  1. 28th February 2025 Dear Fighter Pilots, Partners and Friends, In this newsletter we highlight several new weapons features that will noticeably improve gameplay. These have been developed over the past several months and focus both on air-to-air and surface-to-air missiles. Please read the details below. For those looking forward to experiencing the Mariana Islands during the pivotal battles in the summer of 1944, please check out the Marianas 1944 development screenshots below. These images highlight some of the key differences between the modern and World War II versions of the terrain. We kindly remind you that the modern day DCS: Marianas is free, as will be the upcoming World War II version. The DCS Q&A Part 2 video is now available on Matt Wagner’s channel. Please watch it for some insight into our development priorities and answers to many of your most pressing questions. Many thanks to all of you who sent in questions! Watch now. Thank you for your passion and support. Yours sincerely, Eagle Dynamics Weapons Development Progress Appearance of Missile Contrails at Low Temperatures Modern missiles use reduced-smoke solid-fuel rocket motors, as well as liquid-fuel motors. However, these cease to be “low-smoke” at altitude due to the drop in air temperature. The exhaust of solid-fuel missiles, such as the AMRAAM’s HTPB/AP fuel, contains Hydrogen Chloride HCl, which at low temperatures forms crystal hydrates that generate a dense contrail. The exhaust of liquid-fuel missiles contains water vapor, which also generates a dense contrail in cold air. In winter, a contrail can appear even at low altitudes. At Arctic temperatures, the contrail may appear even at ground level. In the screenshot, an F-15C aircraft launches a missile at a target high above it. As illustrated in the image, the first part of the missile's flight has a “low-smoke” trail where the air temperature is above -25°C. As the missile climbs, a dense contrail appears as the air temperature falls below -25°C. On the Kola map, you can set the air temperature down to -30°C, and this results in “low-smoke” missiles having trails at surface level. This is an important tactical point, as the smoke trail reveals not only the missile launch but also its trajectory. Trajectory Fluctuations of Older Generation Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM) Systems We recently added authentic guidance algorithms for the older Soviet SA-2 and SA-3 SAM systems. Due to the low angular accuracy of first generation radars, and the design features of the radio command control system, noticeable fluctuations are observed in the flight path of SAM missiles. These limitations lead to increased errors in the targeting, which was compensated for by large warheads. We have implemented two new modes of guiding SAM missiles. By default, the improved lead command to line-of-signt (CLOS) mode is used, but if the target use jammer or has a speed of less than 100 meters per second, the conventional CLOS (three-point guidance) mode is used. Realistic Pattern of Proximity Fuze We recently added new and more realistic SAM missile proximity blast patterns for fuzes. The proximity blast pattern is now a more realistic, “wagon wheel” shape rather than spherical. This allows the missile warhead to more effectively fuze when the target is in the lethal area of the expanding rod zone or fragmentation field. This increases the warhead lethality. This new mechanism allows us to set unique shapes and sizes of patterns based on fuze and warhead types. It is an important step in the development of munitions for DCS. You can expect the first implementation of this feature for the AIM-120 air-to-air missile in the next update. Marianas 1944 Development Progress The free Marianas 1944 map currently in development will focus on the brutal battles between the United States and Japan for the islands of Saipan, Guam, and Tinian in the summer of 1944. This coincided with the Battle of the Philippine Sea that saw large-scale naval warfare between aircraft carrier task forces. World War II History and Key Battles The Mariana Islands became a flashpoint in 1944, and it shaped the outcome of the Pacific Theatre of Operations (PTO). Three major operations stand out: Battle of Saipan (15 June – 9 July 1944) Battle of Guam (21 July – 10 August 1944) Battle of Tinian (24 July – 1 August 1944) Each of these iconic battles, fought across rugged terrain in sweltering summer heat, showcased the evolving tactics of amphibious warfare combined with naval close air support. These battles changed the course of the war in the Pacific by establishing air bases within striking distance of Japan. Modern vs. 1944 – Island by Island While the modern Mariana Islands map features contemporary infrastructure, airfields, and urban centers, the DCS: Marianas 1944 map will present a significantly different depiction of these islands. Guam Today: It is one of the largest U.S. military bases in the Pacific, and it includes expansive naval and air force installations that cover much of the island. WWII Era: Small towns, villages, and relatively little infrastructure. Tinian Today: Sparsely populated and far removed from its former prominence in global history. WWII Era: An agricultural hub in the summer of 1944, it was later transformed into a crucial military staging area during the final stages of the war, including B-29 bombing missions over Japan. Saipan Today: A popular destination with golf courses, resort areas, and recreational facilities, it reflects a strong tourism industry. WWII Era: Dominated by plantations and small-scale settlements. Rota WWII Era & Today: Rota remains one of the lesser-developed islands in the chain, with minimal changes over the decades. Rota offers a quieter pace of life in the Marianas. Pagan Today: Largely uninhabited since a volcanic eruption in the 1980s, it is mostly untouched by modern development. WWII Era: Home to a local population and Japanese military presence. The goal of DCS: Marianas 1944 is to faithfully recreate the conditions that defined the battles of 1944. You can look forward to authentic period-based airfields, buildings, vegetation and agriculture, roads and rail lines. The 1944 version poses the unique challenges of older navigation technology, limited logistical support, and high-stakes amphibious operations. This WWII-era environment will offer an immersive glimpse into the intensity of the Pacific War. We look forward to sharing more details on DCS: Marianas 1944 as development continues. In the meantime, make sure you explore the free DCS: Marianas map, and stay tuned for future updates on this thrilling journey back in time. Q&A by Matt Wagner Your overwhelmingly positive response to Matt Wagner's January Q&A has not gone unnoticed! Many new and interesting questions came from the previous video, so this one will seek to provide some answers, such as the status of the dynamic campaign and future aircraft development. Watch the February 2025 Q&A video. Thank you again for your passion and support, Yours sincerely,

