It's our first proper Cold War theatre between NATO and the USSR (even as a modern day map - owing to how sparsely populated the area is, meaning changes are going to be relatively insignificant), no other map comes close. The area is a pretty strategic one (namely due to the Soviet/Russian Northern Fleet and its sizeable SSBN force) and has a very large military presence. It's perfect for NATO carrier operations and had the Cold War gone hot, it would most likely be the place the F-14, A-6 and A-7 would've fought over (among others). Several of our assets and modules were/are based here, especially for REDFOR. It's a major setting in Red Storm Rising and it features in several other titles. The map's geography is fairly unique compared to other maps (closest one is South America on the South Atlantic map). If anyone is interested, I am currently in the process of making a .kmz showing numerous locations (airbases, naval bases, SAM sites, munitions depots and other military and civilian points of interest), with the goal of trying to produce a realistic order of battle for the region.6 points

Probably not with the initial release version, haven't found a suitable model. And I don't want to delay the release because of this. Thank you! Nope, I don't give release dates. I release my assets when I think they're good to go, and my release log should make it evident that my process is pretty efficient, if I may say so myself. Thanks!5 points

I see no reason to push the creator. He never delayed the release of his creations.5 points

I know YMMV et al - but I am really enjoying early access of ED's modules - probably more-so than if I had access to the full module immediately. I was thinking about this last night. If ED had released AH64 in it's full module - would I have had as much entertainment with the Kilo's - or with the Lima's with the range target and fire, or would I have gone full FCR and pretty much stuck with that? Having the features creep in over time allows me to get the hype on the Apache when it was first released, then get the hype again as more features are added to it - instead of just a single bit of excitement. The challenge of trying to take out a 'veteran Tunguska' with laser guided missiles instead of just switching straight to Lima's for a year or so too. It also gave me time to more thoroughly learn the different systems so I'm not as overwhelmed. I'm convinced that I'll have far more use from all the systems by the time it completes early access than just getting access to the entire ship straight up. Seems like my $'s go further this way. I acknowledge that not all people would be in the same boat - heck I may be unusual and unique like this for all I know - but the concept of early access definitely works for me. I also acknowledge that EA isn't without it's pitfalls (bugs, early flight module issues, who would forget the 'SAS Saturated' beeps , etc) - but the gain definitely outweighs the pain. Thanks for making Early Access a thing ED.4 points

Yeah, I'm anxious for it but know it will be released when it meets the their quality bar. It isn't like devs think "the product is good to go, lets not release it for another month to make em wait". I swear it looks like some think that sometimes. The problem probably stems from teasers that by their nature don't show flaws or unfinished bits. People assume the whole product as good as the trailer. My project managers always knew exactly what they could and couldn't show to clients to leave the best impression.4 points

Hello @TLTeo, This is known, the radar is still heavily WIP, and this will be fixed when the radar is completed. Thanks for taking the time to create a clear and straightforward report with a TRK tho.4 points

So I will be the first to say I fly the F-18, Apache, and F-14 routinely, BUT, I am really looking forward to the C-130 coming out. I have my days where I would gladly fill the role online of a chilled flight doing some AAR operations, combat cargo drops, or moving supplies to a base to beef up the front lines when the new dynamic campaign generator comes out. This brings me to opening up for discussion, what other military cargo transports would the community be interested in and what roles would they use them for beyond just transporting cargo. I would like to kick it off with a new found favorite I have thoroughly enjoyed flying on MSFS and researching in general, the DHC-4 Caribou. This aircraft would be one hell of a plane to bring to DCS. It has one of the best short takeoff and landing capabilities for troop transport, para drops, cargo to hard to reach locations, and even air to air refueling in its infancy during Vietnam. It was used by many nations including but not limited to Australia, Canada, and the US. It has seen combat in many regions and is hailed in many ways the best cargo plane for austere environments needing aircraft that can land and take off from them. It has the looks and sound of an old WW2 bomber and the rugged reliability of a C-47 and C-130. Slow, but one hell of a reliable aircraft and a cockpit only a connoisseur of vintage radial enthusiast would appreciate. The first time I walked into her in VR and climbed up into the cockpit, I immediately got the Millennium Falcon vibe where Han and Chewy where the only ones who thought she was the most beautiful thing to fly. I really hope to see this legend flying in DCS someday and think that its capabilities would be more than a benefit to DCS and the upcoming cargo and AAR roles that will follow after the C-130 is released. Below is a video of me taking her up for a spin over Creech from start to finish followed with some historical photos during Vietnam. Let me know what other cargo aircraft you are interested in and hopefully this thread can turn into a foundation for ED and third party devs to see what we are fond of and what might be a good choice for future cargo aircraft. null null3 points

