13 December 2024 Dear Fighter Pilots, Partners and Friends, This week we released the highly anticipated Iraq map into early access. This is a great addition to DCS and represents one of the most important combat theaters of the late-20th and early 21st centuries. The Iraq map captures the rich history, diverse geography, and pivotal battlefields of the region. The focus of this initial, Northern region, is provided to support missions and campaigns mainly pertaining to the Global War on Terror and ISIS. Later, the Southern region will be added to support Operation Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom. Watch the Iraq launch trailer! In parallel to Iraq map development, our separate Afghanistan map team has been working hard on updating and improving Afghanistan Southwest and adding the new Eastern region. Based on your feedback and lessons learned from the Southwest region, we have enhanced and polished ground textures, improved vector data on and around airfields, re-detailed taxiways and logistics scenes, and provided more advanced surface normal mapping. Additionally, many unique 3D models for Kabul and updated crash models for static and civilian vehicles are being implemented to increase immersion. Please check out the details below. The release of the Iraq map is part of an intermediate DCS Update created primarily for the new map. However, there are many additional stability and quality improvements across multiple modules. For DCS Core, VR controller issues and resource synchronisation bugs have been fixed. The CH-47F’s multi-crew engine shutdown issue has been resolved, and the Supercarrier no longer launches flares when players attempt unauthorized landings. The Mirage F1 has received numerous avionics, cockpit, lighting, radar, and payload enhancements to add and improve realism. The C-101 Aviojet benefited from upgraded bomb model textures. Please read the full changelog. Our massive DCS Winter Sale 2024 is now live until the 6th of January 2025. Don’t miss the perfect opportunity to expand your collection and make this holiday season one to remember! With up to 50% across all our most popular modules, we are confident you'll find something to warm you up this winter. Check the Winter Sale video. Thank you for your passion and support. Yours sincerely, Eagle Dynamics Iraq Out Now The early access launch of DCS: Iraq covers Central and Northern Iraq. This map uses our latest map technology with improved normal mapping, better vegetation, and many interesting Points of Interest (POI) to provide a highly-realistic and engaging feeling of flight. Work will continue in the early access period to include improved roads, the inclusion of H2, H3, Al-Kut and Mosul airfields, more POIs, and tuning of view distances and airfields. Further expansions will grant you access to the Iraq Southern region, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia. Just like other DCS maps, we offer the DCS: Iraq as a complete map that will be updated throughout the early access period. However, if you are only interested in a particular region or on a budget, you can decide to simply purchase the northern Iraq region in high-detail. The choice is yours. Modular Options DCS: North Iraq ($39.99): Perfect for those focused on the heart of Iraq’s northern conflicts like the Global War on Terror and ISIS. DCS: Iraq ($59.99 early access price with 20% off). This is the ultimate package, combining North and South Iraq plus a large neighbouring areas for a complete experience. DCS: South Iraq ($39.99): Immerse yourself in the oil fields, marshlands, and Gulf War theaters. This region is not currently available for purchase and will be coming in Q2 2025 or earlier. DCS Update Development Progress Despite this week’s update being intermediate in nature, provided primarily for the launch of DCS: Iraq map, we and our 3rd party partners were able to include some valuable additional items into the build: DCS - Core Several core engine fixes to improve stability and gameplay. The resource managers now synchronize dynamically changed warehouse resources for new clients. In VR, controllers no longer disappear after selecting the VR settings tab. DCS: CH-47F by Eagle Dynamics A critical fix addresses engine shutdown issues when a second crew member joins a hot-started helicopter, ensuring smoother multi-crew operations. Work continues on new autopilot functions. DCS: Supercarrier by Eagle Dynamics Player attempts to land without clearance no longer trigger unwanted flare launches from the carrier, removing an immersion-breaking behavior. We strongly recommend contacting ATC first and following landing instructions to avoid deck crew instruction issues. DCS Mirage F1 by Aerges Multiple avionics and systems improvements enhance realism and reliability. Navigation, formation, and landing lights are now more accurate, along with radar rendering fixes and improved radio behavior. The Belouga BLG66 bomb and other payload options have been standardized. Various cockpit animations, indicator flags, and instrument behaviors have been corrected, leading to a more authentic flight experience. DCS: C-101 Aviojet by AvioDev The visual quality of several bomb models, including BLG66 and BR-series bombs, has been improved for better overall realism. Campaigns Campaign improvements include added subtitles to radio communications, updated AI to the latest standards, corrected mission behaviors, and refined briefing instructions. These changes enhance narrative clarity, mission flow, and the overall player experience in several Huey and F-16C campaigns. For a detailed list of all the changes, please read the full changelog. East Afghanistan Development Update Report We are committed to delivering the Afghanistan East project into Early Access in the nearest future, and to ensuring that it meets the expected quality standards. Our primary focus is currently centered on creating essential airfields and ensuring they operate seamlessly. We are also carefully refining and enriching the areas surrounding these sites to minimize any need for later adjustments after the initial release. Beyond the airfields, we are enhancing existing models and introducing new, unique ones to more closely reflect the local real-world environment. This includes the addition of various infrastructure elements such as fuel stations, administrative buildings, and cultural or religious landmarks. Simultaneously, we are developing a detailed, non-destructive road network across Afghanistan. We are also significantly expanding the map’s overall data, incorporating an unprecedented number of settlements, agricultural areas, and industrial zones. This surpasses any previous DCS map in terms of scope and density. On the technical front, we are improving ground textures and employing new algorithms to create more detailed normal maps. These refinements will bring greater visual depth and realism to the terrain. As we prepare to release the second part of the Afghanistan map, the entire project will benefit from an expanded main map area, albeit at a lower fidelity, to support aircraft carrier operations, catering to you, our most dedicated enthusiasts. Optimization efforts are ongoing, and we appreciate your understanding during the Early Access phase. Many planned features for the Afghanistan theater remain in development and will be introduced in future updates during the polishing stage. Completing all planned elements of the Afghanistan project represents a significant undertaking, both in terms of workload and time. Winter Sale Holiday Savings! I mean no disrespect, but if we followed half of the advice here or on the internet regarding how to manage a business we would not be in business for much longer. We get that you all want products to be completed quickly, but it isn't possible, that is why we have the early access model, it allows us the time we need to bring these projects to you all. If early access isn't for you that is fine. We understand and it is completely optional. In many cases for some its best to wait for full release. There are lots of people here who are very vocal and often negative about DCS ( some repeatedly ), and while all of your voices are important the majority of people enjoy DCS, and they continue to support early access. We are constantly working on the core of DCS, we are constantly working on bugs, our teams work very hard and will continue to, you can see the work we do in our changelogs. We have been producing DCS for over 17 years now and it continues to grow and expand, to every body who has made that possible with your support and purchases we thank you.9 points

