“Grandpa Flew Phantoms"... “Hey, Grandpa,” the young lad said to me; “tell me a war story. What did you do in the war?” “I flew “Phantoms. Rhino. Big Ugly.” Fascination and concern shone in his eyes. “Phantoms?” “Absolutely,” I said, looking off into the wild blue yonder and the setting sun. “Tell me about the Phantoms, Grandpa.” I thought for a moment about what to say. How much could he really understand? Not much, actually. But kids sure like airplanes, even big kids like Grandpa. I thought a little more about what to tell him: Actually, they’re called F-4s. The term, “F-4,” is like a scientific definition for a giant wild animal that will level your 18-wheel truck if it feels like it. The Phantom was the biggest, loudest, meanest-looking, raw power fighting machine ever built. It was a Man’s jet. Spectators’ innards rumbled when Phantoms took off! Wide-eyed kids instantaneously decided they were going to be a fighter pilot just like me. They didn’t understand about back-seaters and crew chiefs, but they did understand brute power and speed. You could point this airplane at the moon and for a while you thought you were going to get there. It went a mile per breath at high cruise. A mile per breath! Phantom. The big leagues. Normal earth people never witness the splendor nor feel the terror of Big Ugly closing for guns. Over the years, my jet fought them all: Tomcats, Eagles, Falcons, Hornets, F-5s, F-106s, A-4s, A-7s, F-111s, Buffs, B-1s, U-2s, even the F-105. Yeah, my pilots lost some, but won plenty! Don’t try to run from a Thud. To win with “Big Ugly,” use power, altitude, vertical, surprise. Don’t get slow; speed is life. Cut across the circle. Don’t bury the nose. Kill the bandit now. Take that slashing gunshot. Don’t say the pilot cheated; he got the shot. You can’t outrun the missile. That magnificent airplane remained a major player in our nation’s defense for decades, despite sharing birthdays with early pocket calculators. Is anybody still driving a ’65 Chevy? It’s the people who bring this aircraft to life and provide the brainpower. A roomful of Phantom crews sets a unique social environment. Seemingly insignificant behaviors and unusual events create career-spanning nicknames and legends. “Two Dogs” shot the tanker. “Tripod” kissed the colonel’s dog. They remember forever! Don’t believe the dreaded words, “Your secret is safe with me.” Don’t point fingers, for if you live by the sword, you will die by it. It’s a rare combination of he-man pilots whose egos, fangs, and foolishness are tempered by an inseparable conscience embodied in the blind, trusty WSO who almost equally share credit for the fabulous success of this durable-crew airplane. It’s a we airplane – not an I, not a me, but we airplane. “We shot the drone. We didn’t go out of our airspace – not us.” The new stuff extends off duty as well. We were at the movies when the windows shattered. You get the idea. Riding in the “pit,WSOs are among the bravest souls on earth, betting their lives and reputation on the driver up front who will take them who knows where at a moment’s notice. The backseater lives by his cunning, competing against advanced technology with systems as old as himself. His understanding of human thought processes makes great WSO’ing an art form. He must be ready for any eventuality and provide timely information in a logical, understandable sequence for the multitasked Phantom driver to digest in small pieces. The key is to make the driver, “Mr. Sometimes Macho,” think it was his idea in the first place. The WSO must sense when his inputs have gone unheeded, yet never waste a second with unnecessary or mistimed information. He must find the target and get the frontseater’s eye on it. Then it’s grunt time, fighting the Gs while the animal frontseater maneuvers for the kill. No whimpering gents; we’re riding a Rhino! Sometimes we become the Rhino! A flight of F-4s paired against multiple bogies creates instant comm jamming when only half the crewmen are talking. Hit the merge and they’re all start yakking away, like a gaggle of geese sorting out the variables. Phantoms somehow excel in defeating large numbers of superior aircraft under severe comm conditions. The more targets, the better. Rhinos charge the fight, shoot bogies and accept a few losses. There’s no way to recall everything that happened in a multi-ship merge, but each crewman brings back various recollections to defend vigorously at the debrief. At the height of the discussion, several pilots talk at once while gesticulating hands “gun” each other. The WSOs nod approvingly. Somehow, most participants emerge from the debrief with the positive notion that “we did fairly well…considering the circumstances.” Computers changed the flying professional, but an evolution of slippery Phantom tactics continued to confound the sometimes embarrassed good pilots in modern machines. There was a lot of challenge. You were always up against supposedly better aircraft. Phantom crews shriek with delight, like the wide-eyed kid, when describing unobserved stern missile launches or tracking gunshots against a magic dream machine. Yet, satisfaction is rarely displayed in the presence of your opponent. The adversary must think that Phantoms gunning Hornets is fairly common, which it is, if you don’t keep exact score. Let’s see now, 14 years and 2,500 hours flying Phantoms. No wars, only one engine problem, only one hydraulic failure (on the ground). Hot brakes once (my fault). Never lost a generator, no gear problems, never diverted, two fire lights (both false), no high speed aborts, can’t remember my last air abort (it’s been years). Can’t remember my last ground abort, either. Never had a compressor stall. Killed a horse once. Popped circuit breakers a few times (usually they reset). Took the cable once for antiskid (no big deal). What a great airplane! Dependable with a capital D. Weather? No problem. Ice? Wind? No problem. The F-4 has done the job as an all-weather, day/night fighter extraordinaire. Big ugly. Been my friend. Never scared me, never hurt me. Knock on wood. I suppose we’ll launch missiles at her at Tyndall – from some new magic jet. They’ll miss; too bad. Or, Big ugly will drag them back home stuck in her sides like porcupine quills. And someday we’ll look back at our Rhino pictures and remember her as we do steam locomotives. I never knew an engineer or assembler who built the Phantom, and probably never will. But thanks, folks! Helluva job! What a great airplane! It’s been my everlasting pleasure and privilege to fly her. You just can’t imagine. “Hey, Grandpa,” the little voice urges. “I thought you were going to tell me a war story. I began to tell. “So there we were, trying to dig this F-111 out of the canyon. We spot him flying along the cliff, fast and too low for a missile shot…” I swallowed hard and lost my voice there for a second. Kitchen clatter broke the silence with the distant call, “Food’s ready!” Okay, guy,” I said quietly. “It’s time to wash your hands. Your mom’s calling for supper.” “I didn’t hear her,” he claimed, with a twinkle in his eye and a knowing smile like my old buddies had. Food’s ready tiger; wash up. I’ll be along shortly.” A couple of minutes slid by. Then I heard the voice from a distance. Grandpa? Grandpa. You okay?” A tear plopped on the window sill. “Yeah, yeah, be there in a minute. Just checking the moon.” By Major Tom Tolman.3 points