By the way, should you encounter any reference pictures of the S-350 carrying 9M100 tubes, please share them. The 50P6 should be able to carry 8 x quad 9M100 tubes (32 missiles). But I have yet to see a picture of it.3 points

Based on their comments they are building a raw audio library for emitters which will integrate with DCS core. Between that and the physically based radar model, I think we're seeing revolutionary simulation overhauls, trying to integrate with core spaghetti code that's 20+ years old - I don't envy the team that has to deal with that, and I can imagine every five minute task takes an hour hahaha3 points

The real aircraft has what you'd call in windows mouse acceleration, basically is sense pressure so can be extremely fast when needed or extremely precise if force applied is subtle. In this video you can kind of see how the tdc accelarates in certain moments.3 points

Your first problem is that your sight gyros got toppled (you need to close sight when turning more than 60 deg or banking more than 30 deg). To fix this, shut down all weapons systems, wait for 3 minutes, turn them back on and wait another 3 minutes for them to allign. For getting the tone, you need to press UP LONG. UP SHORT will allign helicopter laterally, long press will tell Petrovich to drop the nose towards your aiming point, but his piloting skills just suck. I find it easier to move sight up from the target until I get the tone and then drag missile down onto target. Third problem- look above (besides, Hind really does not like to hover, especially when heavy) Lastly, go to CPG aiming station tab and bind "aiming station joystick" axes.3 points

Hello everyone, I did not have time to provide photos and plans of the airfields present on the Normandy 2 maps. I will try to do my best. In the DCS newsletter of Friday May 26, 2023, I learned that the developers are improving the airfields. In the meantime, it would be necessary, if it is not in progress, to remove all the trees and bushes which are on the airfields ! It would also be necessary not to place so many control towers! In general, there was only one on the permanent airfields or not at all like on the English and American ALGs in England and Normandy! This would free up some space on the map. (to create other important airfields for example!) I will provide a map of the airfields in England that were used for the Normandy landings. I think this map has a lot of potential ! She is very beautiful. But I sincerely think that making the most historic airfields possible would be of great interest and would make it the most beautiful WW2 map of DCS! Thank you to the developers for this magnificent map and good luck for the future !3 points

I put together another brief video, this time showing missile performance vs *Time*. It's often taken from granted, but I'm finding this aspect, or the lack of understanding of it, to be one of the main causes when people call the Phoenix "bad" or "broken". TLDW: in 30", a Phoenix travels ~10nm. An R-27ER covers almost 17nm, but the longer the range, the greater the advances of the Phoenix. Therefore, manipulating geometry (e.g. cranking) helps to offset the disadvantages in terms of acceleration, top speed, and trajectory.3 points

Per thread title, with radar on standby you still get to scan and lock targets, take missile shots, and guide missiles. The only differences compared to TX are a) the close combat mode does not work and b) the intercept/lock HUD symbology (including velocity/distance scale/radar gunsight) are not displayed. Steps to replicate: just do not switch the radar to TX and go into a fight. Track attached for demonstration. Radar_bug.trk3 points

Given ORT’s level of engagement, humor, and constant communications on this forum I for one am quite happy to wait as long as it takes for the release. The other Devs should take notice to the professionalism ORT is showing when it comes to development. (I do have my gut feeling that we wouldn’t be waiting much longer though )3 points

The 96L6 radar can optionally be used with an S-350 battery. And of course the S-300 or S-400. But in this case I've made it for the S-350.3 points

The Kola region is an excellent location because of its size, terrain, military importance, history, and layout. The landmass is fairly large which good by itself, but then when considering the vast sea around it, the map bounds could potentially be very large (I know they've given us a boundary, but if there is water beyond those bounds then the map can be considered even bigger). This will be the map for realistic carrier and naval battles since the Black Sea can't support carriers in real life and Hormuz as modeled is one sided in terms of naval warfare and wouldn't feature carriers naturally (vs Iran). Syria's waters are carrier accessible but not really the place to expect large naval battles. The surrounding sea also means that threats can potentially be omnidirectional realistically. While there is a clear red and blue side on land, the seas could be more easily contested or used as a way around land based defenses. This is good for mission and campaign design. The region is also a good location for historical and modern scenarios. While the Cold War did not go hot, there was a large military presence there. That is still true today and with some imagination it's easy to come up with a situation where tensions escalate into conflict. Or the map could just be used for lower intensity saber rattling, things like bomber intercepts and border intrusions.3 points