I understand that you are trying to talk up your video review on YT -- and I think that this forum is perhaps the wrong place to do so. In the interest of bettering everything DCS, please allow me some comments as to why I think that your writings come across as a bit low-effort: Because.... ? You say so? IMHO, that is pretty much what everyone expects from a surface mesh, and hardly new. What is the new, unparalleled tech that you speak of and how is that evidenced? Except what is not. Which is a lot. I recommend that you avoid empty expressions. What does that mean? More importantly: above doesn't say if that is good or bad. My godson has cooked some food in ways that I have never seen before. It was also exceedingly awful. So it's 3 years old. I think it a bit ironic that you should say that, considering that four words later you write and on, and on. Too many empty, IMHO meaningless, phrases, which makes me believe that the only reason that you posted here was to push your YT channel: I recommend that you realize that you also put your best foot forward in the description of your video. I am sure that your written contribution does not represent your full abilities, that you can do a lot better. I also think that you like the map, and I think that it is good that you post that opinion. For the record, I have purchased the map (for the full 70 USD on Steam), so you do not have to convince me.6 points

While I'm not as down as some on Afghanistan, I'd be lying if I told you I didn't tell myself "Damn... got the wrong one" when I got a glimpse of what Iraq looked like. That being said, I wasn't dissatisfied with Afghan before that release so it's more a case of a team doing an amazing job than it is about another team doing a bad one. Only thing frustrating for me about Afghan is the lack of meaningful communication. Feels like "We will tell you soon" doesn't accomplish anything useful.6 points

In fairness to us, the sum of all Newletter communication about this to date has been 2 paragraphs hinting at a "new approach to developing maps". One can only speculate as to what this is as that it the extent of what has been said. As for forum interaction, its been very tight lipped and reserved is perhaps the most charitable way I can put it. I dont think @saltyleon's expectations are unreasonable. Conversly, no one outside of ED knows how each map has been developed or over what time scale. So there is certainly a risk we run away with ourselves and assume thay have been developed almost in tandem to vastly differing standards and with little central oversight. Hence the consternation. A little transperency here and about what the plan actually is would perhaps go a long way. I look forward to the newsletter today and hope for something more that look down shots from 20000ft.5 points