as someone who studied and listened to various Iranian fighter pilot interviews I can tell that there is a misconception about level of skill of Iraqi Air Force. Iraqis were very skilled and experienced pilots they had powerful radar networks including good GCI allowing them to fly deep within Iran. they had plenty of good combat experience against Israel even more combat experience than Iranian pilots, based on interviews with former Iranian SIGNIT/ELINT officers of Iran, their GCIs somehow could get intel on presence of an F-14s in some instance which led to dozens of mission abort for Iraqi side. it was very very common that lots of Iraq planes jettisoned their bombs as soon as locked by an F-14 (commonly mentioned, mentioned by Shahram Rostami as well) they performed cooperative maneuvers to evade and destroy a considerable number of Iranian radar installations, which led to Iranian air defense units work together with the air force, The Operation Fath Ol Mobin proved cooperation of air defense and air offense can be game changer sometimes. anyway back to the topic , Iraqis also had their own techniques of evading the F-14 and AWG-9 (as described by one of our former pilots whose name I forgot) i.e performing ZigZag which we call Cranking to the left and right but interesting part is, these maneuvers did not help them as they got close as below 20 nautical miles, missiles fired within that range had a really good PK and I don't remember reading somewhere they miss within that window, except Colonel Mazandarani's Phoenix was missed because he fired the phoenix at a fast and cold target despite it was within 15nm range and he almost got detained for that. interesting part is they have done lots of these tactics using the old SPO-10 RWRs , they heavily relied on their GCI as EWRs however. Iraqis also used ECM a lot, the most powerful Jammers used by Iraqi airforce were the ones used on their Mirage-F-1s, these jammers managed to disable many of our HAWK systems but due to the fact that the ground based radar installations were exposed to hot and humid weather, based on interviews and mentions in Tom Cooper's book ; the Iraqis used very advanced ECMs against AWG-9 but the it could easily counter the jam and do it's job without any issue. I don't really like the way some people want to represent the phoenix as a slow fat brick only able to crash into straight flying big bombers. Phoenix is a very capable missile, and it is proven to be a very good and reliable weapon against agile fighters even in DCS with current state. regarding missile kinematic performance I have almost 0 data to verify how accurate it is performing vs real life but I believe the PK of DCS Phoenix will significantly improve once we get a much realistic or advanced missile API. personally I manage to fire the phoenixes against AI above 30k feet and Mach 0.9 and I always get +90% PK, I also have a good PK with it down on the deck , if fired within NEZ I always score a kill (~7nm). If you guys are interested in hearing first hand memories of our Iranian Tomcat pilots I highly suggest you to follow this youtube channel , it is in Persian but using a powerful AI service such as Gboard you can translate and use the details provided in this channel : Alireza Hamzei is a retired F-14 test and instructor pilot he has a youtube channel and he used to interview veteran pilots of Iran-Iraq War : https://www.youtube.com/@AlirezaHamzei/videos the content or the details shared by our veterans are valid they are not propaganda bold claims because Iranian national airforce was always opposed by Islamic leadership, the leaders always treated as our airforce pilots with poor trust and always disregarded their credits, they gave all the credits to the IRGC and corrupt IRGC officers who were poorly trained with awful results in war, they always insulted and discredited by IRGC and religious figures so it was their own benefit to share the public non but honest reports to gain the true reputation they deserve. I'm so sorry for the long message but I hope it helps the community. Sincerely3 points