Hello everyone! During 2022-2023 I’ve monitored (from time to time) flight trackers (like Flightradar24.com) and I think that military callsigns seen there could be useful for DCS developers and/or addon makers to make ATC and military communications in DCS much more interesting and realistic. As I’ve monitored flight trackers not 24/7, these callsigns represent just a portion (although in some cases there are plenty of them) of callsigns used by Air Forces. Below are ONLY callsigns which have been used in Europe/Mediterranean/Middle East in 2022 and 2023/up to now. I don’t really know if they are relevant for CONUS or other regions. But they will surely do for Caucasus and Syria maps (I think Persian Gulf too). There may be mistakes. I’d appreciate if somebody adds other callsigns and/or corrects mistakes. What to be noted here? - Lots of callsigns for different Air Forces operating in Europe/Mediterranean/Middle East and represented in DCS for A400M, A330 MRTT, B-52, C-130/KC-130, KC-135, Eurofighter Typhoon, F-15E, F-16, Tornado, helicopters (less callsigns for other types); - Special information (units etc.) if identified; - Some callsigns really fill gaps in DCS (most notably German Tornado IDS and Belgian/Netherlands’ F-16s, Belgian/Italian/RNAF/RNoAF/USMC C-130s/KC-130s); - Quite a lot of callsigns for addons (A330, A400M, Eurofighter Typhoon, P-8A, RC-135W). 1) will it need charging first? It will have like 50-80% , but it doesn't take long to charge up fully and you might as well prior to setup. Just toss it on the dock. 2) I ordered a link cable as well, how does that work, is it power from the PC? It allows you to use the QP as a PCVR device, so you get the benefits of that. Having a hard connection and the ability to use the PC oculus software to change various settings is ideal for flight sims. You get power from the PC, but not enough to keep the headset charged indefinitely. See my first post and subsequent posts throughout this thread that link a usb-c hub (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BS9C9RBZ?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details) that allows you to play in PCVR mode indefinitely. As far as settings, I linked the settings from another forum member in my original post and would recommend that to you as well. 3) Will there be any conflict from currently installed software for my G2? Do I need to uninstall anything? Probably not, but I always prefer to have a clean canvas when switching ecosystems. Personally, I would recommend uninstalling anything related to WMR first. Just my preference and it is easy enough to reinstall if you go back to the G2. 4) I use OpenXR in DCS, via the shortcut, is that dispensed with now? DCS MT and MSFS launches in OpenXR natively, no need to tinker. For IL-2, I manually drop in the OpenXR .dll from https://gitlab.com/znixian/OpenOVR/-/tree/openxr 5) what software do I need? Its Occulus, so do I need something from them? Oculus Home software for your PC, Oculus Tool Tray for easily changing settings and setting up profiles that launch per game https://www.apollyonvr.com/oculus-tray-tool (or use native Oculus Debug Tool), and the mobile app for initial setup (and phone notifications, which I find very helpful). See original post for link to forum member's settings for the PC software. 6) What will I need the hand controllers for, I dont use mine at all in DCS currently with the G2...are they required for set up only in this case? ( I wont be using for anything other than DCS seated) You don't have to use the hand controllers. You can use the headset volume buttons, your mouse, or setup hand tracking inside the headset (pretty nice actually). If you want to access your desktop through Quest Link (the cable you're plugging in and then communicating with the PC software), you have to use the controller to click the DESKTOP button. Hand tracking doesn't work for that. But after that, I just power off the controller and start whatever games I'm playing. Or you can just bypass the virtual access to the desktop and use your PC monitor and mouse to launch whatever. That will make more sense once you're actually setup.2 points

C-130s and troop transport helos already provide useful functions in co-op. I am hosting Vietnam/Cold War multiplayer missions right now where the C-130 can drop a complete set of crates for building a forward operating base for the helos or a whole bunch of infantry to help out with CAS. These same missions also permit AC-130 armament/operations. While it works best in a team/co-op environment, there is fun to be had flying a C-130 by yourself against the AI. Single player/co-op missions can easily be scripted where the C-130 is at the heart of mission success and require flying low and/or evasively just like helo transport missions.2 points

You can do that via SteamVR but mind you the performance will be suboptimal still compared to simply playing 2D - you need some resources on the GPU to run the SteamVR in reasonably high resolution to warrant readability of the game mirror and the game itself on top of it - if you get Virtual Desktop on steam you can also try doing a "fake VR" - run the game in 2D, tie the game mirror to follow your head movements and then you can run OpenTrack in the background with SteamVR as source of the head movement with 1:1 curves. Regular 2D curves need to be applied for regular "VR theatre" viewing. @Eugel2 points