At initial early access release: The following areas/features are "finished"/"work in progress"/"coming later". From finished areas you can get an idea how the final product will look like. This is our roadmap for the product (map) from early access to the final product (and quality) [roadmap - months/planned releases/whatever] This is our goal for the quality of the final product (map) [image/video +optional article] Something went wrong/didn't meet our/your expectations on the product. We assessed the situation and are planning going forward this way. If you want to know more, ... [article] Our product needs more time to meet our/your expectations. If you want to know more, this is what we're intend to to do solve the issue ... [article] That's what I wanna hear from every developer that uses the early access model to get early funding for product development. Because I need to trust the developer, that my investment in this unfinished product is worth the waiting time and the initial quality/state of the product can asure that the goals, the developer outlines, can be met.5 points

Correct, it's been discussed earlier in the thread. I updated the reload time with the latest fix update, to even better reflect the actual reloading time.4 points

Same. I won't buy anymore for a long time until I see ED improving...can only imagine it will take years for Afghanistan to be completed.4 points

This response is becoming increasingly prevalent throughout EDs comms. It’s a cop-out specifically designed to avoid being held accountable for failing to meet timelines or feature promises. Basically, as long as ED don’t say anything, they don’t have to deliver anything… (P.S. before the mods jump in, this post, and many others like it, are born out of continuing frustration with the ongoing poor comms and project management. It’s not intended as an attack on any ED individual, or the hard work they do.)4 points

Is there any chance of a refund to "return" the Afghan map if we don't like this style? It looks awful and I deeply regret wasting my money on a map I have barely used due to the terrible visuals.4 points

Hello, I purchased the Afghanistan map directly on release and as many others, I immediately noticed the "patchwork" character of the map. Large areas with very low detail and smaller "patches" with very high detailed textures are located directly next to each other without transition. These patchwork patterns can be found all over the place. Also there were/are lots of LOD issues where the terrain literally "moves" up and down when you come closer to an area, which feels strange, of course. Yesterday I saw first content from the new Iraq map and I was wondering that - besides that there are areas on the map, that lack content (buildings/vegetation) - I didn't notice any of the issues from Afghanistan (or far less). All parts of the map that I saw (finished or unfinished) share much more equal texture quality of ground textures with additional layers for terrain details and vegetation. The overall quality seems a lot better and - way more consistent across the map. This causes some questions: Why is the quality of the initial releases of these two maps (both developed by ED) so different? ED told us, that both maps are developed in parallel by two separate teams. Both maps are nearly of the same size. Both maps are located in the same region of the globe with similar terrain and they probably sharing a lot of assets. Why still can't ED tell their customers, 6 months after release, about WHEN Afghanistan will get its first update and WHAT we can expect in terms of improved quality for the southwest regionand what is EDs visual goal in terms of detail and quality for these new maps? I think we can expect that both teams have access to the same tools and techniques for map creation, right? Why did Afghanistan even get released in its state while these issues were clearly visible, not only compared to Iraq but also compared to maps from third-party developers, e.g. the Sinai map? As a purchaser of the Afghanistan map the lack of information from ED, the fact that maps like Kola already received several updates across the year and finally Iraq map beeing released and in a better state even before Afghanistan gets any fixes/updates (and most likely not before February 2025) doesn't feel good. Thanks for listening.3 points

No spring wobble and smoother use of the rudder. For heli flying, one can remove the spring and only use the damper, which means that you do have resistance, but no more return to center.3 points

Yeah, I'm kind of wishing I'd saved my $60 and waited for Iraq, but I'm considering that cash a donation to ED for the 1000s of hours of fun they've provided me over the past years after I've only purchased a minimal number of DLCs compared to many in the community. That said, anyone want to donate DCS: Iraq to me for Christmas? I'm sure Afghanistan will get the love soon...3 points

Whilst we are not forgetting things lets not forget that one of those modules has been in EA for 4 years and that the cat crews already had enough motion in them to avoid looking like zombies whilst standing twiddling their thumbs, something that should have been easy to incorporate into what are essentially, the same models with different frocks on. Lets not also forget it still takes at least 4 separate mods to dress the SC in anything approaching a realisitc manner for what is, essentially, the sake of 5 static objects and a decent looking AI Seahawk.3 points

