F Hellcat, pacific ww2 operations, recreating operation Desert Storm. Most of the replies in help threads contain factually incorrect advice, which makes setting up VR more confusing for everyone. I'm going to address a few common ones: - SteamVR + OpenXR: SteamVR supports OpenXR (it's an "OpenXR runtime") - if you want to use SteamVR + DCS, you want to start by setting SteamVR as your OpenXR runtime. You do not want to 'disable OpenXR' to use SteamVR, unless for some very rare reason you specifically want to use OpenVR. If you do this, no games that require OpenXR will work unless you change your settings back. - "OpenXR Tools for Windows Mixed Reality" is specifically for Windows Mixed Reality headsets. If you have a quest, rift, pimax, varjo, beyond, or any other non-WMR headset, do not install this software, and especially do not click the button to set WMR as your OpenXR runtime. If the tutorial you're watching or the guide or reading says to do this and doesn't say "just for G2" or "just for WMR", find a better guide. If you just want to see information on openxr, https://github.com/maluoi/openxr-explorer/releases/latest is a better tool, in combination with https://github.com/fredemmott/OpenXR-API-Layers-GUI/releases/latest if you have several OpenXR API layers (roughly 'plugins') installed*. - "OpenXR Toolkit" is not the same thing as "OpenXR Tools for Windows Mixed Reality" - "OpenXR Toolkit" is not the same thing as "OpenXR" - "OpenXR Toolkit" is never required. It's a great tool, install it if there's a specific reason you want it, but it's not necessary. - "Set WMR/your headset/SteamVR to OpenXR": this is the wrong way around and can confuse people: "Set OpenXR to SteamVR/WMR/your headset" is correct. It's a single OpenXR setting for all OpenXR hardware manufacturers and games - you are changing if OpenXR games use WMR, oculus, steamvr, or whatever, not a headset setting. Specifically these buttons in steamvr/wmr/manufacturer-specific stuff all change `HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Khronos\OpenXR\1\ActiveRuntime` - SteamVR can simultaneously be your selected OpenVR and OpenXR runtime. Games will only use one at a time. - If WMR is set as your OpenXR runtime, your G2 can be used by openxr *or* steamvr-via-openvr *or* classic (deprecated) Windows Holographic *or* opencomposite-via-openvr* without any settings changes. Games will only use one at a time. - If Oculus is set as your OpenXR runtime, your quest/rift can be used by openxr, *or* steamvr-via-openvr *or* opencomposite-via-openvr *or* the classic (deprecated) libovr without any settings changes. Games will only use one at a time. - If you need to change your OpenXR runtime and the buttons in the various vendor-specific tools aren't doing what you want, https://github.com/rpavlik/xr-picker/releases/latest is a good tool * OpenXR-API-Layers-GUI can also be used to fix issues, but I'm recommending it here because layer (plugin) order matters, and the current version of OpenXR-Explorer sorts them alphabetically - this means that OpenXR-Explorer is not currently useful for troubleshooting API layer issues. This should be fixed in the next version of OpenXR-Explorer.2 points

That MiG-23 looked really good as well - just a shame it was only a glimpse2 points

Really the boarding ladder should only be down if the crew is boarding, or the ground crew are working on the jet or prepping it. Typical static jet on the deck or tarmac I wouldn't expect to see the ladder deployed. If you're setting a static jet however to have the canopy up then ladder down makes sense. Logically (and may be done eventually) the boarding ladder should be handled under the ground crew comms with the chocks, air supply, and ground power. During startup the ladder should be stowed going off a number of clips such as this from VF-211 at Oceana:2 points