I both do and do not want ED to know how much I'd be willing to pay for a full-fidelity MiG-25. (Hint - it's a lot). It is hands-down my grail aircraft for DCS. Well... that and a MiG-21-93. The MiG-25 would be a phenomenal addition to the growing Cold War roster, and an excellent adversary for both the F-4 and the F-14, depending on the era and setting. I think it would be an absolute monster in Cold War multiplayer, especially the PD with look-down radar capability. Obviously the MiG-25 is no dogfighter, but it would make for some really interesting hunter/hunted scenarios, bomber escort, high-alt reconnaissance and/or fleet defence. Especially if aircraft like the B-58 Hustler, Tu-22 Blinder and SR-71 were modelled along with it as AI assets.2 points

Alot of interesting scenarios can be set up in this map. Air and naval warefare with NATO and Russia, a Russian/Finnish land invasion or some sort of NATO training with USMC, British or other NATO troops in the artic -just to mention something. The Norwegian Airforce have operated Spitfire, Sabre, F-5, Huey and F-16 which are all modules in DCS. Then you have the Finnish airforce with its F-18 and Sweden with its Viggen, appropriate for a cold war scenario. I hope we can have som good multiplayer 2-5 player coop-missions on this map. I'm looking forward to do low level formation flight in between the fjords and mountains. Something to make this map stand out as someone mentioned here is to do the lighting correctly. In the winter you have the long dark days with slight daylight for a couple of hours. In the summer the sun is up all day. I guess it is not possible to make, but can the skies be filled with some sort of northern light? That would truly be amazing.2 points

Last state of FAQ was September 2021 and it is false in a few pretty important points now. 1. Let's start with: "It is slated to leave Early Access as early through 2021 as is possible." - no comment here 2. There already are 3 campaigns included for the module (2 by HB, 1 by kaba). 3. Jester already can operate the LANTIRN. 4. We already can jump between seats in MP. 5. We already have TWS-A, AVIA, NAVGRID and EIG for F110. 6. I'd add some notes about the current Tomcat compatibility with SC. 7. Since the Stennis got updated to SC level (features depending on module ownership) the note "The free version of the USS Forrestal will have feature parity with the USS Stennis at minimum once complete. " can be misleading. Also we already got Forrestal. 8. Please put a note on a planned Jester 2.0 update. 9. Link to the AIM-54 white paper is no longer valid or applicable. 10. We already have pilot/RIO body in cockpit. 11. Some parts of dynamic cockpit are already there. 12. Please change Tomcat Tutorials link to the first post: https://forum.dcs.world/topic/224050-f-14-how-to-and-tutorial-links/ 13. Same with paintkit: https://forum.dcs.world/topic/200988-f14-skinners-thread-paintkit-in-1st-post/ 14. There are much more DLC Tomcat campaigns now. 15. HB store is not working currently. 16. Proper redeem HB license link: https://forum.dcs.world/topic/189443-how-to-redeem-your-heatblurcom-purchase/ Thanks2 points

One thing to make it different from the other maps is that there is no night during summer and no day during winter.2 points

ED had the following to say in their Newsletter from January 13th, 2023: "Radar Update. In parallel with refactoring the Flight Model and FCS, a refactoring of the Hornet radar is well underway. Key elements to address are improving the look-down, PRF, scan azimuth and more in order to offer improved detection and target tracking simulation." So, ED said it is "well underway." Then again, ED went completely radio silent on this topic. Same goes for the promised white paper regarding radar performance. I would also like to hear where we currently stand with the progress made on the radar. Any official statement on this? Any news to share would be very much appreciated... Thank you. In fact, I do believe that the user base has increased over the years, here is a chart I made measuring the yearly transactions on the ED Store (it does not include transactions at Steam or other stores): This data is based on the transaction ID of purchases that I've made on the Xmas sale of every year so far. Of course it does not tell us anything about what items are sold on each transaction, but it gives an indication of the volumes sold over the years. Only 2022 broke the increasing trend, most likely because the war shifted purchase prorities for a lot of people, myself included. So, my belief is that there are almost certainly more than a million DCS usesr out there.2 points

Thanks. I think it mostly affects people who fast align their INS and switch to IFA as it relies on GPS updates. This is how I usually start my aircraft. The mission is much more playable with a slow align and NAV setting for the time being.2 points

Africa is a stunningly beautiful continent with lots of interesting conflicts and scenarios for DCS. Also, the french Air Power commitment in Africa was and is more than just Chad, but most conflicts are little known by the broad DCS player-base and it would be hard to build an economically viable map around it. Same goes for other African wars of which many have been ongoing for decades with death-tolls exceeding other conflicts since WW2. I'd love to see a sub-saharan Africa map one day.2 points