As this behavior occurs not only with wheels down but at slow speed in general you even cant argue with that landings werent tested before the patch was released. The FLCS change is mentioned in the changelog and nobody of the testers even tried to go below 200 kts to see what happens with the FLCS update at slow speeds? Just wow.3 points

I misread your statement, hence I deleted my post in the meantime. But then again, I could just as well recite the rest of my post: The wind model is flawed and needs fixing. It's not just the hard-tied windshear between GND ant 1600ft and the linked seastate. It's also the ILS logic and it's tie to the required wind to activate it. Right now, in order to activate the ILS during fog, there needs to be a wind in place that would dissipate that very fog.3 points

We're not on a beta branch any longer. There is a reason ED employs a large team of closed beta testers. This is such an obvious issue it should have been caught during the test-cycle PRIOR to releasing said patch. That's what KungFu said.3 points

Hi @BIGNEWY, I am happy to hear, that there is a new newsletter today, that has an update included about the progress on the Afghanistan map. I also have to say that the depth of information, we received in the last months was rather thin. Yes, ED informed about missed expectations and your intention to fix the situation (which needs more time). ED posted new WIP screenshots but they looked unfinished as well - so again, we have no idea of your quality goals for the map. For other topics, ED lately released very detailed white papers. For Afghanistan really wasn't that much information besides: we're working on it and we tell you, when its done. Don't see my list as a threat towards ED. Early access is widely used. A few years ago, early access was still a new thing and people were more willing to invest, just because to get access early and for a better price. But over the years there also were tons of dissapointments in early access, therefore trust is becoming more and more important. And I would like to see ED building more trust into these long-term projects such maps and modules.3 points

Are there really no airfields planned in Iran? The Iran-Iraq war was "THE" conflict in this region in the 1980s. Without Iran airfields, it becomes pretty pointless to create such missions.3 points

Oh, for sure, one could manually make the adjustment. My issue is that it is often reported as some sort of bug or mistake. Where it does fall down however, is with EDs insistence to linking sea state with wind, which really is unrealistic, and results in people having to set a ridiculously high surface wind speed to get a pitching deck scenario, which then makes the coupled winds even more problematic. The solution to that is to have an independent swell setting, and have small waves (chop) a function of surface wind speed.2 points

I didn't do anything particularly heroic or eloquent. I did take the time to bug the MiG on the HSD while running in to drop, so I could find it easily with the HMD and have some visual reference where exactly to turn my nose. Then right after I dropped the JDAM, I switched immediately to missile override, flipped the CAT 1 switch, locked the MiG and fired, then dropped altitude and evaded by cranking hard left to gimbal limits, followed by hard right, again to gimbal limits. While dropping chaff. That seems to have defeated his missile. Fired off a second AIM-120, but the first one got him. Or maybe Scooter got him before the second AMRAAM could get to him? Kinda lost SA somewhat while trying to evade, so I could have very well missed whether or not she engaged as well. I did hear my character say "Splash Foxhound", so I assume, nay, claim that is was my kill. BTW, remember that if you use ECM in mode 3, your radar will stop working while you are transmitting.2 points

I understand that some people are disapointed that the new Iraq map sometimes looks flat and that the animation of the deck crew could be more natural. Please don‘t forget that both are early access and still havy much in development. The deck crew is a big step in the right direction and took many men hours of work and development. The future looks bright and cool stuff is comming ahead!2 points

Look, i'm not saying that the maneuver per se is unrealistic, it is possible to use this maneuver to defeat some missiles, like older SAMs, as it happened IRL with an F-16. However the results we are seeing in the game for the amraam certainly aren't realistic. Otherwise, why pilots would invest countless hours in learning BVR tactics, timelines and opt to stay as far away as possible from enemy aircraft? just do a barrel roll and defeat any missile. I remember another frustrating issue in DCS regarding missiles, not too long ago, the amraam would try to intercept enemy air to air missiles almost every time, even if you were targeting the aircraft launching them, not their missiles. Up to this day, if you are fighting an F14, the amraam will regularly stop tracking the tomcat and start tracking the Phoenix if the combat is in the 10-15nm range. Also, you could easily detect air to air missiles with the radar in the F/A-18 and deliberately target the enemy missiles, to the point that an enemy flanker could launch all of his 10 missiles and you could intercept them all and merge with it. Now, i don't doubt that radars can see air to air missiles in some situations, however, the way that it was implemented in DCS gave extremely unrealistic and arcadey-type results. So, just because some math is right, doesn't necessarily means that the final result of the simulation will be correct. The same thing is happening here, right now.2 points