  2. @tobi @Eight Ball I second my friend's comments and will take it a step further. Please listen to my video gents. You have done more than just create a mod for DCS, you have changed the community. You have turned long time single player DCS members into cooperative machines on dedicated servers. This is all because of you and your hard work. The Little Bird was going to be the game changer helo for the Afghanistan and Iraq map in my humble opinion, based on facts from our ITJ mission. I had too much to say in a thread so please take the time to listen to my overwhelming gratitude for what you have brought to DCS and the community and my plead to have you stick around.

  3. F*ck us, we don't matter; nor does a mod for a plane game, really*. @tobi, @Eight Ball look after yourselves, and as I assume you work pretty closely together, look after each other. Heaps of people here right behind you, full of admiration and gratitude for what you've already accomplished. If anyone fancies a chat I'm only a PM away, and I'm sure others are just as close Motivation comes and goes, its focus shifts and shifts back, enjoyment can be found in all sorts of places at all sorts of times. Keep looking, keep enjoying Per ardua...! *Although when that mod is de facto the most accurate and immersive public whirlybird sim ever in any platform, it kinda is a big deal

  4. Wow this is so unexpected! This was shaping up to be the greatest mod ever made for DCS. I've been refreshing this thread every day in anticipation of the MH-6. But I'm not important, agree with everyone else - you guys are total rockstars for the joy you've brought us thus far! Thanks so much for your monumental efforts and I am certain there's many silent members that will have appreciated everything you've done and will be deeply saddened by the news. The unsung heroes of DCS for sure. I'll hope that you guys are doing well and maybe one day you return to this amazing project. Let us know as a community if there's anything we can do to help

  5. Admire the honesty Tobi, cheers. I’d echo Tonkers post. We’re all chuffed to bits with what you’ve already given, anything any other time’s a bonus and I’ll look forward to whatever's next.

  7. Yeah agreed about Afghanistan and Iraq. I basically got those with the sole purpose of flying the AH-6 on them when it came out. @Eight Ball @tobi I imagine you have already considered this, but would a full fidelity AH-6/MH-6 be a possibility? Surely that would sell like hot cakes with the aforementioned maps? The Little Bird is basically the most ideal/ fun helicopter that anyone can just get in and go, unlike the Apache or the Kiowa that are both highly compromised given the need for some form of co-pilot AI interaction. And since it's super easy to learn it would be ideal for loads of players with limited time. Never mind about the fact that every man and dog wants to fly something similar to a Black Hawk Down mission. If funding would help you with motivation irrespective of mod or full fidelity route please let us know here. You could start a crowd sourcing campaign? I'd imagine there's quite a few of us who are passionate enough that we would be willing to all chip in for the cause. Either way, wish you both all the best. Health first, everything else after that. Let us know how we can help to get the project back up and running if there is a way to do so.