Tacview 1.9.3 is available now! Download: https://tacview.net/download • Release Date: Wed, 24 Jan 2024 • Operating System: Windows® 32-bit / 64-bit • File Size: 775.0 MB First, we would like to wish you all a happy new year 2024! Thank you very much for all the invaluable feedback and support you provided during the last year. We appreciate every community addon, simulator improvement and bug report. While we do not have the time to answer as many of your questions as we would like, we are doing our best to take all your feedback into account. Some improvements have already been implemented, other are coming, and some which require more thoughts and work will be probably come in Tacview 2. Speaking of Tacview 2, as you can guess seeing the slow pace of change in Tacview 1.9, our focus has now mainly shifted to the future: Progress has been steady over the past year. So, here's a glimpse of what we've achieved so far in Tacview 2 pre-alpha: The new 3D engine is operational: It is a blend of modern technology and simplicity: Fully multithreaded and built on Vulkan, it's optimized for performance and portability. While it can display both photo-real and synthetic data effectively, its focus remains to render a clear view of the battlefield, even on modest systems. Most features have been implemented and we can already display as many simultaneous 3D and 2D views as we want, being limited only by the host system capabilities. The UI engine is up and running. Unified across all devices, from PC to tablets, it will provide a coherent user experience. We've made progress in the UX design, and the final UI implementation will follow later this year. And yes, customizable skins and dark mode will eventually be an option! All terrain engine core features have been implemented, such as level-of-detail, subdivision, and clipping. This means more details and improved performance compared to Tacview 1.9 – think of zooming in from space on a pebble! The Earth's ellipsoid shape is now accurately drawn: its shape, distances and properties are visually accurate. Plus, the sun and moon positions are realistically simulated which is useful for both dogfight and navigation. On the engine side Tacview 2 is fully multithreaded to provide improved performance on modern hardware and to give even smoother experience compared to Tacview 1. It is currently being developed and tested on both on Windows and Linux (such as Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian), to guarantee portability and towards other operating systems such as macOS, iOS, and Android in the future. Tacview 2 is all about modding! It is a bag of Lego: It offers the fundamental blocks to record data and to run debriefings. Everything we use and see on screen, from the free camera to the dogfight control zone display are addons written in Lua, JavaScript, C++, C#, and Python. Most things you see on screen can be modified, improved, and extended by you, the community. Sharing addons will be much more streamlined: you will only have to download and double click on a zip file, and Tacview will take care of the rest. Later we will also support the Steam Workshop, so we can install new maps, objects, and tools with just a click! I can’t wait to put Tacview 2 into your hands and see what the community is going to do with it! So, what are the next steps? Telemetry Engine & ACMI Data Format: We are currently developing the new telemetry engine and improved ACMI data format improving upon the existing generation for greater performance, accuracy, and flexibility. Data Import/Export: Implementation of telemetry data import and export is underway. Yes, Tacview 2 will seamlessly read Tacview 1.9 data. Online Debriefing: First, we are going to make Tacview 2 compatible with Tacview 1 online debriefing. Then we are going to improve it further to allows automatic background download of the telemetry data. No more tedious manual file sharing between the participants. Final terrain engine: We will then work on the final phase of the terrain engine, enabling texture and elevation data streaming from your favorite servers such as Bing Maps, NASA, and MapQuest, among others. The final touch to reach an alpha version will be the new UI. Written from the ground up, it will be modern, clean, and intuitive. It will improve on Tacview’s strengths, such as non-bloated design, while offering a more intuitive organization of the tools of and options which will both work as well on a PC wide screen and a tablet touch screen. Best wishes, and happy flying!