  10. To be constantly updating to the very latest NV drivers is not the best option, it will backfire at some point. They're also historically prone to errors when a new architecture is launched - as has been the case this month. And it's even worse with "Beta" non-WHQL drivers (never, ever, install these). None NV driver is perfect, they are always in constant corrections, and new bugs appearing at times (when previously those weren't present). Latest GPU hardware and popular game titles are the priority for improvements, while others are deprecated and can become worse in the process (and eventually they do). Simply put, stick to the good old "if it ain't broken, don't fix it". If you have an RTX 40 series GPU, stick with driver 566.36 (link here) as that was the last "trouble free" driver for those models. There's a better performance alternative in driver 566.03 (here) but it's not as refined bugs-fix wise. If you have an RTX 30 series GPU (or older), stick with 537.58 (link here) because this is still the very best driver (great overall framepacing) for those models. I also strongly suggest to debloat the NV drivers before installing them - they always have a heap of nefarious bloatware taking precious HW resources for no good reason. You can do this by using NVCleanstall (link here). If you never done this, there's a tutorial here (there may be others around) to see how it works.

  11. Great to finally hear something about the development of the Dynamic Campaign in the Q&A. I'm sure the community will be delighted to know that work is ongoing and that we are getting closer and closer finally. Exactly the sort of transparency that I think everyone was wanting on the topic, even if we still have another year to wait. Could I ask, following up on Matt's explanation as to why more RedFor full fidelity aircraft have not been done due to a lack of reference material, have ED ever considered adding some more RedFor aircraft to DCS in the form of "Flaming Cliffs" modules? We obviously have the Su-27 and Su-25 already, so what would be the issue adding MiG-23/27, Su-24 and perhaps even something more modern like Su-27SM, MiG-29SMT, Su-35S ect? Would there not be enough reference data to add them to the list of Flaming Cliffs aircraft with reduced complexity in terms of systems modelling?

  12. Well ... well, well Our attack on the enemy positions in the flank went terribly wrong. Pretty soon, the enemy forces surrounded our positions and our small infantry groups were encircled. Commander Patrick decided to evacuate our guys in the night. So the plan was easy: infiltrate and land our spec team near the area under night vision conditions, hovering over the area and stand by for fire support, attack located enemy positions and finally bring our boys back home. Normally, I have nothing to do with ground ops- Fighters only. So I installed the good old Huey and tryed to fly it. What can I say: Finding the correct location in the night is pretty hard. As long as you stay un-detected. After dropping the special ops team I circled over the area and tried to get situation awareness. It was really intense - what is that? A friend? An enemy? ... Oh ... A BTR82! So ... where are my rocket pods? For luck I not only gave my fire teams night vision but laser pointers to. After a while I saw small little laser beams pointing to the enemy locations. That helped a lot. So I decided to switch to the gatling gun pods and sent a hot shower of steel into the direction. That worked well. Step by step our forces got the initiative and pushed the confused enemy out of the urban area ... and under my cover, the special ops team attacked without any casaulties. Finally, the area was completely under control of our forces. In the early morning, more Rangers arrived and the wounded have been evacuated to the nearest front hospital. A great success! So, what can I say... First: Ugra Media has built one of the most beautiful maps for DCS- the Normandy 2.0. The textures are very nice. It´s a European area which means: not endless sand and dessert, but fields, woods and nice villages and cities. The ground is too lighten, and the buildings too dark. But this can easily be done by adjusting the shadow options- Please see Mustangs mod. With a nice LUT filter ( more contrast - less colours) the Normandy map is looking more photo realistic what I really prefer. Even with boring helicopters you can have a really immersive scene and very interesting tasks (evacuate, infiltrate, cover your team - help them to survive) With the right radio comms, authentic actors, DCS can be not immersive, but epic! Cheers TOM PS: I crashed 3 times while I tried to learn the Huey

  13. B-36 cockpit mock-up being built Just wanted to pass this on to the many cockpit builders...there is a B-36 enthusiast building his own place jn the sun! It's not intended as part of a flight sim (yet) but he's got the atmosphere and immersion down pat! He's done some incredible metalwork regarding the canopy and even the fuselage, very interesting to see what is possible if you're somewhat insane!