Its still going Added washing stains, reduced the walkway dust, fixed the supercharger intake weld seam (horrors... horrors), fixed missing fabric dents between controlsurface spars, redone tailsection/stabilizer layout. Added dryness to rim of mudd. Tried around with spray paint application and way to imitate that coarse effect. Eventually might try a new brush, but atm, noise does it. Still some normal map things to fix ive missed...2 points

First of all, I want to point out that DCS is not modeled after other flight sim games. The ED devs do their own research and have their own SMEs that they may take input from. Just because another game does it a specific way does not mean it is correct or accurate. That is all I will say about that because this is not the place to make comparisons. (and it is a violation of forum Rule 1.15) Having said that, the CZ option should be on the HSD if the criteria has been met for its display (such as if a cursor slew has been incurred). If it is not, then there may be a bug. Regarding the question about TMS Aft, this is a common point of confusion. A double press of TMS Aft is not a universal Cursor Zero option, nor is Cursor Zero a feature of the TGP. Cursor Zero is a function within the F-16 avionics as a means to reset the applicable cursor slews to zero and is primarily available as the "CZ" OSB option on the FCR, HSD, and TGP MFD formats. However, a hands-on CZ "shortcut" using TMS Aft is available under the following conditions: TGP is set as SOI TGP is in SLAVE mode (i.e., not in AREA or POINT track) Since the TGP is typically in AREA or POINT track if TGP was SOI (because the player has likely been using it), the first TMS Aft sets the TGP to SLAVE, and the second performs the Cursor Zero since the 2x conditions have now been met. However, if the TGP is made SOI and the player does not enter AREA or POINT track, then the first TMS Aft will command Cursor Zero since the 2x conditions above are met. But again, these two conditions are only available as a shortcut when using the TGP. Otherwise, the only means to command Cursor Zero without the TGP is via the MFD OSB option on the FCR or HSD MFD formats. I hope this clarifies the logic.2 points

Hi, I know you have your priorities and your limited hands on solving bugs and issues. But it will reduce the user frustration to see in every patch an ancient bug resolved and knowing that in the next update another ancient bug for a different airframe is resolved and the same for the next update. So every user can expect one (at least one) old bug solved of their favorite helo/plane for the next 6 months or one year. I reviewed the change logs in every update and in all of them there is a lot of work done, of course, but there is always the feeling that some planes received more attention than others, even when there are reported bugs for years. I'm sure that focus in one (just one) of them for a different airframe in every patch will not disturb so much your development roadmap. And I'm not referring about eternal bugs discussions about 1 RPM or 5s more and the engine is death, I mean radios not working, incorrect bind controls, graphical glitches, etc. What I'm looking for is not a punctual action, but a scheduled task that we can track. At this moment we only have your words (which I appreciate) but few facts (which I appreciate more) I tried to be not rude, but I'm not English speak native, so thank you for understanding.2 points

True! I was referring to the "latest and greatest" and the "no matter the cost" vibe I got from OP. Regarding raw power you can hardly argue against a 4090. Power per $, there are better options of course! Oh and one note to the cooling of the 7000 series AMD cpus. They have exceptional thick (and bad) heat spreaders, resulting in a poor heat conductivity. For that reason, you won't get any benefit from water-cooling them. (IUnless you behead them and go direct die cooling). So any decent 250W class Air-Cooler will do.2 points

Operation Jupiter has been updated. It contains 3 missions: A template type mission for pre-invasion. Ground has radars and flak only. No set ground targets. Intended for dogfight mayhem. A template type mission for post-invasion (very similar to the old Operation Jupiter layout). Ground has radars and flak only. No set ground targets. Intended for dogfight mayhem. Adlertag an objective based mission that runs for about 3 hours loosely based on 'Eagle Day' Download is attached You will need Normandy 2.0 and WW2 Assets pack If some warbird pilots could give them a try and provide feedback that would be great. Hopefully you like them. Edit: All other missions have been removed from user files as they are broken2 points