  15. Oh man! Not the news I wanted to hear on a Friday ... but that's a me problem. @tobi @Eight Ball I was just talking to a DCS friend last night expressing my admiration on you two being in the DCS Community Hall of Fame. Your contributions to this community over the years, and most recently with the Cayuse are nothing short of amazing. Your OH-6 is payware module quality ... no ... superior to many payware modules as-is. I certainly was one of many looking forward to the little bird. Alas, I 100% respect your decision to step away from DCS. I wish you guys nothing but the best. Maybe, someday, the DCS fire will re-ignite. If that day comes, I know your contributions will be epic. You've made my DCS experience much better. Thank you!!

  16. Soo you want the game to take control because you don't want to in certain circumstances?

  17. Yes, but its not full fidelity with a clickable cockpit that I know of. That's why a full fidelity F-15C has been one of the top requested aircraft for years even though there is already a decent Flaming Cliffs 3 version.

  18. I met the General at the University of Stellenbosch many (MANY) years ago when he was doing some speaking tours. It roughly coincided with the time when the university was "gifted" the Mirage F1CZ (tail number 207, I believe). I took these pictures back in 2000 with what was a ridiculously expensive digital camera at the time!

  22. @tobi @Eight Ball I realized that there was never a separate Little Bird thread created when Tobi and Eight Ball started working it. This might have been a reason for the lack of motivation. I have posted their progress photos below but as of late they have stopped development. I feel this was not in the spotlight like it should have been. If I could ask to pull the community together on this one and bounce over to the OH-6A forum for Tobi and Eight Ball. They are ceasing all work on their mods to include the Cayuse and the upcoming Little Bird due to lack of motivation. Not sure if it is lack of motivation internally or from the community, but I thought we could do our best as a community to hold them up and let them know they are wanted and very important to us and our experience in DCS. I created a video for them providing my support. I encourage everyone to drop them a line on their forum below and or create a video if that is your thing. We need guys like this to stick around. They value is tremendous to this community and they are providing content ED has never touched before in DCS.

  25. The "datalink signal" is not a continuous, singular signal; like when your phone indicates signal reception from a cellphone tower. The datalink is composed of discreet radio microbursts of data that are periodically transmitted from various units in the battlespace, which are then processed and displayed in the cockpit based on the data contained within those radio microbursts. There is no indication in the cockpit when the radio signal from Air Traffic Control is lost because there is no continuous signal being broadcast from a single ATC tower. In similar fashion, there is no indication in the cockpit when datalink is lost because there is no continuous datalink radio signal being broadcast from a single unit in the battlespace. If line of sight is lost between your aircraft and a unit transmitting information across the datalink channel, the information received from that particular unit is simply no longer received, just as if you can no longer hear the voice radio transmissions from that unit while still hearing all others on the same frequency.

  26. Sorry but this third party software can not be packaged with DCS, there are many cpu's out there and DCS will work great with many of them, but the main problem you are having is windows 10 does not handle the cpu cores as well as windows 11 does. It can be very CPU dependant. thank you

  31. @Clawhammer Great use of the resource monitor The .miz mission file is presumably fully loaded into memory. I'd be more worried about object models that will only be loaded once new units spawn, terrain sections that will be loaded when units enter the area (like Clawhammer just showed), etc. Opting for an NVMe SSD will give you the peace of mind that you're using the best tool for the job at hand. I've written a small script for server performance monitoring, which will warn you via global chat if the server performance deteriorates. That will at least warn you if the server performance is becoming problematic.