Maybe change the title to "I personally prefer the TF-30s to sound more like it does on the Youtube", which is fine and fair. Then others can look at it and go: "Yo man, power to you, nice job on the audio re-tune, but I prefer to go with the guys that have high quality archive audio of the real jet." Just seems like a more pleasant basis for interaction to me, idk.2 points

Exactly, Aerges will simulate only what the spanish F1 versions had to offer and this was very clearly communicated from the very beginning. By the way, ED´s F-16C follows a very similar logic...no fancy Harpoons, Penguins or Sparrows. And just as a friendly reminder because it quickly gets annoying to have to scroll over all the F1 unrelated stuff posted above. This is the "F1 Roadmap" section and no chit chat or wishlist area so can we please stay on topic and talk about upcoming systems which we can actually find on the to do list? Thank you.2 points

The super human AI in warbirds Today I would like to talk about the AI, particularly in the spitfire. Those who've play in the war-birds will have at some point decided to fly against one of these monsters and most likely lost a lot of times against them. Now, what is apparent in DCS is that the AI makes shots based on computer calculations (obviously) which makes them extremely accurate. Put this in the spitfire and you've created something obscene. I'm pretty sure all DCS planes in WW2 work like this but combined with the turn rate of the spitfire you created something simply built different. There's no margin of error in accuracy or burst length limitations built into the AI so often you get sniped out of the skies by an AI using single shot mode without the sight of any tracers whizzing past your cockpit. Two factors that can save your life. The AI can use single shot mode by only firing when it believes it has a 100% accurate gun solution. But there's more... The AI pilot can see through the cockpit which means his vision isn't obscured when pulling high deflection shots. See the image below... Now you might say you can do this as a human... But a human will use GUESSWORK to make the shots and not a ballistic computer. A human will lose sight... And a human will spend ammunition and release a stream of tracers which you can "react" to. So, why isn't any of this incorporated into the way the AI behaves? Why can't the AI release a burst rather than a single shot? Why doesn't the AI fire inaccurate shots that will miss (dependent on set difficulty)? Why can the AI accurately shoot while not having visual of what it is shooting at? It either feels like you're fighting a toaster or the terminator and there seems to be nothing in between.1 point

This is how far I've come over the past 3 weeks or so. The biggest parts of the structure are close to completion. Now I'm trying to find ways to keep it pure. I don't want a keyboard shelf because I'm hoping to have all the essential controls (and eventually all of the accurate panels) on board, so I won't need to break the immersion using one. I'll likely build a seat for it from similar materials, but with decent padding, because of simplicity. So far, quite a challenge. There are very few square angles on this thing. Almost every flat surface has an odd angle, including a downhill slope on the side consoles front to back at (best I could measure) of about 1 1/4" over their length of nearly 30". I've obsessed over drawings and many other diagrams that came from these forums and other sources. It turns out that the diagrams in the back of the NATOPS manual is actually very close when blown up 400%, but not exact. I used the drawings as a template laid out on the sheets of 3/4" MDF that I would cut up to build the structure, measuring angles instead of just trusting the drawings and assuming their scale would be 100% accurate. So far, off to the races! I'll post some pictures of the reference material I used, and then what it's turned into so far.1 point

Allow us the possibility to translate campaign texts as before. I no longer buy campaigns because we can no longer translate texts in the mission editor. Before, I would buy a campaign, modify the texts one by one using a translator to translate them into my language. Now we can't do that anymore because the TRIGGERS no longer appear in the mission editor. It's a shame not to develop something that allows us to translate missions; it's a barrier to buying campaigns, and I'm not the only one. How many thousands of people don't buy because they don't speak English? I bought 3 campaigns in 3 years that I managed to translate entirely, but now I've seen that we no longer have access to the texts in the triggers, so it's impossible to translate. Therefore, I no longer buy campaigns. It's really unfortunate.1 point

very practical method. during the snap view recording process, it is possible to be more precise by zooming in to the maximum view: the buttons used to move the camera are less sensitive, making the process easier.1 point

Positioning is correct just not the elevation of the ALS Decision bar, needs to be on an elevated platform over the roadway. Nice find 2Alpha1 point

So what? Leaving your house is statistically detrimental to your health. Would you ban all people from leaving their homes henceforth? Whether it's a good idea or not doesn't diminish the fact that it's the prerogative of the mission maker to have a say in how his mission is used. He has invested his free time to make it, so he has all the right to make the call, whether it's a good call or a bad one regarding what aspect ever is completely irrelevant to that argument.1 point