  37. Yeah... the canopy is a thing. I keep forgetting to seal it too, thats normal. If you never lost your canopy, youre not a real Jeff player xD as for the ground weapons, thats an ED issue, since they changed the weapons to their own code, they have been a bit iffy. Also make sure that you have "unrestricted Satnav" turned on in the settings (gameplay or misc). Since the Jeff is technically a red plane, it gets downgraded GPS on blue if the setting is off.

  38. What news on the DTC please ED? I’ve just picked the Apache up again and have been reading through the manual, there’s a bunch of references made about the DTC but having looked for it that functionality doesn’t exist, is it being worked on and if so how many more years will it take? Also is there a campaign planned / being worked on? Thanks

  39. You know, you could just look for a tutorial, skip to the point where the guy makes contact and try to memorise that view... That's a really simple way to see what a good sight picture looks like... And there are tons of examples around... That means you were out of the movable limits for the boom, you are too far forward. Simply slow slight down to get back into position to try again. Not really. It just means you have to get as close as possible to the boom. The tanker does move it a bit. The tanker is 100% rock solid steady. Any movement or chaoticness is caused by you. And like I said, if the boom is inside of your cockpit, you are obviously not in the correct position... There are hundreds of people having had a go at aerial refueling. Some had difficulties, but most if not all eventually mastered the art of refueling, at least once. You on the other hand seem to be the only one that cannot do it even after "hundreds" of attempts. I highly doubt that. It is impossible for the boom in DCS to move around if both aircraft are steady. Either one MUST move around for the boom to move around, and since the tanker is rock steady, there is a 99.9% chance it's you. Or do you have a short track of that too? Please don't take it personally either, but whenever people give you advice, you seem to ignore it, or as stupid as it may sound, you may have some learning difficulties. Obviously it's hard to know if you are actually following the advices or not, but since you keep coming back with the same result, it does seem to be the case. I mean, we cannot fly the aircraft for you or hold your hands, you would need a flight instructor for that. We can only give you advices based on what we see. How you take that advice and put it into use is solely on you. I mean, have you done some of the advice given here? You at least tried to increase the speed of the tanker, so yes, you did actually listen to the advice given here. Though I must say, increasing the speed of the tanker is not the magical solution to this case simply because that is not the root of your problem. But what about wake turbulence? Have you ever tried turning that off? In the tracks you posted one can often see you fly directly in the wake turbulence. At least try to avoid it, or turn it off. It will make your life easier. And what about trimming? You have to make sure that the aircraft flies as straight as possible, this includes not just the pitch but also roll axis. The tracks show you never properly trim your aircraft. Have you tried yet refining your basic flying skills? Manual speed hold and altitude hold and a combination of either? These are vital and essential to manual flying, formation flying and aerial refueling. The tanker is rock solid, any chaos conceived is your movement. Have you already tried tinkering with the axis curves? Everyone has it's own taste, try a few different settings. Are you 100% comfortable with your currenr setting, or did you just set them at the current value because someone told you? What about looking for tutorials? They will show you the sight picture you lack. So that's already 6 advices given to you well within context and quite clearly described what you should be looking for. And the biggest issue here has been adressed by various people several times here, and you yourself keep bringing it up. If you still look at all those advices, ideas and tips as "instruction without context", then I am sorry to say it but I'll have lost all hope in you. Again though, please don't take it in a negative way. It is as frustrating for you to see no progress as it is for some of us.

  45. Hi! Of course you're welcome to ask. First of all let me explain the no specific dates or timetables until things are clear policy: we think it's common in DCS to miss deadlines, which understandably leads to frustration on the customer side. This is not uncommon for software development, even more so for small teams working on complex systems like is the case in DCS. Unpredictable things like team member illnesses, difficulty with implementation of a specific system in DCS, difficult to solve bugs or performance issues can significantly delay a release when working in small, highly specialised teams. Regarding code development, we're currently working on 3 main aspects: F1 radar physics overhaul, F1M menu logic and base input and clickability code overhaul (which is almost complete now). This last part won't be visible to the user but will help a smoother and buggless implementation of the F1M and F-104 input logics. On the 'art' side of things, the F1M cockpit is receiving an overhaul and work. Hope this helps complete the information already provided by @Loukuins
